After reading SOTR, it was so refreshing and heartbreaking to read from the point of view of a character who loves so openly. Haymitch bleeds love everywhere he goes; not just for the obvious people like Lenore Dove, or Sid and Ma, but for everyone.

His complete and utter adoration of Lenore Dove? How her flaws, her recklessness and impulsiveness just makes him love her all the more. How he can’t always keep up with her, but he doesn’t resent her for it, just tries his best to and loves her when he can’t understand. The contrast between Snow wanting to control Lucy Gray, even going so far as to say that he wishes she was back in the Arena so he could know where she was, and Haymitch wanting nothing more for Lenore Dove than to be free, even trying to tell Lenore Dove to move on from him when he dies in the Arena.

The way Haymitch expresses such adoration for Hattie, how he admires her hard work and hugs her when she gives him his birthday gift. How he tries to protect her during the Interviews.

Haymitch’s love for his family; how he finds them annoying sometimes, but he loves them. He ruffles Sid’s hair and takes on the role of his father, how he lets Sid drag him out on a clear night to look up at the stars. He hugs his Ma and speaks of her with admiration for her work, even as he’s just as annoyed by her work ethic.

Louella McCoy, who crushed on Haymitch for a week, and it just endeared her to him, made him fiercely protective of her. He never looked down on her for being childish, and he did everything in his power to get justice for her.

Lou Lou, whom he despised at first, only to love her anyways. He didn’t even know her real name, didn’t know anything about her except that she was from Eleven and that she was recording what they were saying, but he loved her anyways because he can’t help it. It spills out of him. He protected her and tried to make her death quick, tried to get justice for what happened to her just as much as he did Louella.

Wyatt, Maysilee, and Effie are my favorite examples of how Haymitch sees the flaws in people, but loves them anyways, embraces them even. Wyatt Callow, who he started by resenting him for his father’s gambling practices, only to grow to love Wyatt for his quick wit, then to mourn him when he was killed on the first day. Maysilee Donner who was spoiled and mean in his eyes, yet he could still see her rebellious and determined nature, her kindness for the other Tributes as she wove their tokens, and he held her hand as she died, cementing her in his mind as his sister. Effie Trinket, who despite her Capitol upbringing, despite her parroting Capitol propaganda lines, Haymitch can’t help but notice her empathy and kindness, and she becomes the only one who can seem to care for him after his Games.

Every single Tribute that he adopted as his own, his flock of doves. He never once thought about winning over any of them, choosing instead to do everything in his power to protect them. He kept the fire running and made nightlights for the young Tributes who feared the dark. He tried to play it cool when meeting with Amphert, but when Amphert hugs him, he just drops the act and hugs him right back. He stayed with Wellie and helped to feed her the best he could, reassuring her the whole time and strategizing how he was going to make her the Victor. He blamed himself for every one of their deaths.

Fuck, even the rabbits in the Arena he becomes fond of. He viewed them as allies and felt guilty when he had to use them to determine what was poisoned.

Haymitch Abernathy loves hard and fast. And that’s what Snow took; his ability to love. He trapped Haymitch into the rascal persona he had put on for the Games. The message he sent with Lenore Dove and Ma and Sid and every single Tribute who Haymitch couldn’t save, was that he would kill anyone Haymitch loved. So he drove people away from him. Forced distance between him and the District Twelve tributes. I think that didn’t even stop him from loving them too, only to watch them killed in the Arena. A yearly reminder of that message.

I hope after the revolution, Haymitch felt free to love without fear again.

Birds hold so much symbolism in the Hunger Games. There’s mockingjays and doves and geese and ducks and canaries and in almost every way they represent something good or positive or rebellious or hopeful.

So there is something incredibly horrific about Maysilee Donner- the original reluctant owner of the mockingjay pin, the owner of a caged canary, who was hated by the original owner of the geese (the dove herself)- being killed by birds the color of the bubblegum she never wanted to sell.

What if when season 2 starts, we get a cut away between Annabel being at the mercy of the Wild Hunt, desperately hoping that somehow Lenore will come for her. That she will come to her rescue like she’s done before. That she will somehow make the impossible possible once again from this situation that seems like certain deaths…only to switch to Lenore’s perspective as she’s stuck on the other side of the school, not knowing where Annabel. WHAT THEN?

I've seen a few interpretations of the ring toss, but haven't read anyone yet that reads it as a token of her love for Lenore. So.

Annabel Lee is quick to find solutions, and she knew the Stag was interested in the ring, that much is clear enough. So, the only way out was obvious (it was still a gamble, though). And I don't see why tossing it away has to mean her love for Lenore has diminished, or that she has other priorities...

If she had kept it, they were all going to die.

And I doubt Annabel would want to leave Lenore behind like that, dying far away from her without knowing for sure if Lenore made it (another thought, but I'm starting to think Lenore died first, and Annabel second, which is why she's so hell bent on protecting Lenore - but that's for another post).

