Speaking frankly, but this game looked like a scam to me as soon as they announced its early access or whatever way too soon. Might be the reason why despite being interested, I kept it at arms length until they had something truly genre bending to show.
This wasn’t it.
#i understand they were a baby dev studio but with paradox behind them this shouldn’t have happened#unless paradox is in trouble too#anyway we’ve still got three in development with inzoi looking to be mostly done#but idk i don’t rlly trust their dev either… pubg was such a mess#life by you#lby#twitter

Life By You
This brand new life simulation game developed by Paradox Tectonic has just released an Official Trailer, a pre-order page at Epic Games Store, screenshots & concept art!
Early Access will be starting on September 12, 2023 and pre-orders are available from today! The first 100k people who pre-order will be invited to join a private Discord channel to ask questions directly to the team behind the game.
Earlier today the developers had a 20 min long livestream where they went over some of the ideas behind the game and what to expect from the early access period. Rod Humble, general manager at the studio, that has previously worked on The Sims 2 & The Sims 3 was there to introduce us to the game.
The game itself seems to be extremely customizable with a big focus on player control and openess. Color wheels, scripting objects in game, dialog editor, no loading screens or rabbit holes etc!
More news will be arriving in the coming months!

The levels of toxicity in the sims community really can be on some other stuff sometimes. The way people are trying to “drag” or “cancle” InZoi or any other sims competitor is truly weird.
Like y’all not canceling Burger King just cause you love McDonald’s or Wendy’s child. Y’all not boycotting Sephora because you shop at Ulta! No one is saying you can’t play the sims anymore. Play the game YOU want to play.
But to spew negativity just cause some people are excited about new games is wild. Y’all do realize competition is a good thing for us consumers, right? Like a company having a monopoly on anything is not good. It’s not good because y’all actually think it’s okay to spend thousands on DLC for a game that has more bugs than it does fixes. That’s what monopolies do. They take advantage of the fact that you have no other options or choices!
Having competition means EA actually has to hold themselves accountable because they know they will lose customers. They are not going to give up on the Sims because that’s literally their bread and butter. They have no other game as successful as the Sims. So trust, they’re not just going to stop making the sims. The sims won’t die lol. But will they make changes to keep up with the competition? Hell yes!
We really don’t know how great InZoi or Paralives is going to be or not be. Hell, fingers crossed it doesn’t happen, but they could get canceled just like Life by You. Who knows! But I’m more than willing to give both teams a chance. And if you don’t want to give them a chance, that’s fine! Play sims 4 until you’re blue in the face. Or sims 2 or 3 for that matter. But don’t attack people just cause they feel differently 🙄. Or better yet, don’t attack the developers or make up crap to make them look bad. They’re learning and clearly asking for feedback every step of the way. So allow them to do their jobs before jumping to conclusions.
The internet, I swear.

Every time someone brings up adding wheelchairs or mobility aids to life sims people are like “but that’s too depressing! I’m trying to play my ideal life!” and it’s like
1) do you not think wheelchair users might also want to play their ideal life
2) DID YOU JUST FULL CHEST FULL ASS ADMIT YOU SEE PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS AND GET DEPRESSED??? DID YOU JUST FULL TONGUE IN YOUR FULL SHIT MOUTH SAY “but in my ideal world people like them would not exist 🥺”. FUCKING EUGENICS JONES OVER HERE LIKE “but what about my great race society :( “
And people are always like “oh that’s reasonable, people want to escape”, like no it isn’t. I’m not gonna dictate how others play their game, but it isn’t reasonable to want to escape the completely neutral existence of people who are different from you! It’s shitty! That’s a shitty way to look at other normal human beings living their normal lives!
😑 i’m tired

LIFE BY YOU ...
So Paradox Software announced today its new simulation life game : Life by you ...
Impressively Open World with a new kind of dialogue interaction engine full of possibilities, the return of the “Create a Style” ( such as the Sims 3 ) in a more modern style, quite many transportation ways including the possibility to drive a car by yourself, freedom to explore, freedom to place a house almost anywhere you want in the landscape ... well interesting stuff indeed.
As a non native english speaker, I shall having to rewatch the presentation video of course ...
Tools for modders will be quickly available. It seems the moto of this new game will be freedom of the gameplay. Which is excellent !
We didn’t see much construction abilities, almost nothing in fact ... But I'm pretty sure there will be soon many pictures and videos about Life By You.
I don’t know if it’s because the alpha stage or Real Engine or something else but the light of the demo is quite horrible : far far too much contrast, tiring for the eyes indeed !
I hope the UI design will more harmonious colored that shown in the first pictures ...
It will be available next September and for Windows ONLY : which is for now a bad point to me. More specifications on Paradox website ...
There is much more to say but better to discover it by yourself ;)
Quite interesting to watch the presentation : here

