Do you think the Silmarilion is worth reading as its own book? Once tried to as a kid but found it boring as if I was reading a fictional bible or something (ironic considering Im reading the real thing for the second time right now lol)
P.S. Also sorry if I came of as a dick in some of the replys to your post, wont happen again
Yes and no. There are some interesting stories there, but i cannot under any circumstances advice you to read the whole thing through from cover to cover. It's a history book, and it reads like one.
There are tales in it worth reading though, but i would far more advice you to instead read the actual books Christopher hammered together out of his father's work before his death, before trying to read the equivelant of their stories in the silmarillion.
The children of Hurin is not a perfect read(it has a couple of timeskips where it's clear tolkien had things planned, but because he didnt get it done before it finished, the book basically sums up a time of war and adventure in narration. Think how LOTR's early chapters had a passage where 17 years passes as Gandalf came and went as he tried to figure out Bilbo's ring, and you have it), but it's overall a pretty good book, that covers the important parts of Turin's life, even if it's a greek styled tragedy.
I havent actually gotten around to reading the Fall of Gondolin, but from what i hear it does a much better job of hammering in the point that the battle of the unnumbered tears really was the last chance the forces oppossing Morgoth had a chance to win in a conventional war, and it was impossible after.
as for the book version of Beren and luthien, from what i hear it has the problem that Christopher was unwilling to just hammer out one, definite version out of his father's many, many takes, so the version we got here is a sorta frankenstein of the many texts, where it's treated as all the various in universe legends about this tale in one, sorta overlapping book. all fine and dandy, except there are part that are extremely confusing, as there were versions where Beren was an elf as well, removing a lot of the logical reasons why the plot happens.
honestly, i would recommend just reading the lay of leithian, https://tolkienleithian.blogspot.com/2013/03/canto-i.html which tells most of the important and interesting part of the story, and has a summary for the second and less interesting part. it is a story told in song though.
as for the rest, there arent more direct books, but there is an alternative to the first part of the silmarillion, The Ainulindale. the creation of the world.
it unfortunately only covers the first part, and doesnt go far enough to cover the age of the lamps, the awakening of the elves and melkor's first imprisonment, but it's a far more engaging alternative and coherent retelling of the making of the world than the more abstract yet dry telling from the silmarillion.
as for the rest of the silmarillion, there is worth to most of the stories, but if you read the ones i recommended above, the only one i would say are must read, are:
chapter 2: which retells how the dwarves and ents came to be.
Chapter 5-9, and then 13, which tells the story of feanor and his sons from valinor to their siege of angband(narratively its far and away the most coherent part of the story, even with that skip between 9 and 13).
chapter 17-18 which tells about how men came to the west and became part of the political world there, the breaking of the great siege, and Fingolfin's famous duel with morgoth.
Also if you just wanna read the duel in song form as Tolkien originally intended, here's another lay of just that.
chapter 20: The battle of the unnumbered tears, the last shot of victory. Also told in Children of Hurin, but this chapter is actually good, so i'd recommend reading it regardless.
chapter 22: which explains what the hell happened to Doriath, and sees the story of the sons of feanor reach it's end.
chapter 23: The story of Earendil the mariner, and the war of wrath that ended Morgoth's reign, and sunk beleriand under the sea.
after that, if you want to read about the second age, go read fall of numenor instead. its a way better source, even if not hammered together by Christopher.

*puts on conspiracy theory hat*
I know it is written somewhere that jrrt never intended for Gil-galad to be the son of Fingon, but I have found something that made me reconsider it:
So i'm reading Beren and Lúthien, and theres this small section (part of an excerpt from the Lay of Leithian) describing the northern landscape approaching Angband:
" Once wide and smooth a plain was spread, / where King Fingolfin proudly led / his silver armies on the green, / his horses white, his lances keen; / his helmets tall of steel were hewn; / his shields were shining as the moon. "
And who is Fingolfin? That's right, the father of Fingon.
Now you might already be seeing what I was seeing, but I when I read this, I was like hmmmm why does this sound familiar??
So we all remember the poem "The Fall of Gil-galad" yes? The one Bilbo translated into common speech and that Sam recited on Weathertop in Fellowship? Here's the second stanza:
" His sword was long, his lance was keen. / His shining helm afar was seen; / the countless stars of heaven's field / were mirrored in his silver shield. "
Am I going crazy? Maybe! But there sure are a lot of similarities in the language here....
UPDATE: after writing all this above, I peeked at the Tolkien Gateway Wiki and discovered that Tolkien did in fact recycle phrasing from the Lay for the poem in the Fellowship, so my point may be moot BUT we go on:
I don't think there's an "in-story" author for the Lay (is the Lay as a text/poem canon within legendarium/tolkien universe? Like is it something the characters know?), other wise I would have just said the in-story authors of these two poems were probably just Gilgalad son-of-Fingon son-of-Fingolfin truthers.
But since the Ley seems to just exist as an external narrative (as in, it doesn't seem to be a text that exists within the story like the Fall of Gilgalad does), that tells me it kinda reflects what Tolkien himself was thinking. So maybe he just recycled the phrasing because it sounded nice, or MAYBE he recycled it because he was considering the link between Fingolfin and Ereinion Gilgalad.
UPDATE UPDATE: A few pages later in Beren and Lúthien we get this:
" In that vast shadow once of yore / Fingolfin stood: his shield he bore / with field of heaven's blue and star / of crystal shining pale afar. "
AGAIN the word similarities with the second stanza of TFoGg, but also with the last two lines of the third stanza:
" for into darkness fell his star / in Mordor where the shadows are. "
Well, if you've read this far, thank you for following my conspiracy theory literary analysis. Am I a Gil-galad son of Fingon son of Fingolfin truther? Maybe! Who knows??

