Today, I drew myself a bath and decided to revisit the cinematic masterpiece that is Lego Batman. Oh brother. This must be one of the best written comedy/action films I’ve ever seen. The humour, the sexual innuendos, a whole ass queer-coded plot premise and Will Arnett, yet again, playing a narcissistic, emotionally unavailable jerk?! It’s easily one of my favourite movies of all time. I also love Michael Cera Robin ❤️

Okay this might be missing details but let's go.

Quick American comic book history lesson. Batman is one of the first ever superheroes. Superman invented the superhero comic book, but Batman popped up a short time afterwards. He starts as a serious grim detective/superhero combo but acquires a sidekick (an orphan named Dick Grayson, AKA Robin. He adopts him. Keep him in mind) and the stories get more light hearted and campy. After WWII, the public gets obsessed with horror comics, which children get their hands on. This upsets parents. A psychologist named Fredric Wertham writes a paper called "Seduction of the Innocent" about how comics are evil and corrupting children.

He says a lot of stuff but most relevant is he SPECIFICALLY cites Batman as being homosexual propaganda due to Batman and Robin apparently being coded as an older man and younger boy couple (keep in mind Robin is a child so. Ew. But again it's the 50s and the Lavender Scare is in full swing so this is common rhetoric at the time). This paper leads to the creation of the Comics Code Authority, which is basically the Hays Code for comic books (good must triumph evil, women must act feminine and men must act masculine, basically must be "child appropriate" aka not break the white cishet nuclear family standard!). DC follows this by trying to make Batman straight by creating Batwoman and Batgirl to be love interests for Batman and Robin respectively (quick aside, the modern version of Batwoman is now Bruce Wayne's lesbian cousin). And you know how the Hays Code led to villains becoming queercoded? Guess what happens to our Batman villains!

The biggest one for this to happen to is Joker. Batman's most iconic villain, he's colorful, loud, ridiculous, and depending on the writer, either just a silly jokester or the most cruel man you can imagine. We've got the ingredients for a queercoded villain right here, and writers took it. The white face and bright red grin was originally from his acid bath, but now our guy applies powder and lipstick for his clownly look. He takes to calling Batman nicknames such as "Batsy". His motivation mostly boils down to "how can I get Batman's attention". He adopts feminine mannerisms and cross dresses. He may even yse Joker use euphisms for how in love he is (Lego Batman's "I hate you. I hate you more" scene) or STRAIGHT UP SAY HE'S IN LOVE WITH BATMAN (looking at you, Batman Audio Adventures Joker, with your nefarious plan to dunk Batman in a LOVE POTION ON VALENTINE'S DAY SO HE WOULD ALSO BECOME OBSESSED WITH HIM)

I have not read the story myself yet, but that post that prompted this, the copy of "Arkham Asylum, House of Madness". That story is written by Grant Morrison (who I should mention a. Is queer and uses they/them, and b. Has said Batman could be inherently gay due to him dressing in tight leather) and I need to find his post again but my good buddy jokeryuri has also done a compilation of material related to that story and Joker's queercoding present in it. I just remember something about Joker trying to seduce Batman

Speaking of "Batman could be gay", there are a few other people who work on various Batman versions that acknowledge that elements of Batman are gay. Frank Miller calls Joker and Batman's relationship a "homophobic nightmare" and that "it would be healthier if Batman was gay". George Clooney, playing Batman in the movie Batman and Robin, says he played Batman as gay. Batman and Robin was also directed by Joel Schumacher, a gay man, and is SO FUCKING CAMPY GOD I LOVE IT. I actually like Batman Forever (also directed by him) more because that one has Riddler and Two Face's earth shattering homosexual relationship (they cling to each other so so much and are very flamboyant) but yeah that version is very gay

There's also a LOT of accidental queercoding in general. First example I can think of is classic Dick Grayson himself actually! He "grew up" in the 80s and became his own hero, and during the 90s he all but says he's demisexual (saying he can't imagine having sex unless he has an established connection with whoever). Modern DC plays up his sex appeal though and turned him into a flirty playboy which sucks because it's in direct defiance of those panels but it's fine :) (gritting teeth).

