RJ is Reading… (April)
Lies Like Poison by Chelsea Pitcher
One petal of poppy
One petal of lily
One petal of belladonna
A recipe for the perfect murder…
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5/5 stars
“I started off having a hard time getting into the story, but it just gripped me as it progressed. The symbolism with each characters fairytale and the way that they rewrite and twist the tales of their own lives is just so interesting. I gasped at so many little details. I love that Beauty became the Beast, but my favourite tale was by far Jack’s. (Also, ADORE that they were all in queer relationships! 🏳️‍🌈)”

Liar liar
Over the years I have collected a vast selection of books with "lie" or a variation of it in the title, so I decided to read them all. Here are my reviews of We Were Liars, Lies Like Poison, The Supreme Lie and One Of Us Is Lying. Janus Sanders would be proud!
23/10/2022
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
3.5/5
Booktok book, oh no! To be honest, I can see why it is popular. It's main theme of familial/generational trauma is expressed incredibly well, and even me, who's experience in that subject only stretches to watching Encanto, could really see the reality of the terrible Sinclair family, and how it affects those who are a part of it. I didn't go into the book expecting a story about that (the perils of no blurb) but it was interesting to read about anyway, and I feel those who relate more closely to the subject would enjoy it even more. Now. The plot twist. I try my best to do spoiler-free reviews, so I won't reveal it, but. The plot twist, the overall "answer to the underlying question throughout the book", was a simple solution. A bobs your uncle, here's how it actually is, done, solution. Shocking, no doubt, and I will enjoy reading the book again in the future and spotting all the things that reveal it, but nothing to uncurl. Not sure if I liked it. As a fan of murder mysteries which have complicated solutions that you have to get your head around, it wasn't exactly my piece of cake. And finally. The metaphors. I have seen other people on TikTok comment on this, so I'm not alone. They were a bit too good. So much so that I didn't know whether our main character actually got "shot" or whether it was just a metaphor. This happened all throughout the book and I got very confused!
Favourite Character: Johnny
Would I recommend this book: Mm. Depends. As I said, if you are interested in familial trauma and it's effects, and are ready for a frankly devastating plot twist, go ahead. Just be prepared.
I feel like past me may of slandered this book a bit too much. I skim read it a bit, I think. It's very good, I promise!

Lies Like Poison by Chelsea Pitcher
3/5
I really enjoyed This Lie Will Kill You by Pitcher, so I had high hopes for this book, but I'm sad to say that it let me down. There were almost two books in one, the murder mystery story and a story about the main characters' journeys and emotions, discovering things together and apart. The latter could of existed without the former perfectly, with some tweaks. I guessed the murderer and the story behind that pretty quickly, and if it was just that, without the beautiful description of emotions, then this book would be a 1/5! (Sorry). Two books in one. Focus on one thing please! Sufficient gay and trans people though.
Favourite character: Lily
Would I recommend this book: Sorry, no. Read This Lie Will Kill You!

The Supreme Lie by Geraldine McCaughrean
3.5/5
I think past me may have been a little bit too nice to this book, giving it the same rating as We Were Liars.
Halfway into this story I discovered that McCaughrean was quite an established author, writing popular novels which were mainly for people younger than me. It definitely gave that vibe, of a story a children's author has been building in her head for a while, wanting to finally write it down to produce something different than her usual novels. I say this because it was an incredibly well designed world, meticulous and, frankly, very creative. Many stories could be told in that one world. I did have to keep referring to the very useful map! The twist villain didn't really work for me because, to put it simply, I wasn't paying attention when it was said who he was! Oops. Slow start, and also alternating chapters. Listen, I have nothing against alternating chapters! Me with a short attention span sometimes likes two stories going on at once, and I especially like when they cross over beautifully. But the second, not main story in The Supreme Lie about some boy and his dog, I really didn't care about. At one point I was tempted to skip every other chapter. Sorry! I think I said this book wasn't a complete failure because 1) the characters were quite loveable, and 2) the end was quite good with the tension. But the rest of the book dragged!
Favourite character: Kovet (I have completely forgotten who this is)
Would I recommend this book: Maybe for people younger than me. I only bought it because of the cover and the blurb, and because it was in buy one get one half price, but I don't completely regret it. Read other people's reviews of this book, maybe. This review, I realize, is not very helpful! (Basically, the book is about a country plagued with endless rain, and after the leader dies, a simple serving girl must pretend to be the leader as not to send the country into complete dismay. I probably should have mentioned that!)

