Liking Alola in 2024 is great until it dawns on you that Kukui would say "hawk tuah" and not know the meaning of it and wanting to fit in, but Lillie does and can't say anything about it because she knows it would be really awkward and only knows it because Moon and Guzma won't stop repeating it

Noblesse Oblige -- A Lillie Fic
Tumblr media
[Read on Ao3!]
Rated: G Relationships: Lillie & Selene Pokemon Sun and Moon/USUM Content Warnings: N/A Words: 2.5k
Summary: Lillie and Selene venture out into Lush Jungle chasing after a rumor they've heard from Hau. Some things can be found lurking in the leaves, but others will have to be found within yourself.
Written for the FairySteelZine!
---
Lush Jungle certainly lived up to its name. Every tree and fern seemed to curl in amongst each other, thick leaves and twisted vines melding together in patchwork harmony.
It would be unfair to call it overgrown, Lillie thought. Lush Jungle was grown exactly as much as it was supposed to be. It was wild, unrestrained, free to grow as it pleased; the roots disregarding human-made paths.
In an odd way, Lillie envied it.
She and Selene made their way through Lush Jungle at a steady pace. The midmorning sun dappled through the gaps in the leaves, odd shadows trickling across their uneven path. The light breeze danced along, toying with Lillie’s hair, the island challenge amulet on Selene’s bag. Fairy Pokémon fluttered about, rustling the leaves in the distance.
Still, as magical as the jungle seemed, Lillie doubted the “super-cool fairy-princess Pokémon hiding in the jungle” that Hau claimed to have seen was actually real.
Selene however, had no such reservations and thus, Lillie found herself knee-deep in jungle flora.
Not that she really minded.
“Ah.” Selene said, coming to a sudden stop.
Lillie stumbled slightly, bumping into Selene’s back.
“Wha—? What is it?”
“There.” Selene said, pointing off into the distance.
Lillie peered over Selene’s shoulder, gaze following her fingers. Very faintly, through the weave of trees and plants, was a bright glint. Something silver. Something metallic.
“Let’s go.”
Selene grabbed Lillie’s hand, pulling her forward through the brush.
They stumbled to a stop at the edges of wreckage, a clean circle that flared out into the jungle. Lillie touched the tip of her toe to the ground; there was still smoke curling off the now-dry grass. The trees and bushes in the immediate area had all been knocked over, splintered apart, or burnt. The smell of gasoline and embers mixed with the scent of earth and grass burned Lillie’s nose. Bright light shone down in a ring, a break in the trees allowing the sun to pour down across the wreckage. Lingering at the edges, Morelull and Comfey poked their heads out from where they hid in the leaves.
And there, in the centre of it all, was a large, strange creature.
A Pokémon… probably.
It was all metal, but its silver body had a green sheen, somehow a shade alien to all the greenery around it. Its body was clearly mechanical, yet something about it resembled a human. Sheets of metal suggested cascading hair, a layered dress. Its needle-like neck unnerved Lillie, seeming so fragile in comparison to the sturdy bamboo stalks on either side of it. One lay against its side on the right, propped up by the rest of the body. The other; the left, lay flat against the jungle floor, obscuring the base of where the creature sat.
A Pokémon: metallic and alien, and yet somehow beautiful.
Selene sucked in a breath. “Rotom. Who’s that Pokémon?”
At the sound of its name, Rotom Dex zipped out of Selene’s shoulder bag, hovering in place in front of her.
“Bzzt. Scanning.”
The display circled for a moment before loading to a page as Rotom read aloud.
“Celesteela, Bzzt. The Rocket Pokémon. Witnesses have seen it burn down a forest by expelling gas from its two arms. An Ultra Beast.”
“Celesteela…” Selene whispered, tucking the words in under her breath. “Thanks, Rotom. Back to sleep.”
“Bzzt. Zzz.” And Rotom zipped itself back up into Selene’s bag.
Lillie turned to Selene, asking for elaboration wordlessly.
“UB: Blaster. Ultra beast. Dangerous. Wicke told me.”
Even without touching, Lillie could feel Selene bristle beside her. There was an undercurrent layer of electricity that ran through Selene’s veins when she was preparing to fight, that energy now crackling to the surface. Without Selene even prompting it, Primarina flickered out from its ball. Its flippers brushed against the dirt, the Pokémon looking towards its trainer for the signal.
Perfectly in sync, as always.
“Ah—no!” Lillie squeaked out, pulling back on Selene’s hand.
This time Selene startled, whipping her attention over to Lillie. Primarina did the same. “What?”
Heat rose to Lillie’s face, but she tried not to care. “That… that Pokémon! You can’t fight it!”
“Why?” Selene asked. She wasn't angry, Lillie knew. She was always unflinchingly sincere. “I know you don’t like battles but—”
“Not that!” Lillie interrupted, embarrassed blush growing. “I—I’m sorry, but! It doesn’t want to fight!”
Selene stared Lillie down. She wore the same neutral expression as always, asking without words for Lillie to explain herself.
“I—It—it looks hurt! See, right there!”
Lillie pointed out at it, towards the left stalk. When Selene squinted she could see a jagged tear that slashed deep into the creature. Instead of any wiring or casing peeking out from the inside, all that spilled out was darkness.
“Ah…” Selene hummed. She held back; Primarina did the same.
She was still tense though, Lillie still felt that static in the air.
“It doesn’t look like it wants to fight…” Lillie repeated, voice cautious.
It wasn’t that she thought Selene wouldn’t listen. It wasn’t that she thought Selene would argue, or even disagree.
