It's Jisung's English Composition class. He sits at the farthest back table on his own, tapping away at his laptop as the teacher discusses some concept he couldn't care less about. He hears some ruckus past his airpods, but ignores it in favor of listening to the music that's playing. That is, until, a figure covered in pink and white stands directly behind his screen. It's very obvious that the person is looking at him, but he tries to ignore it hoping that they will just go away.

It's not until the person's hand reaches out and waves in front of his screen that he finally looks up. As his eyes trail up the person's body he slowly realizes who it is. When their eyes meet, it finally clicks. Y/N L/N. The popular girl who is friends with "everybody" and dresses in short, short skirts with thigh highs and her stupid Hello Kitty pendant necklace that falls perfectly between her boobs. It should be my face there.

His eyes move to the top of her head, glancing at the fluffy pink scrunchie that holds her hair together in two pigtails. Then they move lower, catching her shiny eyes that are risen at the edges from her smile. And- oh. Her smile.. The one that is created from those pretty plump lips covered in a pinkish-red tinted gloss. He starts to picture what they would look like wrapped around his-

But then she's tilting her head and mouthing words at him. Oh, fuck that's right. His hands bolt up to his ears, yanking the earbuds out and completely forgetting about the music that bleeds out. He holds them away from his ears and meets her eyes again, almost moaning out loud when she bites her lip bashfully and speaks up again. Her silky sweet voice finally meets his ears and he can feel his dick twitch in his jeans.

"My group was being loud so we got separated for the rest of the semester.. Is that seat taken?" Her short charm-clad acrylic nails catch his attention for a moment as she points to the seat occupied by his bag. Of course it's fucking covered in Sanrio stickers. Hello Kitty stickers being the most of them. Her hair bounces as she turns to him, those pretty lips taking all his attention again as he watches them move with every word. "My name's Y/N L/N. You're... Han! Right?" He nods slowly, no longer trusting his voice in the slightest. How does she know my name?!? I don't even talk to anybody in this class.. "Yeah.. Han Jisung."

She smiles widely, then those nails are moving around in his field of view again. This time her hands go up to her necklace, fiddling with it as she leans back into her chair and her shiny lips part again. "It's nice to finally meet you, by the way. We had statistics together last semester, but we didn't get the chance to talk at all." 

"Oh. You remember that class?" He grimaces and rubs the back of his neck, zoning out after she nods. He suddenly remembered the presentation for the final his group had to do in that class, And he vividly remembers the hard-on he had during it. It was only because of her and that stupid sundress she had on that day. Fuck you mother nature for the summer heat that day..

When her eyes turn to the whiteboard, he looks down at his crotch and rolls his eyes when he sees an evident bulge. The skirt, that was already too short to be appropriate for a place of education, was ridden so far up her thighs that he swears if she just spread her legs even the slightest he could get a glance of her panties. Before he realizes what’s happening, his eyes peek around to make sure nobody is in the neighboring tables. He clears his throat to cover up the noise of his jeans unbuckling and unzipping, and then his hand finally slides into his boxers. It was a tight fit but god was he going to make it work.

He strokes himself slowly, angling his dick upwards in hopes that the sweater would cover up the movements. He looks down for a few seconds and bites his lip, biting back a victorious smile as the sweater does just that. 

Feeling a little more relaxed, he allows his eyes to flutter closed. Immediately images of her flood his mind. People in this community need to get off their purity high horses and realize that everyone experiences regression differently and not everyone will fit in their imaginary box of the perfect regression experience.

I’ve only been active in this community for less than a week, but I’ve already gotten a purity anon clutching their pearls over my interests that aren’t Bluey or Sanrio, literally accusing me of supporting the same trauma I went through all because I enjoy a show?? Learn some media literacy and understand that I can skip past certain scenes that I am in fact made uncomfortable by and still enjoy other parts of a show.

The hypocrisy on display here is almost laughable to me. It’s fine that many regressors like the notoriously foul mouth, r-rated character of Deadpool because it’s popular right now, but I like to watch an (also very popular right now) show for the cool dragons, costumes and a few characters I enjoy but because it has some dark topics suddenly I’m a freak who shouldn’t be allowed in the community?

Literally get over yourselves, you're not “better” than anyone for bullying others, you’re literally acting the same as the trolls I’ve seen harass the community, just doing it in a more disgusting way. Acting like you care, like you’re just a concerned member of the community when you really remind me more of my manipulative abusers.

