Official Disney Store merch plagiarizes almost twenty-year-old fan art [UPDATE: Now removed]

Update (December 17, 2024): Disney Store has now removed the canvas from sale, and the artist has deleted her Facebook and Instagram posts displaying her art-copying canvas.

Original post: I recently found an art canvas being sold on Disney Store that plagiarizes a nearly two-decade old piece of fan art by artist Ribera, who was the best-known Lilo & Stitch fan artist back in the franchise's heyday.

The canvas piece is titled The Art of Being Friends and was made by Denyse Klette. It shows the human-alien duo in an art museum looking at a painting of themselves on a beach. The artwork is being sold on Disney Store as of this writing.

However, the artwork in the painting within the painting is a modified copy of Friends Forever by Ribera, which was originally published on February 25, 2005.

The similarities are uncanny; the poses are the same and the relative art style is very similar with only some slight modifications. Various details in the background and foreground have been added, changed, or removed to try to hide the fact that the canvas piece isn't original.

It's disappointing to see an artist copying someone else's fan art, and a rather old one at that, and managing to fool Disney into selling this.

So, I reblogged this serendipitous gift of a crackship a while ago and promised myself to make a moodboard or a collage out of it, but I totally forgot. I recently rediscovered this when I was going through the “Anna” tag on my blog and decided to actually go retweet this hilarious post on my Twitter.

When I retweeted the post, I saw that someone actually drew fan art of it in the comments and called it their OTP. And in that moment, I knew that I was prepared to ship them harder than ever before. lol

Tinker Bell x Stitch

So, I found this random Tumblr post of someone sharing their Phantom Manor pins, and I found something particularly interesting about them. The pins have cast Tinker Bell as Melanie Ravenswood, the bride of Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris, and Stitch as Jake the Foreman, Melanie's ill-fated fiancé. And yes, the pins also have Stitch cast as the Phantom, aka Henry Ravenswood Melanie's cruel father (but we're going to ignore that part).

The thing that got me hooked was the pin where Tinker Bell and Stitch are sitting together, arms linked, on a picnic date. I know, call me “weird” or whatever you'd like, but I thought it was really cute and wholesome for some reason, despite knowing what actually happens to Melanie and Jake on that picnic date.

I would like to end this by saying that Stitch seems to have a thing for Disney ladies, so could you blame me? Don't believe me? Check out this video in the link above, clearly showing Stitch wolf-whistling at Belle and flirting with Jasmine.

Recently had the enormous privilege of meeting the legendary Rob Paulsen (voice of Experiment 625/Reuben in Lilo and Stitch). Not only was he absolutely lovely to meet, but he also loved my fanart of Reuben I drew!!! Naturally I had to get him to sign it. This man contributed so much to my childhood and since Reuben is one of my comfort characters, I just had to meet him!! 😊😊😊

Presenting Experiment 011: Inkstain!

A very mischievous, fun-loving experiment. Being a 0-series experiment, she is part of Jumba's test batch and is mostly a mild nuisance. She was originally designed to soil freshly cleaned things with her ink, like laundry, and is often attracted to blank objects like canvases or walls. Inkstain is known to be playful and not very combative when confronted. She is also highly curious and naive, often following objects of interest or mimicking others. Inkstain is also known to be attracted to food, particularly that of seafood. When needed, she can tuck in her antennae and curl up her tail to vaguely pass herself off as a rabbit.

Strengths/Abilities:

Ink production - Inkstain's most notable trait is the ability to produce an ink-like substance using certain organs in her body. This substance is not easily washable by water. She can spit globs of ink to hit things at a distance, and secrete ink from her pawpads to further cause messes. Inkstain is able to control whether her pawpads secrete ink or not, but is unable to fire inky projectiles from them like she can with her mouth. She also has a cannon-like tail capable of shooting ink at its end, and may use it as a rudimentary firearm by holding it in her hands for better aim.

Wall-crawling - Using her ink-secreting pawpads, she can create a stickier type of ink that allows her to stick to walls and ceilings. This enables her to climb on almost any surface. She will leave a trail as she does this, and cannot climb as well without ink.

