More DA:O liveblogging (ish). Adventures in Lothering!

Lena ignored her misgivings and made her way into town. Much to both Alistair and Morrigan's dismay, she insisted upon stopping to help lost children and effectively tried to solve the problems of the entire village by herself.

After the fifth time she gave money to a refugee family, Alistair firmly took her aside and gently insisted that she stop doing that before they ran out of money to feed themselves.

"It's really nice Lena, don't get me wrong. But there's such a thing as too nice, you know?" "They need the money, Alistair. That child was as thin as a rake." "Look, it's very endearing that you want to help everyone but we really can't. Just promise me you'll check with me before you agree to help someone else, deal?" "I suppose so. You're the one with the street smarts in this team." A derisive snort from Morrigan cut that particular conversation short.

After finding out that Arl Eamon was sick with an incurable illness, Lena suggested they drop by the Circle - maybe the mages there might know a cure if traditional healing had failed? Alistair agreed that they could go that way en route to Redcliffe and kill two birds with one stone.

On their way out of the village, Lena's natural curiosity led her to drag the others into the tavern after she heard raised voices. They entered only to be confronted by men claiming to work for Loghain, swords bared. Lena begged them to stand down, aided by a Chantry sister that was also present, but no matter how she pleaded they were determined to fight - it was only when one swiped at her that Lena relented and fought back.

After the fight, the lay sister introduced herself as Leliana. Lena was very confused by the other redhead - her talk of visions and hearing the Maker's voice was slightly alarming. Once again ignoring the voice of reason from her companions, Lena graciously accepted Leliana's offer of help.

"More crazy? I thought we were full up." "We need all the allies we can get, don't we? Besides, having the Maker on our side is win-win, surely!"

Just as they were about to leave Lothering behind them, Lena spotted a tall man, held in a cage by the village gates. Horrified, and despite Morrigan trying to drag her forcibly away by the arm, Lena ran up to the man and asked him what he had done to deserve being left for the darkspawn, helpless.

She'd never seen a qunari before, so didn't connect the dots at first. Listening to his story, she declared that no matter what he had done, being left to the darkspawn was too cruel a punishment for anyone. Leaving everyone behind with instructions to guard him, Lena darted back to the Chantry and appealed to the Revered Mother for leniency. Her genuine compassion and earnest expression softened the Mother's heart, and she agreed to give Lena the key, as long as she didn't say where she got it.

Almost before the others had recovered from her sudden disappearance, she reappeared with a broad grin on her face and a key in her hand. After making Sten, for that was the qunari's name, agree to aid them against the Blight the group left Lothering behind and began the long trip to the north of Ferelden. Several weeks of travel loomed large in their future, but Lena didn't mind. She could ask Alistair for more stories of the Wardens.

He didn't need to know it was just because she liked listening to him speaking.

Though I haven’t played Dragon Age Origins, I’ve watched a couple of the romances and I absolutely love Alistair! So, I made a lil Warden that could love him for me. :b

Hard to find screenshots that I can edit together in DAO. But I’m relatively happy with this. 

Amell and Surana kept together for the most part (mages gotta stick together) while Tabris always made a point to stay behind Cousland in case she had to kill this noble too. Cousland wasn’t too thrilled at walking alongside Duncan (she hates that man so much for taking her from her family) but she somehow managed.

Sadly, I have no idea how to take pictures of my characters in game so I’ll have to use other pics of my two main OCs.

– Analise “Ana” Cousland, Grey Warden, Queen of Ferelden, Wife of Alistair Theirin, Hero of Ferelden, Marbari Mother

1. Their favorite thing to do with free time?

In her free time, she tries to spend time with her husband and king, Alistair. Despite their near impossible odds of fertility being both Wardens, he insists they keep trying to produce an heir. She also enjoys when they can sneak off together to go riding in the Ferelden countryside, have picnics, sparring in the training yard of the castle and strolling around the Denerim marketplace for odd wares to decorate their bedchamber. When Alistair is away or busy, she’s usually found reading in the garden (usually various tomes sent to her from her former companions or various books from Hawke’s friend, Varric’s many serials), embroidering, catching up on her correspondences with her brother, playing and caring for her pack of mabaris or inquiring at the castle kitchens for new types of cheese to surprise Alistair.

