These are SS I found on TT of one of the directors of DONTNOD. I 100% agree with what he had to say on here. And I’m severely disappointed and disgusted with the fans who are sending threats and think that’s okay. After reading what he said I think it made me love DE a lot more. But that’s just me and my opinion. I also dislike the fans that are harassing others for liking the game (I’ve experienced ALOT and it’s disappointing) it’s an opinion. You don’t have to like it but to attack another individual over it is ridiculous. I also love how he pointed out the hate over LIS2 because I’ll never forget the disgusting comments that were made about it because it wasn’t Max and Chloe centered. Please be respectful it’s not hard.

I love Warren but he is high key lost potential and it makes me so sad. His character doesn't have the best writing and has some pretty bad dialogue lines for no reason. Also we don't lnow anything about Warren besides the fact he loves science, movies, and has a crush on Max. Most major characters in the game have a backstory of some kind....except Warren. For god sakes, we get to talk to poor Taylor and learn about her sick mom, but there's net zero info on Warren His character is already very bare bones effort, the fact the devs caved in to procefielders and fucked him up even more to make them happier makes me livid. I stand on my belief that Carlos Luna was sabotaged. I also think there are other LIS1 characters who are lost potential like Brooke, Courtney, Stella, Dana and etc but that's a story for another day. 💀

I just wish we got so much more and to see more of who he was because he is so sweet, and I would've loved to see that more. It infuriates me to no end, knowing that the devs doubled down and appealed to the larger part of the fanbase, giving him fewer appearances, stating that he is a "stalker" in canon. I haven't read the comics but I I'm pretty sure they butchered his character there too.

I get that this game was important to many people, ESPECIALLY in 2014, because of the main female character getting the choice to romance her also female friend, that was super important and still is!!! But it's also not good to completely wipe another character, also stated as Max's best friend and another romance option and just. Giving us the option to hug or kiss him?? I'm not a big grahamfield-er either, but they had a lot of potential if they didn't completely ruin Warren's character because people didn't like him. There's still people who do??

I would've loved more depth to his character, even though it's really nice to read between the lines and make up some of my own things, I'm super afraid of going off of canon but like. There's barely any canon character to go off of so I can make up my own shit as I please- /pos

But I would've loved some dialogue of him worrying over having to study, and he probably shouldn't be out and about, gives us the feel that he pressures himself too much even if he's already doing his best and is one of the highest achieving students at Blackwell. Would've loved to see him being a bit mischievous at times after being exposed to Chloe, I firmly believe he'd be easily influenced and change his personality for the people he hangs out with without knowing. Which adds more depth!!

But ahhhhhh, I'm sorry for all the rants, guys😔😭 I don't want this to be all of what my blog is but everyone has a little hate/dislike in their heart and for me,,,,is assassinations of good characters. Whether literally or within writing. In Warren's case, it's both. I love sharing my art with all of you, but I still love it when you guys interact and send stuff in my inbox. It makes my day😭💖 This is not me telling you to stop because I kind of like ranting/raving about my favorite characters<3 so thank you ^^💖

1. tonight, I went to go see the black phone in theaters again (one time showing only typa deal, at least where I live, for those curious ig lol) and y'know,,, I've always known this one thing about myself, which is that my brain LOVES the theater. she loves going, she loves the loudness, the atmosphere, she loves it all, even if (clearly) she's seen the movie already. because of this silly little fact, and because I went to go see this silly little movie tonight, as I lay in the comforts of my warm bed and drink my dr.pep and eat my vanilla ice cream...

my brain all the while had apparently been working overtime behind my back. just as my head hit the pillow, she practically punched me in the throat with a fic idea that I just can't pass up. but I fear I have trouble committing, so I cannot promise it'll even come into fruition, let alone get finished. but on the off chance it does and I do... I will leave anyone reading right now with these...