It’s baffling to me that in a community of people just trying to heal, you’re willing to hold others back just because they don’t match your idea of a perfect regressor.

Anyways, shoutout to the few friends I’ve already made, (esp @bunnelbaby, you rock!!) the cool people with amazing skill, interests and seemingly infinite kindness, you’re the majority of the community I’m glad to have already encountered. And ofc shoutout to the other regressors like me, those who enjoy adult-targeted media and such, you’re perfectly valid and I’m sure a very cool person as well!!

Pochacco came yesterday! I washed his clothes before dressing him just to be safe, because his clothes are a little darker than the other Sanrio outfits I have. I wouldn't want him to get stained! A little dye did leech into the water when I washed and soaked them, so I'm glad I took that precaution.

Pochacco is super cute and fluffy, and his safety eyes and nose give him such a cute expression! His ears are nice and floppy, and he's a good shape for hugging. The BaB body type suits him well! I do wish he had his little paw pads, but they gotta have the logo so it's not surprising that he doesn't have the beans.

Not sure if it's because he's a less popular character or if it's because BaB is actually making enough to keep up with demand, but it's nice to see that he didn't sell out in like a day and is even in stores now! Hopefully BaB continues this trend of anticipated releases being well-stocked.

I did a little doodle of Pochacco on a skateboard! I experimented with a different pen brush this time, it's a little wonky here and there but I think it's cute anyway!

Speaking of Sanrio x TWST and Vil 👀 Hello Kitty’s standard colors (white, red, blue, yellow) remind me a lot of Neige’s colors. Her height and weight are even read in terms of apples (Kitty is 5 apples tall and weighs 3 apples)!! And given that Hello Kitty is the most popular Sanrio character, just like how Neige is the “most beautiful/popular” idol… I kind of want to see Vil absolutely SEETHE over the Neige-Hello Kitty power duo 😂 (but being the professional that he is, Vil would have to continue to casually smile and wave to the cameras—)

Or maybe Idia would snatch up Hello Kitty for himself since he likes cats??? cbsvjwcnks It might be funny to see Leona having to deal with a fellow cat that’s so kind and cheery so basically the opposite of him. “I’m surrounded by idiots,” Leona groans, a cutesy pastel-colored Sanrio character hanging off of each of his limbs.

Thinking about male Sanrio characters

Some people seem to really dislike Cinnamoroll because he is so popular. I've seen loads of people say they don't want him to win the Sanrio ranking because he always wins. There has also been many supporters of Cinnamoroll defending him as if he's a real perosn lol. Sanrio trends are interesting to look into. Has anyone else noticed that the three most popular characters at the moment seem to be the boy characters? (Pompompurin, Pochacco and Cinnamoroll). Maybe this is because of Hapidanbui, which put some of these characters into the limelight a little bit more in 2020. Even Hangyodon has reaped the benefits of that.

Boy Sanrio characters are interesting because they tend to have strange aesthetics. The girl characters are put in pretty dresses, hair bows etc. and the boys have to match their cuteness with a masculine equivalent, which doesn't always exist. The concept of masculinity isn't really cohesive with a cutesy aesthetic. Shouldn't these male characters be less cute intrinsically? Perhaps I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but I think it's interesting how these characters are made to skirt the lines of the gender binary for seemingly no reason.

There isn't an equivalent for Hapidanbui for the female characters. Perhaps the idea was that the boy characters need it more because they are less successful. I guess that's true to the average person. Most average people may only know Hello Kitty/My Melody/Kuromi, but Sanrio fans tend to prefer Cinnamoroll/Pompompurin/Pochacco. This is especially evident in the Sanrio ranking. Since 2015 Cinnamoroll has taken the top spot (except for in 2019 when Hello Kitty inexplicably got it, but he came second)

Sanrio fans being interested in boys and maleness is not lost on the Sanrio company. Remember the anime about the Sanrio Boys? I'm pretty sure it's still going actually. It's about cute anime boys that love Sanrio, and it's clearly aimed at a teen girl audience.

Also it's worth noting that the base male characters tend to be simpler in design. They tend not to have accessories the way that the female characters do. (Hello Kitty has a bow and overalls, My Melo has her weird hat with a design on it, so does Kuromi, but Cinnamoroll and Pochacco are naked. Pompom has his little hat but it's plain.)

It's just wild to me that even these little creatures cannot escape the gender roles of society.

