oh so about the LZ tribute band i saw last night. they were pretty decent, i might share some clips from last night’s show later on. anyways, having seen at least four LZ tribute bands in my lifetime, the group Get The Led Out is still by far my favourite. in my opinion, they are probably the closest to sounding like the guys but still, i thought Mothership gave the crowd a pretty fun show last night.

one of my favourite parts about last night’s show was when the band’s photographer came up to me and was like “ma’am, you are one hot lookin’ led zeppelin fan! mind if i take your photo for the fan page?” so of course i responded with “honey, me and everyone else in this room including yourself are lookin’ very hot tonight. but if you insist, you may take my photo.” i want to apologise to that lovely man if i looked rather intoxicated in that photo. the alcohol got to the best of me last night, yet i did very well at maintaining my composure. all i could manage to do was smile like an idiot the entire night.

my other favourite part was when this one woman standing next to me leaned in closer to me and said “honey, you seem a bit too young for this kind of crowd but you blend in so perfectly. don’t worry, we’re all family here.” i smiled at her and said “thank you, and music has no age limit. to be quite honest, this is the kind of stuff that turns me on. they don’t make music like this anymore.” we clinked our beers to that while singing to our heart’s content.

On December 10th, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues-infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin.

Founding members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 17 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks "Whole Lotta Love," "Rock And Roll," "Kashmir," and "Stairway To Heaven."

A film of the show, "Celebration Day, is available on DVD and Blu-ray and includes the entire concert in HD video and in 5.1, 48/24 hi-resolution audio surround sound.

"Celebration Day" is an incredible document of the now legendary concert, which has been described as possibly the greatest rock and roll concert ever.

The two hour feature length film is presented in beautiful high definition video, and stunning audio quality.

The aspect ratio is 16x9. The film is directed by Dick Carruthers who had previously worked with Led Zeppelin on their award winning 2003 release "DVD" - a release that remains one of the highest selling music DVD's of all time.

The "Celebration Day" film is already critically acclaimed and the DVD & Blu-ray releases are certain to become consistently high selling titles in the Led Zeppelin catalog.

A bonus DVD in the deluxe versions features the dress rehearsal at Shepperton Studios, filmed a few days before the O2 concert. The rehearsal is filmed in SD and recorded in stereo.

Stairway to Heaven Led Zeppelin - Kennedy Center Honors

In my opinion, this is without a shadow of a doubt the greatest tribute I've ever seen to a band, very moving. Every time I witness this, it brings tears to my eyes. The overwhelming honor of being recognized by top musicians as one of the greatest rock and roll bands, performing arguably the best rock and roll song ever, is simply awe-inspiring. To be in that moment, realizing that your impact and music will endure beyond your own lifetime, evokes a mix of profound sadness and triumphant joy.

Just in case those unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin are unaware, their Drummer sadly passed away some time ago, his son is playing the drums here. His signature hat was a bowler hat, thus the bowler hats in the choir. Very very classy tribute.

Some personal thoughts on this performance of Stairway To Heaven...

There was something profoundly moving watching the YouTube footage of Robert Plant performing Stairway To Heaven at the Andy Taylor concert.

This was the first live public airing of the song since the Led Zeppelin 02 Reunion on December 10 2007.

Before I delve in to this subject, Robert’s entire appearance was captivating. Thank you delivered with much emotion, Black Dog hammed up brilliantly and the version of Season of the Witch segueing into a reprise of Black Dog lyrics and Buffalo Springfield’s For What it’s Worth – as in the LA Forum 1970 Blueberry Hill bootleg.

Incidentally, bassist on the night Guy Pratt noted that he has now performed Black Dog with both Robert and Jimmy Page – he was part of the touring band on the Coverdale Page Japan visit in late 1993. The band line up on the night consisted of the aforementioned Guy, former Reef guitarist Kenwyn House (wearing a dragon patterned shirt shades of Jimmy perhaps), Rod Stewart’s drummer David Palmer, Andy Taylor plus Andy Taylor’s son Andy J Taylor on guitar, singer Anne Rani and musician Dino Jelusick on keyboard and backing vocals.

So back to Stairway To Heaven...