Do I think she cares about Ada and Prospero? Sure. She could have left Ada behind, for example, and yet she chose to stay and try to get her out of there. But tossing the ring away doesn't mean she suddenly prioritizes them over Lenore or her love for her. She tossed it away because she loves Lenore.

i don’t believe Haymitch and Lenore Dove would have a toasting before the reaping; or that she might had been pregnant during his games (like i recently saw some people theorizing about); or that they even had a serious conversation about having kids at some point in their relationship. Haymitch was a child himself —barely a teenager, really—and he was clearly comfortable enough in his adolescence to dwell on a future that clearly required a certain level of maturity that i don’t believe he had on him yet.

It was his birthday. He was happy because he had real bread for the occasion and his ma had done stewed plum. He was looking forward to spend his day kissing his girl and maybe spending some time with his brother, and mother, and enjoying the rest of the day, after the unavoidable and inconvenient reaping ceremony. He wasn’t making big plans for the future, he wasn’t overthinking the meaning of it all, he wasn’t making cathartic decisions because he thought that maybe he wouldn’t be there anymore…

He was just enjoying his birthday as much as he could and trying —really hard— not to think about the Quell and the double of tributes it came with…

Haymitch wouldn’t marry Lenore before the reaping, because he was planing on seeing her when the whole thing was over —after filling the buckets for his ma and finishing his work at the woods—.He made plans for the afternoon; he promised his mother he would do his chores after the ceremony; and he had a whole schedule for the rest of his day, because he didn’t believe he would be reaped…Toasting bread with his teenage girlfriend when they clearly weren’t ready for something so big in their lives sounds too much like a symbolic decision that only a man who believe he was going to die would do, and i honestly don’t think he even considered it as a real possibility.

I like to see Haymitch as just a innocent, silly boy who rather enjoy the living moment than overthink about the future, and the though of marriage and kids weren’t something his teenage brain even considered as a possibility for someone so not mature….his Ma had him when she was a teenager herself, he wouldn’t want to follow the same path, and he was wise enough to know when it was the right time to tight-the-not with the girl he loved

surnames in nevermore

I'm such a nerd for words and today i realized something about Lenore and Annabel's surnames.

So Lenore's surname is Vandernacht, and when i first read the webtoon i remember thinking that her surname definitely sounded vaguely Dutch or German. now a year or so later i remembered the fact that this was her surname because of the most recent chapter and now i know a lot more random words and facts. Turns out that i was right and it does come from Dutch! Basically, Vander (van der) is translated to 'of the' and Nacht means night. so her name is Lenore of the night.

and Annabel lee's surname is Whitlock, which comes from some old English words (pretty sure it's hwit and loc) and it can mean 'a white enclosure' or just a descriptive surname for someone with white hair.

"Sunrise on the Reaping tried too hard to be sad and a tear-jerker" - congratulations, you have discovered the meaning of the word tragedy. It's exactly what it's supposed to be, a tragedy. I'm sorry, did you want a more colorful way of children getting killed? The whole point of the book is that this tragedy has been happening over and over again for decades and people have tried to stop it and failed but giving up is not an option. Haymitch got to fulfil his promise years later. The whole point is how that tragedy became a more and more refined and polished piece of entertainment, normalized, any resistance erased.

Seeing criticisms that Lenore Dove being related to Lucy Grey and Haymitch being friends with Katniss' dad is "too on the nose" and "cheapens the plot" is hilarious. Once again, the meaning of a tragedy, going right over some people's heads. Besides, District 12 was the smallest one, the population was only 8000. There were barely any Covey left. It was also an isolated environment with very few entertainments. Of course everybody knew everyone. How many kids did Haymitch have to mentor over the years? Of course one of those kids happened to be his friend's. Maybe he would have had other best friends over the years, y'know, if not for the hunger games.

"Haymitch was too much like Katniss" - of course he was like Katniss! Many children were like Katniss! Small town, isolation, dwindling resources, children left fatherless because of them having to do dangerous work, the coal mines, the casualties, seeing your sisters in someone else, no care from authorities...The whole point is that the same thing happened to many children. We're literally told Katniss was just somewhat luckier.

lenore; also a model, but she vlogs with morella a lot and is fairly down to earth. shes also the person monty called a dyke. whoops.

morella; makes a ton of vlog videos with the misfits and generally jus has a good time. she basically jus makes the sweetest most wholesome content and has never gotten into drama. though someone did spread a rumor that she and ada hooked up, it didnt end up being true. she wished it was tho--shes just a girl your honor.

berenice; fashion girlyy! she mostly makes outfit of the day tiktoks like "get ready with me to go clubbing! the shoes are from louboutin and the dress is from my sugar daddy--".
