Watching It: Chapter 2 a Second Time

It was honestly very enlightening for me and I recommend everyone see it again to see what you pick up. This is mostly about Reddie content ~this is a long ass post~

SPOILERS AHEAD

The Reddie Dynamic:

In the first movie, they really show the affection that the two characters have towards each other by keeping them in close proximity and or they are touching. In all but three scenes of the first movie, Richie and Eddie are near each other. Even when the are looking up at Bowers in that weird hole, Eddie is literally leaning on Richie. At the jump at the quarry they are separated but interacting. I was sad they weren’t so close to one another in the second movie but I think it’s because of their repression of feelings. They jump back to the teasing but getting back to physical part of their relationship takes time. They arm wrestle and then there is no physical touching until they go back into the Neibolt house.

The Lack of Pennywise in the Background:

I loved this part of the first one and scoured the background of every scene desperately trying to see if It was in the background in Chapter 2. Like I’m paintings or other scenes. One person pointed out the painting in Beverly’s house but I didn’t see It in it. I thought that since they were back in Derry, Pennywise would be spying on them. I was like “oh it’s gotta be in the background” when Mike brings Bill to the library, but no. If anyone saw Pennywise in the background please let me know!

The Restraunt Scene:

I listened to the Reddie conversation in the background of the Bill and Bev scene and like low key you can see Richie listening and being supportive but also realistic about how it’s all in Eddie’s head. Richie has never seen him and still never sees him the way Eddie sees himself: weak

The Hammock™️ Scene:

THIS SCENE IS NOT LONG ENOUGH!!! I pray there is more in the director’s cut! Hearing “I fucked your mom” in the background was so good and sweet it made me wonder... is there another time they say that verbatum? Is Eddie saying “I fucked your mom” a call back to this scene??? Thoughts on this anyone??? Richie holding Eddie’s leg still has me 🥰

The Street Fighter Scene:

Was extremely telling the second time around.

Finn knew he was playing a gay character because during the game he completely looks at the other guys lips! It’s a very sweet moment. As another post on tumblr said, Richie was vulnerable and even felt safe with this boy. He thought the feelings were reciprocated. I think they were but Bower’s cousin was too afraid of his own feelings to accept it. Although some say Richie running away and not having a quip was uncharacteristic of him, I think he was stunned, shamed, and torn apart by what unfolded. It was as if someone stabbed him with a knife where it hurt most. He could barely comprehend it and couldn’t even deny it because he is gay and Bowers yelling “faggot” cut so deep. Also chronologically this was after the fight between Bill and Richie in the first movie before Bill goes to the archade to get Richie. In that scene Richie is playing street fighter alone which makes it really sad when you think about how after the f*ggot comment he had to play it alone :(

The Montage during Stanley’s Speech:

Richie putting his hand on Eddie’s back is adorable and Eddie does in fact pull him into the photo booth and they have a cute second together 🥺 I thought so the first time around but I confirmed the second time.

When Eddie said “please don’t be mad, Bill”:

Richie goes to Eddie to check on him before he is attacked by the Stanley spider head not after!!!! They don’t talk about it until the “you’re braver than you think” scene. Also the “don’t be mad, Bill” was way more heartbreaking because I rewatched the first movie and Pennywise says it as Georgie to Bill. In the book Eddie looks up to Bill. They all do since he’s the leader but idk that got me the second time around.

The doors scene:

It was Betty ripsom again!! Because she says, “where’s my shoe?” In the first movie we see her top half and then that scene we see her bottom. The closet though and her being from the waist down is again a call back to the AIDS comment Eddie makes in the first movie and both of their internalized homophobia is brought to the fore front here. Also after they slam the door Eddie yells “you told me to trust you!!!!” It’s faint but hilarious.Also Richie touching Eddies arm had me smiling like an idiot 😌

The possible kiss scene:

Although many believe the possible kiss scene is when Eddie saves Richie from the deadlights I fully believe it’s way after that. Eddie gets stabbed, rolls down that cave part, they discuss how to defeat it, Bill helps Richie movie Eddie while Ben mike and bev are being chased by it. Then Eddie says “I fucked your mom” then they go back to the other losers. It stays with that scene for a long time. Which is uncharacteristic of the whole sequence before this part. They jump back and forth between bill, Ben and Bev, and Richie and Eddie. It reminded me of the long scene in Neibolt in the first. Where we never cut to outside and come to find out later they deleted a cute scene with Beverly/Ben and Mike/Stan. When they return to Richie after the losers are beating Pennywise up, he leaves Eddie so suddenly and then rips off Pennywise’s fucking arm. The scene is right before that. They kiss and then Eddie dies clutching on to richies jacket. Richie then leaves. Which then leads to my next point-

Eddie did not die alone:

When Richie is fuming and leaves Eddie he looks like he passed away. He is clutching Richies jacket. I am hoping this is touched on in the directors cut bc although it has a dramatic effect, I hate HATE the idea that he died alone. I just don’t see how that motivates the story at all.

