i saw the post from @/fulltacs which provided a couple screenshots of the discord server where jordi had been talking shit about other creators, which i hadn't seen up until now. it's super immature and childish to me, honestly. i didn't realise how many of my mutuals were involved in this either, and to say i'm disappointed in them is an understatement. 😶

if i was aware of this before, i wouldn't have stayed friends with any of them. it's childish and immature. i'm not going to stay friends with people like that, who harass creators and have an entire discord server dedicated to talking shit about others. i'm not interested in being dragged into a drama that doesn't involve me, just because i'm friends with someone (who is in the wrong), and especially after seeing the screenshots between jordi and her friends.

Birds of Prey #13 ends the "second arc" of the series aka the Birds finding out who was targeting Babs. Was it a rewarding finish? What about the Cass and Spirit World?

Well, here are my thoughts on the issue.

So I'm just gonna start off with the negative stuff I have to say about the issue. #1 being I was a bit disappointed at the entire resolution of it all. It is not so much how the Birds got free from the world hoping, but more about how the arc's villain, Maia was dealt with.

She just leaves and-- I guess she goes back into the portal? I mean that's what the characters say she did but it's never really implied on the pages.

In that regard, I felt a little meh on there being no real resolution. The Birds are free and all, but Maia isn't really beaten. She could still target Babs or do something else to make the Birds' lives hard.

#2 is a nitpick but Xanthe and Constantine just don't interact with Cass at all. I get it, given she wasn't with them until after getting Cela out. And man the comic got crowded. But zero interaction left me 😞. Not even Xanthe seeing Barda which I kind of wanted to see.

This is kind of a "hope" with the new Cass series is that well if this series does do well, I kind of want to see Cass interact with these characters (and new ones).

Like how is it we've seen her meet Richard Dragon? Or seeing Bronze Tiger again in Cass's life?

We're just getting Oynx and Grace in the next arc. Both have some strong ties to Cass that I'm REALLY curious where writer Kelly Thompson goes (sides the Barda stuff).

I'm rambling so back to the issue itself.

The final nitpick is a real nitpick. Cass was just called Cass at the intro. While Babs got the Batgirl/Oracle combo bit.

Come on DC… we've got two Batgirls in this issue. Just throw us a little bone here.

So I'm done focusing on the negatives so let's talk the positives now: the Cass and Cass/Cela portions are probably the strongest bits of the entire issue.

Like, the way Cass figures out how to end the loop and get Maia to open a portal and them to escape was quite genius. She a smart small bat.

Using the Spirit World proxy to "summon" her dead sisters was a nice touch to freak Maia the heck out. It also is a nice way to touch on last issue's cliffhanger with what Xanthe was feeling.

Same goes for all the Cass/Cela interaction. Like, Cass being Cass always is an open heart to anyone, and Cela has that and other things that Cass can relate too.

Again their interaction was the highlight of the issue as you could feel Cela's hope in seeing her fallen sisters and wanting to stay in "Spirit World". Or that she left Cass, and left on the downer note with her.

In all honesty, I kind of hope we see Cela again and she isn't lost like Christine or Harper in lost female "friends" that Cass strikes up with and it's completely ignored by others.

There is potential here with Cela in that she could try and find the real Spirit World, and there's an adventure with Xanthe to be ringed in with.

Besides the stuff involving Shiva and Spirit World too.

But that's more to the point I said prior. Just see more of these connections.

This was still a fun issue with the problems. There was still more good I had than the bad. But there was a bit more compared to prior outings.

Still, the art by Gavin Guiday and coloring by Jordie Bellaire were nice.

For Bellaire's coloring did a nice job homaging the prior coloring by Sebastian Chang (colorist on Spirit World) making the colors pop. Just felt so short in this variant. I guess it just makes me want to see that place again.

So yeah, the arc concluded but it does feel kind of rushed. I don't mind it given next we get Oynx and Grace Choi.

But there is a few things I hope Kelly gives us more stuff with like Mirai Maps.

A friend said they felt Mirai Maps felt "there" and we got nothing (other than answers to her tech). I agree we do need more on Mirai Maps more so why'd she stick around.

As for Cass? Yeah, it's obvious which character Kelly does favor most given Cass steals the show again. Though I'll admit she is kind of outshining Dinah a bit too much. But I digress we got Dinah's characterization in Kelly's side story that same week.

So, here's to the next arc and whatever we get with Dinah in Green Arrow! Just wish she had another series to read. I feel like there's one but nope just Green Arrow and Birds of Prey. A real pity.

"They hate you?" Pete said, coming up closer.

At his boss's approach, Jordie dropped Michael. Michael grimaced as the sting went up and down his face, blinking at tears coming to his eyes.