One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
4/5
Dammit, this book could of been a 5! All throughout reading it I was like this is really good, really good, this could be a 5. But then I guessed the murderer. And it was, frankly, a really disappointing solution. The kind of solution you jokingly guess. Devastating, but I enjoy classic whodunnits where you, well, catch whodunnit. I've heard that the TV show has a better, more surprising and thought out solution, and it's a shame the book doesn't as well. I guess that's why they changed it! Nonetheless, the book was still really good. Different character POV chapters were nice and refreshing, (another reason why the ending was disappointing- I wanted one of the seemingly truth telling character POVs to be lying!) and I liked the whole omniscient-edgy-tumblr-poster-seemingly-murderer making fun of everyone struggling to find them. And again, sufficient and realistic gay people. I was genuinely engrossed in all the characters stories, and even, for once, the romance. Good book.
Favourite character: Kris
Would I recommend this book: Let's be honest, you've read it.

Sorry if the last review was a bit spoilery. But, as I said, you have most definitely either watched it or read it. Hope you enjoyed these reviews!
Books I still have left to post: ↪ The Song Of Achillies ↪ How To Kill Your Family ↪ House Of Hollow ↪ Afterlove ↪ A Whole New World ↪ Splinters Of Sunshine And I want to do a Glass Onion/ Knives out post. Goddammt, I have just realized you press shift new line to make a new line without a huge space. Ughhhhh. Expect better formatting next time, then.
See you, Hans :)

This lie will kill you by Chelsea Pitcher ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rating: 3/5 stars
Description: One year ago, there was a party. At the party, someone died. Five teens each played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth. But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize.
Review: There was some unexpected plot twists and great writing. I did find it quite confusing at times and I think the characters could of been introduced better because it took my a while to figure out who was who. I did like the plot initially but thought it got a bit over complicated and too much was happening at once. Overall, I give the book 3/5 stars because I liked the idea of the plot and I liked the plot twists but it could have been executed better.

House M.D. but it's when a character says the name of the episode
#house md#prince's talk tag#flashing#repitition#so as i was watching this show i noticed they'd say the episode title in the episode#so i wanted to see how many times they did it#the people on livejournal who made transcripts of the episodes are my saviors and without them this would of been so much harder to do#thank you all for your service and i hope wherever you all are you're having a great day#sometimes they would use a variation of the word like in the episode poison they would say 'poisoned' or 'poisoning'#i did not include those instances#there was an instance in 'merry little christmas' where they do play the song in the show#but since ella fitzgerald was not a character in the show i did not include it#where as in the episode 'joy to the world' the students are singing it in the concert so i did include that#i apologize for the tonal whiplash when you get to that part but it did make me laugh#one of the times kutner says 'locked in' is overshadowed by the POTW's voice over but i assure you he says it and thats why its in there#out of the main characters from the one who said the title the most to least are#House > Foreman > Wilson > Chase > Cuddy > Adams > Cameron and Taub > Kutner > Thirteen and Park#this took a bit to do lolol its probably been done already but i wanted my own#there is a chance im missing some on technicalities but idc. im fine with this#there are two more i wanna do but with a character saying another character's name but ill do that some other time#EDIT: When I was making this video I was unaware that the Pilot episode went by two names: 'Pilot' and 'Everybody Lies'#Basically everywhere I looked the first episode was only referred to by 'Pilot'#which I found weird bc i remember seeing somewhere that the last episode was paired with the first episode in terms of title#but i couldn't find hard proof so I decided to leave it out at the time#well i checked again last night and yea the pilot IS also called Everybody Lies so I updated the video#I also think it goes well with the fact that House does say 'Everybody Dies' in the finale so another reason to fix it#AND he says it without Wilson while he and Wilson say the title of the pilot sooooo yea hehehehehe