But…
Selene was the strong one. Selene led the charge, iron will and nerves of steel. If something needed to be done, Selene was doing it. It was always Selene. Never Lillie.
Selene looked Lillie up and down, then nodded towards the Ultra Beast. “Alright then. What do you want to do?”
Lillie didn’t move for a moment, only blinking in place. “What?”
“Your move,” Selene replied, waving her arm out. “Directions?”
Lillie felt the weight of expectations pass onto her shoulders like a brick. But at least it was a solid weight, it was a weight Lillie wanted to try and carry. She wanted to prove she could handle it.
“A-alright!” Lillie called, plunging her arm into her bag.
Her fingers curled around the Heal Ball at the bag’s bottom. It was smooth, the feeling of grasping it still unusual to Lillie. She could feel Nebby’s breathing, its soft body brushing up against her wrist. Nebby was sleeping now, and Lillie was grateful. Taking a breath, Lillie tossed the ball up with a gentle flick of her wrist.
 “Clefairy, come out! Please!”
In a flash of light, Clefairy materialized, standing vivid pink against the forest floor.
The nearby fairy Pokémon skittered a bit, turning their attention to Clefairy while keeping their distance from the girls as a whole.
Lillie crouched down to meet Clefairy at eye level. “Clefairy, go and use Life Dew on Miss Celesteela, please.”
Clefairy looked towards the beast, then back to its trainer.
After a moment of hesitation, it nodded, and began walking closer.
Selene bristled.
“Selene?”
“Nervous.” She replied. “Steel. Not good with Fairies. Don’t want Clefairy to get hurt.”
Lillie felt her stomach turn for a moment, the heat of the jungle only making her that bit more nauseous.
Still. Clefairy could do this. Lillie knew she could.
And she believed in Celesteela, too.
As Clefairy approached, it raised its arms up, a soft blue glow materializing in the air above it. Energy clouded together, forming a crystalline water droplet. It seemed to flicker forward, settling above Celesteela’s head before splashing over her.
Lillie held her breath.
What if the move wasn’t strong enough? What if Celesteela ended up hurting Clefairy? It would be all Lillie’s fault for trying to help and-
“Look.” Selene’s voice, strong and sturdy, sliced evenly through Lillie’s anxiety.
A Comfey flitted out from its perch in a tree. With a colourful array of petals, Comfey used Floral Healing. The pink and green flowers glowed with energy before making contact, light seeping into the wound.
With a little squeak, a particularly small Morelull crawled out from under a log. It latched onto the side of the metal stalk, slowly crawling its way up towards the wound. Once it got there, the Pokémon glowed brightly. A shining beam of pink light scattered down from the bright sunshine as Morelull used Moonlight.
Each move mixed into a vibrant illumination, pouring into the dark gash in Celesteela.
Glowing, the area around the injury appeared to grow, metal plates converging together, until all that was left was smooth steel.
Lillie breathed a sigh of relief. The fairy Pokémon chittered among themselves, evidently just as relieved.
“There…” Lillie’s voice came quiet, gentle smile stretching across her face. “Does that feel better?”
A pause. After a moment, Celesteela’s head bowed down, then back again. It was nodding, Lillie realized.
“Ah—wonderful!” she said.
Lillie had only taken one step forward towards her Clefairy and Celesteela, still several meters away from being able to even touch the Ultra Beast.
But the second she got closer, a metallic scraping sound emitted from Celesteela’s mouth and Lillie jolted back. Selene bristled again, taking a step of her own closer to Lillie. Her fingers twitched at her side, prepared to send Primarina forward at a moment's notice.
“Wait a moment!”
Lillie whipped her head around, braids bouncing across her back with the motion. “Selene, please, I—”
She turned her head back towards Celesteela, craning her neck up to meet its gaze. Or tried to, its expression baring permanently closed eyes.
Its mouth however, or at least what Lillie assumed to be a mouth, turned downward in a frown.
It was subtle, Lillie realized, its expressions mild and unassuming.
“Celesteela…” Lillie tried, raising her hands above her head, “I’m not going to hurt you, I promise! Is something else wrong? I can help you—I just need to get a bit closer to see…”
Even as she tried to convince Celesteela, Lillie could hear her own voice trembling.
No wonder Celesteela wasn’t listening to her, she was hardly even a trainer. Maybe she’d directed Clefairy wrong and the injury hadn’t healed right? Maybe Celesteela didn’t like her because of how close she’d been to Clefairy, the fairy’s aura clinging to her? Maybe Celesteela could just sense that she wasn’t a strong enough trainer to help.
Lillie gritted her teeth. Even if she was weak, she wanted to help Celesteela.
“Clefairy, please try and get closer to Celesteela’s fallen stalk if you can. But be gentle!”
“‘Lefairy!”
Clefairy gave a quick nod, then slowly walked towards Celesteela.
Lillie held her breath, prepared to cover her ears in case Celesteela began screeching again.
Instead, the sound never came, and Clefairy proceeded behind the fallen stalk.
Then after a moment, buzzing softly, a tiny Cutiefly rose out from the folds in Celesteela’s dress. It floated around for a moment, disoriented. Its tiny wings beat particularly hard, still dipping slightly despite its efforts.
The Comfey squeaked, spinning around in a loop before darting over to Cutiefly. It wound its flowers around the tiny fairy bug, lifting it up and escorting it over to where the Morelull sat on Celesteela.
Morelull trilled, glowing a vibrant pink and using Moonlight once again, this time on Cutiefly.
The Cutiefly buzzed loudly. It darted over towards Comfey, then back to Morelull, much faster than before.