2. sooner or later (hopefully sooner, though) I will be binging/rewatching life is strange 1 and 2 playthroughs, which will then allow me to add a masterlist for some of the characters I've been wanting to write about for a very long time now, which means requests for those characters will be open once I do (not yet, though lol) :D!!

I've done my fair share of fic reading back when wattpad was my main app, and while they were good for the time, lord knows I haven't touched that app in years and I'm NOT going back. but, unfortunately, there's not a lot of fics on here to read (my heart shattered into pieces when I looked up sean diaz's name and there was basically nothing😔💔) and I don't like fooling around with other fic sites, so, as usual, I must be the one to fill the void left both on this app and in my heart.

Watching the "Life is Strange" fandom tear itself apart, or: The pitfall of sequelizing choice-driven game narratives

"Double Exposure" has arrived, bringing us the long-awaited return of Max Caulfield.

SUPER MAX!

Sadly, it seems the LiS fandom is now positively tearing itself apart over this much-awaited return to a beloved protagonist. I guess that's not too surprising, given how I've certainly had really negative experiences with this fandom in the past, but THIS is a case where the uproar is being caused by the developers of the new game itself failing to understand their audience SO BADLY that they inflict what might be a mortal wound on their own franchise.

Understandably, this is how the fans are reacting.

Background:

For a decent plurality of people the triple punch of the original LiS, the subsequent "Before the Storm" prequel AND the Max-and-Chloe comic book series made it hard to accept the idea of the series moving on from the Arcadia Bay characters. It felt like it had BECOME about those characters by focusing on them for so damn long. And I was, at one point, one of those people — much to LiS Fandom Tumblr's hatred. I got a fair share of nastygrams over that. (Don't worry; that's not the only thing I got hate for. I also didn't ship Pricefield, which is a massive sin in these parts. :P)

But by the time "True Colors" rolled around? I'd quite warmed to the idea! I was comfortable with leaving them to their vague future of whatever, and only occasionally having surprise appearances from some supporting players. I thought that was cool. Because let's face it: Making a direct sequel to a game based around player choices is HARD. (We will swing back to that.)

.......evidently, however, most gamers did not think that was cool.

PICTURED: Protagonists that most fans of LiS1 didn't bother to get to know.

It's no secret by now that the return to Max is less driven by creative forces and more by financial ones. LiS 2 sold markedly less than the original AND its prequel... and True Colors sold worse still, putting the series in a dire place. We don't have any sales numbers, mind you, because god forbid a game publisher/developer actually tell us about their sales. So MAYBE this is just another case of Square Enix having absurd sales expectations. Either way, the end result is that Deck Nine, who have become the stewards of the franchise, went back to the Caulfield well in an attempt to salvage not only the franchise but also their own business. Furthermore? The new game, "Double Exposure," ends with the tease of MORE adventures with our familiar LiS1 characters. They're clearly hoping that not only will this return them to success, but that they'll get to keep on ridin' that success.

The promise of a third adventure is kind of frustrating but also tantalizing. It means we're going to continue tormenting these characters, but it also means we could potentially course-correct on the hot mess they've gotten themselves into.

So let's talk about the elephant in the room: How Double Exposure deals with the possible endings of the original LiS... or more accurately, how it DOESN'T.

(Spoiler Cut for both the original LiS and the early parts of Double Exposure)

The Situation Today (or: How Do You Deal with So Many Possibilities?)

In Life is Strange — the original — you can either direct Max to get romantically involved with her friend Chloe or direct her to romance Warren, the geeky guy crushing on her, OR you could do neither one of those and just blow them all off. And at the end of the adventure? You can either choose to save Chloe's life (sacrificing the town of Arcadia Bay and potentially many of its citizens in the process) or rewind to the start of the game and let Chloe die, effectively erasing most of the narrative you experienced.