Lila's and Diego's pipeline from flirty, might possibly kill each other, bi4bi, malewife and girlboss couple to way too realistic married couple, who resents each other and is clearly struggling and teethering on the edge of a divorce is sth that is so devastating to ME specifically

canon divergence where the poison kicks in earlier/harder, and so instead of having their Dramatique Divorce Hatefuck Fight in the east sea, Di Feisheng gets to whatever beach he's going to storm the sigu sect/fight Xiangyi on etc, and finds Li Xiangyi face down in the sand, poisoned to shit and barely breathing, clearly in zero state to fight because of the near death experience he is currently, uh, experiencing.
no worries though, Di Feisheng has medicine demon on call. Clearly whatever the fuck is going on here is uhhhh Incredibly Sus, given someone has now tried to murder both of the leaders of Sigu sect and apparently actually succeeded killing 1/2, but honestly, not really Di Feisheng's problem! his problem is getting Xiangyi back into fighting shape and then, y'know, fighting him. best of luck to the Sigu sect but he's different.
except of course he -- and everyone else on the boat, one assumes -- rock back up to medicine demon's weird offsite lab living situation, and medicine demon is like good news boss I recognise this poison! bad news boss it's super ultra fatal and also the poison is coming from inside the house alliance
which is very extremely no bueno, both because uhhh who the fuck betrayed him like this he needs their heads on spikes yesterday, and also because what the fuck do you mean there's no cure, fucking work one out!
long story short: di feisheng spends the next mmmmm several years laying low, maybe kinda faking his death/seclusion a little by implication of dropping off the map after a big duel was meant to happen, while he and the few people he's sure he can trust go right the hell through the Jinyuan alliance trying to find all the people who betrayed him.
and also playing the world's scariest nurse/buddy cop duo to Li xiangyi, who is not yet dead of poison thanks to medicine demon's questionable approach to medical ethics and informed patient consent, is very fucking angry about life, and very fucking determined to find out who murdered his shixiong and made him break the treaty under false pretences.
(and also poisoned him, he guesses).

Watching ST1 and surprised by just how much Nancy lies. She lies even when she has no reason to, like when she's hanging out with Steve and his friends and wants to leave, she could have easily said something like "I need to do something" or "I'm tired" but she made up some excuse about her mom. When asking Barb's mom about Barb, she could have easily told her she was worried but she didn't. Girl just lies like it's second nature to her.

ok so we can all collectively agree that D9 took the biggest fattest shit on pricefield & completely butchered chloe’s entire character, but on a lighter note i haven’t seen anyone talking about this gross mischaracterization of max yet?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like please be sooo fr rn, of all things a COSMO is her go-to drink? and you’re telling me this born & bred PNW hipster right here HATES the taste of BEER?
idk about you but my max caulfield would NEVER. my max caulfield is the queen of analogue cameras and all things oh so subversive. she absolutely would’ve been riding the hell out of that early 2010s IPA craze and she’d 100% still be all pretentious about it even almost a decade later. she’d go on tangents about her favorite local brewery and how the Texan Dogfish has this layered, super complex flavor profile to anyone who’d listen. she wouldn’t be caught dead drinking some basic cocktail.

Paper Ships: Belladonna Drake x Lily Holloway (Lies Like Poison by Chelsea Pitcher)
"There's only one way to break the spell," Lily said. Miraculously, her hand was no longer caressing the rose, but rather had come to rest on Belle's.
That time she felt more than a pulsing inside her chest. She felt a thud. "How?" she asked, turning her hand over so they could lace their fingers together.
"You have to kiss someone." Lily looked up, a slight quirk in her lips. "Someone you love. Do you think you can do it?"
Belle sucked in a breath, forcing herself to look Lily in the eyes.
"I can try," she whispered, and though nothing happened between them that night, the possibilities unfolded inside her like pathways twisting in a forest. They could have adventures together, and maybe someday her heart would be healed enough to let Lily in.

#Charlie Kirk dude . . . . . .#if you want more women to be conservative then actually listen to them instead of pushing the traditional marriage viewpoint#where you shame women for pursuing careers and degrade women in their early thirties#and say it's impossible to reach women to make them conservative unless they're married with kids#ESPECIALLY#since your own life makes a hypocrite out of you#women are tired of being told to get married and have kids#women are tired of being blamed for low birth rates and marriages#especially when there's no reflection on the men's part to figure out if they might actually have a part in chasing women away from that li#life#women are tired of this rhetoric and you will only put them up in arms if you continue to criticize them#for choosing to have careers over families#By being this way you sound more like a poison pill for conservatives- trying to chase away women rather than appeal to them#the traditional life you hold to was not because of innate biology but because of necessity and later society#when women were given the chance in WWII to work they did so gladly and had to be forced back into the home#We are people with thoughts and dreams and aspirations#and those don't all point to motherhood#stop it please I beg of you#telling women they are supposed to married with kids will not fix the nuclear family#telling women they're past their prime in their thirties will not encourage more families#you only give them ammo to dislike you and refuse to listen to you
