Happy shardiya navratri,
So the festive season has officially begun, huh.. where did the year go? Anyways we're not here for that.
I see everyone sharing their thoughts an excitement about navratri/Durga puja and i kind of want to share my own.
Navratri in my house is vastly different from that in Gujarat/west bengal/jharkhand, basically all the states popular for their loud and colorful celebration.
We dont necessarily play garba at nights or organise huge pandals for a community get together. I mean we do have pandals and all here, and people throng in huge numbers but it's not part of tradition. It's more of an acknowledgement to traditions of other states.
In fact my experience of Navratri is very different and subdued. Here, we get up early and we all feel the floral incense in the air, a little more than usual. You can easily hear people doing the path of Durga saptashati out loud, something we don't do normally (i mean the out loud part).
The atmosphere isn't loud but it's impactful.
The weather is a little more pleasant than it was on ganesh chaturthi. I specifically wait for the kirtan in a nearby temple, every evening, which is now a norm.
The idol of maa Durga is quite possibly the most beautiful. New lehenga for her, new bangles, new mukut,, everything changes but somehow the change feels more reassuring than daunting.
Personally I listen to Lalitha sahasranamam every day, if possible.
And it's just, it's a vibe that i can't possibly put in words but it's very specific to navratri.
We have a temple here called Tapeshwari devi and oh my god, once you step foot there you will change. The experience will imprint on your soul. I remember I went there a few years back for the first time, it felt as if I've gone back in time.. i wish I would get a chance this year, it seems highly unlikely but I'm hoping.
I know a lot of people don't believe that uttar kand was originally part of Ramayana but Tapeshwari devi is dedicated to maa Sita. It is said she and three other women used to sit the for their tap. There are four idols here and no one knows which one is of sita.
Then there is this 1700 year old temple with 12 idols. The story is something i don't understand.
What I'm trying to say is that we have several centres of spiritual significance, dedicated to divine feminine but somehow instead of going the way temples of Bengal did, the expression here became something else entirely.
Durga puja is a tapas for artisans and a place for community to collaborate and bond.
Navratri is here is not like that. Sure you will find a fair kind of setting outside the temples but it's not the same.
This has become the time to seek wisdom but on your own, in a way that might feel isolating. Instead of focusing a part of energy on epressig the devotion in beautiful artistic ways, that energy is directed inwards entirely.
Sigh. Anyways, my rant is not over I've just run out of words. || Masterlist || part 2

I consider it a big privilege to get to participate in someone else's culture. When my friend said that I could wear an anarkali to her engagement party, I thought she was humoring me because she knows I adore Indian clothes. Even when she asked me if I would wear a lehenga to the main wedding ceremony, and asked if I wanted to wear desi clothes for the whole wedding, I thought she was just humoring me.
Y'all she just told me that her entire family is psyched that the Sunscreen-American is wearing their cultural dress. Her FMIL in India asked if I (and my other friend who's going) would be open to getting henna done at the mehendi. Open to it?!? I would love to! I'm going to be dancing at the garba, I'm going to be putting haldi on the bride and groom at the pithi, I'm even getting the stuff for us to decorate dandiya at the bachelorette party.
I see so much tacky, disrespectful cultural appropriation in the US that sometimes I forget that cultural appreciation is also a thing, and that most people are very happy when you respectfully participate in the things they've invited you to join. Like any time my friends participate in my family traditions.

Gujarat is a vibrant, lively, and costume-filled place. Th+e core of their identity is derived from their arts and crafts. Its traditional attire is another example of how its culture is united. The women can be seen elegantly decked up in Onlion Chaniya Cholis, also known as Ghagra or Lehenga Cholis. This outfit, worn at the Garba event, epitomizes Gujarati culture as a tribute to elegance and beauty. A chaniya is defined by an exaggerated flare on a knee-length skirt. It has vertical panels for extra flair and is either cut and sewn or gathered at the waist. A blouse with buttons or a tie-up, typically at the back, is what is commonly referred to as a choli

Dressing Up for Dandiya Night
Tumblr media
Navratri is a vibrant and lively festival celebrated with immense enthusiasm and fervor in India. One of the highlights of Navratri is the Dandiya and Garba dance, where people come together in colorful traditional attire to dance and celebrate. If you're wondering how to dress up for Dandiya during Navratri, look no further. In this blog post, we'll explore some stunning lehenga choli styles to help you make a captivating fashion statement during this festive season. Vibrant Lehenga Choli Sets
Tumblr media
Lehenga choli sets are the perfect choice for Dandiya nights as they offer a blend of tradition and style. Opt for vibrant and colorful lehenga cholis with mirror work, embroidery, or intricate designs. Bright shades such as royal blue, hot pink, deep red, and vibrant orange are ideal for Navratri. These colors not only exude energy but also add to the festive spirit. Mirror Work Magic
Tumblr media
Navratri is all about sparkle and shine, and mirror work lehenga cholis are a fantastic choice for the occasion. Mirror work adds a touch of glamour and catches the light beautifully while you twirl during the Dandiya dance. Choose a lehenga choli with mirror work on the blouse, lehenga, or both for a dazzling effect.
Play with Prints
Tumblr media
If you want a unique and trendy look for Dandiya, consider printed lehenga choli sets. Floral prints, geometric patterns, and traditional motifs can be a refreshing departure from solid colors. Match the colors in your lehenga choli to the theme of Navratri, and you'll be ready to dance the night away.
Go Traditional with Embroidery
Intricate embroidery work on your lehenga choli can give you a traditional yet elegant look. Choose traditional Indian embroidery styles like Zari, Resham, or Chikankari to add an authentic touch to your attire. Embroidered lehenga cholis are versatile and can be worn beyond Navratri.
Accessorize Thoughtfully
Tumblr media
Don't forget to accessorize your Navratri lehenga choli appropriately. Statement jewelry, such as chandelier earrings, bangles, and a maang tikka, can elevate your look. Consider wearing mojris or juttis to dance comfortably during Dandiya.
Hairstyle and Makeup
Tumblr media
Opt for traditional hairstyles like braids, buns, or a half-up, half-down style adorned with flowers or hairpins. For makeup, focus on a bold and colorful eyeshadow palette, kohl-rimmed eyes, and bright lipstick to match your outfit.
Comfort Matters
While fashion is important, don't forget comfort. Choose a lehenga choli that allows you to move freely and dance with ease. Ensure that the blouse fits well and doesn't restrict your arm movements. Navratri Dandiya nights are all about celebrating the joy of dance, music, and tradition. Your attire should reflect the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of the festival. Embrace the beauty of lehenga cholis, play with colors and designs, and don't forget to add dazzling accessories to create a mesmerizing look for the Dandiya night festivities. Enjoy the celebrations with style and grace!