Prehensile tail - Her long tail is prehensile, allowing Inkstain to use her tail like a fifth appendage. When needed, she can curl it up to resemble a rabbit's tail.

Vacuum adaptation - Inkstain can survive in the vacuum of space as an inherent ability of being a genetic alien.

Quadrupedalism - She can walk and run on all fours for faster locomotion. This can also be used to make her rabbit disguise more convincing.

Weaknesses:

Water - Inkstain is aquaphobic and unable to swim. In bodies of water, she enters a panic-induced catatonic state and floats helplessly on her back. Her ink can also be dissolved by soaking stained items in water for a while. She also hates getting wet or being bathed. Inkstain is capable of drinking water, but will not enjoy it.

Lemon juice - Lemon juice, or substances derived from it, is capable of quickly dissolving Inkstain's ink and can even burn at her skin. She also cannot drink beverages like lemonade for a similar reason.

Limited ink supply - Inkstain has a limit on how much ink she can use at a given time. If dehydrated, exhausted, or hungry, she cannot produce more ink.

Lack of fighting ability - Inkstain does not have skills primarily designed for combat, and is mostly helpless in a fight. While she can create some level of distraction with her ink and has unskilled fighting moves like biting or punching, she does not possess abilities like super strength, retractable claws, or durability like the later-series experiments. She often opts to flee in battles.

Okay it’s not like I was rewatching Lilo & Stitch for the seventeen-hundredth time or anything

But I think people forget how dangerous and scary and what an outright powerhouse Stitch is when he’s in his normal state. 

Like. At the beginning, Jumba says, “‘He is bulletproof, fireproof, and can think faster than a supercomputer.”

But then during the movie we see him do things like dance and spaz out when the flash bulbs on cameras are in his face, or sink in water. And we just kind of forget that he’s supposed to be dangerous. 

But Stitch escaped the entire galactic armada by smashing the console of his stolen police cruiser spaceship and hyper-drive jumping across galaxies to crash land on one of the smallest land masses on an isolated planet…while the guidance system was disabled. Do you know what that means? It means he did those calculations in his head. While being hounded and shot at by an entire army of enemies. And he managed to disable the mothership in the same move to prevent immediate pursuit. 

Someone had to write that into the movie. Someone had to decide that specific method of escape. That was not an accident.  this is just your friendly reminder that for most of the film, Stitch is holding back. He’s pretending to be a harmless Earth creature to avoid capture while he plots a way off of the tiny island. If not for Lilo reforming him, he’d be an unstoppable monster. I mean, he only gets near his one weakness, water, because he’s so interested in being part of her earth family.

Think about it. We see him:

- plummet several thousand feet and bounce off of three mountains.  - hit the windshield of a moving spaceship.

- take the full blast of two fiery space engines, point-blank.

-catch a plasma core in his hands.

-get shot by a plasma cannon.  - carry several hundred tons of weight between semi trucks and 20-foot-tall space aliens.

- form a bomb out of nothing but a doll and a  roller skate.

I mean, early in the movie, they need to knock him unconscious, and the filmmakers don’t just hit him with one truck. That would be something you might expect from kids movies today. Just bonk the character with any old hard object and everyone will forget that he’s supposed to be bulletproof and all that jazz and just accept it. But no. Lilo & Stitch’s filmmakers say, “‘Oh, he’ll get knocked out—but it’s gonna take multiple semi trucks to do it.” 

And the fact that he can do all of this and survive all of this makes his bond with Lilo and decision to be good that much more poignant. Because everything else he was designed for works with crazy efficiency. He’s indestructible, check. He’s powerful, check. He’s destructive, he’s mean, he’s cruel—check. So when he dances and plays and surfs in the only element that poses a threat to him and calls a little human crew his family, that’s a big deal. 

Because he could just be straight up wrecking everything like the world is his Jenga tower and not even the G-Force they use to halt Godzilla could’ve stopped him.