All three Pokémon erupted into ecstatic chitters, Comfey twirling about so fast it became a blur.
Cutiefly flew up, hovering close to Celesteela’s face. Gentle, it pressed against Celesteela’s cheek. Comfey followed slowly behind, soaring up to the spikes protruding from the side of Celesteeela’s head. With one final twirl, it bestowed its wreath of flowers, dropping the ring on one of the spikes. Morelull settled for gently headbutting the side of Celesteela’s stalk.
“They’re thanking it…” Selene mused quietly.
Understanding washed over Lillie in waves as she watched the scene unfold.
“Oh, Celesteela… you were protecting that little Cutiefly?”
Again, Celesteela hesitated for a moment… and then nodded ever so slightly. The flowers on its head swayed back and forth with the motion.
Lillie approached again, and this time Celesteela didn’t stop her.
“Even when you were already hurt… you wanted to protect it, didn’t you?”
Lillie felt her heart clench for a moment. There was something about it that just pulled at her.
“For a Steel Pokémon… It gets along so well with fairies. Not Steel-like at all…” Selene mused.
Lillie couldn’t help but envy and admire Celesteela at the same time. A strong princess of steel, someone able to protect others.
“Celesteela,” Lillie whispered, “You’re…”
“Just like you.” Selene filled in, stepping forward to place a hand on Lillie’s shoulder.
“Huh? Selene, I—”
“It’s tough. And protects little Pokémon. Even when it’s hurting…”
Lillie looked to her feet, heat rushing over her face. “But I’m not—”
“Just like you,” Selene repeated. “You and Nebby. Graceful and tough.”
Lillie looked up, meeting Selene’s smiling face. “I—really? But—”
“No buts!” Selene shoved her palm over Lillie’s mouth. “Take the compliment!”
And finally, Lillie laughed, the sound spilling out from behind Selene’s hand. “Thank you, Selene.”
Selene just grinned, removing her hand to sling her arm around Lillie’s shoulder. “Anytime.”
Clefairy walked back over to its trainer, content with its work.
“Good job, Clefairy. You did great.” Lillie murmured, bending over to give Clefairy a gentle pat on the head. “Return for now.”
Selene looked up towards the sunlight beaming in from the hole in the forest canopy. The vibrant light had begun to tint orange; sunset was soon approaching.
“We should go. It’ll be night soon.”
Lillie nodded, though couldn’t help but feel the slightest twinge of disappointment.
“Yeah… you’re right…” Stepping back, she gave one last look towards Celesteela. “I-it was nice to meet you, Celesteela! Take care of yourself!”
“Hope we meet again.” Selene added, and recalled Primarina to its ball.
With that and a deep breath, the girls turned and began to walk away.
Celesteela hummed again, a lighter noise this time. Lillie turned, attention caught.
“Celesteela?”
Comfey flitted down to Lillie. With its tiny hands it grabbed one of her braids and tugged her backwards.
“Wh—whoa! Wha— hey!”
Lillie stumbled back, until she was just close enough to touch Celesteela.
“Celesteela?”
Celesteela looked down at Lillie, a wide smile on its face.
Selene and Hau had talked about connecting with their Pokémon before, knowing what they were trying to say without words. And for once… Lillie thought she understood it, too.
“Celesteela…” Lillie began hesitantly, tightening her grip on her duffle bag. “Would… would you like to come with me?”
Celesteela nodded.
“Ah! I want you to come too! Then—”
“Here.” Selene pressed a Poké Ball into Lillie’s hand. Actually, when Lillie looked closer, a Moon Ball. “This fits best.”
Lillie smiled. “Thank you…”
Gently, Lillie pressed the Moon Ball against Celesteela. In a shocking light, Celesteela dissipated, leaving Cutiefly and Comfey to swoop down and catch Morelull before it fell to the forest floor.
The ball in Lillie’s palm shook.
Once.
Twice.
And a third time, letting off a set of star-shaped sparks.
“I—I got a Celesteela!” Lillie cheered, hugging the ball close.
Selene leaned over, hugging Lillie. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you!”
Selene pulled away, leaving one arm around Lillie’s back. “Now. Go brag to Hau.”
Lillie pulled back, laughing. “Selene!”
“No. We gotta. Come on.”
Pulling her forward, Selene and Lillie ran off through Lush Jungle, laughing all the way.
[Ending!]

Alolan Dusk 6
Gladion:
Looks like some kind of hidden recording device, but it's not like one I've ever seen.
Lillie:
He probably made it himself. When Ilima first contacted us about this rescue mission, I even teased him how surprised I was to learn he became a field agent since he was always much better with his machines. [Soberly] It looks like now I was right...
Gladion:
Depends on who or what got to him. If it's our mystery monster, even the professionals were out of their league with that. [Soft hum as it isn't a very complicated device, but he's still surprised how easy it is to open.] There's only one file that says it stopped after fourteen hours of recording. I assume he left it running before it maxed out.
Lillie:
[Nervous as she’s not sure she wants to see, but part of her just has to know what’s on it] Can we play it?
Gladion:
[Leans back] Pull the chair around, this could take a while.
[There's a fuss of static as she drags the guest chair from the other side of the desk. There’s something obscure in the light before it suddenly cuts out. As she settles in, they both huddle closer to the dark screen to see if they can make out anything.]
"Won't be ...he finds the ...here...?"
Gladion:
[Shakes head and goes to mess with the sound mix.]
"Joke's on him. We've got a full battalion..."
Lillie:
[Sits back and turns it back down a bit] Okay, he came in very clear that time. That must have been when Ilima put it in his pocket.