Are Sanrio fans more inclined to like male characters? Is it just a novelty to see maleness depicted in a cutesy way, that is usually exclusive to girls? Do Sanrio designers just put more effort to make boy characters cuter? Are boy characters more simple? Does their simplicity make them more cute? Am I thinking too much about this?

To be fair though, there is a new Sanrio character that came 5th in the New Kawaii Project named Harenochi Nyua that is stated to be neither a boy or a girl. Which is really cool!

mascot notes (i used precure mascots and jewelpets [sanrio supports genocide which i shouldnt have 2 explain Why That's Bad, but im simply using them references for if/when i draw or design them] for references. maybe i'll add pokemon like fennekin or buneary later)

lifty and shifty share a mascot and are a duo at the start because theyre together when they meet the mascot - maybe other characters will also share a mascot and be a team at the start but i've only really thought about the mains. i also didn't want to use the same animal as their htf counterpart so i kinda started winging it

so far...

lifty and shifty's mascot will be a fox, bc foxes are often associated with slyness and cunningness. au where they're tom nook and redd's adoptive sons and after their dad's divorced- i'm joking i'm joking. i've contemplated naming him lucky, but who knows if i'll stick with that. dont have any real personality notes though, but obviously he's willing to bribe them.

splendid's mascot will be a dog. specifically a dig with longer floppy ears. i dont know why, but him with a puppy resonated with me i also really miss my beloved hershey, and just having a pet in general. while they dont have a name or a gender yet, i'm imaging them to be a very loyal type who cheers everyone on and, when there's no fighting evil to be done, loves to play. if i go the high school route (or maybe even college route...) they are vety bad about accidentally causing disruptions and everything thinks that the stress of being a model student is making splendid lose his mind.

with splendont and flippy, i just chose animals i liked and are popular for cute magical animal characters. splendont is getting a kitty. personality-wise i'm not sure what i'll go for. maybe a stubborn and impulsive type that tends to push his buttons. or a graceful and calculated cat that is stoic and cold at first but shows a true warm heart as they grow close to others. the forner would have a lot of arguing, the latter would let them both bond over being similar, as well as let splendont show a slightly less confident kitty that they are worthy and kind despite taking time to warm up to others, that they aren't alone.

for flippy i chose a bunny bc i like bnunies. hippity hoppity. this bunny i think would be the most gentle, caring sweetheart ever - but if you hurt their fruends, they'll stop at nothing to get revenge. maybe a sad backstory with a friend dying due to the big bad, and wanting to help to stop the villains as an act of revenge, despite knowing it wont bring back their friend. thus would strengthen flippy's resolve as a hero - fliqpy was the one that wanted to do it for the most part, and flippy was nervous about it (canonically he Did join the army [though he probably wouldn't have in this au] but i think weird magical shenanigans are a lil more concerning bc a talking rabbit comes out of nowhere and tells you to magically transform and fight monsters, and while you do want to help and save people and fight for whats right, this weird magical business is weird and comcerning) especially because bunny seems so sweet and kind. fliqpy thinks revenge seeking is cool and as long as he gets to keep beating up monsters, he'll help bunny avenge their friend.

next i gotta think of transformation trinkets... probably a watch like the yes precure 5 bc im basic. - Erased (manga/anime): a disillusioned mangaka has a supernatural ability that involuntarily sends him back in time in order to prevent tragedies. when tragedy strikes close to him, hes sent back to investigate a series of murders that happened when he was in 5th grade. cws for mentions of pedophilia, child abuse and child death in both versions, but the manga has more explicit sexual assault and suicide

- The Lost Boys (movie): two brothers and their mother move to a beach town that is super infested with 80s biker vampires. no(?) cws really? i mean its kind of a horror movie by virtue of vampires but its not like super violent or anything. its kinda just campy

- Bang Bang You’re Dead (movie): following a student making a false bomb threat, a theater teacher decides to cast him in a play about a school shooting, much to the disdain of the rest of the community. its basically about a kid escaping the mentality of violence through theater and it made me cry. cws for an (attempted) school shooting, uh, you know. that kinda shit. but this one has a happy ending actually i promise

- Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (movie): BARELY a plot. its like a bunch of 1960s french people falling in love surrounding a music festival? its mostly just pretty looking. its also a musical. no cws! that i can remember at least

- Beryl and Sapphire (donghua): a series of alternate universe vignettes of the characters beryl and sapphire! sometimes theyre boys, sometimes theyre girls, sometimes theyre rivals, but theyre mostly in love with each other :) some of the episodes are angsty/have death but its mostly lighthearted!