There are other choices that can have lasting impacts to the game, too, but none that really affect where Double Exposure brings us. Me? I also opted to either leave Max single or have her romance Warren, because I always felt like Max and Chloe were an oil-and-water combination that made no sense as a couple. But there's no denying that most of the fandom FELL IN LOVE with Max and Chloe, aka "Pricefield." (To the point that NOT being a fan of "Pricefield" is apparently worthy of harrassment. Click my "Ask" button to send hate mail!) That ship is also a core component of the entire comic book sequel series that follows on from the "sacrifice Arcadia Bay" ending!

So Deck Nine decided that the Pricefield fandom was so powerful, that they had to acknowledge it in the new sequel. And THAT'S a good choice! In "Double Exposure," you can indicate that either Chloe died because you chose to sacrifice her, OR you can indicate that you saved her and you guys got together.

So, first red flag: There is no option to save Chloe AND not also have Max get romantically involved with her. This is the first sign thing aren't going to go how we'd like. I don't think it would've been hard at all to offer dialogue options that indicated they WEREN'T in that kind of relationship. I realize Deck Nine isn't dealing with BioWare-on-Mass-Effect-3-level budgeting, but I'm not asking for much! It could've literally changed some text details you can unlock and maybe a couple lines here and there, THAT'S FUCKING IT.

But that's not the part most people are gonna be pissed about, because they're going to be much MORE upset that, if you DID save Chloe? Then GET THIS:

Chloe ultimately dumped Max. The girl who sacrified a whole town for her. YEAH.

And it's been years, seemingly, since they've been in touch.

Oh, and Chloe has gotten tight 'n flirty with fucking Veronica since then. Y'know... the queen bully/bitch of the first game? Who can largely be held responsible for what happens to Kate? THAT Veronica. (Some people online even report that Chloe and Veronica might in a relationship?!)

HO-HO-HO-LEE SHIT. Now THAT is a series of fucking fandom-burning choices if there ever were any

Of ALL the people who could've survived the storm in Arcadia Bay... this fucking bitch?!

Making matters even WORSE is that, for the first time in the franchise, the latest game in this narrative-driven choice-based adventure only has one ending. You are funnelled to a singular conclusion no matter what you do! Your choices don't matter much! HOORAY!

...........given that they're teasing future adventures with Max, though, I'm sure this is a logical business decision that makes such sequels easier to develop.

Do I think Deck Nine could've handled this better? Well, yeah. I realize that high-school relationships don't often weather the test of time, but MAX DESTROYED A TOWN AND PRESUMABLY LET HUNDREDS DIE TO SAVE CHLOE'S LIFE. That's gonna leave a major mark on their bond. And I don't think it would've been that hard to have Chloe and Max in a long-distance relationship that keeps Chloe out of the picture for this adventure and severely limits how much she's referenced so that it's easier to write a single cohesive narrative. Doesn't sound hard to me, anyway.

But that doesn't mean I think anyone should really be going after Deck Nine's staff for this. YES, somebody somewhere clearly fucked up along the way, but game development takes hundreds of people, and there's no telling what kind of trickle-down decisions led to where we wound up. Besides... given that Deck Nine is dealing with a Hail-Mary throw to try and save the franchise, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a much lower budget this time around than in the last entry. So it would make sense if this game only has one ending AND only acknowledges so many choices from the original game because they just... didn't have the funding to write and program all the variations we'd prefer to see. :(

Sadly, it DOES seem like this mess is resulting in harrassment and threats directed towards the Deck Nine crew. This was brought up by one of the lead creators of the original, who did note that DontNod wasn't involved with this game — and this kind of thing is exactly why he never wanted to do a direct sequel to the original. Nevertheless, he did condemn the harrassment. PLEASE don't be like this, people. (But then, what do I expect from a fandom that i've always found to be FULL of harrassment and hatred... ?)

At this point, am I going to play Double Exposure? Well HELL YES. In spite of everything I've outlined herein, I ABSOLUTELY want to see Max again and go on another adventure with her. I am a sucker-ass consumer, and their cynical ploy to get my money has succeeded.