2. How did they get their name?

Eleanor Cousland grew up listening to stories about an Empress named Analise who ruled over a valley of gold and rode a chariot drawn by giant cats into battle. She idolized the woman in the story so much that she named her only daughter after her.

3. How would they react if there was an impromptu bout of mud wrestling at their home base? What about if one of the companions challenged them?

Despite being a Warden, she is first and foremost a lady so she would decline the challenge. However, she would be happy to chose  champion to fight for her and bet against others while watching. 

4. Would they rather travel or stay at home?

Ana is definitely one who prefers travelling since she travels with her husband and her hounds. She’s also a very proud Ferelden woman and loves to explore her homeland and meet her people.

1. Their favorite thing to do with free time?

Lena loves to hunt, ride, fuck, drink, party and play various games with her companions. She reads as well but more often than not, she likes to be social and just have a good time. 

2. How did they get their name?

Technically named after her mother, Madalena.

3. How would they react if there was an impromptu bout of mud wrestling at their home base? What about if one of the companions challenged them?

She’s ask for it to be a drunk mud wrestling match as she starts stripping down to prepare. If one of her companions challenged her, she would make sure they set wagers to make things more interesting. After all, who wouldn’t want to see Zevran walk around in a plaidweave kilt or loincloth for a day? It would be excruciating for Dorian and Vivienne and e uncomfortable for Cullen which would make it far more funny for everybody else.

4. Would they rather travel or stay at home?

Lena would say she doesn’t have a preference as long as she has her boys with her (Dorian, Varric, Nevan and Bull). With them with her, she can handle anything and be entertained the entire time.

MILA.  a child who lost mother to war and father to illness, she’s spent most of the years that followed selling flowers along the streets of rialto, pickpocketing those who pass, and deftly avoiding the reaching fingers of chantry mothers who, with good intentions but little sense, might seek to force her into an orphanage.  there, she knows, they would mould her into a sister or a templar, and even as young as she is, mila knows well that neither life is for her.

she is ten years old when she attempts to pick the pocket of a warrior who clearly has some stature; imagine her surprise when the woman grabbed her arm gently, smiled, and gave her a fair amount of coin instead.  it was less than a week later when a band of thugs happened to see mila spending some of that coin for food and took it upon themselves to relieve her of it.  the same woman who had given her the coin saved mila’s life and drove the bandits back.  enamored, mila took to following her around, much to the woman’s --- who identified herself only as lena --- frustration.  lena eventually properly sent her away --- but not in truth.  mila simply got sneakier.  sneaky enough to eventually catch her outside the rialto’s walls in the dead of night, speaking softly to a man with a strange tattoo and a familiar accent.

“you’re sure, zevran?” she asked him. “i’m afraid the lead turned out to be little but a dead end,” he replied. “damn it all!” “ah, ah, ah.  language, my dear.” “yes, of course.  your poor virgin ears.  there’s no one to hear us.” the man had chuckled.  “it’s unbefitting for a queen.”  his eyes drifted and landed upon mila.  “besides --- we are not so alone.”

and so mila was caught by the queen of ferelden and her strange associate.  the secret out, queen - consort helena cousland - therein allowed mila to eat with her and zevran at the tavern that helena was staying at and ask her questions.  in turn, mila was able to tell her own story --- of her parents passing, of living on the streets, of violence and fear but freedom, too.  moved by her plight, and perhaps recognizing something in the loss of parents to war, helena asked zevran to take mila to one of the queen’s many homes and have another watch over her.  mila objected, but helena assured her that it was no orphanage, no harm to her freedom; just a way to keep her safe.  besides, helena confided, she’d planned to do something similar since saving her from the bandits --- she couldn’t leave her alone in the city in case they tried to take revenge against the child.

still, while lena slept, mila plotted to escape.  no one, not even the bloody queen, was going to cage her.  she was caught by zevran, who promised that he had no intention of tucking her away inside some home and leaving her trapped.

