Au: You're a famous popstar on tour, and Abby is one of your backup dancers. You guys get very touchy and flirty during certain songs, and the fans start to notice how playful you're both being with each other. You guys try to hold back from each other, but eventually, you get together and fall for each other.

The ticket lines were flowing with people, like, lots of them. More than you’d ever seen during your tour. Tonight’s show was in Seattle. Your set started in fifteen minutes and you and your team were going through the logistics of how things would go. You stand there, hands on your hips as you keep a straight and serious face while lending a listening ear, giving a few nods from time to time. Abby couldn’t keep her eyes off of you. Her eyes kept tracing over you. The entirety of you. The oversized denim, the Calvin Klein print across your thong, the black top looking just perfect against your skin, everything drove her insane. She’d have to thank your stylists personally the next time she saw them because each time she found herself looking at you, her face would heat up. A loud clap from the director snapped her out of her trance. She followed the other backup dancers, who were also following you. Before entering the stage, you take a breath and hope for the best.
You take a few steps on the large stage, smiling as the crowd roars in cheers and applause. You wave as you approach your mic. Your in-ears had already been in and you were waiting for the signal to begin your set. Before this, you thank the crowd for coming and some other things before it begins. It starts off slow, a soft song that hadn’t required much choreography was sung. Your voice had the crowd entranced, smiling and recording you. The band played in the same smooth and entrancing manner you had already set. After the song concludes, you begin moving to your position for the next song. “Song begins in 3.. 2.. 1..” the woman in your in-ears said as a metronome ticked at the same beat of the song. The lights on stage turn red, smoke rises from the stage. The song was sensual and provocative, your voice was smooth (as always) and siren-like. You and Abby find yourself dancing up against each other. Caught up in your song, your hand snakes around her waist as you sing the provocative lyrics to her with half lidded eyes and a small smile. Abby panicked internally. She curses under her breath as you sing to her. Her body heats up and her heart rate increases. She heard the loud noise of squealing and applauding from the crowd. She felt dizzy as you and her parted ways momentarily as you continued singing. Your touch sear on her skin, 1000 degrees is what it felt like to her. Your hands lingered on her body way longer than you practiced. And god, those eyes she gives you. They made you feel a little dizzy. Those green eyes under the red light, the strands of blond hair sticking to her forehead, the way her eyes fluttered whenever she made eye contact with you made your heart flutter. It seemed so unreal, the way her large hands rested on your body whenever the move called for it or how she smiled at you nervously when you got a little too close. Anyone with eyes could see that you both had some kinda feelings for eachother. And this definitely wouldn’t be easy to forget.
The concert went on for what seemed like forever before you were on your last song. You and the rest of your dancers stand in the middle of the stage, attempting to catch your breath as you hold your ending pose. Abby looks at you and you look at her. The tension from before begins to rise again. It was palpable. “You don’t know what you do to me.” Abby whispered, only for your ears. “I know exactly what I do to you, Abby.” You respond with a smile. After a few more seconds, you finally exit the stage with everyone else. You enter your dressing room, closing the door behind you as you take a few photos of yourself, uploading them to social media before scrolling through your notifications. As usual, they were full of mentions, comments, and likes. They were also full of your little.. moments on stage with Abby. Your body becomes hot as you watch it over. You loved the way she looked at you. Like you were some sort of goddess. Or like you were the most beautiful woman in the world. You find yourself smiling at your phone as you read your comments from your fans talking about the tension between the two of you.
As Abby sat with the other dancers, all she could think about was you. “God, you’ve got it bad, Abby.” One woman with curly hair says as she looks at her for a moment, then playfully rolls her eyes. “I’ve got it bad?” Abby acted clueless, but she knew exactly what the woman meant. “Oh shut up, don’t play dumb with. I see exactly how the two of you look at eachother. If you like her that much then you should just like, tell her or something.” The woman suggested with a shoulder shrug, then picking up her phone and texting with someone. In a perfect world, Abby would’ve already asked you out, and she would’ve already been your girlfriend. But she didn’t want you to think she was like, weird or something. “I mean.. the worst she could say is no, right?” Abby mumbles to herself. Eeexactly. Now go.” The woman suggested with a smile.
And after that little push, she walks to your dressing room. Her hand trembled on the doorknob. That was just her nerves trying to pull her back into the other room. Her hands become clammy along with her nerves. But Abby’s boots definitely weren’t quiet, and you’d already known she was there. “The doors unlocked.” You yell out to her. “..Goddamnit.” She mumbled to herself as she opened the door, walking in and closing it. You were still looking down at your phone for a moment before you turned it off and look over at her. “Hey.” “Hi.” You smile at her. “So uh, what brings ya here?” “Just wanted to check on you that’s all, but if you’re busy I’ll just go—“ Her hand darts towards the doorknob and you stand up and stop her. “No.. stay. I’m not busy.” Abby never listened to someone so fast. Her eyes meet yours and she looks around the door nervously. There was a small smile on her face. You found her nervous smile cute. You place your hand on her face, gently turning her face to look at you.
“Keep those pretty eyes on me, Abby.” You whisper to her as you look her in the eyes. Her face heats up again as you speak to her in that soft voice. “God.. why do you do this to me?” She asked as she looked at you. Her eyes linger on your lips and then returning to your eyes. For the time she’d become acquainted with you, never did she think she’d be here feeling so tempted to ask you out. “Abby..” You whispered to her again as you looked at her, getting a little closer to her. “I like you.” “I like you too. Please let me kiss you.” She sounded so needy, and you couldn’t just ignore that voice. Almost in an instant, you crash your lips against hers. It just felt so.. right. And so natural. Her hands gently touch your arm, then your back. She drags her hand up your back and gently resting it on the back of your neck. Her touch left goosebumps across your skin. God she was so gentle, and it drove you crazy. Your hand finds itself entangled in her hair that was wavy, not being in its usual braid. She let out a little whine the more she kissed you. Slowly she pushes her tongue into your mouth, and they dance furiously, intertwining in a passionate dance for a few more seconds before she pulls away to catch her breath.
