Quick-Fire Tips for New Larpers

Splash out on the more expensive fake blood that doesn't stain clothing.

Layering and scarves are your friend when kitting up on a budget.

There will be tons of people at games willing to lend you weapons a props. Just ask!

In general, 'Just Ask!' is a great tule to have.

Prioritise comfort and warmth/lack of warmth when designing kit.

If part of your character isn't fun, just change it. Don't suffer through for the sake of 'the character'.

Don't feel like you immediately have to throw yourself into combat. Taking it slow and doing some training before wading in will make you a better fighter than 50% of the people at a game.

Life is too short for boring meetings. If it sucks, hit the bricks.

Let yourself have the damn wish fulfilment.

Try your hardest not to be intimidated by people who have been larping longer than you. We're all nerds dressed up in a field.

Crewing can be a good way to try out lots of things and figure out what you like without having to pay a lot for it.

Make sure you read the safety document and complaints procedure for every game you go to.

Remember, above all else, this is a hobby we do for fun.

Amtgard is a class-based, fantasy-genre live action roleplay, played with boffer weapons and spell balls. It is based around large groups of players simulating battles and quests, and has a heavy emphasis on saftey.

Last October I played the character Valemon at the Victorian fae gathering LARP A Harvest Dance.

Valemon is a character from a Norwegian fairy tale: a king cursed to be a polar bear. They were an old, wise, protective, and empathetic creature, making sure no mortal would accidentally wander through the Veil into the Fae realm. On the other hand, they were secretive, sad, bitter, and stuck in their ways. It’s hard to teach an old bear new tricks.

During the Harvest Dance, Valemon did their best to protect their child Alvar. No one, not even Alvar, knew that they were Valemon’s human child, and Valemon did everything in their might to keep that a secret. Who knows what those other fae would say or do if they found out...?

I learnt everything about this character three days before the game. A player had dropped out last-minute and I got to fill in for them. The costume was almost completely provided by the organizers and they helped me to get familiar with the character.

This was one of the most intense LARPs I've ever played, and honestly, I've still not completely recovered from all the torment and grief this character went through. It was an absolute honor though, and polar bears are now a new favorite animal of mine.

Most of these are player characters from Weight of the World, the LARP I helped to run that finished earlier this year. This group ended up as an extended family group, centred roughly on Gulliver Darkwood (in the centre there). The family dynamic here led to a lot of interesting gameplay, and it was really neat to watch all these characters grow and change over the course of the game.

Unfortunately the original files are TOO BIG for tumblr, so these are smaller versions I saved from deviantart, so you should go there to see the full resolution versions. Ok so faith and steel game is in a couple of days so that mean Ghothi hype time!!

Except iv had another character concept for a completely different game that I wanna talk about instead.

Where I live there’s two large combat larp games. Faith and steel is one of them. Concord is the other. Concord is comprised of many factions or realms that form alliances with each other to defeat greater evils. (Faith and steel is more Roman’s vs Vikings, pvp) Aqua tofana was in the Germanic/ dark ages inspired realm and is a plague dr. RIP dr tofana but I had a better character idea. Andash is another realm that is moorish Spain / Moroccan inspired and a lot more people I know are in that realm so it makes me a bit more comfortable. All I want is a chill larp experience sometimes where I don’t have to fight or even roleplay too much. Faith and steel is my big roleplay and fighty game and too much roleplay and I need to take a nap.

Anyway the character idea is based on the fact that a dash has a lot of sun and moon iconography and I like that a lot. “Suns war and moons peace” is apart of the lore and a big inspiration for Jiba / Cyrus. Jiba is the main name and it means moon, so that is my peaceful persona that hopefully everyone will meet first. Cyrus means sun and that is their city name that they use for buissness and war discussions. Overall I want to play someone’s sweet little grandma who will spoil the shit out of everyone and when the chips are down switch to a ruthless leader. (Hopefully not often that’ll take a lot of spoons, I’d much rather keep it light and fluffy.)

Idk if or when I’ll play concord probably not for ages yet. And maybe I’ll play aqua tofana after this character dies or I get bored. But yeah have some meiker pics.

Well, I graduated high school in 2021, moved to a big city, and have since played my flute less than 10 times in that time. I've gotten a diploma of theatre arts, and have been working in a mix of theatre and hospitality since!

Offsite, I mostly post on my tiktok, itskatelive! It's more LARP stuff, but hey, I'm having fun ^^

Thanks for the fun during high school! I might do something with this blog in the future, maybe re-theme it or something, but for now, I'll leave it as is.