“how would you,” he asked her, “like to see the world?”

and so she went.  sometimes with zevran, sometimes not, searching for --- as she learned --- a cure for what plagued all wardens.  she was not there to fight, but to learn, and while she saw little of the action, she walked placed outside of antiva --- outside of where she’d ever thought to tread.  zevran trained her, and so did others when they crossed paths --- a strange and aggressive dalish elf, a cheerful dwarf, a man with a stern face and dark eyes.  sometimes she stayed elsewhere, as helena said she would; in a home with servants who primped and prodded.  but mostly?  she met the world, and it met her, and she matched it.  and every few months she would find a way to be with helena, for weeks or days or months at a time.  it did not take her very long to love this new family --- to love helena and zevran especially.  and alistair, the man who she rarely meets but who always makes time to grin and greet her, laughing about his wife and strays.

is is 9:46 when helena, after hours of training with the girl, the veins in her hands dark as pitch, asks if she would like to be her daughter.  mila is fifteen years old.

it will be hard, she tells her.  it will mean responsibility, a future with a crown that weighs far too heavy.  but it will also mean love and a mother and a father, and they will never let anything happen to her.  mila, who hates feeling trapped by people or responsibility, will be faced with much of both.  and she understands if mila says no, and she will not be hurt, and she will understand if mila is afraid of black veins and the chance to lose another set of parents.

mila is not afraid.  she has felt like helena’s daughter for a long, long time --- she grabs her and weeps, says yes, yes, yes, she will be their daughter.  and while she cannot believe she is saying it, yes, yes, yes, she will be queen.

there is more, in the months that follow.  some of it is lies --- she is a distant relative of the couslands, found in the king’s travels.  but much of it is truth --- alistair and helena love her.  she loves the both of them.  and the most true of all --- they are her family, and she is theirs.

I love family dynamics, okay?  Yes, the Trevelyans have seven kids.  And if I were trying to be more historically accurate, then all the other noble families on this list would have similar numbers because they all want a male heir, and a lot of kids die of illness and disease, so they gotta have a lot of them.

But yeah, siblings are my jam.  Cousins too.  *looks at the Tabris with Soris and Shianni*  Also all of these siblings are listed in age from oldest to youngest.

“Owww! Maker’s Breath, Anders, hurry up!”

Anders bit back the laugh, carefully scoring an aloe leaf on a plate precariously balanced on the Warden Commander’s bedside table. “I tried to warn you,” he said, “you’re two shades darker than a glass of milk: of course you’d fry at the beach.”

“But it was Sigrun’s birthday; how could we not take her to the beach while in Amaranthine? She’s never seen the ocean before.” She untied the drawstring at the neck of her linen shift, exposing what had to be the reddest, angriest sunburnt shoulder Anders had ever seen.

“Maker, Lena! You’re as red as your hair,” he exclaimed, “I’m not sure this will be enough.”

Valena tossed her auburn braid with a scoff, “it’ll have to be. I have Ser Eddelbrek and the oh-so-delightful Bann Esmerelle to deal with tonight at the banquet. Ugh, they’re insufferable, never satisfied with anything..”

Anders chuckled, “they make Velanna sound kindly.”

“Oh! You have no idea. I’d rather have dinner with a genlock than Ser Eddelbrek and his neverending diatribe on druffalo farming in the Hinterlands.”

He laughed so hard, he clapped. “Oh, you poor thing! Left to the mercy of druffalo farmers and bad sunburn, and it’s not even Tuesday.” Anders gingerly laid half of the leaf on the bright red shoulder before him. Valena sucked a breath through her gritted teeth.

