Never over how little chill Lab Rats had. They did not hesitate to threaten the lives of kids and make their family members fully believe they’d been killed. Multiple characters flatline at some point. Space Colony alone has three main characters nearly die, an entire colony’s lives are at stake and then they also get brainwashed along with half of the family, the WHOLE PLANET EARTH was gonna get wiped out with a missile, and our leads actually kill a man. Onscreen. Said man could be a bullet point on his own because this dude never once felt like he was written for a kids’ show. A cold, heartless, violent criminal who created an army of child soldiers whose autonomy he completely violated by controlling them and who literally Force chokes multiple people onscreen like Darth Vader and was responsible for more than one occasion of characters ending up in the emergency room. A teenage boy was crushed by a cement beam and they outright reference his blood getting everywhere and he could have lost an arm if not for his step-uncle the reformed criminal performing an illegal operation to save it. The dad was literally actively dying and would have died had aforementioned teenage boy not given him his own life energy, which then started to kill him in turn. There are multiple instances of teenage kids having to run from the government who would lock them up and separate them and do tests on them. The reason the bionic siblings exist in the first place is because their bio-dad/uncle was gonna rent them out as weapons to help people commit crime. Like. Straight up human trafficking. Android children die. You get to see a hand sticking out of the rubble. A teenager gets trapped in an avalanche. Their home gets blown up. Things get more and more intense as the show goes on but there’s insane stuff the whole time even in lighthearted episodes. A teenager is exposed to a toxic chemical and loses the function of all of her limbs. Another one nearly gets sent to die at the bottom of the ocean. One of them always has to keep his anger in check because he has a Hulk-like second personality that can get triggered and attack people. The dad had so many terrible things happen to him that I never trusted that they wouldn’t actually kill him one day. In only the 11th episode of the series an older version of the step-brother comes back in time to prevent the bionic siblings from going on a mission that will kill them; he comes from a timeline where his siblings are dead, and their dad has been wallowing in grief spending years trying to crack time travel to undo it. The dad and brother are shown the footage of their kids/siblings being crushed to death and the present version of the brother ends up preventing it by shoving them out of the way but nearly dying himself. Even on day one in the dang pilot the siblings all could have died in a trash compactor. This show aired on Disney.

Something I’ve always liked about Lab Rats, even back when it first aired, is how untraditional the family structure is. Not only is the family a mixed race, but is also blended family.
Once you add the idea of Donald being the biological uncle of Adam, Bree, and Chase it doesn’t take away from Donald being the father figure to the trio and they don’t start calling Douglas ‘Dad’. Donald raised them. Douglas even moves in and he’s more like uncle to Leo and the trio despite being the biological father. Going even further, Donald is father figure to Leo yet Leo never calls him dad. In fact, the trio doesn’t call him dad either. Still it’s very clear that Donald is the father figure.
What is even more interesting is how quickly Leo and the trio accept each other as siblings. It’s never step-siblings or adopted siblings, it’s always brothers and sister. This happens in like episode 2. The fact that Leo and trio are siblings are never questioned by anyone. It’s just accepted, even the villains.
Tasha from what we see from the show is quick to accept Adam, Bree, and Chase as members of the family. She even seems to pretty okay with Douglas. Granted, she never really interacts with Douglas, but we are never given any reason to think she has any issue with Douglas.
I think Daniel even adds another layer to this messy family. He’s sibling no one knew about, but calls Douglas ‘dad’. It always felt to me as someone trying really hard to fit in when calls Douglas ‘dad’. It’s implied that Daniel has an adopted family that he is very close with. Still, everyone just accepts Daniel as family right away. Daniel is interesting, unexplored, and underdeveloped part of the show.
The only person who has an Dooley-Davenport Family as unit is Rose Dooley aka Leo’s grandma/Tasha’s mom. She doesn’t like Donald all that much and seemed a little freaked out by Adam, Bree, and Chase. She never interacted with Douglas as far as I remember(correct me if I’m wrong). The narrative of the show frames this as wrong point of view. Rose is always has to learn the lesson that Donald and the trio are family and good for Tasha and Leo.
The Dooley-Davenport family is messy and confusing from an outsider’s point of view. There are tons of people in real life with confusing family structures like this. Some people are raised by grandparents or uncles or family friends. Sometimes, people can be close to cousins like they are siblings. Families are messy, but that’s okay as long as there is love. That’s really why I’ve always loved the Dooley-Davenport family it’s messy and non-traditional like so many people’s in real life.