But I think this is the best attitude to take:

If you picked "Sacrifice Arcadia Bay/Save Chloe" at the end of the first game and are a staunch Pricefield shipper, then your sequel is in the comics. I've read two volumes of them - they're really good! There's six volumes in total — TONS of narrative to soak yourself in Max's ongoing adventures with Chloe and their ship.

If you picked "Sacrifice Chloe/Save Arcadia Bay" at the end of the first game, Double Exposure is your sequel. It's about Max moving on from the tragedy and guilt of her past, it lets her find new romantic options... it just fits.

If you picked anything else (like saving Chloe but NOT wanting to romance her)... well, maybe your sequel will still exist in some form one day. Probably best to go to fanfic for now, though.

Good luck out there. Try to have fun with the games, and try to stay safe.

Revisiting life is strange and its fandom is really bittersweet

I don’t think the fandom is completely dead, it’s not what it used to be and I accept that but it’s bittersweet

also I don’t wanna gatekeep anyone from discovering LiS late, I don’t believe in “true fans”- I’m glad we’re still getting fandom babies hehh, thankfully there is a lot of fan materials to be discovered

I just wanna be a sentimental fool about the life is strange fandom, I was there when the first episode came out I was as old as the characters and it was an event, a moment that can never be replicated- the barbenheimer for tumblr lesbians

We never had a game like this before, it felt tailor made for us and we went crazy

It was fun, you’d just log on tumblr and find new fanart of your favorite character or ship- inside jokes and shitposts were rampant, a couple of fan writers and artists came together and made a fan game- “Love is Strange” where Max gets to romance Chloe, Kate, Victoria, Amber (tell me I’m not the only who remembers shrektoria and Rachel eating a salad while laughing meme)

I made fanart and memes and they blew up but I lost that account

They’d call us sjw trash on YouTube and make fun of the game, we didn’t give a shit

But I think it was around before the storm where i started to lose interest and was burnt out, also I just didn’t like the direction they went with for the game I thought it was an unnecessary edition to the main story (Rachel didn’t need a complicated backstory, Elliot, too much conflict for 3 episodes) and I don’t think I was the only one cause this is where the fan art and fic updates started to slow down

Then I moved on to other things, other fandoms- shit happens.

Life is strange was just another part of my cringey teenage self who the hell cares I was cringe

But now I’m an adult, I have responsibilities and anxieties that I never knew I’d have to deal with- i went through a lot in the last 8 years sometimes I wish I was still that cringey ass teenager. This year was particularly bad, lost someone I loved

I stumbled upon old fan art on Pinterest and it reignited my love for the first game, I felt happy that I had something to take my mind off and goddamn revisiting the fandom years later is so bittersweet. I miss my old fandom mutuals, the blogs that used to update everyday were last active 5 years ago and most of the og fan artists had either rebranded or had left, one of them got hacked

Tumblr doesn’t make it easy for you to look up older posts, you have to rely on old blogs, Google or Pinterest (kinda made it my mission to archive what I can find)

There are new artists doing their own thing and I love that for them! Also people still write fanfics and update them, when I have the time I sketch out my fave characters and ships- it seems like there is a vocal community on tiktok but idk i don’t wanna go there

But it’s not what it was and I accept that, shit happens I’m glad I got to experience it during its peak and that I was left with good memories and content I can still enjoy

I’ve definitely seen shittier and deader fandoms

Before LiS and Steven universe there weren’t a lot of spaces that let you enjoy wlw ships, they were either upstaged by yaoi stuff or fetishized (deviantart) this game and its fan base helped me accept my identity as a lesbian, told me it’s not a fetish when two girls hold hands

Okay so this is my real review on the life is strange double exposure game. That original post I made was to troll

I went into it with an opened mind. I tried to stay away from much spoilers as I could but the internet made that impossible so I knew a little bit about things.

I thought the story was actually really good. I love a murder mystery type plot. I didn’t think it was to bad at all actually. The amount of twists and turns was awesome.

The characters were probably my favorite part about the game. I loved majority of the characters that max interacted with. The relationship dynamic between max, Safi and Moses was comforting gave me such sibling vibes.