- HOPEUROKAY (music): a duo of two trans people makin cool electronic music! electropop i guess?? digicore?? genres are fake but their music fucks. and they have like 500 monthly listeners. fave songs: ghostinthecorner, day 400, insight, pink ps2

- Gezebelle Gaburgably (music): do you LOVE electronic incelcore? do you wish that it was made by a woman so you felt less bad for liking it? boy do i have the gal for you. fave songs: quarter pounder, death by dodgeball, heads up, sanrio girl

- Fairy Idol Kanon (manga): a kids manga about three girls on their journey to become idols with the help of a fairy princess! meanwhile, they must also use the power of song to save the fairy realm from the dark faires!

- What Happens Next (webcomic): a trans guy who was an accessory to murder as a teenager has to navigate the rest of his life. follows both him and the other affected parties, through the lens of modern day internet culture. cws for WHOOH BOY. (child) death, gore, trauma, transphobia, abuse, ableism, self harm. like everything basically. but the comic also provides cws itself

- SoraMafuUraSaka (music): a four person utaite group made of soraru, mafumafu, uratanuki, and tonari no sakata! they make yearly videogame themed songs together, as well as each being just like. independent artists in their own right. if you've seen the rpg animation meme, that songs by them! my personal fave of theirs is noryoku hikitsugi de otome game no sekai ni tenseishitaken ni tsuite, though i also like their most recent one (jinsei muri game)!

- Tonari no JK (The Highschool Girl Next to Me) by Konori feat. GUMI: ok yeah the lyrics might be a little questionable but it SLAPS.... konori's metal vocals combined with gumi's melody combined with the cheery backing music... its just perfect. and "watashi wa watashi, ne! "ne"?! JANEE YOOOOOO" is like the best part of any song ever

- A Favor House Atlantic by Coheed and Cambria: so this is off of a concept album, apparently, which i haven't actually fully listened to, so i dunno what this song's actually about, but it IS really good. it's got that high-pitched male pop punk vocals (esp on the line "good eye sniper") and it reminds me of vrisrezi like a lot

- Chuis Bo! by PZK: do you like early 2010s french dance pop. would you like to. Les Filles Adorent and Ce Matin Va Etre une Pure Soiree are also bangers

- My Magical Romance by Sophie's Magic Diary: Sophie's Magic Diary is actually a really cool series of animated shorts about a girl with a crush and her puppy fairy familiar thing who tries to help her woo him. hilarity ensues. my magical romance is an original song made by the artist to accompany the story! its a banger

- Tamara is a Punk by The Queers: a punk jam about having unrequired feelings for a girl named tamara! got into this song cause my mutual made ocs based off of it.

Oki I'll try to explain as best I can cause its like 3am where I am..

Basically BAB is a shady company. In the past they've supported organizations such as Autism Speaks (they've since ended that partnership but it took a lot of convincing from customers for then to do so, and I think the Autism Speaks website still sells the bear BAB created for them) BAB also notorious for poor management when it comes to new bear releases and certain promotions.

A good and recent example is the launch of the new cinnamoroll bear. There wasn't an announcement made for the plush at first, it was simply put up on the website. And by the time the Twitter account announced the release, cinnamoroll had already sold out (I believe within a couple of hours of the release). The company did nothing to prevent scalpers from buying up 10+ bears at a time. I also heard that the site was acting wonky because of the influx of traffic due to the cinnamoroll bear. BAB knows how popular Sanrio characters are, cinnamoroll has literally been voted most popular multiple years in a row. They should have prepared for the wave of customers who'd come rushing in for it, although I guess you could simply call it an oversight on their part.

An example of a poorly executed promotion would be that "pay your age" sale they had a couple years back (in like, 2016 I believe?) Hundreds of people with young children lined up at their local BABW in the summer heat, only to be told the promotion had been canceled because they once again didn't prepare for such a massive turn out. On the slightly less Yikes side, the company's got an "after dark" section on the website which is mostly cheeky stuff that only borderlines adult themes, and also features bears holding adult beverages. Which isn't the worst thing I guess. Its cool they're catering to their aduld market, but its not the most appropriate thing to have on a site that kids can easily access (does the site make you put in your date of birth to get on that part of it? I've never checked, but if not then they should at least do that)

Finally, like many retail stores, BAB treats its staff poorly. The company almost literally makes employees do a song and dance for customers while putting pressure on sales performances, all for minimum wage or just barely above. This post here details some of the treatment workers face, and I believe it also links to a subreddit for BAB employees

I hope this is a good answer, friend. Also I just wanna say I've got nothing against people who buy from BAB. If its something you love then enjoy it. But I personally cannot look past these things, and so I choose to enjoy purchasing my own bears from second hand sources.