Why are their pants so ugly lmao
Leo has a D necklace for Dooley to match with the letter thing. Yeah Daniel still exists but he’s an android in my Au so he and Marcus have their own sibling thing. Necklaces are based on fridge magnet letters lmao ( because they’re “fancy appliances”… get it. I’m a jeanis >:D)
Tumblr media
I hate drawing them, it’s so hard to be consistent and it drives me crazy, I gotta work on Leo’s face more… don’t mind Adam’s figure that’s what it looked like in the ref i promise
I’m too tired to yap about my Au rn, ask me about it
My suit designs are so complicated to draw why’d I do this to myself…
Tumblr media
I didn’t do Leo’s full mission suit but wtv I lowkey am sleepy

in the first lab rats episode, Tasha is seriously disturbed when Adam, Bree, and Chase are first introduced. but it IS NOT because they're bionic. she's uncomfortable because there are three teenagers who have never left this lab in her basement. Her husband never mentioned them and probably wouldn't have if Leo hadn't found them. also, davenport doesn't acknowledge them as human, which is why it's so easy for him to dismiss the kids. Tasha is disturbed because these kids are trapped in this room, sleep in tubes, eat pellets, and only have one purpose and no freedom. within two or three days after meeting the kids, Tasha is ready to help Bree get ready for a party, reminded Davenport that they are teenagers, and told the kids to be safe and stay warm at Facility X. This woman saw these kids as growing teenagers in ~3 days, sooner than Davenport did in ~15 years

My friends and I are making fun power points for each other and I chose our beloved shows but I need some help.
What are some scenes from all 3 shows that are totally played for laughs but if you actually think about what is happening it's super fucked up? Or even just lore drops that have horrific implications.
Ex: Marcus telling Douglas "you were my creator and you left me to die" and Douglas responding "Well I didn't think you would come back".
Or Kaz's abusive relationship with Spark that no one addresses.
Please and thank you (if you could put the episode that would be fantastic but not mandatory)

So I’ve been rewatching Lab Rats and thought of this idea I had a couple years ago (Bionic Island spoilers)
What if they committed to killing Chase in Bionic Action Hero? No fake out, no android switch. Chase is dead, and Giselle killed him
Imagine the aftermath of that
Adam’s guilt over never telling his little brother he loved him, all the years he spent picking on him and teasing him. The rage he’d feel toward Giselle for taking Chase away, wanting to make her pay, make her hurt
Bree trying to keep up a happy face for the sake of her brothers but hurting so much on the inside because for once…she wasn’t fast enough. Maybe she adapts some of Chase’s wardrobe into her own- one of his flannels, an old shirt or accessory…just wanting to feel close to her brother again
Leo possibly being in denial or trying to help Adam in his bloodlust. Tinkering with inventions or going even harder on the training. Maybe that’s when he gets bumped up to mentor, taking over Chase’s group and hating it because he felt like a replacement, like Chase was being erased
Donald throwing himself into his work. Never leaving the lab back in Mission Creek, making Tasha worry, only talking to Eddy or whatever. Chase was his son, his partner, the only person he could really connect to as an intellectual…now the lab felt empty, going back to the island was an impossible task. Staring at Chase’s empty capsule, knowing it would never be occupied again
Even Douglas. For all their fighting, Chase was still his son too. His own son was killed by the woman he had held so much love for so long. The guilt of letting his unrequited love cloud his judgment, resulting in Chase getting killed and wishing so, so badly that he could turn back time and change things. But he can’t…his son is dead…and he never even got to act like his father
TLDR: If Disney writers weren’t pussies, we could’ve had a BANGER final season of Lab Rats that fit the mature narratives they clearly put more care into