THAT SCENE:

I didn’t notice anything different in that scene. I just felt heartbroken once again and astounded by Bill Hader’s acting.

Other weird things I noticed the second time around:

• When It is the Paul Bunyan statue before he attacks Richie he says “Want a kiss, Richie?” Which I found both funny and fucked up.

•they cut to Richie yelling you’re a clown and I died because eddies hand is over richies!!?????

Like ya they are keeping the jacket in place but 🥺🥺🥺🥺

•all the blood goes up. Why is that? Is it because everything floats? I don’t know why but like If anyone knows lemme know

•the fact that they left Eddie there still does a number on me. I hate it

•the place where R+E is carved on the kissing bridge is shown in the first movie but the spot is blank. I think that was purposeful to not only show the Bridge but give us a timeline and like show us where it was going to be if that makes sense???

•although not at all compliant to the book, I still think Eddie should have lived and during the voiceover when Stanley says “be proud” it should have been both of them at the bridge or getting off the plan in LA together.

•the director’s attention to detail is astounding. All the things he did were INTENTIONAL!! Don’t let anyone deny it. He told James to do the little hand gesture. So the minute details we see and catch are purposeful and justify the true love that Richie and Eddie have.

I write a lot of stuff. i honestly didn’t think i’d find a friendship like ash because i had had so many bad experiences with friendships and i felt like i genuinely couldn’t connect with someone on that level. like honestly ash is one of the first people that i’ve felt like understands me 100% and, even though i’m still working on opening myself up to that sort of relationship and being able to really rely on my friends, they’re so patient and kind and never give up on getting me to talk to them. 

i really think ash is one of the best people in the entire world and i wouldn’t have been able to get through a lot of stuff without them. even if we didn’t explicitly talk about it, just knowing that someone was there and willing to listen meant so much to me. and the reason i think anyone can find a friendship like this is that i literally wasn’t expecting it at all. like i wasn’t searching for someone like this and it just sort of happened and we clicked and i know there’s someone out there like this for everyone.

Yes, take my hand and join me in what will probably be an incoherent ramble about something that is most likely not true, my love.

OKAY, SO:

I’m sure we all remember those #iconic Creepy Clowns™, but as a refresher- Creepy Clown sightings are actually something that have been like, an urban legend phenomenon for Y E A R S. Like, a very long time. I used to do a lot of reading on the subject seeing as I was that kid™, but now you just get a million and one results from 2016 and I’ve had too much wine to wanna bother fighting through that. But anyway, this has always been a thing. Just, like, sometimes you’d see a creepy clown in the dead of night, but the clown doesn’t fucking do anything and you move on with your life. I actually saw one in like, 4th or 5th grade? Didn’t die, it wasn’t a huge deal. But anyway, in 2016 things just SPIRALED THE FUCK OUT OF CONTROL. Personally, I maintain what happened was that your average urban legend phenomenon was happening but since social media is so prevalent now a lot of creeps got inspired and the whole thing got blown up because of that…but that’s not the theory we’re focusing on in this post, so whatever. 

Now, as I’m sure you’ll also remember, there were HUNDREDS of conspiracy theories swirling around the whole clown crisis- everything from demonic possession, to a ‘clown purge’, to people thinking Hillary Clinton had hired the clowns to freak out America even more so she could get fear votes. I’m not shitting you, those were all things I heard daily. But another, tamer, theory was: this was all a mass promotional stunt for the IT reboot. 

The IT reboot was highly anticipated and very debated- fans of the work were well aware that they had been trying to get this movie made for years but kept running into issues. When they finally started filming, they shot from June to September in 2016. The clown sightings ran from August to October 2016. This theory made sense- it’s not hard to believe that a studio would pull something like that, thinking it’d be a fun publicity stunt but then not really wanting to take credit once it got out of hand. That’s literally happened before, like the Montauk Monster and that Dear Charlie ghost thing.  Anyway, a lot of people thought this couldn’t possibly be a coincidence- like, I’ve even seen the actors asked about it in interviews (like they’re on the marketing team??), but none of them had much to comment. This will be the theory we focus on…just with a bit of a twist. 

Now, if your reading this and you’ve only seen part one of the 2017 movie and don’t know much about the book or miniseries 1) you’re a valid fan, I love you bitch, and 2) I’m sorry, but spoilers are coming immediately and every time I try to put one of those ‘read more’ cut offs my screen glitches and I loose all my writing bc someone out there is against me. So read at your own risk. 