"Put your fangs away and think for a moment. That thing just took out my house, what do you think it'd do to a Snubbull?"
[They both freeze as the other voice also comes out much clearer than before and Lillie pales at the familiarity of it.]
"We can't just sit here and wait for that, that… OUTSIDER to come down here-"
[As the ensuing argument and plan between the two plays out, there's no denying the voices. Kukui took off for the stairs and the sound goes quiet, except for the increasing hush of the pouring rain as they can assume Ilima stepped outside. For a brief moment the video clears to show a ground level glimpse at the battle about to begin on the beach. Gladion goes back to pause it, and while the rain, distance, and the gray hue of the night vision makes it impossible to distinguish the figures, Lillie clutches a hand to the ribbon on her blouse.]
Lillie:
Professor…
Gladion:
[Nods] And that's our monster, but is it Necrozma? You're the only one left who's seen it.
Lillie:
[The snapshot is too grainy to tell for sure, but as she leans in to see what she can make out, her eyes widen as the memory strikes her.] I think it is! See that? [Her finger circles a point at the creature's side and he tries to enlarge it.] That's its paw. I distinctly remember these massive claws that didn't seem to fit with the rest of it. And when it took over Nebby, it still had those strange arms hanging off of it. [Curls her fingers as she retakes her seat] Oh… I don't know if I can watch…
Gladion:
I don't think we have to since it went dark again.
[He fixes the screen and, sure enough, the video is dark for what feels like an eternity. All they can hear was the rush. The storm, the heavy breathing from running, a cry from a Tauros… Gladion starts to skip the tape ahead by thirty-second intervals to see if there was anymore to hear. The ocean, the motor…
The rain eases up as they can only assume from Ilima entering the shelter of the cabin. The light flicks on to a colorless video set to night vision mode and the camera spins to right itself. The fledgling detective breathes a sigh of relief at the screen as he brushes his wet bangs out of his face and tries to steady himself.]
Ilima:
I… I'm still not sure exactly what just happened back there, but I need to say… something. This is either going to make total sense when I watch this later or sound absolutely ludicrous. If anyone besides me should be watching this, I need you to make sure this message gets to the head of Aether Paradise. ...If it's not too late.
[He looks out the window with some uneasiness and moves the camera to a place it can sit still while he drives.]
Ilima:
You may call me Dauphine, I am a special agent with the E.I.A., on assignment to aid in the evacuation of Alola to escape the threat of an otherworldly predator. The same which I think just took out Professor Kukui. [Deep breath, keep going] He and I were at his lab to discuss plans for the evacuation. Somehow, it appears word has gotten to our predator, [ahem] what we believe to be a monster known as UB Black, and the news of our abandonment has greatly enraged it. Hard to say if it's distressed or being possessive, but I have no doubt in my mind now that THAT is what we are dealing with. This UB has proven to be far more intelligent than previously thought as it isn't attacking out of blind animosity. It can speak, it can plan, and I've got reason to believe now that the targets so far have all been to maintain its greatest secret. To keep any information that would help us to track it from getting out. Our studies have shown that UB Black can take control of other beings in the form of masks, and it is able to morph its own body into a sort of armor for the possessed. However, we've had accounts of it being able to fully absorb and manipulate its victim, though that may be circumstantial to the nature of the Pokemon. What I fear… is can it let itself be absorbed? [He shakes his head, his face graven as he seems held by some train of thought he can't convey.] Let me rephrase that. There was something definitely human about our attacker, and now I've got a hunch that UB Black's latest victim is actually a Trainer that it's using as both a stabilizer and shield since its true form might be incorporeal. But if, [he emphasizes at the screen] IF it's possible that the UB is able to hide itself away in its vessel like other Outsiders have been known to do, then we have to be on the highest alert when bringing people into Paradise. Aether, if you are listening, listen carefully. I don't know if you have a way to detect…
[Ilima pauses as though he heard or sensed something and gives a subtle glance over his shoulder. He quickly reaches for the camera and slips it back into the blackness of his pocket.]
Ilima:
But I highly doubt this UB would be bold enough to enter in plain sight.
Lillie:
[Seems to notice it about the same time he did. Grips Gladion's shoulder.] Go back, go back, just, like, ten seconds!
[Gladion rewinds and puts the video at half speed. There's definitely something in the background as an object falls outside the glass doorway, then starts to lift. While it's impossible to make out a form, just as Ilima goes to glance behind him, a bright pair of lights shaped like a huge set of eyes appears in the space behind him. The vision blurs as the camera gets moved and finally goes dark again. Gladion gives a cautionary glance at his sister, seeing the distress on her face, but the temptation is too great. He sets it back to normal speed, curious to know if there's more.
A shrill screech followed by the sound of the door breaking mixes with the startled shout from the young agent. It must have been quick. The shuffle of cloth, the pounding on the boat's hard wooden floor, the metallic claws likely carving into the narrow walls like the president had seen when they went to investigate. Gladion's hand hovers over the mouse but he just can't bring himself to turn it off yet. Lillie turns the chair away to get up and covers her ears as she anticipates the screaming.]
Lillie:
[Even if they couldn't see, her mind reeled as she could well imagine it.] Gladion, please! I think we know what happens from here.
Gladion:
Huh? [Looks over to realize she's not next to him anymore. Stands up to see her just as she steps out the door.] Lillie, come back! We still need to discuss… [He leans out the office and sees her stepping quickly, but not rushed enough to alert anyone passing by that something was wrong. Sighs. He'll catch her later when she's had time to talk to Wicke and calm down. Lillie was right though, after this was likely several hours of drifting at sea and no new information.]