"Man, if this is about the Huers, I'm sorry, but you're all out of luck." Michael said. "Just drop me off on the road, nobody will be the wiser. I don't even--"

"Do you think I'm stupid?" Pete said. "Don't you dare lie to me."

Michael felt a flutter in his stomach, but he gulped and said,

"They won't come for me, man. Please. I ditched them a long time ago. We haven't seen each other for four years."

"Hm." Pete said. "Then you'll be relieved to know that Morgan Huer has been looking for you."

Michael groaned and turned his head away. That just made it worse.

"They want to kill me!" He said through his teeth. "Whatever you do to me, if they had their hands on me, they'd do worse. Please. You'll get nothing if I'm the bait--they'll just laugh."

Pete looked at him thoughtfully for a moment.

"So… I should just kill you then?"

"Wh--well, uh…" Michael licked his lips. Why hadn't he thought of that? His mind was muddled.

Pete smirked slightly.

"You're pretty good at lying, aren't you?" He said.

He put a hand on Michael's face and tilted it into the sliver of light between the two men's shoulders. Michael couldn't make out much of either of them, but they'd be seeing him pretty clearly. Dirty-blond hair, darkly tanned skin which now was probably a wrinkled mess of a terrified wince.

Michael couldn't answer that question; he wasn't lying, but he wasn't going to try to convince Pete of that now.

"Like I said, you can't lie to me, Michael." Pete released him.

"Don't." Michael's eyes blazed. "You'll regret it."

Jordie let go and a fist skiffed over his ribs as Michael bent down to protect his stomach. Jordie took him by the back of the head and rammed a knee into the same spot, and Michael crumpled to the metal floor, knees hitting hard. Two gasps of air.

"Pete, can you kinda hold him down for me?" Jordie said.

"I'm not your--victim!" Michael lunged toward the door, and the other guys actually moved, probably not wanting to get battered in the shins with his skull.

The door was barred, but Michael turned around fiercely, leaned back, and kicked out at Jordie's shin as he approached. Jordie shouted in pain and jumped back, hot rage flooding his face. He paused, looking around the truck. The other guys seemed to not be interested in fighting.

"Fine! I'll do it myself!" Jordie stepped back and hauled a tire off the pile, then tossed it in Michael's direction.

Michael rolled slightly, using his legs to protect his face as the tire fell onto him, and when he lowered them, Jordie was there. He sat down on the tire and Michael's legs strained to stay upright, trying to keep structure so he didn't break anything.

"You asked for it." Jordie said.

"That's bullshit!" Michael hissed.

Slap. It knocked Michael's head sideways again.

Michael cringed, holding his breath as his arms reflexively tugged at the zip tie bruising into his skin.

Slap. Slap.

Jordie's hand came across Michael's helpless face over and over.

And then he started punching. For a moment it actually hurt less, and then the ache began compounding, and Michael grunted and struggled, face screwed up defensively to protect his eyes and nose.

Michael gasped. The door was right here. He just needed to get up. He got one of his legs out from under the tire as Jordie jumped off of him, kicking him in the rib.

"Ugh…" Michael maneuvered himself toward the corner with his un-trapped leg, pushing at the tire with his knee so he could stand.

"You're gonna kill him," Someone observed.

"I'm not killing him." Jordie said, kicking him in the rib.

A shooting pain went up from the spot he kept striking. A rib, if it broke bad enough, could puncture a lung and kill him.

"Wait listen--" Michael hissed.

Jordie kicked off the tire and grabbed Michael by the ponytail, yanking him, dragging him over onto his chest on the cold metal floor faster than his knees could catch him. It smelled like gasoline. Michael squirmed under the stomp of Jordie's boot between his shoulder blades, trying to push away with his legs. He was panicking. He tasted acid, like he might puke again.

"Get his arms, Jordie." Pete said.

"Why are you doing this…" Michael groaned. "I was only defending mys--ugh--" The kick struck him in the ribs on the right, where he'd already taken so many punches earlier. Michael bit down another cry of pain. The rib couldn't take another kick.

"Don't give me that look," Jordie was saying. "I'm not going to break him. Just a couple kicks. Can you hold him for me?"

"What did you expect me to do?" Michael's words scraped over his aching chest.

"Just shut up and take it, kid." Pete said.

"I'm not a 'shut up and take it' kind of person!" Michael shouted.

"You done?" Pete said, toeing a bruised rib.

"Don't break my ribs, man, come on, it's not fair."

Jordie's boot thumped lightly--painfully--against Michael's ribs, making him wince.

"This, Jordie said, "is mercy compared to what will happen later."

"If you defy us." Pete's boot came down on Michael's back. "Just behave, and things will be easy on you."

