Blue Gate Crossing (蓝色大门), dir Yee Chih-yen (易智言). 2003.
Taiwanese filmmaker Yee Chih-yen follows up his debut Lonely Hearts Club with the romantic drama Lanse Da Men (Blue Gate Crossing). Best friends Meng Ke-rou (Guey Lun-mei) and Lin Yueh-chen (Liang Shu-hui) are 17-year-old high school girls. When Yueh-chen admits she likes the boy swimming champ Chang Shih-hao (Chen Bo-lin), she talks Ke-rou into talking to him for her. But Shih-hao ends up liking Ke-rou instead, and the rest of the film develops their sweet friendship and adolescent romance. The only problem is that Ke-rou thinks she might be a lesbian because she's in love with her best friend Yueh-chen.
The film has been well-received critically. Dennis Lim, in a review for the Village Voice, observed the film's "meticulous framing and haunting use of repeated motifs" reflects the influence of Taiwanese New Wave directors Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang. The Portland Mercury described the film as "a modern-day Chinese lesbo twist on the old Cyrano story" that "treads new territory in the teen coming of age drama realm," praising Yee's "haiku-like directorial lyricism."
Gentle and reflective, Blue Gate Crossing ultimately doesn't make a terribly strong impact, but it does impress with its well-composed visual style and sensitive handling of bittersweet emotion.

Counselling and Wellness Services Kick Starts 2019-20 year with the Forget Something Event

By Serena Kehui / Collegian staff
The counselling and wellness services has organized many different events, programs, and campaign held at Upper Iowa University. No different than last year, this year's first event was still the Forget Something Event. This year's event was held on the Aug. 26, a Monday afternoon at the Student Center at 11:30 a.m.
The Forget Something Event is where the services give out free items to students who forget to bring or prepare some daily essentials for the new semester. Free items given out vary from everyday essentials such as toiletries, cups, hangers and paper towels to eating utensils such as plates, forks, spoon, cups. They also included items often neglected by students such as a first aid kit, hand sanitizer or dish soap.
Director Crystal Cole started this event in 2017. She started it because she realized students often moved in forgetting items, some do not have access to go to a store right away and some might have financial issues getting something. Cole had seen this done in other schools before, she and Llani Main both set a budget, had a list of items and they went shopping.
Cole decided to continue this event every year because she finds it beneficial. “You can definitely tell when students find something, and they were like ‘Oh, I need those’ or ‘I have not had that,’ and sometimes students can have a little of extra something. When you are in college, free stuff always helps.” Cole said.
She wanted to get something little for the students and fill in the gap for them, so they do not have to worry about it. During the event, each student was allowed to pick one thing off the table if they need them, and staff were there till all the items on the table are gone.
Due to lunch hours and the immense number of students in the Student Center, it only took half an hour, and almost 60 percent of the items were gone. The students put an end to the event around 12:20 p.m. by taking all the free stuff on the table.
Llani Main, a graduate assistant, who has been working for counselling and wellness services said “Every year, the department spends around $100 to buy stuff for students. By having this program, it helps us to put our faces out there, let students like us, and to jumpstart the year.”
A returning student, Daniel Kah Ming Lem said, “Every year at the beginning of the semester, I am always waiting for this event. I mean, who does not like free items and I could always use an extra of something.”
Yi Mun Choo, a freshman was seen enjoyed the event said, “I like this event, I ran out of hangers, and they gave me free hangers. Now I have extra hangers to use.”

Beruang Biru BB626

Numan Afifi ‘letak jawatan’, bila nak bubar jawatankuasa transgender Pulau Pinang?
Numan Afifi ‘letak jawatan’, bila nak bubar jawatankuasa transgender Pulau Pinang?
Memetik laporan FMT tersebut, NA menyebut “I think for the cause I’m doing, I don’t want it to be affected by politics. So I think it’s best for the activism I’m doing to not be influenced by politics” kepada Malay Mail Online (MMO).
Kempen ini sebenarnya selari dengan saranan Sisters in Islam (SIS) dalam kenyataan media pertubuhan feminis liberal tersebut bertarikh 28 November 2016 bertajuk “RUU355 is a matter of concern for all Malaysians”, dalam mempertikai cadangan pindangan Akta Mahkamah Syariah (Bidang Kuasa Jenayah) 1965 atau dikenali sebagai RUU355, bahawa “Muslim trans-women have been constantly targeted by religious authorities and inhumanely treated by being placed in male prison, where they are then subject to sexual violence”.
Di dalam artikel bertarikh 6 Disember 2016 dengan tajuk “RUU355: SIS and the attempt to obfuscate Islamic criminal law”, saya menulis bahawa “SIS also brings up allegations of transwomen being subjected to discrimination and sexual violence when put together with other male prisoners. This is a nonsensical criticism as it only implies that such transwomen must be placed together with female prisoners in order to accommodate their needs as such women regard themselves as being born male. But this is not permitted by Islamic teaching”.
Jadi, mana mungkin ia hanyalah satu “usaha individu”.