You both look at eachother breathlessly. That moment alone had solidified that you had in fact fallen for eachother. “Again.” Abby says, and you nod before you begin making out again. You stumble towards a small soft. Abby sits down and you straddle her lap. Your lips were on hers for a few moments before moving to her neck. You move slowly, making her wait. Her hands rest on your hips, and occasionally slide up and down your thighs. “God, you have no idea how bad I've wanted this. Watching you all that time, the way you look at me, that voice of yours. It drives me crazy.” For the duration of the tour, you had been restricting yourself. They say not to mix love with your work life, and in some cases it would make sense. But how could you ever do that for a girl this irresistible? Of course Abby restrained herself in the same manner because she didn’t wanna ruin things between the two of you, but now you were here and you had no intention whatsoever about going back to the way things were. Every wall you’d built up had been smashed down by the flurry of emotions Abby brought to you with her touch, her voice, and her want for you. There was no ‘line’ that you could or couldn’t cross, because.. the world is infinite. And in this moment, you felt infinite. And it was all because of her. Your lips trail back up to hers for a moment before she pulls away to say something. “I swear, after this tour, I’ll properly ask you out.” Abby declares as she looks at you. “I can’t wait. I want to be with you now. Abby, I want to be your girlfriend.” You admit as you look her in the eyes. A part of her hadn’t expected that. Her eyes widen a little in shock before she smiled at you. “.. Alright then. We’re officially girlfriends.” She said with a smile before you lean down to kiss her again.

Rocky even penned Simons' tribute when the designer was selected as one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People of 2017. For starters, he's frequented his designs, including one of his Calvin Klein looks for the Met Gala this year, where A$AP attended as part of his entourage. The fashion-forward rapper has sat front row at shows from Gucci to Dior, and name-dropped nearly every designer on the planet (including Simons) in his hit "Fashion Killa," but he has a distinct admiration for Raf. Now the lyric appears several times in his new song. The cheeky clip was in response to one of Simons' recent interviews, where he implied brands like Vetements and Off-White were not "original." Rocky responded with high praise for the designer in a tweet and that video clip. Rocky originally teased the track in January when he shared Twitter video with the lyrics "Please don't touch my Raf" from the studio. (Playboi Carti is apparently included in the chorus, too.) The song premiered on the Ocean's Blonded Radio station on Apple Music. The rapper released a new track titled "RAF," named after designer Raf Simons, early Monday morning featuring Frank Ocean, Quavo and Lil Uzi Vert. This feature is very helpful for people with vision, slow reading or similar problems.A$AP Rocky is undoubtedly a fashion fanatic, and his latest song just provides further proof. Jealous Guys
Something I’ve been thinking about for a while now is the different ways jealousy manifested for John and Paul over the course of their friendship.
I’m going to look at John and Paul in turn and have a look at some of the key ways jealousy appeared, before, during and after the Beatles period. This will be a looooong post so if you want to go on deep dive keep reading below.
John
Jealousy was something that John acknowledged as a big part of his personality, as far as I’m aware, he only acknowledged his jealousy publicly in terms of his relationship with Yoko but I believe jealousy was a feature of all of John’s major relationships. John’s first real partnership was with Pete Shotton, his childhood best friend, and Pete has outlined how John’s jealousy and possessiveness was a feature in their friendship with them falling out when Pete first started showing interest in girls and with John acting out when Pete started to spend more time with other friends, instead of him, here Pete recounts John’s reflection on this period of their friendship:
“Years later John confessed to having felt acutely jealous throughout that interlude: “I was scared shitless I’d lost you after our fight in science class, when you starting playing with David Jones. I really thought I’d gone too far with you that time.“
Pete Shotton, John Lennon: In My Life , 1983
Pete’s recollections establish a pattern in John’s life of acting out due to a fear of abandonment and losing those who are closest to him so it’s not surprising that once John had formed a strong bond with Paul that would stir similar fears in him.
Below I’ve categorised the groups of people that were the focus of John’s jealousy and have picked one person from each group as an example:
Family - Jim McCartney
Paul’s family was and continues to be a big part of his life. From the outset of their friendship, John was made aware of how important Jim was to Paul and vice versa. John and Paul had to skip school to hang out together because Jim wouldn’t have John in their house initially and John confessed his resentment of Jim’s influence over Paul’s life. It appears that after some time John grew tired of having to contend with Jim for the position of the most important person in Paul’s life, and this culminated in John giving Paul a pseudo ultimatum as John discussed in 1971:
“But Paul would always give in to his dad. His dad told him to get a job, he fucking dropped the group and started working on the fucking lorries, saying, "I need a steady career." We couldn't believe it… “So I told him on the phone, "Either come or you're out." So he had to make a decision between me and his dad then, and in the end he chose me”
St. Regis Hotel interview, Sept. 5, 1971
Friends - Mal Evans
Throughout the active years of the band it was typical of them to refer to each other as their best friends and, given the lives they led, I think the simple fact that no one else could understand what it was like to be a Beatle would have meant they all shared a special bond. However, they all had friendships outside of the band and this was something that could cause issues for John when it came to Paul.
