Review : Superfly (2018)
Tumblr media
While the topic of remakes is a popular one here at DOOMonFILM, this may be our first chance to discuss the subtle differences between a remake and an update.  The difference between taking an old property and redoing it versus taking an old property and updating it for modern times can be a subtle one, but each approach has their own merits and benefits.  It seems Director X and company chose the update road for their latest undertaking, Superfly.
Youngblood Priest (Trevor Jackson) is a young drug dealer on the streets of Atlanta with a reputation for getting ladies and getting money, and doing both while managing to fly under the radar of the authorities.  The times are changing around him, however, and units like the Snow Patrol, a group of hoodlums that wear all white, keep a high profile, and are direct competitors in the drug game, are major concerns for Priest.  One particular member of Snow Patrol, a loose cannon named Juju (Kaalan Walker) has an unfounded vendetta against priest, despite the fact that group leader Q (Big Bank Black) tells him to leave it alone.  After a confrontation between Priest and Juju results in the shooting of an innocent woman, Priest lets his partner Eddie (Jason Mitchell) know that they need to do one last, big push and the leave the game.  Priest lets Eddie in on his plan to undercut Scatter (Michael K. Williams), his connect and mentor, and find out who the main drug connection is.  Priest quickly discovers the Cartel is the main supplier before succeeding in making a direct deal.  With Snow Patrol making the streets hot, increased pressure from the authorities, the Cartel over his head, and Scatter on his back, Priest must do everything in his power to keep his plan in action and leave the madness of the drug game behind.
As an update to the original story, this film certainly more than achieves its goal.  The character names are a one-to-one from the original, but everyone gets a bit of a twist and slightly more depth.  Priest is much more compassionate while still maintaining alpha status; Eddie is still money hungry, but ultimately not at the cost of loyalty; and even Scatter still has active years on him for the 2018 update.  The women in Priest’s life (Georgia, played by Lex Scott Davis, and Cynthia, played by Andrea Londo) have a much more active role than the women in the original film.  Smartly, Director X separates the drug source from the cops in this film, giving Priest a much more formidable series of protagonists to deal with.
Though a modern day update, I do think that the soundtrack will be the only limiting element of the film, long-term... specifically the first half of the film.  The film is relocated to Atlanta, so most of the music is location-appropriate, but the heavy emphasis on trap music may not do the film justice in 20 or 30 years.  With a direction connection to the Dungeon Family (due to the fact that Future was a producer on the film, as well as the artist responsible for the soundtrack), it would’ve been nice to have some Outkast or Goodie Mob thrown in the mix for the purpose of emotional dynamics.  As the film progresses, however, the score and soundtrack mature to match the level of filmmaking and acting taking place.
Speaking of the level of filmmaking, Director X is slowly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with.  His two films thus far are diverse in topic, similar enough in style to be recognizable as one man’s vision, but unique enough from one another to show range.  For Superfly, we find Director X digging back into his bag of music video tricks, with lens flares, blown out lighting, heavily moody lighting and informative color-timing to establish a sleek look and slightly schizophrenic pace to the film.  The cars, fashion and houses are definitely perfectly chosen counterparts to replace the flyness of the original... but the gun game is something else in this film.  I don’t believe that guns in movies have a direct influence on the populous at large, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that this film has some dangerously cool looking guns in it.
Trevor Jackson had big shoes to fill in his role as Youngblood Priest, and I must say he more than stood up to the challenge.  His size and physicality make him a great fit with just the eye test, but his demeanor really sells the performance.  Jason Mitchell brings the same sinister edge to Eddie that Carl Lee did, but with some wonderfully updated humor.  Michael K. Williams turns the role of Scatter into his own, giving us layers and layers to work with as a viewer.  Big Bank Black and Kaalan Walker play the direct threats, and more than stand up to that job with their outlandish attire and attitudes, especially Walker and his irrational hate focused on the Priest character.  Big Boi drops in a bit of humor (and validation) as the mayor of Atlanta.  Lex Scott Davis may end up being the breakout performance of the film, taking what should have been a very limiting role and making it one that the audience could connect to the most.  Jacob Ming-Trent’s update on the Freddie character is worth noting, as well as the actors and actress that portrayed the Cartel family.
I definitely went into this project with more intrigue and curiosity than I did uncertainty about why the project was being made, and I think that open-mindedness helped.  There were aspects that I initially did not like about the film, but upon further reflection, it feels these choices may have been purposefully subversive in nature to deepen the overall experience.  If you find yourself curious, it may be worth your time to take in Superfly on the big screen, because the competition is so stiff this summer that dollars determine a film’s life on the big screen now more than ever.