"If not," Jordie lifted his boot and Michael braced himself for a break.

I don't want to die. I don't want to die.

The booted kick smashed into his arm instead, making a ringing, pulsing sensation go down into his wrist and up into his shoulder. He groaned and writhed.

"Want me to do it again?" Jordie asked him.

Michael grimaced.

"Please, please don't."

@stainedglassthreads asked about my inspirations when it comes to comics creation, which I am always excited to talk about! (You have unwittingly activated my trap card, so be prepared for a long ramble!)

My comics are primarily a product of the 2014 Image boom and the 2000s webcomic scene....

...and the main sources of my comics craft knowledge are the works of writer Kieron Gillen, artist Jamie McKelvie, and colorist Matt Wilson. They're an incredible team and everything they've done together is worth checking out, but I'm going to talk about two of their comics here. Young Avengers (2012) is a good place to start. Tons of formalism and interesting panel layouts. It's the first place I looked for inspiration when I was planning the design for Looking Glasses. Definitely worth checking out if you like cape comics, but also worth it if you don't, it's pretty stand alone. (Plus it introduces a lot of ideas and characters that Marvel is currently pillaging for the MCU, so it's always nice to see those ideas in their original context before my employers ruin it)

I can't talk about comics without bringing up The Wicked + The Divine (2014, written by Kieron Gillen, art by Jamie McKelvie, colors by Matt Wilson, lettering by Clayton Cowles). It's an incredible comic and a formalist masterpiece. 12 young people are reincarnated as gods, they have two years to live, and also they're pop stars. Issues frequently challenge the way you read comics, or break into completely other mediums (One issue was written almost entirely by real world magazine writers interviewing the in-universe characters). You can see my influences here pretty clearly: the interstitials, the style shifting, my recent (incredibly blatant) reference to Lucifer's transformation. Also the fashion, Jamie McKelvie is a fantastic designer! This comic is a must read for anyone interested in the medium of comics, especially Kieron's writers notes (all available here on tumblr at @ kierongillen), where he breaks each issue down panel by panel. The writer's notes are essentially a free masterclass in comics craft. (and when you've read that, check out the zine I organized with @gen-is-gone and 37 other artists here on tumblr at @iconic-zine) I cannot overstate that this comic is the reason I make comics.

I feel like I can't not mention DIE (2018, written by Kieron Gillen, art by Stephanie Hans, lettering by Clayton Cowles). Six kids disappeared into their d&d world and returned two years later, now they're adults and their past is coming back to haunt them. It's a fascinating exploration of portal fantasies, and has definitely influenced how I approach the dark world/darkners. (also, if you read DIE and want a good breakdown of the historical stuff, be sure to check out the podcast DIE-Compressed)

Honorable mentions: The visual stylings of Caspar Wijngaard in Home Sick Pilots (2021, Watters, Wijngaard, Bidikar, Muller) The colors of colorist Jordie Bellaire, in this case Injection (2015, Ellis, Shalvey, Bellaire) The work of Emily Carroll Everything from Pretty Deadly (2015, Deconnick, Rios, Bellaire, Cowles) A lot of stuff from Sex Criminals (2014, Fraction, Zdarsky), it's an incredible comic that goes way beyond it's (fairly nsfw) concept. There's a ton of formalist stuff here, and it tackles all sorts of concepts with a level of depth you wouldn't expect from such a silly setup.

In terms of webcomics influence, I am, unfortunately, a bit of a Homestuck. There's a lot to be said about this comic and I'm trying to keep my word count down here, so let's just say that it's arguably one of the most influential webcomics, and while many of it's ideas aren't necessarily unique or are derivative of other works it is singular in it's scope and presence. I find it mainly affects my own work in the way I think about the website design. (Plus, you know, Toby Fox)

“May I?” Loki was asking— and he was trailing one hand downwards, fingers teasing along the line of Mobius’s belt. 

Mobius’s breath caught in an embarrassing little whimper, but he nodded anyway, a little distracted from wondering… Should he tell Loki he didn’t have any idea what he was doing, not really? Should he keep quiet and hope maybe Loki wouldn’t notice how woefully inexperienced he was beyond his own hands? Or— 

Mobius’s nervous train of thought was interrupted by Loki’s fingers finding his stiffened cock through his suit pants with a little squeeze— 

…And then Loki stopped, pulled back, and stared at Mobius with wide eyes and a slightly shocked look. 

“Wh… what is it?” Mobius asked, face flaming, instantly certain he’d done something wrong. “I’m sorry—” 

“Sorry?” Loki breathed, and to Mobius’s tentative relief, that slightly slack-jawed expression twisted up into a grin of delight instead. “My dear Mobius, you should definitely not be sorry about this.”