According to Tune In, Mal initially became friends with Paul during the band's initial shows at the Cavern Club then, after a suggestion from George, Mal became a part of the Beatles entourage thereafter. Mal had friendships with all the Beatles, as part of their inner circle, but from his comments it appears John took umbrage with the closeness of Mal’s friendship with Paul:
“Paul would suddenly come in with this circle saying, “This is Magical Mystery Tour, will you write that bit?” And I was choked that he’d arranged it all with Mal anyway, for a kickoff, and had all this idea going”
St. Regis Hotel interview, Sept. 5, 1971
Mal also comes up when John discusses his recollections of the writing of Eleanor Rigby:
“So rather than ask me, “John, do these lyrics—” Because by that period, he didn’t want to say that – to me. Okay? So what he would say was, “Hey, you guys, finish off the lyrics,”... “ Now, I sat there with Mal Evans, a road manager who was a telephone installer, and Neil Aspinall, who was a not-completed student accountant who became our road manager. And I was insulted and hurt that he’d thrown it out in the air”...” There might be a version that they contributed, but there isn’t a line in there that they put in.“
Playboy interview, David Sheff 1980
John’s discomfort with the closeness of Paul’s relationship with Mal was something that wasn’t lost on Mal’s wife Lil:
“He was always at their beck and call. He was a nice fella to have around, so much so that it could provoke little jealousies within the band. When I met Yoko years after Mal died, she said John had told her he’d been very jealous at one point of Mal’s relationship with Paul.”
Lil Evans interview with Ray Connolly, 2005
Love interests - Linda McCartney
Throughout their friendship both John and Paul had quite a few love interests, which (to varying degrees) prompted jealousy between them.
Although John displayed jealousy of a few of Paul’s love interests this was no more apparent than with Paul’s first wife Linda McCartney, which is confirmed by both John’s words and actions regarding Linda and her partnership with Paul:
“"Then Klein informed Lennon that McCartney had secretly been increasing his stake in Northern Songs. ‘John flew into a rage,’ recalled Apple executive Peter Brown. ‘At one point I thought he was really going to hit Paul, but he managed to calm himself down.’ One unconfirmed report of this meeting had Lennon leaping towards Linda McCartney, his fists raised in her face"
Peter Doggett, You Never Give Me Your Money
"Int: When did you first meet her [Linda]? John: The first time I saw her was after that press conference to announce Apple in America. We were just going back to the airport and she was in the car with us. I didn't think she was particularly attractive, I wondered what he was bothering having her in the car for. A bit too tweedy, you know. But she sat in the car and took photographs and that was it. And the next minute she's married him."
St. Regis Hotel interview, Sept. 5, 1971
“I was reading your letter and wondering what middle aged cranky Beatle fan wrote it... "What the hell—it’s Linda! . . . Linda— if you don’t care what I say—shut up!—let Paul write—or whatever.”
"Of course, the money angle is important—to all of us—especially after all the petty shit that came from your insane family/in laws—and GOD HELP YOU OUT, PAUL—see you in two years—I reckon you’ll be out then"
Draft letter from John Lennon to Linda McCartney, circa 1971
"The presumption is a) the Beatles would get together again or are even thinking about it and b) if they got together, John and Yoko split, Paul and Linda split"
John (with Yoko) talks to John Fielding on Weekend World, 1973
"John often speculated on why Paul and Linda remained married while, at the same time, resenting their evident happiness, to the extent that he had Green do a tarot reading to ensure him that Paul and Linda were really secretly miserable and were going to divorce within a year"
According to Fred Seaman and John Green, source
Paul
Of course jealousy wasn't a one-way street in the Lennon-McCartney relationship. Unlike with John, for Paul I'm focusing more on the key people I believe his jealousy, regarding John, was directed to:
Stuart Sutcliffe
John met Stu at Art College and struck up a really close friendship with him. At the point that John met Stu, John had already become friends with Paul so Paul felt threatened when Stu entered the picture:
"When he [Stu] came into the band, around Christmas of 1959, we were a little jealous of him; it was something I didn’t deal with very well. We were always slightly jealous of John’s other friendships.
When Stuart came in, it felt as if he was taking the position away from George and me. We had to take a bit of a back seat."
Paul McCartney, Anthology 2000
"Paul was saying something about Stu’s girl – he was jealous because she was a great girl, and Stu hit him, on stage. And Stu wasn’t a violent guy at all."
John Lennon, 1967 Anthology 2000
"I looked up to Stu. I depended on him to tell me the truth. Stu would tell me if something was good and I’d believe him. We were awful to him sometimes. Especially Paul, always picking on him. I used to explain afterwards that we didn’t dislike him, really."
John Lennon, The Beatles Hunter Davies 1968
Yoko Ono
Of all the relationships I've already discussed, the relationship and jealousy displayed from Paul towards Yoko is probably the most widely discussed in Beatles historiography and general discourse. From the official start of Yoko's relationship with John in 1968 it was clear that Paul resented her presence in John's life and her proximity to the band:
"He even sent them [John and Yoko] a hate letter once, unsigned, typed. I brought it in with the morning mail. Paul put most of his fan mail in a big basket and let it sit for weeks, but John and Yoko opened every piece. When they got to the anonymous note, they looked puzzled, looking at each other with genuine pain in their eyes. ‘You and your Jap tart think you’re hot shit’, it said."
Francie Schwartz, Body Count 1972
"Cause she’s [Yoko] very much to do with it from John’s angle, that’s the thing, you know. And I – the thing is that I – there’s— Again, like, there’s always only two answers. One is to fight it, and fight her, and try and get The Beatles back to four people without Yoko, and sort of ask her to sit down at the board meetings. Or else, the other thing is to just realize that she’s there, you know. And he’s not gonna sort of – split with her, just for our sakes."
Paul McCartney, Let It Be Sessions, 1969
"I told John on the phone the other day that at the beginning of last year I was annoyed with him. I was jealous because of Yoko, and afraid about the break-up of a great musical partnership. It’s taken me a year to realise that they were in love. Just like Linda and me."
Paul McCartney, interview with Ray Connolly, 1970
What are the similarities and differences in the way jealousy manifested for John and Paul?
I think it's obvious but bears repeating that both John and Paul displayed jealousy towards other people who they felt would threaten their relationship so that's central to all the instances I have flagged, Jim, Mal, Linda, Stu, Yoko all posed real or imagined threats to John and Paul's partnership.