We have all had a journey with this song over the years. Mine commenced on April 4 1971 when I heard it on my radio listening to Led Zeppelin’s BBC In Concert performance on Radio One’s John Peel show. I’d heard Jimmy in an interview describing how it had come together in various sections building to a climax. Sure enough this tentative version did just that.

I first saw it performed live on Sunday November 21 1971 at the Empire Pool Wembley – an extraordinary night. It was of course one of the stand out tracks on their just released fourth album.

It went to attain legendary status – the most played record on American radio and from 1975 the rightful finale to every Led Zeppelin live performance.

Like many of their songs the arrangement was often toyed with, not least by the singer who over time added many an ad - lib to the lyrics. As it was performed on every Led Zep show, this enabled the song to retain a freshness.

The first ad-lib I recall was when he inserted the line ''you are the children of the sun'' during the version to be heard on the classic bootleg Going To California from their performance in Berkeley on September 14 1971. From 1973 onwards 'Does anybody remember laughter?‘’ was an expected insert after the line ‘’and the forest will echo with laughter.’’

By 1975, Robert had changed the line ‘’your stairway’’ to ‘’our stairway’’ adding the line ‘’that’s all we got.’’ As I witnessed in awe from the side of the stage during their 1980 Over Europe performances , Robert added ‘’I keep chopin’ and changin'’’ as they led into the climax.

Post Zep, Robert has sang Stairway To Heaven’’ it a mere four times – at Live Aid in 1985, the Atlantic 40th anniversary show in 1988, a sweet truncated version with Jimmy Page in a TV studio in Japan in 1994 and at the Led Zeppelin O2 tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun where he proclaimed after the song ‘’Ahmet we did it!’’

Well now he has done it again….

The obvious question is why now and why on this occasion?

There’s no doubt it was a special occasion being a concert staged by the ex - Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor. Andy has had serious cancer health issues and staged this concert in aid of Cancer Awareness Trust.

As well as performing on the night, Robert donated his personal gold disc of Led Zeppelin IV for the auction –as he put it ''our not so difficult fourth album.'' A part of this was featured on the video stream and it had clocked an initial £50,000 bid.“I love this music and I still love it now very much although I get a bit coy and shy when I have to go near it because it was such a long time ago,” he said.

In an interview with Led Zep News guitarist Kenwyn House revealed that Robert Plant chose to perform Stairway To Heaven after a wealthy donor agreed to donate a six-figure sum to charity if he did so.

So, a special occasion deems a special song for a very worthy cause.

It says everything for Robert’s ease with the Zep legacy, that he could perform this once millstone around his neck with such dignity.

As we know Stairway To Heaven became much maligned and a victim of much parody – and let’s not mention that farcical version by a disgraced not so all round entertainer.

Although he was quick to decry it in the immediate post Zep years, I happen to think Robert is rightly proud of the song, as he is the whole Zep legacy.

Who can forget his tearful reaction to the Wilson sisters and Jason’s performance at the Kennedy Honours in 2012?

So, with none of the pressure of performing it on a big stage and at a pressurised Zep related occasion, he was able to slot it in at this charity event with little fuss.

It worked majestically….

With an ad- hoc line up with few rehearsals, the arrangement was always going to be more loose than tight. That mattered little, as his vocal phrasing was absolutely spot on and what a joy it was to hear him sing this song with a calm control. Some subtle backing vocals aided the tranquil mood.

Here’s the thing – Robert Plant sang it as though he really meant it – confident in his skin at revisiting a major part of his past. Looking good with the mic off held in that familiar pose we know so well.

I wonder what was going through his mind? I know for me it prompted so many precious memories.

There were no ad-libs this time in what was out a fairly straight rendering – the guitar solo was neat and compact and they were back in for the grand finale. Here, Robert slowed things down and the key with it avoiding any strained vocals and he even sang the last section ‘’To be a rock and not to roll’’ for a second time – making it a unique arrangement. He did retain the ''our Stairway'' sentiment.

It was also unique for being the only time he has performed Stairway To Heaven without Jimmy Page...

The final ‘’and she’s buying’’ line was delivered with a delicate finesse – watching it prompted some instant flashbacks.