“Fast, aren't you?”
[A consistent wave of static starts to roll down the screen, varying in thickness, but a strained guttural voice comes in almost clear.]
“There’s nowhere to run here. Why don't you fight back?”
Gladion:
… … …? [That wasn't Ilima. Turns around and slowly approaches the desk again in curiosity.]
Ilima:
Exactly. [Strained as though under the weight of something and filled with anger as opposed to fear.] We both know what happens now… is inevitable. The plan is… in motion… and you can't stop it. You WILL lose… even… if I can't win.
[There comes something like… laughter. A hissing sound so close to the mic, it had to have been on top of him. Ilima has nothing to retort with as the only sound is a restrained whine from the pain. The screen suddenly starts to brighten. So bright that the camera is somewhat able to peer at the terrible, twisted face, though it's obscured by its view through the mesh of cloth. Gladion feels his own heart start to race as it appears to look straight at him, the dread to realize this was likely the last thing their guest had seen before passing out. The large glowing eyes set deeply into a black mask that spiked at the edges, ended at the nose, and a pale human mouth with an arrogant grin that opens as if ready to feed before everything suddenly turns into indiscernible static.]
Gladion:
[Jumped back as he hadn't expected the abrupt visual but he's a bit glad Lillie left after all. He cranks down the volume of the static and goes back to pause on the attempted view of the face and thinks on the agent's advice. A human… No, a monster with a human mask. How were they ever going to find him?]
=+=
[It had been a long day, but Lillie returned to the quiet of the hospital ward that evening. Having just seen Ilima in the video earlier, it's almost surreal to come back and see him so still. Gently taking his hand, she tries to smile as she gives it a pat.]
Lillie:
Welcome home. [Glances around the room with a bit of a sigh.] I'm not sure if you can hear me, but… Thank you. For trying, at least. It might make you happy to know that we got your message. Even though I'm not sure how much it helps since we don't really have a way to tell Shadows apart from anyone else until something happens. [Let's him go and eases his arm back to his side] … … I'm probably talking to one right now. [Tries to sound hopeful] We'll take care of you though. And Professor Kukui, if we can find him. It may not ideal but… But we'll figure out something.
[Listens to the monitor beeping as he continues to sleep. She doesn't really expect any sort of response, but after a moment she finally comes out of her daydreaming and goes to sit down in the visitor's seat.]
Lillie: All this planning, it's hard to believe we're finally doing this. [She thought of all her friends in Alola. Of what Gladion said before about bracing herself for even more bad news. She thought of Necrozma's first appearance when her mother fell from the Ultra Wormhole onto the altar, frightened and injured, telling them to run. Run. Run. It's all she ever did, wasn't it? But one person kept coming to mind through all of this. Was Roark still okay? Was he even still out there somewhere?]

The bios of the Aether Foundation.
Y'know, Faba was portrayed in a pretty incel-ish way in the Adventures SM arc. He pushed Mohn into an ultra wormhole in an attempt to kill him, tried comforting the widow Lusamine and was enraged when she pulled away from him, conspiring to ruin her life and the lives of her kids, and was the one who orchestrated her descent to madness.
Considering what this says, it adds context to his portrayal there.

Liliaceae - A Lilligant and Lillie Fic
Tumblr media
[Read on Ao3!]
Rated: G Pokemon Sun/Moon Canon Typical Lusamine Abuse Words: 3.4k
Lillie and Lilligant grow up side by side. I had the honour of writing this for the grass type zine! At the time of posting leftover sales are set to open next week.
--
Lillie is young, and her mother sits with her in the gardens of Aether Paradise. The sun filters in through ornate glass ceilings, scattering across the greenery stretching out as far as Lillie can see.
On days like this, Lillie sits out in the grass; in her mother’s lap. It’s just right like that, the grass and leaves just as much a part of her home as her room, her bed.
Lusamine strokes Lillie’s hair and smiles.
“My little sprout, you like being out with the plants, don’t you.”
Lillie giggles and nods emphatically.
“Good, good. You’re a little flower just like them, did you know that?”
Lillie does, but she likes to hear it anyway.
“All these plants are working hard to grow! You’re going to bloom into a lovely flower like them, right?”
“Right!”
Lusamine laughs, planting a kiss on the top of Lillie’s head.
“That’s my Lillie.”
***
Lilligant is a lot taller than Lillie was expecting her to be. Lillie stares up with wonder at the Pokemon by her mother’s side.
“Isn’t she lovely, Lillie?”
Lillie nods shyly, keeping her hands clasped in front of her. She looks just like the princesses in Lillie’s fairytale books. Like her mother reads to her at bedtime.
“One of the new foundation researchers is this wonderful young woman from Unova, and she brought this sweetheart along with her!”
Lusamine smiles lovingly at the Pokémon, giving her a gentle stroke on the top of her bright orange flower.
“Get along well with Lilligant, alright Lillie? Promise your mother.”
I will,” Lillie replies, voice clear like she’s been taught.
“Wonderful! My lilies. Be good sisters to each other, yes?”
And Lillie nods calmly, but her heart races with excitement at the idea.
A sister!
***
Lillie spends her days hiding away in the gardens of Aether Paradise.
She’s a stain of pale blue in the vivid greens, straying out from the crisp white paths. She giggles, trying to cover the sound with her hands as she darts through the gardens, grass skimming her socks and tingeing them green.
It’s Ferroseed’s turn to be ‘it’, hopping after everyone as they run away to hide.
Lillie keeps running, trying to find a place to hide.