However, you'll note that I included more sources to display John's jealousy regarding Paul and that I categorised John's jealousy targets whereas I only pulled out two key individuals for Paul, this isn't to say that John was more jealous than Paul was, as jealousy isn't something you can quantify, but to highlight my opinion that Paul's jealousy regarding John was more targeted than John's jealousy regarding Paul. I think what stands out to me is that, I think generally Stu and Yoko are held up as the prime examples of Paul's jealousy of other people getting close to John, as far as we know, Paul never had significant issues with other people who formed close relationships with John like Pete Shotton, Cynthia Lennon, Magic Alex etc., why was that? I think that Paul was more threatened when he felt that John was replacing him so by bringing Stu into the band (even though he wasn't a musician) and Yoko into the studio (one instance where Paul was especially hurt was when John gave Paul's line in The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill to Yoko to sing), Paul perhaps felt that his place as John's primary collaborator was in jeopardy and that he could lose a partnership that had become central to his self-worth as a person - that, I believe, was when his jealousy was most likely to rise to the fore. John, on the other hand, had a much wider range of targets when it came to jealousy regarding Paul, why was John jealous of Linda? Linda wasn't trying to replace John as Paul's collaborator, if anything she wanted the Lennon-McCartney partnership to be stronger. Why was John jealous of Mal? Mal wasn't a musician, Mal was a huge fan of the band and constantly worked to fulfil their requests, so why was John so threatened by his friendship with Paul? For me, John's jealousy regarding Paul was more than just a fear of directly being replaced, I believe John's jealousy was fundamentally triggered by a fear of abandonment. I think the childhood trauma John experienced, of being left by both his parents, meant that whenever any of his close friendships and relationships were threatened, or he felt that someone close to him may leave him, he would act out. John fell out with his childhood best friend Pete when he got a girlfriend, John hit Cynthia when he saw her dancing with Stu, John was rude to several of Paul's love interests and ultimately John never fully accepted Paul's relationship with Linda because, although he could see that she could offer Paul the family life he always wanted, John didn't want Linda to take Paul away and give him a family that meant that Paul would no longer be able to prioritise John in his life as he had in the past.
Ultimately, we'll never know all the ways that jealousy factored into John and Paul's relationship with each other and those around them, as I'm sure it impacted several relationships in more complex ways than I can articulate (i.e. I suspect jealousy played a part in Paul's initial resentment of Brian but they grew closer over time so maybe Paul's jealousy lessened over time or Brian became less of a threat?). I do think it's important to consider that jealousy was present on both sides and was likely a factor in the breakdown of John and Paul's relationship, the breakdown of the Beatles and was a continued factor in disrupting reconciliations between John and Paul into the 70s and 1980.

SUGAR
1984
Tumblr media
Sugar is a musical with a book by Peter Stone, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill. It is based on the 1959 film Some Like It Hot and premiered on Broadway in 1972, playing 505 performances at the Majestic Theatre. It was nominated for four Tony Awards.
From April 10 through June 24, 1984,Sugar was presented at the Claridge Casino-Hotel’s Palace Showroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It starred “Broadway” Joe Namath as Joe / Josephine. Featuring Buddy Powell as Jerry / Daphne, Jerry Kurland as Spats, Phil Ford as Sir Osgood Fielding, Mimi Hines as Sweet Sue, and Julie Miller as Sugar Kane. It was directed and choreographed by Jack Bunch.
Tumblr media
Born in 1943, Joe Namath was a record-setting and award-winning professional football player. His career on the gridiron began in 1965 with the Jets and ended 1977 with the Rams. Nicknamed ‘Broadway Joe’, he also was an actor doing stage, screen, and television commercials. He hosted “The Joe Namath Show” (1969) and other television shows. Namath appeared in summer stock productions of Damn Yankees, Fiddler on the Roof, and Lil’ Abner, and finally legitimized his nickname as a cast replacement in a New York revival of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial in 1983.
"People would say to me that I was getting this role or that role because I was a football player, and I would say, 'Yeah, that's right, and it doesn't bother me a bit.’”

The Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City was built in 1930 and dubbed the “skyscraper by the sea”. In 1982, it became added casino gambling. Shortly after, it began offering Broadway-style entertainment. It is still operating as of this writing.

For one thing, this is what, in show business parlance, is called a ''tab show'' (an intermission-less, tabloid version, here lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes or less). That takes care of the trimming ''Sugar'' so sorely needed in the first place.
Here, it is perfectly paced by Jack Bunch, the director and choreographer, and perfectly placed in a cabaret, in which there is a one-drink minimum and the customers are comfortably seated at tables. This is something like dinner-theater without the dinner. In Mr. Bunch's staging, the show races by, emphasizing the racy story values, which are considerable.
Mr. Namath grows more personable and persuasive with each musical stage appearance. Personability is an indispensable quality for a mega-celebrity, who is regarded more as a persona than a performer.
While a few line readings need honing and some notes come out flat, Mr. Namath conveys a contagious good cheer and an unceasing sense that he's having a great time, just as Raquel Welch did in ''Woman of the Year'' on Broadway.
Mr. Namath also shows a flare for understated comedy, as when he reacts to himself wearing suspenders to hold up his skirt, and shows, especially crucial in this role, an air of manliness that never condescends to mincing or cheap jibes.
The Jule Styne-Bob Merrill score is best when truncated. Imagine a streamlined, sparsely designed show at relatively modest prices coming out better than a splashy David Merrick Broadway extravaganza. This ''Sugar'' is really short and sweet.

OUT OF UNIFORM: Broadway Joe Namath, who's appearing in the cross-dressing musical "Sugar" at the Claridge (running through June 24), took last night off to celebrate his 41st birthday with family and friends. The inscription on one well-wishing card read, "Aren't birthdays a drag!" Get it? Incidentally, they say the ex-Jet is selling lots of tickets. Perhaps we should start calling him Boardwalk Joe.
~ New York Daily News, June 1, 1984

Booking ''Sugar,'' with Joe Willie Namath in the starring role, was a coup for the Claridge, he said.
''It's a great move by the Claridge to bring Namath in,'' he said. ''I just wish they had brought that show to me.''