The other big example is my special guy Hugo Strange, Batman's first villain to get a reappearance (Joker came first but he died and didn't reappear until THIRTY OR SO YEARS LATER, while Hugo was just like one year between appearances). I have a whole post that are just images of him being gay for Batman that I can grab in a bit but the gist is he's obsessed with the Batman identity and is constantly trying to prove he's better than him. There's also that time he kept a sex doll that he started dressing up as Batman and in one issue is implied to have slept with it so. Make of that as you will.

Also it's kind of a joke at this point that every Batman villain is in love with him. The Arkham Knight game having Mad Hatter (an Alice in Wonderland themed villain known for trying to find "his Alice" AKA a girl to love) calling Batman Alice and inviting him into his cell. The time Killer Croc was at a strip club and Batman confronted him there and Killer Croc first assumed he was a stripper and told him to start stripping. Riddler (canonically bisexual in the comics!) leading Batman on a riddle hunt showing him all his past loves and concluding with a date with him

I could go on but TL;DR? Batman yaoi. Maybe he's technically a bara due to the muscles and usually written by a man as opposed to pretty boy written by a woman but he can be yaoi

Basically, Batman started out as a rather queer character. In the beginning, he gave 'gay vibes.' Grant Morrison says that "gayness is built into batman'. There were scenes in the comics of Bruce and Dick say; sharing beds, or saying things that could be very much taken out of context.

Around the 50s, parents were starting to catch on and this was when the Comics Code Authority was introduced. This is basically a massive censorship to 'protect the children.' like with; DnD, horror, being queer, etc.

I mean look at the Joker; he is framed as being obsessed with batman, right? and Batman continuously denies him. It's like joker is "in love" with him, right? So it was framed as the "bad" queer and "good" straight macho man is Batman. (Even tho batman remains... a very queer character.)

in the 50s, absolutely, i won't deny how gay it looked for bruce and dick to sleep so damn close to each other lol. i do still question that it was there in the *start* of batman & robin's dynamic though, since they kicked off in the 40s as legal guardian and ward, and i *have* seen some people seem to imply that it was in the very very beginning, or that the earliest comics neeever had bruce and dick's dynamic as something more akin to parent-and-child. if i could see more direct evidence in the early 40s of the same shit, like the beds-too-close thing, then i'd buy that it was literally baked into batman's character and not just appended to him 14 years after his inception.

i have yet to see evidence that goes *that* far back, to the actual beginning, and i'm a bit too busy to go looking for it myself when i've already promised to read some other comics first, hehe...

I don't ship these 2 in a romantic way, but I KNOW THEY ARE BEST FRIENDS. DC TOLD ME SO THEMSELVES. The way they HATE eachother but also Joker has shown mutual respect towards Riddler like when he asked him for help in Dotf. Riddlejokes is prime best friend material among the rogues gallery!!!!! I KNOW THESE 2 FUCK. there is no way they don't. Lex falls right into Joker's type of the billionaire with an attitude. Also they both love someone else so the conditions of their relationship is very explicit between them. Fuck buddies and the best of the A-list villains. Lex finds Joker an absolute nuisance but that never stops Joker does it? They are coworkers and are heavy players in the legion of doom and I think they are around eachother often. Love Lexjokes 💖

I want to like this ship but I read a fic where the Twoface and Joker banged and it was so alarming ive been scared of this ship ever since. This ship is the monster that lives under the bed. I'm scared.... very scared of this pairing. ALSO for concrete evidence Joker said he doesn't respect twoface in dotf so I don't think the vibes match.

Tlm identity headcanons + some ships

Okay so before we get started I just wanna say that these aren't necessarily canon to my nextgen "LCV" nor will some make sense, this is just what I believe deep down.

