Synopsis :

As a disciple of the Lei Clan, Lei Wu Jie can't wait to prove his worth as a hero, but as a novice who has only just entered the martial arts world, the path to becoming a true hero is difficult, at best. Undeterred by the challenges that lay before him, Wu Jie makes his way to the great city of Xue Yue, certain that his time there will mould him into the hero he so longs to be. Unfortunately, his trip to Xue Yue is waylaid by an unfortunate mishap at the Villa of Fallen Snow.

As proprietor of the Villa, Xiao Se has all the looks of a wealthy innkeeper, but he can barely afford to keep the inn open. Struggling with his business, Xiao Se is less than pleased when his establishment is damaged by the antics of a young, wannabe hero. Demanding that he make amends for the damage he caused, Wu Jie can think of only one way to appease the grumpy Xiao Se, and that is to take him with him. With no other options, the two set off together without any idea of what fate has in store for them.

Befriending several people along the way, including Wu Xin, Sikong Qian Luo, Tang Lian, and Ye Ruo Yi, Xiao Se and Wu Jie soon find themselves caught up in an adventure far greater than any of them could have imagined. While facing countless dangers, the group stumbles upon a trail of clues that tie one of them to a battle for the throne that took place over a decade ago. The question is, is the intrepid hero ready and willing to take his rightful place as the leader of the people? And where will the brotherhood go from there?

My thoughts on this drama :

Okay… this drama is AWESOME. I wasn't expecting much, due to it being Wuxia style and thus not "fantasy" enough for me. But man was I wrong. It's just so so good.

I loved every second of it. They're all bringing such vibrant characters to life, with the emotions just right. I trully enjoyed the variety of characters the show offered. I laughed and cried and raged and applauded! I trully lived the story from beginning to end.

A very very good point: romance is never the focus of the story. It's there, in the background, but it's first and foremost a story about brotherhood, friendship and bonds against adversity.

Thoughts on The Blood of Youth now that I've finished it (minor spoilers).

Overall it was entertaining. I liked the story, the actors were enjoyable to watch, good costumes, good effects, generally good sets (bonus points for when they reused a set and copped to doing just that in the script. Some refreshing honestly there.) The twist with the multiple scrolls at the end had me laughing. That is the third time I've seen that guy play a shady emperor and he's enjoyable each time.

However, while I really loved the show at the beginning I lost enthusiasm in the last third of it. After thinking about the reasons, I've singled in on this: it has a George R.R. Martin issue, meaning that it introduced so many characters that everything got watered down as the writers scurried around bouncing from one plot to the next, trying to wrap everything up.

Take poor Wuxin. He is presented as a main character, and in fact is a main character at the start. A huge part of the plot centers around him. It is resolved and... he basically disappears. He has a tiny throwaway plot that keeps him isolated, a throwaway explanation as to how he got into that situation, and then poof he's gone again. Thoroughly unsatisfying. For someone who was supposedly rescued through the power of friendship, there was none of it on display, not like what we saw at the beginning of the show.

Lei Wu Jie gets treated better -- at least he doesn't diaper completely -- but he also has entire episodes where he's there for maybe 2 minutes, in what feels like scenes written to remind us he does still exist.

In the meantime we spend lots of time on characters that could have advanced the story off screen (the pretty guy from Untamed -- I love seeing his face but his entire reason for being was to be fridged. While it was cool that it was a guy instead of a girl, all that time could have been spent in better ways). Some characters could have written out easily with no effect on the plot at all (pretty guy's disciples, who did nothing but take up time as far as I can recall), giving time back to the main characters.

Overall, I'd still recommend the show to people who like C-dramas, but not to someone who hasn't watched them before. It's too bad. I really thought this one would be excellent, but it ended up just being good.
