Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Leonard Nimoy guest stars in "The Tiburcio Mendez Story," episode 26 of the fourth season of Wagon Train (original air date March 22, 1961). If you're playing along at home, you probably remember that Gene Roddenberry originally pitched Star Trek to the studio as “Wagon Train to the stars.”

Nimoy plays Joachin Delgado, the protégé and future son-in-law of the titular character. Mendez is the leader of a ragtag group of Californios who were displaced fifteen years earlier when the United States annexed California at the end of the Mexican-American War, and the Gold Rush brought a wave of prospectors and settlers west into the new territory. They've been living rough in the hills at the edge of the desert and robbing the occasional wagon train, partly to survive and partly to try to stem the tide of Anglo settlers.

A magistrate traveling with the wagon train believes he can get the group's original land grants restored to them if the individual members who actively committed the robberies agree to turn themselves in and stand trial. Seeing how his people, especially the children born in exile, are suffering from the harsh life in hiding, Mendez agrees to the plan. But the younger men, led by the hot-headed Delgado, resolve to stay and keep fighting.

Armed conflict breaks out between the two sides, and Mendez is fatally wounded. In tears at the deathbed of his surrogate father, Delgado promises to take Mendez's place as leader of the reunited group and see them back to California to reclaim their land.

Other Trek Connections:

This episode was written by Gene L. Coon, one of the Founding Fathers of Star Trek. He wrote or co-wrote 13 episodes of The Original Series and produced 33. Working closely with Roddenberry and Justman, he introduced such elements as as the Klingons, the United Federation of Planets, and the Prime Directive into the Trek lore.

Tiburcio Mendez is played by Nehemiah Persoff, who also played the delightfully bitchy Palor Toff in the Next Generation episode “The Most Toys.”

Jake observes Dagger asking himself how he can fit in this group of good people:

Natasha is a little Mav, good, stubborn and strong woman who not let anybody to tell her what to do and how, tell her to not doing something and she will do it and perfectly.

Bob, the silent man who seems a little brother to protect but has a fire that warm people and burn who tries to put him (or one of his friend) down.

Javy has the capacity to make people calm, is the peace in every storm, everytime present for his friends with a good advices for all. A solid and silence presence.

Reuben and Mickey are the silly duo: the first one with his bet (who lost almost always) and his humor can make laugh everyone and Fanboy with his comment tease people without pity. But both can be serious and a perfect shoulder to rely on.

And Bradley... Bradley is the Sun: people gravitate towards him, he is warm and shining, a good leader for the team. Someone who know always what to do and say even if sometime he doubt about his capacity.

Naturally Flyboy adore them, since the first meet, the old pilots acted as uncles and dads for everyone.

But Jake dont belive he deserve it... They dont see the true him, only a mask for hiding how bad he is. They can know about his reputation in marine but not his past did of drugs and alcohol addiction. He is so ashamed about it, he was so weak to use drugs and alcohol for escape from his life.

Jake pretends, pretending to fit in the group, nobody know about the addiction, so is safe and can trick everybody to like him.

But someone know about Jake's past: Cain, who is petty about the succes of Mission and want revenge destroing the squad using Jake. So in the first social event of Marine the admiral tell everything.

Jake runs away, too afraid to face their delusion, until he is too tired and stop in a little beach. The blonde is not aware how much stay there.

"Slider and Goose, both, joined Marine for avoiding jail because drugs. Wolf started drink much after Top Gun, we found out thanks to Viper, who helped him to be sober again. In these years we all help Wolf and Slider to stay sober and clean... You dont know how much time Mav sleep in the couch because Sli didnt want to be alone, or how many time we reunite in Hollywood and Wolf house to be sure he cant drink alcohol.

Kiddo, nobody consider you less because your past, we all love you and yes you, even now we know. We love you si much, the only reason neither Slider, Wolf or Mav punch Cain in his face is because Little Goose did it first. We all are worried about you, we were afraid that you would do something bad... Something bad and lost you forever, we separated to search you, luckily, you are in my favorite place... But now come home, please, let your family to take care of you and show how much important are you for all us"

Jake cry so much that night, as never before, but happy to be with his family.

Top Gun Ring Designs

So everyone knows I'm a Top Gun (Maverick) Fanboy and well

My current ADHD hyperfixation is Right Angled Weave Ring making, and so...

I made ring designs for my favorite characters' helmets!

Just as I had designed bracelets when I first got my seed beads, I had to design rings when I re-got into my seed beads!

Uhhhhh feel free to use if you make rings. I'm gonna make them this week, and I hope to do at least one a day.