Momentarily I was back at Earls Court as the mirrorballs spun above them, back in that field just outside Stevenage when they came back to reclaim their crown (''so many people who've helped us over the years - no more people more important than yourselves who who came here on a blind date -this is for you all of yer'') and at home in 1985 watching the TV as the camera panned out to 90,00 watching them re group in Philadelphia for Live Aid.

I also thought about all the much missed friends and Zep comrades who are no longer around to enjoy this special moment...

All that was enough to prompt a huge lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.

Then Robert really sealed it.

Firstly he dedicated the performance to Andy:

“I know that in this contemporary age of digital stuff there’s every likelihood that other people will see that,” he said, facing Taylor. ���So if they do, I offer it up to you and your success and to the whole deal that has happened here today and the future of it all.

And also so it’s not just that, I offer it up to Led Zeppelin, wherever they are”

Andy Taylor replied ‘’God bless ‘em there’s a lot of drummers in the sky we love.’’

Let's ponder on that statement...

It felt like he was giving the song back to his former bandmates and back to his audience – To the privileged few who were lucky enough to witness this special occasion and beyond that to countless fans like me and you.

Deep in the heart of the Cotswold's on an October Saturday evening Robert reclaimed a major part of his history and ours.

It’s likely he may never ever sing Stairway To Heaven this song again and if he doesn’t, it’s had a suitably poignant send off.

There was none of the pressure of the previous post Led Zep performances. It happened for a great cause and for a great fellow Midlands based musician.

I am aiming to be up in the Midlands in a few days’ time for the Saving Grace featuring Suzi Dian gig at the Birmingham Symphony Hall.

I am eagerly looking forward to it, not least after witnessing the YouTube video of this Andy Taylor tribute. For at 75 he is singing so brilliantly and his enjoyment as to where he is at in these advancing years is both inspiring and infectious.

Knowing that Robert Plant is at one with Led Zeppelin’s most famous song makes it all just a little bit more comforting.

As the song states ‘’If you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last’’

I’m still listening to Robert Plant intensely – as are countless others…

MY 200 FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL-TIME

(Revised 2024 Edition)

To my way of thinking, a list of favorite albums changes over time. At any moment, there might be as many as 300 or 400 albums that are good enough to make a favorites list of 200. Where and how to cut is the question. I do a new list whenever the old one feels outdated to me. The criteria I use is pretty basic. I choose my favorite records to listen to, and those that get played more often are ranked higher. But my listening habits change from time to time, so when an album I love doesn't get played as often because I'm getting tired of it, it falls to a lower spot on the list, or disappears altogether. If I haven't played it in awhile, and it sound fresh to me, it goes back into regular rotation, and subsequently climbs higher on the list. I go through periods when I listen to one genre more than another, and that can also affect where the album lands on the list. Playability is the most important factor. That's why an album that has one great side that gets played all the time while the other side is ignored, won't rank as high as one that I enjoy playing from start to finish. And critics lists are things I often read, but completely ignore when it comes to doing my own. My list reflects my tastes, and my biases only.

This is my first revision since March of 2023. There are 28 new additions to the list this time marked with an asterisk. And, in case you're wondering, there were five artists that placed at least five albums on the list. They were The Rolling Stones (13), The Beatles (8), and The Beach Boys, Steely Dan, and Tom Petty each had five (though four of Petty's were with The Heartbreakers, and the fifth was a solo album). Here's my list, and I hope it encourages you to explore something you might not have heard, or to pull something out you may not have played in awhile.

OKAY last night was the best night ever, but I came home so tired I almost passed out on my bed as soon as I touched it lol

The night was amazing and I took some photos, but I wasn't on my phone a lot bc I told myself to enjoy it with my big ol' eyes

They played for almost TWO hours – I think – at no time did I stop singing, jumping and headbanging because this was the closest thing I had to actually see LZ irl and I was having the time of my life!!!

Last night I posted the setlist (or most of what I remembered of it), I was on the front row, right in front of the guy playing as Robert — WHO, DARE I MENTION, changed outfits THREE times into these:

Anyways, after all of that they didn't play any acoustics :c but they did play lesser known songs/songs Led Zeppelin didn't play live too often or at all, which I appreciate :]

I screamed compliments at the guys playing as JPJ, JP and JB because GODDD THE PURE TALENT THOSE MEN HAVE??!?!

