I've previously written how the immortal Li Tieguai (李鐵拐, "Iron Crutch Li") is sometimes shown wearing a golden headband like Sun Wukong (see section 3.1 here). Well, Béla (@thefloorbeast), a reader of my blog, recently sent close up photos of Li from a painting in the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, USA. One example is attached below.
He appears to be pulling a ghostly sword from behind his ear. Notice that the blade doesn't appear on the other side of his head. This is similar to the way that the Monkey King pulls his staff out from inside his ear. I'm wondering if there is any connection.
I'll make an update if I find anything interesting.

I have been trying to understand the nature of Guǐ xiān ("Ghost Immortals") in the Zhongli Chuandao ji. The Baidu article claims Li Tieguai is an example of a ghost immortal, but I've also seen him described as a Shijie xiān. Wikipedia claims that they can siphon life energy from the living like vampires, but I couldn't find a written example of this at all. Maybe this vampirism bit refers to the demon in "The Painted Skin"? Is "Guǐ xiān" just a synonym for Shijie xiān? A synonym for ghost ? IDK
This is a very precise ask. Sadly I am unable to help you much. Assuming the citation from Zhongli Chuandao ji given here is accurate, much like Wikipedia claims this term appears in in an enumeration of different types of immortals - "ghost immortals" (鬼仙), "earthly immortals" (人仙), "human immortals" (地仙), "divine immortals" (神仙) and "heavenly immortals" (天仙). However, there's no reference to "vampirism" and there is also no comparison with foxes contrary to the Wikipedia snippet - a "ghost immortal" is just a ghost of a person who rushed their way through the pursuit of immortality but didn't exactly attain it properly, it seems. I didn't manage to find the original source of the claim that this label was ever applied to Li Tieguai. I think it would make perfect sense for him to essentially be his own type given how unique his situation is, but I don't really think any variant of his legend reflects the Zhongli Chuandao ji definition. Either the term is used in a different way in another source (some Ming or Qing play or novel, perhaps?) or it's an online invention; I can't provide evidence for either.

PGR Ascendant OC squad
"A collection of loosely assembled members led by an unknown Agent that simply goes by the alias of 'Nameless One'. They all follow their own sense of morbid curiosity. Under their leader's idea that nothing can be truly perfect, they find joy in this endless search.
This group will be referred to as the Eight Immortals."
Li Tieguai A machine that used to be the assistant of a wildlife biologist, whom he referred to as "master". He wishes to recreate, and therefore preserve, the entire world with the Punishing. He believes this is the best way to honor his master's memory. His true form is something akin to a qilin.
Zhang Guolao A creature born of the Punishing Virus during one of Nameless's experiments. He shares Li Tieguai's views–not out of compassion for someone else, but out of a sense of superiority. This often leads to the two butting heads.
He Xiangu She rarely leaves Mount Penglai, being somewhat lazy and too occupied with her own looks. Her goals are unknown at the moment. Her true form can be loosely called a "fishman".
Lan Caihe They don't seem to have a goal of their own, so they accompany the other Immortals' whims. Their true form is something akin to a nudibranch.
Han Xiangzi He is often seen with the Nameless One. He carries out orders the best he can, but it is undeniable he has a soft spot for humans. His true form is something akin to a nightjar.
Lu Dongbin His only interest is fighting, though he's often faced with disappointment. His true form is something akin to a praying mantis.
Cao Guojiu He tends to act as the intermediary between the Nameless One and parties of interest. Although he does not operate independently, he has expressed interest in seeing whether humanity can grow alongside the Punishing and join the Ascendants. His true form is something akin to a spider.
Han Zhongli He holds a strong disdain for humans, but he generally does not go out of his way to kill them as he finds it to be a waste of time. Instead, he'd rather watch from the sidelines and actively admonish them. His true form is something akin to a crane.