Emmet's a biromantic (with a preference for girls), gray-asexual, polyamorous GNC cis man (he/they). They're in poly marriage with Rex and Wyldstyle!

He knew he was gray-ace for a pretty long time, but had no clue he was also bi and poly till Rex (quite literally) crashed into his and Lucy's life. Ems uses masc, fem, and neutral terms Interchangeable, so you'll often hear Rex and Lucy refer to them as their wife or spouse.

Rex's a polyamorous, demi-bisexual, GNC Trans man (he/they/xe). Xe's in poly marriage with Wyldstyle and Emmet!

I don't know why I HC Emmet as cis but Rex as trans but I do. Their just trans okay man??? Like his husband, Rex had no clue he was bi until he met them. Unlike his husband, it took him a while to realize and except that. Rex only uses masc terms. The Xe/xem pronouns are only to be use by xir family and very close friends.

Wyldstyle's a bisexual polyamorous demi-girl (she/fae/they). Fae's in a poly marriage with Emmet and Rex!

Genuine question, which jokers do you think are the most well written. I’m just getting into Batman and it’d be nice to hear a perspective that recognizes particular nuance due to a certain amount of insight that comes with being queer

Disclaimer: I don’t read comics. I’m a fake fan. /hj but seriously I haven’t read many Batman comics (yet) so I’ll try to just... sum it up v quickly, with my (somewhat limited) opinions on th matter:

-Lego Batman Movie: personally the best Joker. Well written, very VERY queer coded, and light hearted, but still evil. I love his design. This Joker is the Joker that has rescued the trope of the queer coded villain but this time in a more positive light. He’s a trickster, and we’re supposed to be annoyed at him, not scared of him. Annoyed in a cute endearing way. Otherwise I’d say this Joker is written to be a caricature of the OG character in a way that children can understand, so the movie didn’t try to be overly convoluted about his relationship with Batman, and they just straight up said, yup it’s gay

-Dark Night: While the queer coding (and the humor, mostly) is a bit lost in translation, all the “Batman completes me fuhuhuhu” moments are a very good summary of what makes the character such a great villain. Also he’s TERRIFYING. Great acting (RIP Heath Ledger) and great writing. If you want a more serious, less clownish take on the Joker, this one makes it right.

-Killing Joke: very very edgy and fucked up, but also a very good character study. The point of the Joker is that he doesn’t have a meaningful backstory- he’s just a murder clown. His backstory just happened to him. And the Killing Joke makes a very good job at exploiting it. Does h even remember it? did it even happen? unreliable narrator, flashbacks, monologues- it’s a very good Joker. Otherwise the story is a bit meh (and it fridged Barbara, boo!). Read the comic- the movie adaptation sucks ass.

-any animated jokers, really, will be VERY well written, mostly because animation is (wrongly) seen as child only media. Animated jokers don’t rely on murder so much to be scary, to the point they’re even WORSE, which is pretty good in my opinion. any joker voiced by Mark Hamill is going to be a treat. Check out the Batman animated series Joker, who is a piece of shit in every conceivable way and freezes his victims with neurotoxin, or the 2004 Matsuda show Joker, who is literally a feral clown.

-the Lego DC supervillains game Joker is also very fun, and a wonderful tribute to the character’s history too. And he’s semi-decent to Harley which is pretty sweet. Also voiced by Mark Hamill! meanwhile the TellTale Games Joker is... Well, a VERY canon divergent take on the character, but he’s super interesting, offers a neat spin on the concept of the Joker, and is very very very gay for Bruce.

-1966 Show Joker. Yes, this Joker is, while dangerous in-universe, a comedic character, but bear with me. When your shitty tv show makes the Riddler (who at the time was a bottom of the barrel D-lister) be cooler and scarier than the Joker, you know theyre doing something right- which doesn’t mean Romero’s mustached joker isn’t also scary. His laugh is very haunting and overall? I like the idea of the Joker as a trickster type villain that constantly tries new crimes just because he’s bored.