''Sugar,'' the stage version of the Marilyn Monroe-Jack Lemmon-Tony Curtis movie ''Some Like It Hot,'' opened last Wednesday after a week of previews and has been playing to full houses nightly at the Claridge's Palace Showroom. Namath in drag, singing, dancing and cavorting in wig, lipstick and high heels is delighting audiences, if not receiving gushing critical acclaim.
The former Jets quarterback, whose run here will end June 24 so he can get to his annual football instructional camp in Connecticut, said in an interview that he is here to pursue his post-football acting career and is not working for the casino in the manner of the sports figures who have become casino promotional agents.
But Wagner, the Claridge vice president, said the effect on the casino's bottom line is the same.
''Namath attracts sports-minded customers, and sports-minded people have a propensity to gamble,'' he said. ''All the things we do are to promote that main room down there.''
~ New York Times, April 23, 1984
Tumblr media
In August 1984, Namath again appeared as Joe / Josephine in new production of Sugar, this time at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. This production added Robert Morse, repeating his Tony-nominated role from the original Broadway production as well as the original Spats, Steve Condos. Osgood Fielding was played by comic Jack Carter.
The following summer, the Claridge presented Namath in Bells Are Ringing, but that’s another blog.
Tumblr media
Bringing things full circle, the original film Some Like It Hot played on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City in 1959, the year it was released.
Tumblr media
Located at 935 Boardwalk and Virginia Avenue, The Virginia Theatre was opened in 1916. It was later Atlantic City’s premiere theatre that showed roadshow features. The theatre closed at the end of 1973 when the Government purchased the block for future casino development. The theatre sat empty until it was demolished around 1980. It is now the location of the Hard Rock (formerly Taj Mahal) Casino.

20 Years After Their Debuts, Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown's Style Still Feels Revolutionary
They found their voice in fashion as much as they did in music.
It started with one hell of an iconic promo shot: Lil' Kim with legs akimbo, serving a come-hither face; squatting unapologetically in heels, a leopard Patricia Field thong bikini, and a sheer, marabou-feathered duster. Just the description of it gives one reason to pause, but actually seeing it was an event. It was a visual prelude to everything her debut album, Hard Core, would be lyrically: sensational, raunchy, and powerful all at the same time.
One week later—arguably the most pivotal seven-day stretch in women's hip-hop history—Foxy Brown released Ill Na Na, her debut album. The cover evinced her signature confidence. It gave us full-on sultry, revealing the crescendo of her perfect breasts in a black, low-cut, spaghetti-strapped négligée. It had been years since women had charted so significantly in rap music. Then, just like that, in November 1996, there were two forces at once.
Lil' Kim and Foxy changed the way women consumed and contributed to the music. Together, their debut albums have sold more than 3 million units in the U.S. alone—unprecedented numbers for ladies in hip-hop. Together, they revolutionized the subculture of hip-hop fashion: one exclusive Gucci dress, one classic Christian Dior belt, one head-to-toe Fendi ensemble at a time.
City sidewalks have long been runways for Black women's exquisite sense of style and carriage. Dressing is part of our cultural identity. Historically denied the opportunity to strut catwalks in the fashion capitals of the world, we turned the streets into a running display of our dopeness. "It's a signifier for self-worth and pride, and that transcends time, no matter when you look at it. We put a lot of intentionality into the way we dress," says Joanne Hyppolite, PhD, curator at the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
As mastermind of the Cultural Expressions exhibit, which highlights our interpretation of fashion, Hyppolite points to generational examples of Black women using our clothing, our hairstyles, and our accessories to create an outward expression of self-love that has belied the oppression we've endured. "If you're dressing, no matter what condition you're under, no matter the circumstance, you're showing how you value yourself. It says, 'I'm somebody. I'm something,'" she adds.
THEIR FASHION CHOICES PUSHED BEYOND STANDARD, ATTENTION-GETTING SEXINESS TO COMMAND POWER IN A MALE-DOMINATED GENRE, IN A MALE-DOMINATED INDUSTRY.
It's a cultural tradition inherited by Kim and Foxy, two girls from Brooklyn who both found their voices in fashion as much as they did in their music. Their styles, different even from each other, were a departure from those of their legendary predecessors—like Queen Latifah, who rocked African-print garb; MC Lyte, who represented around-the-way-girl sneakers and jeans; and Salt-N-Pepa, who made shiny spandex and leather a definitive trend of their time.
They were even more of a contrast to the baggy-jeaned outfitting of label mates and group members who juxtaposed their alpha-male masculinity against Kim and Foxy's tough-but-girly personas. As the only females in their crews, their fashion choices pushed beyond standard, attention-getting sexiness to command power in a male-dominated genre, in a male-dominated industry. Just as importantly, they made Black women visible to high-end fashion houses who weren't observant of our style hegemony until Kim and Foxy forced them to pay attention.
"People are attracted to energy. Some could have judged Kim and Foxy harshly, but the fact of the matter is they created an energy that was taking over. Everybody wanted a piece of it," Misa Hylton, the legendary stylist who created the look for Lil' Kim's jaw-dropping bikini pose and began styling Foxy Brown when she was still a teenager, says. "It was a magic that happens every so often. They came up in a time when the sound of music was changing and evolving into something new. Hip-hop culture was spreading, and fashion houses and high-end designers became interested in them. They saw them as trendsetters and they saw value in them from a marketing [perspective]."
Foxy celebrated the beauty of her mahogany skin as the self-professed "dark-skinned Christian Dior poster girl," boasted about being "dripped in Gabbana," and did a campaign for Calvin Klein, starring in billboards as big as the pride of the Black girls who saw themselves in her likeness. Kim, too, had her model moment, posing for Louis Vuitton in an ad that was canceled but memorialized instead by photographer David LaChapelle, with an image of Kim wearing nothing but a skin-tone cap and the Louis Vuitton monogram imprinted all over her body, an image that's far more famous than the original shot likely ever would have been.