Her attention is pulled when she hears Lilligant trill softly, but all she can see is a large bush. Lilligant’s head pops out after a moment, and she beckons Lillie forward.
Lillie grins and dives in, pushing up close against Lilligant. Lilligant’s arms hold her tight so they can both fit, and Lillie holds her back. The brambles poke through Lillie’s braids, but she doesn’t even notice. She gets caught on a branch when the game is over and she tries to crawl out, tumbling over. With a gentle pull, Lilligant helps Lillie up.
***
“Lillie, what are you doing?”
The question shouldn't be startling, but her mother's tone makes Lillie jump all the same. She jolts back from Lilligant’s head, dropping the necklace she’d made. The clumsy knot holding the yarn in place comes undone; the chunky plastic letter beads clatter against the floor.
“I-I just wanted to-“
Lusamine clicks her tongue, bending over Lillie to scoop up the beads.
“Don’t go putting things on Lilligant, okay? Her flower is very delicate, I’ve told you this.”
And Lillie wants to protest that she was being careful and she was being delicate, but the words get caught in her throat, so she just nods. Lusamine smiles, patting Lillie on the back.
“That’s a good girl.”
As she lifts her hand, her fingers curl around the necklace Lillie had made for herself. It matched Lilligants necklace, the same colourful beads in a random order. The only difference was that instead of “Lilligant”, Lillie’s necklace spelled out her own name, with an upside down 7 in place of one of the L’s.
The beads clatter against each other as Lusamine lifts the necklace off of Lillie, and walks away without another word.
***
Lillie kicks her feet out under the table, rustling the silk tablecloth that stretches across it end to end. Gently, Lilligant places one of its arms across Lillie’s lap, a motion to still her.
Lillie pouts, but tucks her legs beneath her chair, crossing her ankles to keep them still. She’s been sitting here for too long.
Of course, Lillie is never a fan of these fancy dinners anyway. Her mother sits on one end of the table, and a handful of strange grown-ups Lillie doesn’t know sit all around. Their eyes tear into Lillie, plucking away her petals until all that’s left is a wavering stem. She hates the feeling.
She doesn't listen to what they’re saying, all their words are knotted and tangled in ways Lillie doesn’t recognize. Instead she watches the way Lilligant preens under the attention, nodding politely at everyone.
“I must say,” Says one man, “If you manage your company as well as you manage your daughter there, we’re sure to be in good hands.”
Lusamine smiles widely, raising a hand to her cheek.
“Why, how kind of you.”
“Yes, your daughter has such excellent manners,” Another man chimes in, grinning over towards Lusamine. “And I suppose Lillie’s manners are acceptable as well.”
Lillie’s stomach drops as the adults crowded around the table laugh and laugh. She looks over to Lilligant, laughing along with everyone else. So Lillie listens. Waits for her mother’s reply, waits for her to say something that will make Lillie feel less shaky.
“Thank you,” Lusamine replies, “I take great care in raising her! It’s a lot of work and dedication to make a Lilligant bloom so vibrantly. For something so beautiful though, I cherish the time spent caring for Lilligant, fussy as she may be. Thank goodness Lillie’s such a quiet girl, not troublesome at all.”
The compliment should relieve Lillie, shouldn’t it?
“I wish she could be a bit more like Lillgant though…”
Lillie just feels herself tie further and further in knots.
***
Lillie watches the pile of discarded tiger lilies grow higher and higher on the bathroom counter.
She sits perched on a stool as her mother combs out the petals, leaves and twigs.
The beautiful flowers Lillie had picked and so carefully woven into her hair each came out torn and crumpled, and Lillie tries to pretend she doesn’t care.
“I’ve told you not to mess around with the garden, haven’t I Lillie? Did Mother do a bad job?”
Lusamine asks. It’s the fifth time she’s said as much since she started combing out Lillie’s hair.
“Now I have to untangle all these flowers you’ve gotten caught in here… You know you’re not to bother me when I’m pruning Lilligant, don’t you?”
“Yes,” Lillie replies, voice small.
“Good.”
Lillie bites her tongue so she won’t make noise when her mother yanks another flower out, catching part of her hair with it.
“It’s all so caught in there…” Lusamine mutters, “Next time I’ll have to take the garden shears and just cut it all off.”
Lillie stiffens and Lusamine laughs.
“Oh, I’m joking Lillie, I’m joking. Don’t worry, I’d never do anything to ruin your pretty hair like that.”
She laughs some more, though Lillie just stays still and quiet. A good girl, not troublesome at all.
When Lusamine finishes she brushes the flowers into the trash without a second thought, and resumes pruning Lilligant. Secretly, Lillie presses herself flat against the wall around the corner, carefully peers her head in now and then for a quick glance.
There’s something about the way that her mother strokes the top of Lilligant’s head that dyes Lillie just as green.
***
The strap of the duffle bag cuts deep into Lillie’s shoulder as she sprints through the blindingly bright lab. The white walkways of the conservation area slice into the greenery.
She’s careful on her feet, she knows the paths better than she knows her mother. Lillie hops over a crack in the walkway. It’s easy to remember, always right on the left from the tree Lilligant showed her to climb when they were younger.
She used to play here, every heart pounding turn is a corner she once chased Bouncesweet through, found Pansage hiding behind. For a moment, Lillie wonders if any of them will miss her when she vanishes.
The thought vanishes as soon as it appears. She can’t even afford the luxury of worrying about it right now.
***
“Lillie, would you mind helping me here?”
Professor Burnet’s voice echoes from the front porch. Lillie startles up, sitting on the couch.