“Andraste’s plaidweave knickers, that stings,” she swore. “What is that shite? Rashvine?”

“Acemannan,” he replied, gently gliding the leaf over the skin. “The Anders call it ‘aloe.’ The inside of the leaves soothes burns. Useful when living in a desert, you see.” He bit his lip. His mother had brought an aloe plant with her from the Anderfels; he remembered the cheerful pot sitting on the sunny sill of his childhood home. She had used the leaves to treat Anders’s burns the night his magic manifested…

The roar of that blazing barn still rang in his ears, even all these years later. He shuddered, magic roiling beneath his skin as he shoved the memory aside. “Tsk. And don’t think I didn’t catch that earlier, Your Royal Wardeness. Queens shouldn’t cuss,” he chided.

Valena scoffed a laugh, “queens also shouldn’t talk to werewolves or drink dwarves under the table, but here we are.” She sighed. “...But it was worth it, though. The happy tears in Sigrun’s eyes were worth all the acamaca—”

“Acemannan,” Anders corrected with a fond smile.

“It was worth all the acemannan in the world… even if it feels like plant snot after you put it on.” She caught his glance in the dressing table mirror, eyes dancing with merriment. The two friends giggled.

“‘Plant snot.’ How in the Void did the Landsmeet let you be queen?” He asked.

“Oh, believe me, I wonder that, too, some days,” she replied. “But then I remember Alistair accidentally calling Bann Esmerelle a kind of Orlesian cheese at her birthday, and I instantly feel better. ‘Bann Emmental,’ however… Spiteful as a genlock with a mean streak, that one. She still won’t forgive me.”

“You could always try a beard flask: Oghren loved his—”

Any more silliness was cut off when Valena sandwiched his face with the aloe leaves and rubbed wildly, until his face was smothered with ‘plant snot.’ Anders stopped mid-sentence, shocked silent when he beheld his reflection. His now disheveled hair stood out around his head in giant golden rays, like the statue of the Maker in the chapel. He turned to his friend, eyes narrowing.

“...Why, you little—” He leapt off the bed and chased the already fleeing Valena down the hall, Anora the mabari galloping behind…

Along with several Wardens, who were most surprised to see their Commander and Sovereign speeding past in her swimwear, pursued by an enormous hound and frightful-looking mage half-spent with laughter.

DA:O - Travelling to the Circle edition.

Travelling was a novelty for Lena. She'd never really gone anywhere much except in carriages, staying in inns. Morrigan painstakingly taught her how to make a fire, something that took almost two hours, but the delight on Lena's face when she produced a small spark almost made the wait worth it.

As they were on the long trek to the Circle, the nightmares began. Visions of hordes of darkspawn underground, led by a dread beast that could only be the Archdemon, plagued Lena's dreams. One particularly bad night she couldn't hold back a scream as she jolted awake. Luckily she had fallen asleep next to the fire from sheer exhaustion, and the only person who heard was Alistair - he was on watch at the time.

Alistair soothed his fellow Warden with an explanation that it was normal, that he had them too. Not much comfort, but Lena took his words as he intended them - to help. Deciding sleep was a wash at this point, she joined him for the watch. The pair sat together staring at the fire, discussing the Wardens, life at Highever and their respective families until the sun rose over the horizon.

Eventually they made it to the tower that housed the Ferelden Circle of Magi. But of course, nothing was ever going to be easy. The Knight-Commander informed Lena that there would be no help for the Wardens here - the Circle had broken, and the tower was awash with demons and abominations.

Horrified, Lena offered to help search the tower for survivors. She came for aid, at the end of the day, and without either the mages or the templars this entire trip would have been fruitless. There was also the small matter of a healer for Arl Eamon's illness.

Shrugging, the templar agreed to let the group in, but with the warning that they could not leave until the Circle was clear. His ominous warning about the Rite of Annulment sent chills down Lena's spine. No matter how dangerous the mages were, wholesale murder couldn't possibly be the answer. She promised herself that she would save every single soul she possibly could inside the tower.

