A snail leech came to my aquarium from a live plant and I couldn't bear to just discard it bc leeches are kinda cool. but as snail leech does it immediately ate two of the snails I added, so BANISHED to the childhood betta tank bc the idea of culling or flushing it makes me sad.

Maybe I'll feed it excess snails once they're breeding?

One small step for leeches, one giant leap for leechkind! For the first time, we have concrete evidence that at least one species of terrestrial leech in Madagascar can jump. Mai’s work is important to conservation efforts because leeches are increasingly being collected to survey vertebrate biodiversity. By analyzing their blood meals, researchers are able to identify other animals living alongside the leeches, ranging from wildcats to frogs to ground-dwelling birds. Prettiest leeches I've ever seen!

These are local Placobdella parasitica (smooth turtle leeches) I pulled off of our permanent-rehab pond sliders. While these critters can evade detection on healthy aquatic turtles by staying under the shell and behind the legs, they're given an advantage over turtles with deformed/injured shells and turtles with less leg functionality, (assumedly) allowing them to multiply over more surface area.

I will be taking these two (live) specimens to my bio lab on Tuesday. I removed a large cluster of juveniles that I have since humanely euthanized from a large pond slider to bring in as well. The two live specimens are mature adults and will be released after lab examination.

Unfortunately, there is not much in terms of information on these guys. Hopefully we see more about them in the future!