Max and Amanda’s dynamic was really good and probably my favorite. I loved how they interacted and I loved how much Amanda cared for max.

Max and Reggie’s dynamic felt like big sister/little brother vibes. Reggie was absolutely hilarious and such a Comedic relief

Max and diamond’s dynamic was interesting to me. I loved diamond don’t get me wrong but I really couldn’t understand her very well. But that’s probably just me

Max and Vihn’s dynamic (prolly spelling his name wrong) was very interesting as well. I loved how we went from not liking him to him becoming apart of the gang and dating Reggie.

Gwen was like hot damn. Nothing else to be said. shoutout for trans representation ❤️ loved her

Now the only problem I had with this game was how they did Chloe. I think what they did with Chloe was entirely stupid and a trash take. Like I personally would’ve been fine if she was in the game but interacting with max throughout it. Her not being present doesn’t bother me but the way they just trashed her relationship with max is wild to me.

But besides this I thought the game was a 9/10. Cannot wait for what they have next for max’s story 🤘❤️

Warren hate has always been ableist in the very beginning. He gets too much shit for not understanding Max's body language. He gets a lot of hate 'for not taking a hint' or understanding social cues. Hell in the very beginning of the fandom like in 2015 i think i remember there were angry pricefielders calling Warren the literal r slur because he's 'so stupid'. Their words not mine. l I've seen people talk about how they're convinced he's a s*ciopath or a n*rcissist or a ps*chopath which I find ableist and uncomfortable. I think the biggest red flag from the fandom is how there's a lot of shit talk about Warren is an 'obsessive freak/stalker' in their eyes to talking in general about how 'obsessiveness' and 'obsessions' are red flags and are signs of 'evil' apparently and not symptoms of mental illness or neurodivergency apparently. I really relate to Warren and I also suffer from obsessive and actual intrusive thoughts, so i find this fandom to be extremely cruel and alienating toward people with stigmatizing illnesses which I find explains the Chloe demonization bc she is so BPD coded. I don't think Warren is autistic coded like Max but I do think he's ADHD / OCD coded in a way I can't explain. Sorry to drop this really long rant in your inbox, but you're not wrong about the Warren demonization and I just wanted to say something about it. Becauze the demonization of all these characters go back to ableism and the Life Is Strange fandom is the most ableist fandom I've ever been in at all and that really speaks volume about how atrocious it is.

He very much struggles with social interactions, very evident by the way he only talks teachers or people that are into the same stuff as him, he can become very chatty, sometimes too much, when it comes to things he likes which comes off as "annoying" and "obsessive" when he just wants friends.

I share. Alot of the same traits as Warren, with myself also having ADHD and liking science and talking excessively to the point where I find MYSELF annoying.

It's so upsetting too that the developers leaned INTO the stalker/obsessive Warren allegations that I can't even fucking talk about him or mentioning that I like him on certain platforms without the fear of people saying I "support stalking" which I don't. I can't defend him and say that he wasn't stalking without someone going, "but it's canon, the developers confirmed it!!" Yeah well, Mark and Nathan have done some more fucked up shit and I still see people defend them. (I love Nathan too for his complexity and ability to become better. He just needed help, but it doesn't excuse anything he did.)

Warren is the best character. He had so much potential to be an amazing recurring character, but he was their simply for plot convenience or to make the player not suspicious that Mark could be behind everything because Warren was "creepy"

I'm probably gonna have people saying I'm being a baby over this and that he's a fictional character and stuff, you can totally have your own opinion on Warren Graham, I'm not telling you you can't, just please stop calling people who like him "stalkers" or say they support stalking and creepy behavior, when that isn't true. The amount of hate towards anyone that isn't Max or Chloe, and then the immediate hate on YOU for not liking them or liking/defending another character makes me sick, as well as the flat out abelism. The reason why I left the fandom in the first place before picking it back up because of Warren<3