Misconceptions About Rebecca Bonbon

As the only RBB blogger I know and hyperfixated since 7, I feel like I'm pretty qualified to explain and clear up some misconceptions about Rebecca Bonbon.

Rebecca Bonbon is NOT Sanrio and NEVER HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE COMPANY!: This one is the one that bothers me the most. The Build-a-Bear wiki says she's a "Sanrio friend," TikTokers call her "Sanrio adjacent," etc. The Only Reason people think this is because her designer, Yuko Shimizu, designed the original 1973 Hello Kitty. For reference, she worked there 51 years ago. Shimizu has NOT designed for them since. I believe many people do this association for clicks and views, but Shimizu hasn't associated herself with Sanrio since she quit. She does not own any rights to the original Hello Kitty. From what I understand, legally, she cannot advertise herself as the "designer of Hello Kitty" either, because it hasn't been in RBB's advertising in 10+ years. Only interviewers frame her this way.

Rebecca Bonbon Is Not Popular, and Never Has Been: People with fond memories may think she was super popular, but she wasn't. Nobody I have met remember her, and very few have any physical merchandise of hers. Much of her products are physical lost media.

Rebecca Bonbon Products Are STILL MADE TODAY: No, you having a product of hers with tags isn't special. Her products are still being made and sold in Asia and South America -- which is a large part of the world.

Rebecca Bonbon Is NOT a CAT!: I don't know why so many people think this -- even my tattoo artist thought RBB was a cat (until I told him otherwise), and even Jennette McCurdy mis-remembers her as a cat in her memoir. I can't blame McCurdy, considering it was a turbulent part of her life, but apparently she is not the only person who remembers RBB as a cat. I think it was because of the "Sanrio adjacent" marketing and interviewing that made everyone remember her as a cat.

Crown Creative Is NOT SANRIO!: Crown Creative (the company that owns RBB) has NEVER been associated with Sanrio. Again, just because they hired an ex-Sanrio artist, does not mean they are associated with Sanrio. Many of their characters would not ever be associated with Sanrio (i.e. Pussy Deluxe). Crown Creative is a more refined, less kawaii-focused brand.

Hey Kiks! I had sent this to someone else about the book, but I thought I’d send this to you as well, since I know you have some feelings about it, and maybe it could make you or some of your followers feel a bit better?

It’s basically adding context for those who may not understand licensing when it comes to the ST books. Licensing, for anyone who doesn’t know, is basically when you acquire the rights for a certain amount of time to use the intellectual property of company to create media and/or products for a specific project. For Ex Hello Kitty/Sanrio. Your company wants to make notebooks using Hello Kitty characters but you don’t own the copyright, so you license the rights from Sanrio to specifically make notebooks. Same with movies based on video games, they license the rights from video game companies to make those movies. Same with the ST books, the publishers don’t own the rights, so they license the name and likeness of characters owned by Stranger things/Netflix to write their own stories. From this point on, the books can be about anything, but from what I’ve seen of the ST books, they try to not interfere too much with canon(though the various books tend to both contradict each other and the show). At the end of the day, the purpose of licensing in this way is essentially to generate extra income and as a form of cross-promotion/to increase visibility.

There seems to be some confusion around this, since the staff writer contributed to the writing for S4 and Eddie to some capacity. I think some people may be a belief that this book was handled a different way than the other, but it was licensed by the publisher the same way the other novels are, it wasn’t a special partnership of any sort. And staff writers have been involved with the creation of the other books, for example Hoppers book. That author worked with Paul Dichter, a staff writer, for the creation of it. While no one from the ST team has made statements on Eddies book, it’s been stated that some of the books(rebel robin and Lucas’s book for example) aren’t considered canon.