In aligning themselves with names that are synonymous with wealth, opulence, and impeccable design—Versace, Gucci, Fendi, Armani, Moschino—each woman became a superstar of '90s style. "These women had a lifestyle that was introduced to the world and people bought into it. Music and fashion became something that you had to be a part of and know about," Hylton says. So as technology changed and fans and fashionistas were able to more quickly access images and videos, they were also better able to interpret what Kim and Foxy wore for themselves, editing as necessary.
It's important to honor Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown the women, even as we celebrate Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown the hip-hop artists, inadvertent feminists, and archetypal style-makers. Both are blessed with radiant self-confidence that permeates their public images, and both ooze a natural charisma that commands all-eyes-on-me attention. A woman pretty much has to possess copious quantities of both in order to strut across the stages of packed-out arenas in string bikinis and floor-length minks, neon wigs, and fishnet bodysuits. Their use of fashion was part of packaging an image, but it was also a celebration of their liberated womanhood: the ability to wear whatever, be whoever, and own it for themselves.

A Q&A With Keary Kase On Pioneering Hip Hop In Portland
Trenton, NJ born rapper Keary Kase is now pioneering hip hop from Portland, Oregon. After having been involved in a Nike ad campaign that featured him on Billboards across the US, Keary’s singles began to top the radio charts. He began to work with artists like The Wutang Clan and producers Bosko and Non-Stop Da Hitman. Most recently, he partnered with Adidas designers in Portland to develop ‘Reder’ – an athletic apparel brand with focus on CBD delivery systems for athletes who are recovering from injuries.
We had the chance to sit down with Keary Kase to talk about Portland’s thriving hip hop scene, his Nike campaign, and what fans and followers can expect in 2020.
Tell us a little bit about the hip hop scene in Portland. We’d love to know more!
Portland hip hop has so many facets, I’m not sure where to begin. We do have a solid foundation of originals, like Mic Crenshaw, Cool Nutz, Mellenium (Kenny Mack), Maniac Lok, Bosko, Vursatyl, X-Kid, DJ Wicked, Pete Miser and myself, who are still active.
Having strong artists, who have made careers in Hip Hop, as role models and idols allows the kids to aspire to become musical artists. Without these examples, the endless call to normalcy and job security (which we all now know is B/S) by pretty much EVERYBODY, would lead these young Ore-guns to self doubt and failure.
Mike Capes, Swiggle Mandela, Drae Steve’s, JR Patton and Keith Canvas are a few Portland artists to check out.
Right now, a lot of artists are showing support to the BLM movement using their voices to speak, rather than rap to those participating in protests, rallies and such.
How do you feel being originally from the east coast has affected your musical style?
In my embryonic years, I saw myself as an east coast rapper. I felt like, with the exception of rappers like Ice T, Too Short, NWA and The DOC, west coast rappers were mostly basic compared to east coast rappers. They had KRS, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick (my favorite golden era rapper), Special ED, Kool G Rap & Polo, RAKIM!!! Plus WBLS used to play all the hot new shit off the block.
I was enamored by east coast swagger and tone. The slang and accent was natural for me because my entire family spoke with it. My ability to slip in and out of the style made me different in Portland.
In the early 90’s I started spending time in LA. I was slanging FIMO beads to tourists at Venice Beach in the daylight and going to clubs and shows at night. I met this dude named Self Jupiter at this summer festival called The African Marketplace, where I was selling jewelry and celebrating my black youth. Jupiter was a member of a rap group called Freestyle Fellowship. He gave me a tape. After I listened to it, my entire opinion of west coast hip hop was turned upside down. I witnessed west coast rappers like Volume 10, WC, Divine Styler, Cypress Hill and E40 change the game. I became influenced by them and my style was set free. I became open to all influences, no matter if they came from the east, west, northwest, midwest or south.
Tell us more about the Nike ad campaign you were featured in. How did that come about?
One day I was leaving my boy Tommy Hestmark’s studio in downtown Portland. I was walking down the street with my back straight and my chest and chin up, as all men and women should. This guy approached me and said “excuse me, can I talk to you?” I looked at him sideways and he says “no, no. It’s just…. Your face is CRAZY!” I squinted as if to say “do you hear yourself fool?” He pulls out a card and explains that he owned a modeling agency and he thought my look was money. He asked me to call to schedule a test shoot. I called and scheduled the shoot. When I went there, he asked me if I was wearing boxers. I confirmed, then he asked me if I would take some test shots in my boxers. I’m thinking this dude is either going to proposition me for sex or he wants to see if I can be the next face of Calvin Klein. I gambled on Calvin Klein and agreed to take the pics. We walked into a hall and he said “you can get undressed here,” then walked away. So there I stood baring all that my boxers would not cover, with my clothes in a small pile on the floor. I heard footsteps, then an attractive woman appears holding a camera. It was his wife. She told me where to stand , took a couple quick pics and said “Keary, you’re a machine,” then allowed me to get dressed and walked me out.
A few weeks later they called me back and said a photographer knew of me and wanted to do a martial arts shoot. There was no pay, but the photographer was well known and really good. I had no portfolio, and no published work so this was an opportunity to do TFP to add to my comp card.
The photographer, Marcus Swanson, wanted me to do a flying sidekick, which is a classic taekwondo photo kick. When I got there, there was nowhere to get a running start so I improvised and pulled it off. While I was there, a Nike scout was lurking. As I was leaving, Marcus’ assistant, Amber Geiger, mentioned a potential shoot for Nike and asked if they could do a quick polaroid. Snap snap and I was out. A few months passed by before I got a call back from my agent about the shoot. In those few months, I became a black belt, won a gold medal at the the regional national qualification tournament in the black belt dividion, then a silver medal at the US National Championship, and was leaving in a few days to go whoop everybody’s ass at the invitational US Team Trials. It didn’t play out that way but I believe being so active in the few months between the martial arts test shoot and the paid shoot is what influenced their decision to go with me for the ad campaign. We agreed on a date and time, after my return, for the shoot.