Honestly, I'm relieved. This game was still looking so rough and I'd feel much more comfortable with a June release than this coming out in 6 weeks.
I was watching a video from SatchoSims* and he talked about how LBY is more just a compilation of gameplay features without any gameplay and he definitely pinpointed my main issue with the game despite my excitement for it. I just don't know what I'm going to DO or what I will want to do because they haven't really done a good job of explaining the rules and structures and goals of the game (aka what the game is about).
I'm still excited for it and will definitely play it in June and am eager to check out the modding tools but yeah, what are we doing?
The Sims was a time management game. You had to figure your shit out and meet your basic needs all while juggling other mini challenges and responsibilities and TRY to become successful which would then unlock cool shit to buy or do that you would have the time to do because the money and rewards and perks you grinded for allowed you to do it.
And then TS2 improved on that by focusing on interpersonal relationships and making that more complex so that Sims felt more unique but also had to focus more on mental health and well-being and the drama that comes with interacting with other people.
Then TS3 took that even farther by basically unleashing chaos all around you with an open world so you have less control over what is going on so while you are grinding away to create a dream house for the Sim you want to marry and grow old with, you head over to the park and see your future spouse making out with some asshole in zebra print pants! And then on top of that, they deepened skills and hobbies so Sims have soooo much to do so that life goals are so much more diverse (though I will admit this came at the expense of interpersonal relationships). People often say that they wish TS3 had TS2's hobby system but in my opinion, it not only does but it's infinitely much better than TS2's. I would argue that TS3 at its core is a game about hobbies and interests.
I love that LBY seems to be wanting to improve on TS3 (because TS4 definitely didn't) and give us a true life simulator but I still don't understand what the game is about. They show off how many traits they have and how we can mod in our own traits but what do the traits means? If a character has a Difficult Childhood trait, how is that going to affect their ability to form relationships, fall in love, be a good parent? They said we could have truly homeless characters to play Rags to Riches challenges. That's awesome! Can we see that? How does the economic system work? Could it be integrated, for example, where household taxes and bills actually go towards community development? Like THIS is gameplay. I don't want to see another treasure trove video or someone doing work tasks. Those are features, not core gameplay and if it is then I'm afraid Rod Humble is making TS4 competitor, not TS3 which would be a shame.
*I don't know if I like him or not, but he has good viewpoints compared to the other high-profile Sims 4 YouTubers who at this point are practically on the Maxis payroll desperately trying to pretend that game is interesting because it literally pays their bills 😭😭

Really interesting article about how Life By You's Rod Humble noticed players use life simulation games. Very interesting to me that he brings up telemetry and then mentions how such information could, and I quote, "go to hostile governments".
This is so funny. They're really playing hard ball and they're hitting all the right buttons for simmers. I really hope they can make this work.

In Other News: “Life By You” Is Officially Canceled
Less than a month after having its release delayed for a third time, “Life By You” is now officially canceled. The news was shared on the game official forums.
The open world life simulator had been in development for years by Paradox Tectonic, led by former The Sims head Rod Humble. The final announced release date was June 4th, after a series of videos with videogame influencers showing off its features.
You can read the whole post below.
” Hi all, Sadly, we’ve decided to cancel the release of our long-awaited life sim Life by You. This was an incredibly difficult call to make and is a clear failure on Paradox’s part to meet both our own and the community’s expectations. We realize this raises some large questions; here we hope to shed at least some light on why we opted to cancel, rather than delay as we communicated earlier. Life by You has been in the works for a long time and we’ve been very excited about the promise and the potential of this game. Our hope was always that it would be able to leave a mark in this exciting and new genre for us. That’s why we’ve opted to delay it twice, to give the studio and the game a fair shot at realizing the potential we saw. For each delay we made, we’ve seen incremental improvements, which in hindsight may well have led us to focus on details rather than the whole picture. A few weeks back, we decided to hold off on an Early Access release in order to re-evaluate Life by You, as we still felt that the game was lacking in some key areas. Though a time extension was an option, once we took that pause to get a wider view of the game, it became clear to us that the road leading to a release that we felt confident about was far too long and uncertain. This is not to say the game has not shown any promising qualities; Life by You had a number of strengths and the hard work of a dedicated team that went into realizing them. However, when we come to a point where we believe that more time will not get us close enough to a version we would be satisfied with, then we believe it is better to stop. This is obviously tough and disappointing for everyone who poured their time and enthusiasm into this project, especially when our decision comes so late in the process. At the end of the day, our job is to release games that are fun, interesting, and challenging for our players, and our every decision should be taken with that purpose in mind. When we get that right, we earn our pay. So, how do we ensure we don’t find ourselves here again? Honestly, there are no real guarantees. Games are difficult to get right, and we’ll definitely make mistakes, which, as these things go, always become painfully apparent in hindsight, but still shouldn’t reach this kind of magnitude regardless. We have to take a long and hard look at what led us here and see what changes we have to make to become better. In the end, our mission remains the same, and we’ll continue to take whatever steps we need to do just that. Sincerely, Mattias Lilja, Deputy CEO of Paradox Interactive “
