Reactions As I Read: ● GLADIATOR <3 ● is Matt finally back in New York for good? ● Artie Simek’s lettering is chef's 💋. never really noticed until I came across a lot of comics with not-great lettering ● DD heading to Netflix headquarters, apparently
Tumblr media
● if Candace needs a lawyer, why didn’t she call her brother, the D.A.? ● o_o is that the first time we really see Gladiator’s blades cut someone? ● ah, so that’s why Candace didn’t call Foggy ● a mention of both the Daily Bugle and ESU. could there be a Spidey crossover in the near future? ● finally a good DD story! ● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: Following the defeat of the Mandrill and the Black Spectre, Matt Murdock decides to remain in New York for the time being in order to get the District Attourney's office back in order while Foggy Nelson is still recovering and bids farewell to Natasha for the time being parting with a kiss. Out on patrol as Daredevil, Matt broods over his relationship with the Black Widow and the current state of things in his life, he returns home just to miss a phone call.
It is from Candace Nelson who is trying to get a hold of Matt Murdock to represent her now that two FBI agents have come to take her into protective custody. With no time to wait, they take the research papers she has collected and is being led out when suddenly her apartment is crashed by the Gladiator. He critically wounds the two FBI Agents, takes the research papers and escapes with Candace as his prisoner.
When news breaks out, Foggy and Matt are worried about Candace's well being, and Matt decides to investigate. Going to Empire State University, where Candace had told him her trouble began, he meets with School of Journalism teacher Charles Laing. Liang explains that Candace took an interest in the universities work with the military and stumbled upon experiments conducted by former ESU professor Ted Sallis regarding Formula SO-2 that would turn people into pollution breathing creatures so that the current rate of prophets for progress could continue unimpeded long after the pollution makes it too toxic for normal humans to live. The troubling fact about this research is that none of the research or it's findings ever went public and stranger still Sallis has since gone missing in the Florida Everglades.
Traveling out to Citrusville, Florida, Matt Murdock meets with radio DJ Richard Rory who tells Murdock everything he knows about the disappearance of Ted Sallis, the strange murders that happened at his old home, and the creature known as the Man-Thing. Being taken out to the Sallis property, both Richard and Matt are attacked by the Gladiator. When Richard is knocked out, Matt slips away to change into Daredevil.
During the fight, Daredevil has the advantage over his old foe, until Gladiator's missing swings cuts loose a tree branch that lands on Daredevil's head, knocking him out. Then out of the bushes comes the Gladiator's employer, a costumed villain known as the Death-Stalker. He orders the Gladiator to kill Daredevil, and as the Gladiator raises his arm to land the killing blow, the Man-Thing shambles out of the swamp to witness the scene.

Kull the Destroyer 11, 1973 "King Kull Must Die!"
Kull the Destroyer 11, 1973 “King Kull Must Die!”
Tumblr media
Certain names in the comic book industry invoke thoughts of titles. Any classic comic book reader will tell you this is true. A character like Kull will always make me think of Robert E. Howard. This man had a very short time on Earth, but the impact he left is still being felt today. But I digress…King Kull is a pre-Conan era (or Pre-cataclysmic Age) character that ruled the kingdom of Valusia.…

AQUAMAN #56 / SUB-MARINER #72 (FINAL ISSUES OF BOTH SERIES) APRIL 1971 / SEPTEMBER 1974 BY STEVE SKEATES, JIM APARO, DICK GIORDANO, DAN ADKINS, VINCE COLLETTA AND LINDA LESSMAN
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC FANDOM AND MARVEL FANDOM)
Don Powers, who fights crime in Detroit as a costumed super-hero called the Crusader, has been hampered at night by his poor eyesight, but has devised and sent into orbit a mirrored satellite which provides daylight to the city at night and makes it possible for him to fight crime during those hours. However, the added daylight has caused algae to grow at an incredible rate in the area, and the mossy growth is threatening to engulf the city. When Aquaman hears of the problem, he immediately goes to Detroit and learns of Powers's part in the plot. At first he is repelled by the Crusader's employees, but he later manages to destroy the satellite and thus halt the growth of algae. The Crusader is accidentally killed in a fall.

TWO YEARS LATER
A brooding Namor gets into a confrontation with a couple of surface dwellers. They attack Namor which leads to a fight. Then he's attacked by an alien creature and also retaliates against it. The defeated creature escapes and Namor is left to wonder what its purpose was.

CONTEXT
There was a time when comic-books would be cancelled overnight, no warning. And that seems to have happened to Steve Skeates with Aquaman, I am not sure if this was also the case with Namor, but I find it fitting that both endings are tied (Aquaman’s title would come back later that decade).
So the end of the first story is a bit odd. There was a green algae monster devouring Detroit and we are to believe that the coming night killed it. But that was it, that was the end of the menace (the satellite).
In the second story, we see Aquaman’s hand and thought balloon, but he is never identified. The satellite is the same as in Aquaman’s story, but we have a different green monster here.
This would become on of the many unofficial crossovers between the two companies.
REVIEW
Now, was it worth it? Well, yes and no. First of all, the second story doesn’t really solve the cliffhanger. And second, Namor’s story was never meant to be continuation, it just happened to serve as a conclusion way after the first comic was published. Namor’s story is a bit odd, with the creature seemingly fighting for no reason.
Aquaman’s story is also a bit weird, it has a very special first act that I wish had stayed for the remainder of the issue (seeing the adventure through a tv could fit Skeates experimental approach to the title). Also, the Crusader’s motivations are funny and good for this type of story. The monster is not the villain, one man’s ego is. In the second story, racism is the villain, and not the green monster, see a pattern there? We could assume that Skeates needed a conclusion for the monster as well and both monster are in theory the same.
I give the stories a score of 8