Burnet had found her lying on the beach merely a week prior, but Lillie is determined to be useful as soon as possible. She’ll be a good girl, not troublesome at all. When Lillie looks outside, she squints against the early morning sunlight as it trickles over the sea. Burnet waves her over, gesturing towards the planters on the porch.
“Couldja help me plant these seedlings? I love to garden, but it’s slow. Faster if we go together, though!”
Lillie agrees quickly, sets herself to work with the trowel the professor hands her.
It’s steady, quiet work, and Lillie finds it soothing. Being out here, doing something . She’s been hiding herself away since she got here, it’s hard when she feels like she’ll wilt with the slightest touch.
It’s strange though, how gentle Burnet is. Not just with the seeds, with Lillie, with life.
“This one’s called an Allium,” She says as she tucks it into the soil, “When it’s still just sprouting like this, it looks a bit like a Petilil, doesn’t it?”
Lillie's heart catches in her throat. The thought of Lilligant, still with her mother. She nods.
“Back where I grew up, we had Petilil in the forest behind our house,” Burnet recalls wistfully, “They were such troublemakers! Always racing about and scaring Stoutland. Ah… we loved them for it though.”
And it’s strange, Lillie still feels herself slightly on edge, but with Professor Burnet, it doesn’t seem so stifling. Just a tad, she can relax.
Gently, Lillie sets a Rawst Berry plant into the soil, and watches the way it stains her hands. It doesn’t feel as rough as she was expecting, and when she pulls them back, she finds herself satisfied instead of disgusted.
Maybe she likes gardening too.
***
Lillie finds herself coming out to garden more and more with each passing day. Bit by bit, the porch fills with planters and pots. Day by day, the sprouts grow a bit taller. As the flowers and leaves begin to grow into place, Lillie finds herself settling into the Professors’ house more and more.
***
Lillie’s hand trembles as she grips the garden shears. The edge of the blade pushes into her braid, but she doesn’t bring the handles together. She just shakes.
“Pass those to me for a second, Lillie?”
Burnet’s hand is warm and firm, fingers gently taking the shears out from her loose grip.
“Bit hasty for a haircut, hm?”
Her voice is light; less of an accusation and more of a curiosity.
“I-“ Lillie stutters. “I just…”
Her words come out as a mumble, hiding her face away.
Burnet nods.
“Time for a haircut then? Your hair is pretty long now!”
Lillie nods quietly, then hesitates and shakes her head.
“I- I don’t know.”
“Don’t know what?”
“D- do I want to cut my hair? Or do I just… want something different.”
Burnet hums lightly, considering Lillie’s words.
“Well, it’s only hair, it’ll grow back. If you want to switch things up, why not try?”
Lillie doesn’t look convinced. She tugs at the ends of her braids, yanking harder as if she could pull them right off.
“How about I make you a deal then, alright?”
“W-what?”
Burnet takes Lillie’s hand off her braids and into her own.
“First, when we’re done here in the garden, I’ll go see about getting you an appointment with this nice hairstylist I know in Konikoni City for next week. Then you’ve got a whole week to decide what you want her to do, and either way we’ll make a little day of it.”
“R-really?”
“Of course! It’ll be fun.”
Lillie smiles quietly, nodding her head down.
“Thank you… W-what’s the second thing, then?”
Burnet holds up the shears in her other hand.
“Save the garden tools for the plants, and not the you, alright?”
Lillie lets the smallest laugh spill from her lips.
“I can do that.”
***
“Thank you.” Lillie whispers late one night, when nothing of note drones on the radio and she sits with both Professors on the couch. “And… I’m sorry.”
Professor Kukui gives her a sideways look.
“What are you sorry for?”
Lillie hesitates for a moment, toying with the edge of a pillow she sits with.
“For causing you both so much trouble. N-not just taking me in but.. Taking care of me. I-I know I’m a bother, but I promise I’ll get better at being your assistant.”
The professors share a glance.
“Well, you’re the best assistant I’ve ever had, so no worries there!” Professor Kukui says.
“But what’s this about you being a bother?” Burnet finishes.
Lillie hugs the pillow against her chest.
“I-I’m like a Lilligant, aren’t I? Needy and high maintenance, but without any of the beauty to justify it. I used to be better, not troublesome…” She trails off.
“Lillie…”
“You’re not a burden, Lillie.” Kukui says, “I promise ya! But even if you were, that’s alright, yeah?”
Burnet nods.
“Kids should be cared for! And caring for you means you get the chance to live and grow, which is always worth it.”
Lillie shakes her head.
“But… I should be able to get by without imposing…”
Burnet reaches for Lillie’s hand.
“There’s more than that though. You shouldn’t have to ‘get by’, you should get to thrive, to bloom! I want that for you, we do. It’s our choice to put the effort in. So you can be the best Lillie you can be!”
Both Professors smile at Lillie, and Lillie feels so much warmer.
“You are like Lilligant,” Burnet continues, “Because Lilligant can actually survive quite well without a blooming flower. You don’t hear about that often, because most people prioritize making them bloom. And yeah, it's effort, but it’s well spent so they can flourish. I want that for you.”
For the first time, Lillie understands.
***
The Lilligant in Lillie’s memories is always so lovely, a refined beauty her mother adores. She doesn’t want to admit it, but part of Lillie thinks she probably hated Lilligant, at least when she was young.
Now, as she stares it down in the depths of Ultra Space, Lillie can’t find those feelings at all. Lilligant attacks and attacks, unceasing Vine Whips and Petal Dances. It just feels… desperate. Like she’s crying out, begging for help even as she keeps exchanging blows.