Additionally in terms of Paige, I actually liked Paige’s character and felt for her, but people were confused about what a small role she ended up playing. it’s possible that a romantic interest was something that was not originally planned for but was at some point required from those that are higher up to include in the novel, to appeal to a YA audience. Not saying this is was what happened, but it’s possible. If this was the case it could be that those involved in the creation of the book tried to include Paige in the least intrusive way possible romantically so as to not put off readers. Or maybe Paige was intended to be a romantic interest in the beginning. The point is, especially with a more commercial project like one, where Eddie’s likeness and popularity is being capitalized to generate profit, the process isn’t straightforward, it’s guaranteed that there were many changes in the process and hands in the pot. From someone who is in the profession - there zero chance the writer thought of a plot and then saw that original plot through more or less unchanged to the end, without copious amounts of“feedback” from higher ups/stakeholders etc.

I think for those that want to fold the content of the book into their own HC and lore, the book has plenty to offer and had very background stories. But if thinking of licensed projects from more of a business perspective helps those that want a bit of mental separation, maybe this would help. Think of movies based off video games - any characters, plot points, etc those movies might add, aren’t typically considered canon. Viewing of FOI as a multiverse version of Eddie is totally valid :)

Thank you so, so much for shedding some light on the matter of canon! It definitely helps to understand the process of creation of this kind of project 😅 And it's nice to know that both perspectives on whether it's canon or not are equally valid.

I finally made it to the Japanese market near school today. Schools a hike for me so I spent the entire summer not going (lacked motivation)

Anyway, they were running a Japanese style lottery for sanrio prizes that were summer themed and the Pompom Purin figure caught my eye. So I bought a ticket. While the whole thing was going on I noticed there were plushies and was like "I think I would love one of them"

Anyway, the matched my prize number with the item. I probably surprised the guy because my face lit up because as soon as I saw his goofy little face I knew it was Hangyodon plush and I know he's a less popular character so I think the guy was expecting disappointment.

Love this dude and I might try again next week.

May 29th — Shibuya, Harajuku, and Meiji Shrine

We started the day with another delicious Japanese breakfast (so many macros) and rode the Ginza line all the way to Shibuya. It was a rainy day, and I decided to go for a rain coat, which was a pretty horrible idea with all the humidity. I felt like I was back in Florida for a minute. Shibuya station had some amazing architecture that I really enjoyed, and of course, seeing the crossing was amazing. It really has a similar atmosphere to Times square, but a little more organized and open. The hachiko statue was adorable. In Shibuya, we popped into the 109 department store, but, after climbing all 7 levels, found out that it only had women’s clothes, which was a bummer. After that, we walked around to a few more shops, and I visited a record store with a pretty crazy selection of American music, though none of the Japanese bands I was looking for. From there, we went on to Harajuku. Me and Sebastian went into a few thrifts there, which were curated nicely, but I didn’t find them especially different from American thrifts— it seems the popular thrifted brands are the same in both places (or maybe the shop just caters to tourists). Vishnu and I ate at a western restaurant, which served Chicken and Waffles— a strange thing to eat in the middle of Tokyo, but pretty tasty nonetheless. After Harajuku, we took a walk to Meiji shrine (passing an amazing stadium from the 1964 Tokyo olympics), a peaceful and beautiful place, especially on a rainy day. The sheer size of the property was amazing in the middle of such a big city, and the canopy of bright green leaves above the wide path lined by trees was beautiful. I am quickly finding out that my favorite thing about Tokyo is the presence of beautiful nature in a sprawling metropolis. Actually, on the walk home from the hotel, I found another pretty shrine to Confucius, which was totally empty. At the hotel, I again was totally drained, and quickly collapsed at about 7:00 pm.

Academic Reflection

Wink on Pink was a pretty fascinating reading, but not exactly a surprising one. A lot of my female friends are pretty into Sanrio, so I’ve gotten familiar with all the characters and their prevalence in feminine culture in the US. It was really interesting to think about the idea of the infantilization of Japanese culture that is associated with this character. Certainly, I have seen many people in the west with this childish perception of Japan. The idea of soft power was also really interesting, especially considering the date of this article. As a young person, I know that, since the article's publication, Japan’s soft power over youth culture has grown tremendously. The prevalence of Sanrio in Japan has been obvious in many places (the massive Hello Kitty store in the Skytree, for one) but especially in Harajuku, which boasted a whole Pompompurin cafe. I did not see any Lolita fashion, though.

The second reading made me appreciate just how impactful the Meiji emperor was in changing Japan into a modern nation. That the government would construct not only a large shrine, but reserve a massive forest in the heart of Tokyo in his honor (featuring wine donations from France, no less) goes to show the reverence he receives. Seeing the shrine in person really drove this home.