-Arkhamaniacs: this comic is adorable and super sweet, so give it a try. A young bruce Wayne lives with his parents opposite an apartment building called Arkham. Bruce admires its inhabitants colorful clothes and eccentric lifestyle, and the most colorful of them all, a mysterious smiling man in a purple suit, teaches little Bruce the wonders of friendship and imagination and being extremely gay. no, really, a popular reading of the book is that Arkham is a queer housing project and Bruce is a closeted little kid. this Joker is funny as hell, weird as hell, and very very wholesome at times. Hell, he’s friends with all the other villains for once. And Jonathan changes his name to Steve.

LMAO I DID! I think I’ve made it kind of obvious in this blog but I... don’t... particularly... care... for... the joker.... unless he’s, y’know, fun to watch. Cause he’s a clown, and clowns are supposed to be entertaining. But since you politely brought it up, and and because I have a deep respect for mutual Romero-lovers, I guess this would be a good time to explain my rankings and just discuss my general thoughts on each clown:

General Thoughts:

For the most part, I don’t really care for the Joker. This is hardly an uncommon opinion here on tumblr, but I definitely fall on the side of the fandom that feels that he gets too much attention from DC. I get WHY they use him so often for films and comics, and I don’t have anything against *most* folks who consider them their favorite Batman villain, but at this point he’s used more for shock value and as a crutch instead of anything interesting. Like, instead of giving attention to the other Rogues, writers (at least for the comics) will try and make up some bullshit story that they can shoehorn the Joker into, ‘cause it sells. It’s tiring, and I feel like the character has lost his meaning; I can only read so many stories about the Joker, I don’t fucking know, wearing a suit made from dead babies and Jason Todd’s flayed corpse before I get sick of it.

I’m at the point where I’ll like any Joker who’s just fun to watch. I genuinely respect those who prefer darker interpretations of the character, but that isn’t me; I vastly prefer the lighthearted takes on him, because... at this point... writers who use the “cleaner” version of him tend to be more creative, since they actually have to write a Joker story that doesn’t rely on gore/torture porn.

TIER ONE:

Joker Baby: Self explanatory. Joker Baby is thematic, thoughtful, and intense. Everytime I watch this video, I shiver with fear and pleasure; something primal in me awakens whenever Joker Baby runs his fingers through his spray-on dyed hair, and ends up smearing green paint on his forehead- it represents the inner turmoil, the chaos, that resides within the disturbed body that is Joker Baby. Nothing can ever hope to top the artistic and cultural impact Joker Baby has had on society.

TIER TWO:

Batman Ninja: I genuinely believe that Batman Ninja is one of the most fun, organic, and creative things to come out from the Batman side of DC comics in like... hmmm... a decade, maybe (I could talk for hours about how much I love this movie but that’s something for a future post). This Joker is easily, and unironically my favorite interpretation of the character, period. I love his energy, his design, everything. This is the most fun I’ve ever had watching a Joker on-screen, and for that I’ve gotta give the film credit where it is due.

Batman ‘66: I looooove Caesar Romero. Batman ‘66 in general is one of my favorite pieces of Batman media, and I absolutely adore this Joker. The show is pure, genuine fun, and it’s nice to turn my brain off and watch a show where the entire cast was allowed to goof around. This Joker is just a cute, goofy little clown-man who likes to commit crimes, go surfing, turn Gotham’s water reserve into gelatin, and have wild orgies with Penguin, Catwoman, and the Riddler. I massively appreciate the hustle. I love his little mustache and his facial expressions. I’d give him a chaste little kiss on the cheek if I could.

