SUBLIME CINEMA #646 - LILYA 4-EVER

Bleak and overwhelming, this is a movie that has haunted me since I first saw it. Lukas Moodysson’s best film is also one of the best Swedish films of all time, up there with Bergman and Andersson’s. This is as uncompromising a film there is, shot in whatever hellhole location in Estonia they dug up to stand in for Soviet Russia - and the feeling of humanity’s grime and decay lingers all these years later.

Dos ángeles llevan en su pecho el dolor del mundo. Sangran perdón y purifican el aire que respiran. Él sueña con ser tan fuerte como mil hombres, sueña con protegerla del mundo que se alza tenebroso sobre ellos, desea salvarle la vida como ella lo hizo alguna vez con él. Ella vive por la pureza de él, su alma no se contamina con las bestias del mundo porque él la purifica con sus sueños.  Ambos son muy frágiles y en esa fragilidad reside su belleza, pero lentamente son asfixiados por el hedor mundano del ambiente en que se encuentran. La muerte es la que termina por unirlos de una manera que la vida nunca fue capaz de hacer. La muerte es la madre bondadosa que nunca tuvieron en vida.