When I got back, we did the shoot. I thought it was going to be light work but it was brutal. Modeling is hardcore. I remember seeing myself on a billboard for the first time. It felt like a distant relative to masturbation. I also remember it taking forever to get my money. Agencies can be gangster. I had to make some very firm promises before I got the check. After that, our relationship became square.
You have worked with several platinum artists and producers. Do you have any memorable stories about your experiences that you’d like to share?
Hmm. I don’t like to deride or D-RIDE anyone, but there was an interesting encounter with a Wu-Tang Clan member named Cappadonna. Cappadonna, Killa Priest and a small crew they were touring with were staying at my house when they stopped through Portland. My roommate, MyG,  was helping them do some business in Portland while they killed time before their next tour date. At the time, we had a lil 5 bedroom spread with 2 recording studios in it, so we let their whole crew crash at the spot. The house was already like a revolving door for whoever was on tour in the NW. Artists could come through while in town and collab, get local pub through us and be blessed with some Oregon grown greeneries for the road.
So this was the first time we met (Cappadonna & I). I was taking acting classes at the time so I was gone when they pulled up. When I got home after class, Cappadonna was in the booth. I walked in the room and he started talking wild like “aye yo break that nigga watch!…stab that nigga!” I’m standing in a room full of dudes, with New York energy, that I don’t know, so I assumed he was talking about me. I dip out to my room and get a screwdriver just so I have something in my hand incase things go left. A few minutes pass, then MyG tells Cappadonna to move on to the next part. At this moment I realize he’s in character and not talking about me at all. Killah Priest enters the room. We introduce ourselves and dap up. He asks me what I do and I tell him that I’m in acting school. When Cap comes out, KP says “this is Kase, he’s an actor.” They gave each other a look that, to me , expressed what he spoke as “this is Kase, he’s a fake nigga.”
Granted, I’ve been a skater since day 1, so I understand that some black people (especially at the time) associate being a black skater with being less black or more white. With that in mind, I let what he said breeze by.
After we blessed up, we got to the business. Bosko had let me hold a beat that I wrote a sticky verse to; Cappa liked it so I let him put a hook on it. Me and KP did a DOPE song on a track that this dude named Smoke produced. It sounded like some official Wu-affiliate shit. MyG lost the session so none of that material was ever released.
The next day the energy still felt suspect. Like they thought I was a suburban negro, lol. I took them to the block, which is now gentrified, but was still hood at the time. Cappa called my whip a 666. It was the same Denali XL with the same 26” Trump Spinners that was in the video for the song he was promoting at the time, but mine was cleaner. It seemed like he felt a way about it. We went to my mom’s restaurant, where Cappa requested a Psalms verse from my mother. She said “how about a Revelation,” and laced all of us.
I dropped them at the barber shop to get faded and bladed. When they came out, the energy was different. Cappadonna got in and said “you know your hood and your hood knows you. He said you put your moms in that restaurant, didn’t you?” I just looked at him and put my hand out. We dapped up and the respect, which was first being given by me and received by him, suddenly felt mutual.
Cappadonna is a wise dude and a beast MC. I asked him questions related to his lyrics. He explained to me what “God Degree” and “7:30” meant and told me the story of the origin of his name. You might be able to detect that I’m most definitely still a Wu-Tang fan, although I liked his earlier work. KP knows what I mean by that.
Tell us about your involvement with the CBD industry and your views on how it can be a therapeutic tool for people?
CBD is my go-to treatment for a number of conditions. If I am anxious, I use a non-psychoactive tincture. This gives me a general sense of well-being, without making me feel altered or high. I feel like myself on a good day. If I need to restful sleep, I employ a cannabinoid rich CBD blend that allows me to drift off into REM without jumping up 100 times to make sure the garage door is closed (or whatever). Using CBD is like taking premium vitamins.
In 2019, I started a company called Nina Botanica with a material designer who works for Adidas in Portland. I began researching how to use compression technology as a CBD delivery system for athletic injury rehabilitation. There are some products on the market that offer a similar product, but none that fully address the issues of muscle strains, tears and associated pain that can knock an athlete off of their game. What sets us apart is, our CBD compression system has a lifetime guarantee. You can use it until you’re tired of using it.
We also designed a pod based delivery system, called the NINA , with Shenzen based technology company Smoore. The smart hexagonal pod + cartridge system uses inductive charging in place of the industry standard USB to power up.
Due to COVID-19 and our current bout with systemic racism, the techy products will be in preliminary production until mid-late 2021.
Tell us about your latest project “Craze”. Who is involved and what inspired it?
I was a week back on after being off music for years. Just getting my lungs back, not planning on dropping anything yet; just warming up. An artist named Uneek, who had been my mentee for several years, reached out. He was talking about how he blew all of his savings on medical expenses for his seed and how William, Lil Willi and Big Bill were all coming for him at once. He had just got robbed in Atlanta, so he was shy about who he could trust in Portland.
Uneek asked me to help him to rebrand himself and act as a manager, as I did in the beginning of his career. Since he had just found the strength to come out about his sexual identity, he wanted to look to the LBGTQ community for support. Since that was outside of my sphere of influence, I decided to help him generate some traffic in his home studio, offering tracking and mixing as an engineer. I told him we could put out a mixtape to re-introduce him to his followers and the rest of the world. I got 15 tracks from  producers, Sixteen and J Doe. I wanted to see how serious he was about his career so I told him to put hooks on  all 15. He would send me a rough lyric or melody, then I would write or rewrite the lyrics then massage the melody and coach him on how to execute it.  After he did it, I would chop it and arrange it in a Logic, while I was on the road.
Once the mixtape concepts were in the bag, I told him we needed a real record to kick it off. There was a lot of material in his catalog, but nothing that sounded like a hit single to me.