Okay, as part of the ‘adult’ storyline, they go back into It’s lair in Derry and find out that It has laid eggs and set to work destroying them. There’s a whole fuck lot going on with this plotline, like Eddie and the Turtle™ are dead and Bev’s barely doing shit and Ben’s smashing babies while Bill’s trying to get inside the monster and Richie mourns his bf, it’s all a Mess okay, but the point is: eggs. 

Now, the notion that not all of the spawn were destroyed is actually…not new at all and somewhat debatably relevant in some of King’s other novels, but stick with me here. As far as the Losers know, they killed everything. The scars on their hands go away. It’s all very symbolic and they forget everything, whatever. 

But.

The 2017 reboot wasn’t exactly…that close to the book. Like, they kept enough in there, and they had a bunch of really small things that were Fun Little Call Backs For Book Fans (all the turtle stuff, Bev throwing that rock in slow motion with awesome precision, Pennywise taunting Richie with that decaying doll, stuff like that, you know?). But so it’s not completely out of left field to assume that Chapter Two would be very different as well? It’s not crazy to assume that the movie would end with like, a dramatic ass lingering shot of a few hatching eggs…Or even, say, a subplot that sounds like ‘the eggs hatched around the same time It woke back up out of hibernation and now there’s crazy attacks all over the place instead of Derry, but maybe if we kill the Main Beast that’ll kill them all’ (like a hive mind. you know what I mean.).

It’s not crazy to assume that. My wine glass and Shitty Writer Imagination That Never Lets Me Rest And Makes Me Over Analyze Works Of Fiction have 100% assured me of that. 

So, remember that theory that the clown sightings were just a fun promotional stunt that got out of hand…? What if- it was a promotional stunt, and setting the scene for the sequel (that still got out of hand bc humans are garbage people actually got hurt)

I don’t think anybody getting hurt was ever in the intention, but making headlines because Creepy Clowns are lurking outside schools, in cemeteries, seen trying to lure people into the woods, going out of their way to scare people and be seen as threats even if they don’t actually do anything wrong?? I can absolutely buy that as a promotion stunt…and I can absolutely see, oh, I don’t know, maybe the movie including some recycled Actual News Clips covering the events, taking advantage of all the crazy videos people posted online, stuff like that. Like, in the book and miniseries and 2017 part one, no one outside of Derry knows shit about what’s going on…but you can’t really justify something like that flying under the radar in the age of social media. You can’t. Kids would start turning up dead left and right and you’d sign onto tumblr and see a fucking ‘since the media doesn’t care enough and no one’s talking about this, let me tell you what’s going on in my town’ type post. You’d absolutely hear about it. There’d be twitter campaigns and all types of shit, there’s just no way around it. That Creepy Clown Crisis went viral for a reason. 

But Molly, you say, It didn’t always appear just as a clown! People weren’t harassed by anything other than the clowns in 2016! 

Well, my love, let me point something out to you- It is millions of years old. It’s got shapeshifting and fear manipulation down pat. Could you possibly hold new born babies to that standard? No. Do we know for a fact that It literally prays on children and likes to take the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown simply because it’s easier? Yes. 

People weren’t that afraid of the clowns when the sightings first started. But then more and more kept popping up, and do you know what we had on our hands? Mass hysteria. Mass hysteria sounds like a perfect way for a bunch of inexperienced little hive mind monsters to get the hang of the hunting with fear thing. 

Not to mention Georgie died in September/October…which means It probably usually wakes up out of hibernation around then…I’m just s a y i n g. And the sightings mysteriously stopped around November…a good timeline for the Loser’s to have killed It and thus stopped the clown crisis…I’m just s a y i n g.

Like, can I definitely prove that the studio was behind that mess as a means to set the stage for the sequel while getting some fun promotion out of it? No, I can’t, and honestly I doubt it’s true, this was just a fun thought that came to me lol. But honestly…it’s so easy to see how well a type of plotline like that would work with the film, so at the very least, if they don’t take advantage of the Clown Crisis…I will severely Judge Them, because like, it’s all right there. It’s writing itself. Damn.

Friday my friend messaged me about a very impromptu Renaissance Festival trip  okay so we planned the day a few weeks back but I forgot because I’ve been hella stressed lately

so I went to her house and stayed the night(and I didn’t bring my chromebook so no tumblr for mee) and we went yesterday(all. day. hell yiss) and LET ME TELL YOU; YESTERDAY WAS BOTH AMAZINGLY FUN AND UTTER SHIT. (details below for those of you that are curious how a day can be SO GOOD yet SO AWFUL)

Woke up, couldn’t wear my costume because I found out unless I WANT my boobs and bra on display to the world, I need a shirt under that dress. Cool. Fine. I’ll make do in my dark grey alien shirt and dark grey(they used to be black) jeans, red jingle scarf, and knee-high pirate looking boots; no prob, it’s fall, it’ll be chilly anyways, I’m not bothered at all cause the costume was kinda thrown together anyways.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I’m an idiot. I live in the Midwest. Midwest weather doesn’t give a shit WHAT season it is, it does what it fuckin’ wants to and if it wants to say it’s not Fall, then IT AIN’T FALL.