When it finished, everyone started asking for one more song – which ended up being four more songs JAJAKSJ they were Kashmir, Immigrant song, The Song Remains The Same and Communication Breakdown (I think)

I tried asking Bonzo for the drumsticks since JPJ and JP had given their guitar picks away to some people on the crowd, but he very kindly denied it because drumsticks are expensive JKWJEEK

When I came out of the bar they were playing in, my ears were completely muffled, my legs were sore, my voice sounded funny and my head hurt so much uhhhggg but I feel much better now :]

Anyways that was it – if they ever do another show, I'm going to see them again hehe

Grooming.... let's talk about it:

Let's start back in 1919. Charlie Chaplin, who would become one of the most famous and celebrated movie stars of all time, was 29 when he married 16 year old aspiring actress Mildred Harris. Their marriage only lasted 2 years. In 1924, Chaplin repeated the pattern with another 16 year old, Lita Gray. He met Lita when she was just 6 and began taking her on dates around the age of 12.

1954 -- Sam Cooke meets a 12-year old Aretha Franklin and brings her to his hotel room. Before her father interrupted, Aretha said the conversation "took another turn."

In 1957, 23 year old Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin, 13 year old Myra Brown. She still believed in Santa.

Also in 1957, 16 year old Anna Mae Bullock met 24 year old Ike Turner. He quickly took her into his band, helped make her a star, and began to treat the newly christened "Tina" as if he owned her. They married 6 years later. Tina once wrote that she was afraid not to accept his proposal.

In 1959, Elvis Presley met his future wife. He was 25 and she was 14. They stayed in touch via phone and letters for the next 2 1/2 years. At that time, Elvis took her on a drug romp to Vegas, followed by moving her into his Graceland mansion. They didn't marry until 1967. While both parties claimed that Priscilla was a virgin on her wedding night, biographer Susan Finstad makes a strong case that this could not be true. Priscilla herself has admitted that she & Elvis slept in the same bed and that Elvis "taught (her) other ways to please him." Elvis reportedly had a predeliction for 14 year old girls, both before and after his marriage to Priscilla.

Chuck Berry was arrested and found guilty of transporting an underage girl across state lines for immoral purposes, spending two years in jail in 1960.

In 1969, Sable Starr, queen of the so-called "baby groupies", had a brief relationship with Iggy Pop. She was 13. He later wrote a song about it. Starr had sexual relationships with many other band members, including encouters with David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Rod Stewart.

It's 1972 and Rock stars are still having sex with little girls and everyone knows it, but no one does anything about it. Lori Mattix tells of losing her virginity at age 14 to David Bowie. She went on to start "dating" Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page that same year, a relationsihp that began when Page's manager kidnapped her and brought her to Jimmy's hotel room. Page kept Lori essentially locked up in his house for most of their 18 months together. The "baby groupie" also reports a sexual relationship with Mick Jagger when she was just 17.

In 1973, married singer Marvin Gaye met and pursued 17 year old Janis Hunter. He wrote "Let's Get it On" as a tribute to his lust for her. Marvin took his teen date to dinner shortly after they met, where he bribed the waiter to bring her alcohol, then had sex with her later that night. They had a baby by the time she was 18, and married in 1977. The marriage lasted just 3 years.

In 1975, Steven Tyler purchased the guardianship of a 16 year old girl (Julia Holcomb) from her mother when he was 27 so that he could legally take her with him across state lines while he was on tour.

In 1978, Ted Nugent also purchases the guardianship of a teenager from her parents. He was 30, Pele Massa was 17. Years later, Ted reportedly received oral sex from a 12 year old Courtney Love.

March 10, 1977. One of the most well-known cases. Director Roman Polanski drugs and rapes 13 year old Samantha Gailey. Allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge, Polanski nevertheless fled to France before sentencing and remains exiled from the United States. He has not been exiled, however, from Hollywood and continues to make movies and win awards to this day.

Eagles drummer and vocalist Don Henley was arrested in 1980 in Los Angeles after paramedics were called to his home to save a naked 16-year-old girl who was overdosing on cocaine and Quaaludes.