The Immortals Gama Sennin and Tekkai Sennin, Kuroda Ryōzan, early 19th century, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Japanese and Korean Art
two-panel screen with two separate images; L panel: scruffy male figure seated on rock with flat bald spot on head, gazing to UR; robes open; holding gourd in PL hand, PR hand on knee; very long and pointed fingernails and toenails; R screen: shaggy male figure in open white robe seated on rock stroking large white frog with PL hand; looks out at viewer with half closed eyes; mouth slightly open showing two pointed teeth; flat bald spot on head This two-panel screen depicts the Daoist immortals, Gama Sennin (Chin. Liu Hai) and Tekkai Sennin (Chin. Li Tieguai). The two were often paired in Japanese and Chinese art because of their corresponding supernatural powers. Depicted on the right is Gama Sennin, known literally as the ‘toad hermit,’ a character based on the historical civil servant and alchemist Liu Hai of 10th century China. Various accounts associate Gama with a large, three-legged toad by which he can be identified. Gama was thought to be able to release his spirit from his body, metamorphose, and fly with the aid of his magical companion. Chinese prototypes of this theme sometimes represent the immortal sitting on or resting his foot on the animal and holding a string of gold coins, with which he is supposed to have lured the toad from its hiding place in a well. Here, however, Kuroda Ryōzan has depicted the relationship between his subjects as one of affection rather than of conquest. Gama’s flattened head, broad nose, and wide grin convey an eccentric character and otherworldly nature. Tekkai Sennin is the Japanese adaptation of one of the Eight Immortals (Baxian), an assemblage of Daoist and/or folk deities. He was thought to be capable of leaving his body, sometimes traveling for extended periods. On one occasion, he asked a disciple to watch over his body and instructed him to burn it if his spirit did not return in seven days. On the sixth day, however, the disciple’s mother died, so he burned his master’s body and went home. Returning on the seventh day, Tekkai’s spirit found his body gone, leaving him no choice but to adopt the corpse of an emaciated beggar that he found beside the road. Like Gama Sennin, he is associated with medicine, and is traditionally represented with a gourd that signifies his ability to transcend the body and to offer healing. While usually appearing as a decrepit figure after his physical transformation, here Ryōzan has chosen to depict Tekkai as he exhales his spirit from his mouth. Kuroda Ryōzan was a Size: 52 3/4 × 22 5/16 in. (133.99 × 56.67 cm) (image, L screen) 52 13/16 × 22 5/16 in. (134.14 × 56.67 cm) (image, R screen) 66 3/4 × 69 5/8 × 11/16 in. blanc-de-Chine Taoist Immortal; holding a double gourd and resting on crutch; rectangular plinth molded with heart shaped panels Figures of the Eight Daoist Immortals were popular in Europe as exotic ornaments and novelties, which allowed the Chinese to sell them to both eastern and western markets without alteration into the 19th century. When Uncle tells of how the Demon Sorcerers were defeated by the Eight Immortals, it is quite fascinating to notice that the pairs we see on the screen aren’t the pairs the plotline mentions. What I mean is that the Immortals here are mixed up.
Shi Wu, for exemple, is seen fighting against He Xiangu, the only female among the Immortals, but her symbol is the lotus flower (which the story says is the symbol of the immortal that banished Tso Lan). She even wields one in her hand.
I don’t know if this was done on purpose, to show that the Immortals worked together (after all, I’m sure they backed up each other during fight with demons and didn’t go in there just solos) or if it is just a mistake... I headcanon that the immortals we see on screen did the fighting while another immortal sealed away the demons.
Dai Gui is seen fighting Zhongli Quan, the wielder of the fan (who banished Xiao Fung).
Xiao Fung is fighting Lu Dongbin, the sword-wielder (who banished Shendu).
Tchang Zu is fighting Li Tieguai (the Immortal with a gourd for symbol that banished Bai Tza).
As for the four others left, my guessing is a bit more hazardous.
I guess the immortal battling Po Kong is Cao Guojiu (since he is usually represented with tablets covered in inscriptions, here easily replaced by the parchment - he is the castanets Immortal who banished Tchang Zu)
As a result, the Immortal fighting Bai Tza must be Zhang Guolao, the drum-immortal who banished Po Kong (He is supposed to be the oldest looking of the Eight, and here he is the one with the longest beard).
I guess the one fighting Tso Lan must be Lan Caihe (the Immortal usually seen carrying around a basket of flowers, and represented wearing blue clothes, supposed to have defeated Dai Guyà
And the one fighting Shendu must be Han Xiangzi, the flute-playing Immortal that banished Shi Wu.
