Half the time that's how 90 percent of our conversations go with a couple of our friends. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to eat at every restaurant in most cities. Especially bigger metropolitan areas. Small towns, maybe, but let's not be cynical simpletons and think outside the 10x10 some hide in.

In MA alone there are 15.7k restaurants. In CA, 85.7k. In NY 49.5k. Time Out has an article about 118 restaurants in Lisbon.

Realistically, foodie culture sparks conversation and can unite people. These "other thinkers" need to seriously realize the world is bigger than their keyboard.

Arriving In Lisbon

Airport To Montijo

My alternate self left the Azores and arrived in Lisbon today! I have no idea how I got from the airport to my accommodations. I'm falling behind with the trip planning! I don't even know where the airport is!

I checked Google maps to see if I would have been able to take public transportation. It seems there is a fairly straightforward route that would have taken about an hour, with one connection and less than 5 minutes of walking at any point.

I found this website that says that the airport is located just 6km (4 miles) from the city's historic center and that it is well connected by public transit. Usually big city airports will have some sort of information or maps for the transit system and a means of purchasing the fare, so it shouldn't be a problem to navigate my way to my lodging. My flight arrives mid-day on a weekday, so I likely won't be fighting against rush-hour crowds.

Here is some very useful information from that website:

For most visitors, the metro provides the best option as it is inexpensive, safe and the stations cover the entire city. Metro services depart every 5-15 minutes and the airport is connected to the Red Line. A single ticket to anywhere in the city costs €1.50 and is charged to the re-useable Viva Viagem card, which costs €0.50 for the initial purchase.

Great! So I think I've sorted out how to get from the airport to my apartment rental in Montijo!

Next on the agenda: where the heck is Montijo?

Getting To Know Montijo

So Montijo is an area just across from the bay or river or whatever that body of water is next to Lisbon (I'm sure I will learn exactly what that body of water is as I learn more about Lisbon). I guess it started out as barely more than a fishing village but over time grew in population to a city proper. It looks like it is now basically a part of the larger Lisbon metropolitan area in terms of it's geographic location, though as far as city administration goes it seems to be a separate municipality.

From what I read on Wikipedia and a few other sites, Montijo is off the tourist track, and a nice and quiet residential area compared to downtown Lisbon. From the photos on various sites it looks like a really cute place! I think it will be a nice place to spend my long-stay over the next month.

I found this website called The Crazy Tourist that lists the 15 best things to do in Montijo. Most of the things listed wouldn't be worth a separate trip for a tourist only spending a few days in Lisbon. But for a slow-traveller staying in Montijo, these are great options for something to do between excursions farther afield.

One important piece of information I have learned is that there is a ferry service and a long-ass bridge connecting Montijo to Lisbon. I think the ferry service is something my alternate self is going to get to know very well.