He got a track from this lil dude named 64 and put a hook on it that had us laughing. He was like “yeah this track sound like something Da Baby would get on.” It wasn’t my style, really, but I kept getting drawn into the drums. I let the first line go off the top then it seemed like the rest of the lyrics were just there. We called it “She A Thot.” It dropped on all platforms back in April of this year.
Craze, the follow up single, manifested itself off of the vibe we were on after “She A Thot” dropped. 64 had sent us a 3 pack of beats so it had some of the same feel as the others, however, the “Craze” beat was much more elegant than the other two.It was like the bigger, sexier, more mature and pondering sister of the “She A Thot” beat.
When I started writing, I felt the beat asking me to confess. It was saying “tell your truth, Kase.” The melody in my head was so balanced that I just let it drive through the first verse. I remembered, as a young man, being so caught up in hustling that I lost my compassion for people. I reflected on how I had spent the last decade, since my first daughter was born, re-approaching life with more compassion.
Whatever you have done in your past does not define you. But sometimes it’s good to talk about it. Black  people have traditionally been afraid of counseling or therapy. Mostly because of our trust issues with the people providing those services. I strongly suggest talking to someone about the things that trouble you. My uncle Jeff calls it “dumping.”
Music is my therapy. Dumping is my new craze.
What artists are you listening to right now and why?
I like listening to new music. I’m listening to Lil Durk, Pop Smoke, Amine, Jack Harlow, etc. But that’s like research for me. I like to see and hear what the big dogs are investing in. But right now, I’m developing a K-Pop artist, so I’m listening Big Hit Entertainment’s people. I’m about to go over there and liberate some musical slaves. (*artists)
But I still listen to Sade.
What’s next for you in 2020? What can fans look forward to?
I’m dropping a mixtape later this month. I may be doing a record + video with Compton artist, AD in the next few weeks. We’re still working out the details, but he’s doing real good right now.
Other than that, I’m developing a young K-Pop idol named Kiari. That genre is making big waves. I’m also looking at television as a next play. I have a pocket ace in the Chinese market that I’m keeping tucked. Oh I’m doing business with China.  Sorry Chump…I mean, Sorry Trump. No, wait, I had it right the first time.

∞∞ I want two please ✌🏼💙
Thank you so much 💛
Joy - Bastille
Oh joy, when you call me I was giving up, oh, I was giving in Joy, set my mind free I was giving up, oh, I was giving in
This song just always makes me happy when I listen to it and the chorus makes me miss the times when people actually texted me to ask about my day and things like that. Also the giddiness you feel when someone you have a crush on texts you? It’s a nice feeling I think, I remember it faintly, and this song makes me feel a bit giddy too sometimes, especially when I’m singing along.
(Translation: I want you to know that I’m there for you I want you to know that I really love you It doesn’t matter what happens Although everything’s not easy I want you to know that I’m there for you)
It’s a song written by one of my favorite Dutch artists for his son, Lío, and the lyrics never fail to put me in a strange mood. On one hand I find it very cute and it’s a very nice song, and I think that it’s quite emotional. Parental love is so important and Lío turned one like a week ago? so this song was mostly written before he was born, which makes the entire concept just so much nicer. I mean, loving someone you’ve never met and knowing that you will love that tiny human no matter what? it’s too much for my weak heart. On the other side I listen to this song a lot to make up for the love that I feel is missing in my own life in a way, so I guess that’s a bit less positive. Nevertheless I am in love with this song and its lyrics, and I really really hope I translated it right haha
put a ∞ in my ask box and i’ll shuffle my music player and give you my favorite lyric from the song that comes up

My Playlist 2.0
A/N: You guys seemed to like my first playlist, so I decided on making a second one. I also want to make it because I just like doing so, it’s fun lol. (I will also give a little feedback to the songs lol)
My Playlist 1.0
California Dreamin’ - The Mamas and Papas - Just sing along with this song, it’s so fucking easy. My mother showed this song to me and ever since then we just both sing so loudly to this in the car.
banana pancakes - Jack Johnson - It’s cute, come on.
The Night We Met - Lord Huron - am I really the only one who isn’t over 13 reasons why?
Survival - Muse - I was so hyped when I found out that they would be making the olympic song in England that year. Awesome.
If I Get High - Nothing But Thieves - Ya’ll I love my bois nbt, his voice is just so nice and the songs overall are just great. After Muse, this is my favorite band for sure.
Het Dorp - Wim Sonneveld - lol, sorry I’m doing this to you guys since it’s dutch and probably not really your style of music, but it’s my childhood music, so this song hits me very deep every time.
Let It Be - The Beatles - It’s just so beautiful, not only the sound but also the lyrics.
Govinda -  Kula Shaker - I’ve known this song for so long and just recently found out that the band are all white, I was honestly so shook.
The Chain - Fleetwood Mac - I loved Guardians Of The Galaxy so much wtf, and the music was also so lit omg I want to watch it again.
The Girl With X-Ray Eyes - Noel Gallagher - To all you oasis fans ayyy
Bad - U2 - I actually found this song recently and couldn’t stop listening to it. Of course I’ve known U2 for a while now, but this song I’ve apparently missed.
Wall of Glass - Liam Gallagher - Sad they went their own ways, but also good since they make amazing songs as individuals
The Handler - Muse - I like muse, okay, get over it.
One More Night - End Of The World - I just love this song, sounds cute and all
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N’ Roses - wtf, why didn’t I add this one in the first playlist? This song is fkn lit.
Krantenwijk - Lil Kleine - This is so fucking popular in the Netherlands jfc, love it tho.
Amar Pelos Dois - Salvador Sobral - So my mom and I were so fucking hyped when he won, like this guy deserves that eurovision onehunderdfuckingprocent. He is so cute too wtf. And yes, I can’t understand it lol
City Of Blinding Lights - U2 - yo, besides Muse and nbt, this band gives me the fucking chills. I’ve known them from the moment I first ever heard music probably, since my father is a huge U2 fan and plays it endlessly in the house.

Lil Dicky - Earth (Lyrics)