On using my art...
I don't mind anything inspired by my art. In fact, please tell me about it! And I don't mind if you use my art for a video, your phone, etc. All I ask for is credit. Just link back to the original work, please, or at least let people know where you got the art from, okay? It's such an awful feeling to realize more people have seen bits and pieces of your art from uncredited steals than from your... actual posted art...
Fun Projects I've Finished
Animatic Trailer for the Ley of Leithian

What does Maedheos fear more Morgoth's touch or the intentions behind his touch?
Angband World Building and Aftermath of Captivity Masterlist
cw: discussion of captivity (non graphic, this focuses mainly on power differences between elves and Ainur and the consequences of any touch when power is unrestrained)
So I’ve discussed some of this before regarding Morgoth’s intentions and the power of the Valar used itself as a weapon against elves, etc
The touch of any of the Ainur is not an insignificant event. With some exceptions, casual or frequent touching between elves and Ainur are rare. The difference in power and form, particularly with the Valar, is profound and it is possible for elves to suffer physical or mental side effects or consequences to their touch. The touch of Ulmo for example can come with the bone deep cold of the ocean depths and a sudden feeling of pressure change, if he is not careful in restraining himself.
Morgoth of course uses no such restraint in Angband. Moreover, after the Silmarils burn him and he loses most of his ability to change forms, his power is stark and unchanneled. He is able to invoke a sense of fear and even madness from his gaze alone, something described as so powerfully harmful, it certainly makes one wonder what actual physical contact would do
I’m taking some of this from the description in The Ley of Leithian which isn’t strictly canon however the scene here, between Morgoth and Húrin, appears in other canon works and is never contradicted in canon either
As I said I’ve talked before about why Morgoth lays hand to Maedhros in any way (though as always feel free to ask more!) and my general thoughts on the matter are that
A, Morgoth was taking out his anger about his own diminished form by using it as a weapon against others and Maedhros specifically as Fëanor’s son, the son of the creator of the Silmarils.
B, Morgoth, more so than the other Valar, enjoys and is heartened by the differences in power between himself and elves and humans
So Maedhros fears both. Morgoth’s touch, even brief and seemingly innocuous, is enough to instill a sense of dread and even to cause physical effects. And the intentions, both when Maedhros understands them and when he doesn’t, are also a source of fear
I hope this answers your question, anon! As always please feel free to ask more!

I finally settled on what to do with this sticker. There are three quotes here. The top one is from the tale of Beren and Luthien from the Silmarillion. "They buried the body of Felagund upon the hill-top of his own isle, and it was clean again; and the green grave of Finrod Finarfin’s son, fairest of all the princes of the Elves, remained inviolate, until the land was changed." Above the heraldry, the opening and closing lines of the battle between Finrod and Sauron from the Ley of Leithian: "He chanted a song of wizardry, ... and Finrod fell before the throne." The bottom half is one quote from Unfinished Tales, spoken by Finrod's sister, Galadriel: "Of Finarfin's children I am the last, but my heart is still proud. What wrong did the Golden house of Finarfin do?" #tolkienjournal #tolkienquotes #finarfin #finrodfelagund #galadriel #unfinishedtales #silmarillion #leyofleithian #tolkien #elvenheraldry (at Simpsonville, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT-BzhUL1XR/?utm_medium=tumblr

I finally found it! This is the post that first introduced me to the Ley of Leithian rock opera. This song is amazing, but I especially enjoy the beginning, with the powerful beat that sets the tone for the rest of the song.