Inside the tower she met Wynne - a mage she remembered encountering at Ostagar. Wynne was wary of the group as they approached, but Elena's earnest offer of help and the determined set of her jaw must have shown something to the elderly mage. She agreed that, with her help, the group could stop the madness occurring at the top of the tower.

Hearing an explanation from Wynne as to what happened, Lena, Morrigan and Alistair agreed that if they cut off the head of the snake then this situation would be over. While Morrigan thought they should just leave the mages to their own devices, she still agreed to help, if only because she had no other choice.

Worst AU prompt: Dragon Age: Origins. AU where everyone meets doing a reality TV show where they all live in a house together.

i wrote a whole response after misreading the ask (because it's been A Whole Day) so i missed that you specified REALITY tv which would ALSO be very funny because lbr not a whole lot of interpersonal stuff would change but i honestly don't know much about reality tv and also don't want to write a second response when i gotta go to bed in like ten minutes

Well first thing's first morrigan and alistair are actually best friends a la lena headey and peter dinklage, Alistair was a child star on thedosian disney channel and morrigan has no professional acting experience but Alistair tricked her into auditioning and was fucking thrilled when she got the part. Cailan is alistair's also non-actor younger brother whom he convinced to come over to the set and put on this stupid armor and play the king real quick because the original actor didn't show up and everyone's freaking out. They of course look notably similar so alistair's character, who was in fact supposed to be eamon's bastard, was quickly rewritten to be maric's.

I'm thinking flemeth is a world-renowned stage actress that kind of nobody can believe they actually got on dragon age (because it's a dinky little syfy show that everyone really expected to die after the first season but instead became a cult classic almost immediately) and she takes morrigan under her wing while they work together and form a lifelong friendship/mentorship.

Whoever the warden is, their race origin counterpart is their stunt double that they become great friends with over the course of shootijg (brosca and aeducan, tabris and mahariel, cousland and amell) and all the other possible wardens are other crew members.

Zevran was supposed to be a one-off baby antagonist that the warden kills at the end of the interrogation scene (possibly as a sign that they're becoming Darker and Edgier or something) but the second Zev got cast the writers looked at him and said "christ we can't waste this guy just by killing him" and quickly wrote him into the companions; a lot of his background behavior is a cross between orlando bloom's "no one told me what's happening in the scene" legolas and ryan reynolds' "all the writers are striking so i have to write my own character's dialogue" wolverine origins deadpool. He is, of course, a fan favorite and a heartthrob that gossip rags have reported as being involved with every member of the cast at least twice.

Sten's love of cookies is real and the rest of the cast kept ad-libbing jokes about it during takes so it just became canon for his character; he was originally a stunt guy too but then the original actor for the character dropped out first day of shooting so sten just stepped up to the plate.

Leliana is an atheist but takes inspiration for her character's faith from a very devout older woman she's been friends with since she was a teen.

Wynne is also a very experienced stage actor but nobody's surprised that she ended up on dragon age because that's like Her Thing. The only tv/movies she does are cheesy sci-fi and fantasy flicks because she thinks they're fun and relaxing.

Oghren has like three different degrees and is an actual trained fencer and likes his character because he barely has any written lines and gets to just make up inappropriate shit on the spot. He gets into debates with the writer/director about his character's background and motivation and when it's appropriate vs. inappropriate for his character to actually be serious about things.

The writer/director is a former popstar known in her youth as Andraste and the studio making dragon age is called Maker Studios.

Lena loves magic so much. She continues practicing magic after creating a new identity as Lena Mac Eanraig, the new Teyrna of Gwaren. There are rumors about the new Teyrna but as Lena was sent to help evacuate the Teyrnir during the Blight most Gwarens turn a blind eye to the various acts of magic the Teyrna may or may not be doing.