Colored over as a a "grand romance" and a "decades long relationship", Celine Dion was 12 years old when 38 year old Rene Angelil became her manager. They went public with their relationship when she was 19.

n 1984, Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman started dating Mandy Smith. She was 13. Although they did not marry until she was 18, Mandy says she was 14 when they first had sex. Mr. Wyman has never been investigated, much less prosecuted.

Red Hot Chili Peppers' lead Anthony Kiedis readily admits to having sex with a 14 year old girl when he was 23. According to him, once he confirmed her age he "had sex with her again." In 1986, the 24-year old musician began dating 16 year old Ione Skye.

In 1990, 16 year old Mayte Garcia's mother sent a video of her belly-dancing to Prince. He arranged to meet her, confirmed she was 16 and a year later moved her into his house. When she was 19, he initiated a sexual relationshi by informing her it was time to go on birth control. They married when she was 22 and he was 37. Before Mayte, Prince met "Anna Fantastic" when she was 15. At 17, she moved into his compound where they had a two year long relationship.

In 1991, 32 year old director Luc Besson met and eventually married model Maïwenn Le Besco when she was 15. Their relationship inspired his movie Léon: The Professional (1994), which followed an emotional relationship between an adult man and a young girl.

In 1993, Jerry Seinfeld picked up a high school student in a public park. He was 39 and she was 17. He and Shoshanna Lonstein dated for four years -- through her college years.

Also in 1993, MC Ren of N.W.A. was accused of raping and impregnating a 16 year old girl in the group's tour bus. The case never went to trial, however a paternity test showed that he was the father of the girl's baby.

Noted pedophile R Kelley secretly married R&B singer Aaliyah in 1994 when she was 15 and he was 27. They met when she was 12 and he later helped write and produce her first album -- "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number."

In 1995, teen star Brandy (age 16) started dating 21-year-old Boyz II Men member Wanya Morris. Keeping their relationship under wraps due to her age proved too stressful for the couple and they broke up soon after.

In 1997, Woody Allen should have become notorious when he married his de facto step-daughter. Though she was 21 at the time of the wedding, the two met when she 8. No matter the spin, the facts are stark. This wasn't the only time Allen dated a much younger woman. Actress Babi Christina Engelhardt began a years-long love affair with Allen when she was 16 and he was 41. When Allen was 42, he romanced 17-year-old actress and high school senior Stacey Nelkin.

It's the early-mid 2000s and "That 70s Show" actor, Wilmer Valderrama, continues to date teenage girls in an effort to deny that he is now over 30. He dated 16-year-old Mandy Moore despite being four years her senior. At age 24, Valderrama dated 17-year-old Lindsay Lohan though they kept the relationship a secret until her 18th birthday in 2004. In 2010, the 30-year-old began dating 17-year-old Demi Lovato.

In 2001, Fast & Furious star Paul Walker (28 at the time) was dating 16-year old Aubrianna Atwell. This was not Paul's last time to date a teenager. His girlfriend at the time of his death, Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell, was 23 to his 40. They met when she was 16.

Back in 2004, 26 year old Joel Madden and Hilary Duff did the familiar dance of being "just friends" until her 18th birthday in 2006. When asked about whether she was intimate with Madden or not in a 2015 interview with Cosmopolitan, Duff stated, "I had a 26-year-old boyfriend. So everyone can make their own assumptions about what I was doing."

In 2005, clean cut TV heartthrob Chad Michael Murray begins dating a girl in high school. They get engaged when she turns 18 and Murray calls her a "little sweetheart" and says they have been together "for awhile."

Similarly, in 2006, co-stars Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia began dating. She was 17. He was 12 years her senior.

Actor Doug Hutchison married 16-year-old Courtney Stodden in 2011, when he was 51 years old. The dysfunctional pair became famous as reality stars, with Courtney undergoing extensive plastic surgery to maintain their image.

Rapper Tyga and Kylie Jenner began "hanging out" an awful lot beginning in 2014 when she was 16 and he was 24. They dated on and off after that, though they became a lot more openly "on" after her 18th birthday in 2016.

In late 2018, 44 year old Leonardo DiCaprio publicly reveals that he is dating 21 year old model Camilla Morrone. It's not the age gap that puts Leo on our list, it's the fact that he's known Camilla since she was 11.