The Batman: EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL TAKE BUT. I think TB!Joker is better than what people will give him credit for. I can only imagine how stressful it must have been to be the first Batman cartoon to follow BTAS and the writers for this show knew they were gonna be fucked no matter what they did with the Joker, so they just decided to try something completely different with him. Personally, I appreciate the new direction- he has a fun, unhinged energy. I’ve placed him higher than BTAS/BTNA!Joker simply because The Batman was the show that got me into the Rogues in the first place, and I’m just a bit closer to this Joker because of it. Also his vampire form was cool as FUCK in Batman Vs. Dracula and the scene where he gets drenched in blood at a blood bank is fucking awesome.

Batman the Animated Series/The New Adventures: Everyone loves BTAS’s Joker, and I’m no exception. Mark Hamill is fucking great, and the writers clearly knew the character well enough to create a version of him that can be fun and threatening. As an aside, I unironically like his redesign in BTNA- I remember Hamill mentioning somewhere that he thought it was neat that this Joker looked more like a shark (I’ll see if I can find a source on that... I think he said it in an interview with Kevin Smith?) and I kinda agree with him. the redesigns in the final season are hit or miss, but I didn’t get why so many people bitched about the Joker’s new look.

Batman Unlimited: Hear me out... Hear me out... Clown... funny... and cute... He wears a little crown and gives Solomon Grundy a little smooch on the cheek and it is as delightful as it sounds. Yes the Batman Unlimited films literally only exist to sell toys but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy them on some ironic level.

TIER THREE:

Lego Batman: He’s a gay icon. He has the range. Enough said.

White Knight: This is just a genuinely good, original take on the character, and the art in White Knight is absolutely gorgeous. 

Arkham: My friends and I joke that this Joker is basically a more unhinged version of BTAS! Joker and... yeah. I’m glad Hamill and Paul Dini got to fuck around with the character more, but I never really dwelled on the Joker parts of the games like I might have for other characters. I definitely liked him the most in Arkham Asylum, as he was more fun to watch. Arkham City was fiiiiine, but I think I replayed the game so much that I kinda got fatigued with everything about it. Genuinely hated his part in Origins, and I was pissed that he stole the attention from Black Mask and Bane (who’s the best fucking part of Origins IMO). I’ll admit that I... Haven’t... played... Knight yet (I have it on PC but my laptop is too wimpy to run it) but like... He’s dead at that point, so I’d assume he isn’t the main point of that game anyway. I love Mark Hamill and the fact I can personally beat the shit out of this Joker, so he’s ranked up pretty high for those reasons.

TIER FOUR:

Batman ‘89: TBH this Joker should be a rank higher, but I’m too lazy to hop onto PicsArt to change it. NIcholson was an excellent choice, and I apprecaite how this Joker makes use of the playful and unhinged aspects of the character. Also, his outfits are cute, and I love the museum scene.

Brave and the Bold: Technically this Joker SHOULD be ranked higher since he’s literally based on the more lighthearted comics in the 60′s but... ehhh... I haven’t really watched BATB so I don’t have any strong opinions on the show and how it handles the character. he’s ranked this high through beause I appreciate what they were going for.

Golden Age: The quality of comics are always subjective, based on the creative team behind them. Some I’ll like more, others less so, It’s kind of hard to rank the pre-52 comic version of the Joker because of this.

TIER FIVE:

Killing Joke: Read it, didn’t care for it. I acknowledge how massive the impact this comic had on... everything, but just because I recognize how important this graphic novel is, doesn’t mean I have to like it.

The Dark Knight: Ledger did an excellent job with the role, but uhh... I’m kind of sick of the alt-right chuds who are out there sucking this Joker’s dick. The fanbase definitely ruined the character for me.

TIER SIX:

99′: Eh

Endgame: No

Suicide Squad: NO

Death of the Family: Hate him. Despise him. Lame stupid dumb little edgy bitch.

