What if Alola had gyms?

I really like how the Alola games broke with the formula by using the trials. It was a breath of fresh air in a very formulaic franchise. But I also like what ifs so I'm going to come up with gym leader teams that could have been used if the games went with gyms instead. USUM has 8 trials, so I'll use those as the basis for the gyms, with the trial captains being the gym leaders (Ryuki can fill in as the dragon gym leader). I'll take the totem Pokemon and the trial captain teams from the games into account. All Pokemon I use will be from the USUM dex.

For Ilima's normal type gym I'm going to take a cue from the IRL games with their version exclusive totems. I'm also going to give him 3 Pokemon. Most first gym leaders start with 2, but USUM are some of the hardest games and (assuming the gym battles take place in the same locations as the trials) the player will have decent experience and plenty of Pokemon to choose from by the time they reach him. His team will include his Smeargle (with a damaging attack to counter the player's starter), Pikipek, and either a Gumshoos or Alolan Raticate depending on version. I think gym leaders should showcase new species so I will be giving these leaders lots of Alolan Pokemon. For a post-game rematch team, he will have Smeargle (kitted out as a support mon), Toucannon, Gumshoos/Alolan Raticate, Oranguru, Bewear, and Drampa.

Lana as the water type gym leader will use Wingull, Dewpider, and Wishiwashi. Just like her trial, I will rule that there will be automatic rain during her battle to power up her water type moves and let Wingull use Hydration. For her post-game rematch team she will use Drizzle Pelipper, Araquanid, Toxapex, Swift Swim Kabutops, and a shiny Gyarados to reference her claim that she caught one during her trial. A powerful rain team.

Kiawe will have a team with Drought Torkoal, Magmar (because his house is full of them), and Alolan Marowak. I considered giving him automatic sun, but since the real game didn't I won't. I didn't give him Salazzle in his initial team because it's Plumeria's ace and I wanted to let her feel more unique. It will show up on Kiawe's rematch team of Drought Torkoal, Magmortar, Alolan Marowak, Salazzle, Volcarona, and Turtonator.

Mallow's grass gym will include Lileep (to counter a lot of common grass weaknesses), Whimsicott (for prankster Sunny Day), and Lurantis (to abuse sun-boosted Synthesis and Solar Blade). Her rematch team will be Cradily, Whimsicott, Shiinotic, Dhelmise, Lurantis, and Alolan Exeggutor.

Sophocles as the electric-type gym leader will have a team of four for his initial battle. His team will be Togedemaru (with Magnet Rise and Spiny Shield), Lanturn (to counter ground), Alolan Graveler (optional eviolite), and Vikavolt. His rematch team will evolve Graveler to Golem and add Magnezone and Alolan Raichu. Raichu is Hau's signature mon, but once you get into the postgame I feel like it's fine to double up.

Acerola is my favorite trial captain so I want to give her a good gym leader team. Her initial team will be Jellicent, Pallosand, Dhelmise, and Mimikyu for a very diverse team that can cover a lot of bases. Also Dhelmise is underappreciated so I want to show it off. Her rematch team will add Gengar and Froslass to that.

Ryuki's dragon trial will showcase the new dragon types with Alolan Exeggutor, Turtonator, Drampa, and Kommo-o for a team that can hit with a lot of coverage and can perform defensively and offensively. For his rematch team I'll add Salamence (to reference how you can get a Salamence before the first Kahuna if you're extremely lucky and/or patient), and Dragalge (to counter fairy).

Finally, Mina's fairy gym will have 5 members and I'm going to make it a double battle. That way she can use Florges and Comfey to their full potential as supporters. Also Florges references her flower-based trial in USUM and you can't do the Hawai'i region without the lei Pokemon. Then she will have Clefable, Shiinotic (let's be homest, Mina probably appreciates mushrooms if you know what I mean), and Ribombee for a healing- and status-heavy team. Her rematch team will add Mr. Mime to double down on her theme.

If the trial captains become gym leaders, its only fair to make the Kahunas into the elite four. A lot of them are elite four in the games and, be honest, are you really going to miss Kahili? I didn't think so. This would be out of character for Nanu, but this is speculative anyway so its fine. As usual, the E4 members will use 5 Pokemon in their initial battle and 6 for rematches.

Hala's team will have Bewear and Passimian to include some Alola fighting types, Hariyama (Hala does practice a variant of Sumo after all), Pangoro (to counter psychic), and will keep Crabominable as his ace. His rematch team will add Heracross.

Olivia is the only E4 member whose ace I'm going to change, but not by much. She will use midday Lycanroc instead of midnight because midday is just better in every way. I'm also going to give her a prehistoric themed team since you buy the fossils in her store. Lycanroc can be a dire wolf to stick with the theme. Her team will be Tyranitar (for sandstorm), Aerodactyl (to counter fighting and grass), Tyrantrum, Carracosta (to counter ground and steel), and Lycanroc. Her rematch team will add Cradily.

Nanu can keep his Persian even though its not a very good Pokemon because I just can't see him without a cat. At least Fur Coat is good. His team will be Krookodile, Contrary Malamar (to counter psychic and ruin set-up strats with Topsy-Turvy), Alolan Muk (to counter fairy and fighting), Scrafty (it's a gang member and Nanu is a cop so it makes sense he's capture one), and Alolan Persian. His rematch team will add Sharpedo.

Hapu's team will have Alolan Dugtrio, Gastrodon, Flygon, Golurk, and Mudsdale as her ace. Very similar to her Kahuna battle in game, which is pretty good with her being the last Kahuna. Her rematch team will add Krookodile.