They’re both Lillies, after all, but Lilligant looks wilted. It scowls at her, but Lillie just feels pity. And fear, yes, Lillie is terrified, but she’s ready. She’ll say what she needs to say, not just for her, but for Nebby, for Liligant, for all her mother’s pokemon.
“That is terrible, Mother! You are terrible!”
And yet despite everything she’s done, Lillie still rushes to her Mother’s side when she falls.
“Lillie…” Lusamine croaks out, reaching up to her daughter. Her voice rasps, her hands clammy as they stoke Lillie’s hair. “When did you… start becoming beautiful?"
Though Lillie remains silent, her mind answers regardless.
“When I got the chance to grow.”
***
The professors make it to the Altar of the Moone in record time, and Lillie finds herself enveloped by them in an instant. Worried hands check her over for injury, Kukui holds her shoulder as if he’s worried she’ll disappear if he lets go.
It gets very crowded very fast, Nanu and a slew of Aether workers descending upon everyone present in an attempt to get everything sorted out.
For now, the professors drive back everyone who even attempts to talk to Lillie, answering on her behalf or telling them simply to ask later.
Lillie’s grateful.
In the flurry of questions they ask her, Lillie manages to ask one of her own.
“Mother’s Pokémon… please they- were they-“
“Don’t worry,” Kukui reassures her, “We’ll take care of it.”
“No!” Lillie protests, heart leaping into her throat. “No, I mean… they… Mother’s Pokemon, Lilligant and they– they’re like me. Please, help them.”
“Lillie…”
Lillie ducks her head down.
“I just… want them to have a chance too. To grow.”
Burnet strokes the top of Lillie’s head.
“Don’t worry, Lillie. We’ll make sure they’re alright.”
“Thank you.”
And Lillie breathes a sigh of relief.
“Now,” Burnet says, “Do you want to go home?”
Lillie looks back and forth between the two of them, who give her a slight nod. To imagine sinking into their too large sofa, to curl up under the worn rose quilt… it would be the most blissful thing in the world.
“Please.”
***
Lillie stays on the boat’s deck for a while even after Melemele has disappeared from view. She leans against the railing, resting her cheek against the cold metal as she stares out into the distance.
Leaving the deck would mean really accepting the choice she’s made, if she sat with her mother inside.
So when the first rays of sunlight begin to peak over the horizon, Lillie watches silently. A trickle of light spreads out into a burst that splays out across the whole ocean, setting off sparkles that bob about with the waves.
The sunshine is warm on Lillie’s face, despite the ocean spray.
And when the sun comes out like this, Lillie feels as if she could open herself up and unfurl every last petal of hers. A softer smile on her face, Lillie turns, and heads inside.
***
“Alola!”
The video connection is slightly spotty, so Lillie watches the Professors wave to her in choppy frames, voice’s lagging behind their smiles. But she’s so happy to see them, she finds she doesn’t mind.
“How have you been?” Lillie asks. It feels so long since she’s seen them, each mundane detail of their life something she misses.
“Fantastic!” Professor Kukui replies, “We’ve been great. Aside from worrying about you, of course.”
Professor Burnet nods emphatically.
“The Alliums are blooming wonderfully now! I’ll send some photographs in the mail soon!”
“Hau and Selene are well too,” Professor Kukui continues, nodding, “They’ve been trading the champion title back and forth like it’s a tennis match for a few weeks now, yeah!”
“Things are going good at Aether Paradise! Bewear, Milotic and them? They’ve all taken really well to living in the Conservation Area full time! Lilligant especially, she’s been playing with all the little pokemon and taking good care of them. She’s just like a big sister!”
Lillie blinks for a moment, processing.
“How-“
“I could tell you were going to ask.” Burnet finishes, a bit sheepishly.
Lillie nods, though she blushes slightly.
“Thank you…”
“And what about you?” Burnet asks.
Lillie startles slightly.
“We’re good too! Mother has been improving. Slowly but… improving. Spring in Cerulean City is very… healing, so I think that helps her.”
But to Lillie’s response, Burnet just shakes her head gently.
“Lillie, I was asking how you are. Are you doing alright?”
Maybe once that sort of reply would’ve caught Lillie off guard, but it simply fills her with gratitude.
“I’m well too! I-I am looking forward to coming home, very much, but for now… I’m happy I’m here! Taking my first steps toward- oh! That reminds me, I have someone I want you to meet!”
Lillie ducks down, disappearing from the display for a moment.
The picture blurs a bit, and when it refocuses, Lillie is proudly holding out her new partner to the screen. A Bulbasaur, rather small even by Bulbasaur standards, grins widely at the camera.
“Her name is Yuri!” Lillie says, pulling Yuri in for a hug. “She’s my new partner and she’s so very sweet. I want you to meet her when I come home again. We can go to Aether Paradise, and see Lilligant and everyone. I’m sure Yuri and Lilligant would get along very well! We’ll all come… and by then I’ll have raised Yuri to be a beautiful Venusaur! Right, Yuri?”
Yuri snuggles in closer to Lillie. Her smile grows just a touch wider.
“So- y-yes! I’m doing great. Me and Yuri…. We’re going to grow together! You’ll be so proud when we come back!”
But really, Professor Burnet sees Lillie and can’t help but already be so proud of how far she’s come already.
“I’m looking forward to it.” She says, and smiles at Lillie, in bloom.

Happy Halloween~ <3
Kofi
Yes I know when I posted here there's already a Chapter 17. I think I combined a pair of chapters somewhere between editings, but it's probably easier to read the full archive on A03 anyway. But which do you prefer?