Gotham (Jeremiah): I don’t particulary care for Gotham in general, but the only reason I ranked this Joker over Jerome is beause I thought it was kinda funny to see that they made him a little rat-man, and I liked watching all the fujoshi on here cry and complain that they can’t ship this version of the joker with the pre-pubescent Bruce Wayne in the show bc he’s too ugly.

Gotham (Jerome): stop shippping this freak (who is fucking eighteen years old) with a literal twelve year old child. what the FUCK is wrong with yall.

UNRANKED:

The Joker (2019): I don’t plan on watching this film, nor will I ever. years ago I saw the lego batman movie in theaters when it first came out and I had a great time. I wasn't as smart as I am right now but there was something really obvious that even I could notice about batman and joker in that movie, they are obviously intended to be gay. at the end of the movie they lean into eachother's faces like they're about to kiss and both say I hate you. this one kid, probably five years old says "they meant I love you" then they giggled and their parents said nothing. it's great to know that there's kids that small who understand what being gay is and know that it's not a bad thing. thinking about it makes me kind of emotional knowing how far people have come

Conclusion

With all that being said, there is the question of what actual queer characters are there in film and television.

According to The Changing Face of Gay Representation in Hollywood Films from the 1990s Onwards: What's Really Changed in the Hollywood Representation of Gay Characters? by Sarah Baker, "While Hollywood stars and production companies have been active and outspoken in support of gay rights and gay marriage, GLAAD (2013) noted that of the 101 major studio releases in 2012, only 14 contained characters identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual and there were no films containing transgender characters."

While I am positive this number has gone up in recent years, the issue in the present media is not necessarily the number of queer characters in our media, but how they are being represented.

Typically, if they are not villains, queer characters will not be the main characters of films and television shows and will simply be side characters that are there to quip sassy remarks (for comedic effect) to push the main protagonist to continue the story in some way.

If queer romance is the main focus of the story, then usually the story will end in tragedy with unrequited love or even death. Additionally, queer characters will usually exhibit distress and self-hatred in regards to their queerness.

While there definitely has been progress for queer representation in media, it does not mean that all modern media is perfect. We need to continue to critically consume the films and television shows we view and be able to recognize when they may be falling into the same dangerous tropes about queer people.

So, what should we advocate for in media?

I want to bring up the movie that helped me come up with this project in the first place: The Lego Batman Movie (2017).

While it is a children's movie, the movie discusses many of the issues of hegemonic masculinity.

Batman, who is usually portrayed as a totem of masculinity, is instead shown to be an emotionally stunted man child due to his obsession with being "manly." He finds himself to be alone and lonely despite his superhero status because he always pushes others away.

This includes Joker, Batman's archnemesis. Although in this movie, Batman refuses to say that he and Joker have that special relationship of archnemeses.

From this clip alone, you can see that the movie attempts to portray Batman and Joker's enemy relationship as a symbolism for a romantic one. Joker thinks what he and Batman have is special, but Batman refuses to see that, saying that no one means anything to him. This scene, which is from the beginning of the movie, sets up Batman as an "antagonist" because of his refusal to acknowledge the special people in his life.

The Lego Batman Movie becomes a movie where instead of Joker simply being the queer-coded bad guy, it is actually Batman who is the ultimate bad guy because he gets caught up in the ideals of hegemonic masculinity. The entire movie revolves around Batman unlearning these scripts and learning how to let people in his life.

By the end of the movie, Batman and Joker have to work together to save Gotham City. This puts Joker in a positive light. Instead of being your typical queer-coded villain who brings chaos and corruption, he is a hero. Furthermore, both Batman and Joker are queer-coded in this movie due to their archnemesis relationship being a metaphor for an actual relationship as they tell each other, "I hate you," lovingly in replacement for the usual "I love you"s.

I think that this movie shows a possible positive future for queer-coding in media, especially in children's programs. Queer-coding is not something that has to be negative. It can be positive like in The Lego Batman Movie, where the queer-coded characters are heroes and queer-coded relationships are appreciated.