(it was pretty great at first; I got sand blasted(casted?) beads for my future shaman/druid costume I’m making, replaced my missing triquetra necklace, got a cool mug, got a henna tattoo of a triquetra bc my irish heritage so I’m fond of the triquetra as you can tell, got a cool wooden fan, got elf ears, had a pretty fantastic day as the temperature slowly rose. cue the uh-oh.)

Around.. 2pm? After waiting in a line for my elf ears I’ve been trying to get for y e a r s for at least an hour (we were DETERMINED AS SHIT okay), my head hurts and I feel like throwing up. No biggie. I’ve felt worse and done more, right?  I get my elf ears, get them spirit-gum’ed to my ears, and we’re done there so we decide to take a lil break over in the Enchanted Forest because it’s fun watching the Fae actors having fun doing their job, yanno? (also it was very close by and I just love the area so much) So we sit in the seating in front of the makeshift stage down there to rest and let my headache ease a bit and my stomach calm. ... unknowingly there was a Fairytales and Haybales show starting approximately 5 minutes after we sat down, and my friend’s sister asked if I wanted to move (bc holy shit I never knew a troll human could be so loud) but mama didn’t raise no quitter and plus I’ve never actually seen one of their shows in all my Ren Fest going years so I stayed put.

It was pretty fun, some parts here and there made me forget about my headache momentarily.  But when it ended, the pounding in my skull grew three sizes that day and HOLY SHIT I WANTED TO DIE.  So we moved further back into the ‘Enchanted Forest’ and she went and got me water and we stayed there for... 4? hours (I kept telling her she could leave if she wanted bc I wasn’t moving anytime soon and if anything happened; one of my Dad’s friends works at the booth down the way that you could see from where we were and he could see us from where he was so it was fine, but she didn’t mind, she wanted to sit and read anyways) so I laid on one of the benches, drinking water, head pounding, almost vomiting, for four hours. occasionally eyes closed (at one point someone was singing faintly and I had the heels of my palms pressed against my eyes and I just said to my friend’s sister “I don’t know who’s singing, but their voice sounds really pretty” and I thought the singer was far away since it was quiet but I guess not? because she turned to the person whom was just out of ear shot of me saying that quietly and said “My sister just complimented your singing; she said it sounds pretty” and the lady said thank you and was really happy with the compliment and I think it made her day? so that was nice at least. (my friends’ sister, my friend, and I all call each other sisters bc we may as well be) about 4 hours later my headache reduced to a dull quiet pain (after TWO extra strength tylenols) and my stomach settled so we wandered a bit more and bought some more things and it was a great day again like it was before the headache came; then we watched the fire dancers and then the Soul Fire dancers(two separate groups, latter one does not work with fire contrary to their name) at the end outside of the gates and started towards home in the car (about an hour long drive)

BUT WAIT; MY DAY GETS WORSE AGAIN FROM HERE

so we get to a city in between this one and ours and stop at a Dairy Queen bc fuck yeah, blizzards, and we’re eating and decide to get back on the road cause we’re all tired and achey from along Faire day and get in the car and her Dad starts backing up as these people going to dance were in their big Dodge truck were backing up and her dad /stops/ the car. Doesn’t shift and start driving forward; just... stops. So the dodge backs sort of slowly into our caravan and then drives forward when the kid realizes and then they both get out and assess the damage and her mom is freaking out like “My van!! not again!!” and her dad’s like “I NEED to call the insurance company NOW! give me ALL of your information!!” to this guy that’s like, 16 going on 17.  The damage? the TINEST of dents in the back side of the van. Like, literally, you can fix it with a hammer. Or if you’re my dad(cause he’s weird), you can fix it with a punch. Like, I get you still gotta make the calls and such but stop freaking out about the ‘damage’? It’s just a dent. It’s not gonna break the van. Chill. And among their freaking out, my headache returns. Lovely. So my friend, her boyfriend, and I all get out of the car and hang at the table outside of DQ talking about whatever and also how all three of us agree that they’re all overreacting at a tiny little dent (because seriously, the kid was hardly going a mile an hour when backing up) and we all just wanted to go home bc we were tired and achey and in pain and /freezing/

then I came home, took allergy meds (like I always do after ren faire because hay triggers my hay fever and there’s hay EVERYWHERE at ren fest), and went tf to sleep. That was my weekend.