2018 -- 14 year old Millie Bobby Brown innocently revealed that rapper, Drake, age 31, has been close friends with her, for the last year giving her advice about boys. He texts her, "I miss you." This is the same Drake who has, more than once, skated around that "just friends until she turns 18" line -- most recently with 18 year old model Bella Harris.

Guys, this isn't a friendship. This is GROOMING. No one will stop it. They'll "date." He'll have sex with her, probably in a couple of years. No one will care because he's a man and a star.

NO ONE WILL CARE UNLESS WE START MAKING PEOPLE CARE.

Make them care. No free passes. No 2nd chances. A ruined career is the least they deserve. It's not cute. THIS IS NOT OK.

The Freddie Mercury Connection

How unlikely that one of the most revered rockstars of all time was born in Zanzibar (an island off the eastern coast of Africa) to Indian immigrants, right? But, after all, how likely was it that Elvis Presley, with his smoldering looks, swiveling hips, and revolutionary musical talent, came out of a dirt-poor family of sharecroppers from Tupelo, Mississippi? I find the parallels between Elvis and Freddie Mercury fascinating, and there are many in my head. Ready Freddie?

Considered two of the best and most recognizable voices in popular music, Elvis and Freddie both had an incredible, almost unparalleled, stage presence, they came from an unlikely milieu unrelated to entertainment, and died in a heartbreaking way in their 40s. I find the way they are remembered and cherished very similar.

But let's start from the beginning! When he was at boarding school in Panchgani, near Bombay, in the late '50s, Freddie Mercury, then known as Farrokh Bulsara, formed his own band, with his schoolmates Bruce, Farang, Derrick, and Victory. They were called "The Hectics". Surprisingly, Freddie didn't sing, Bruce did. Freddie was too shy, so he played piano in the background. "We all wanted to be Elvis," Bruce remembers. The girls from another school screamed, "just like they'd heard girls the world over were beginning to do when faced with current idols". They played lots of Elvis, who was one of the rock 'n roll idols back then, but also Fats Domino and Little Richard, two of Freddie's favorite artists.

That shyness that relegated him to the background in school seems to have gone by the time we meet him again in England in the late '60s, singing with his blues band Ibex. He opened his shows with "Jailhouse Rock", a song he also performed with Queen many times. It allowed him to "indulge in gleeful histrionics, but for some time the rest of the group were unsure about Freddie's stage antics." How wrong they were! See for yourself in this live version from 1982.

In 1979, two years after Elvis' sudden death, Freddie wrote a tribute song to his idol, in the form of a rockabilly pastiche. It's one of Queen's most famous songs to this day: "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". He notoriously wrote it in 10 minutes while lounging in the bathroom. “I did that on the guitar, which I can't play for nuts," he said to Melody Maker, "and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It's a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework,” he continued. “I couldn't work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think.”

Everything, from the production to the lyrics is a call back to early rock 'n roll music. His voice on that track sounds so much like Elvis' that some people think it's an Elvis song. He said about it: “My voice does sound a bit like Elvis Presley’s on ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. That wasn’t something I was trying to do, naturally, it was pure coincidence. It’s all sung rather low, so then you soon come close to Elvis, especially with such a 50s-type song". Freddie even kicks it up a notch in the video by wearing a black leather suit (albeit with kneepads!) and styling his hair like Elvis did.

Aptly for a song with a rockabilly feel, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was Queen's first number-one hit in the States. I don't know if it was because she had heard that song, but Lisa Marie Presley, then only a child, said in an interview that she loved Queen's theatrics and that the first concert she attended was Queen in LA in the late '70s. She gave one of her father's scarves to Freddie. Even though he never met Elvis, Freddie cherished the scarf for the rest of his (short) life.

Dollar Bin at 150

Well, it happened again: you wasted more than a few perfectly good hours in my dumpster bin of a record collection. We've arrived at post #150 so let's recap the nonsense that's occurred since we hit 100 back in early summer:

There was some serious Shakey action. We spent six different posts on Neil Young's incomparable Zuma, ranging from the record's sonic relationship with my parents' antique vacuum, to its most bleak, altered, brutal, kaleidoscopic and yearning moments.

Young's Trans merited nearly as deep a dive. We started with an epic teenage tale before declaring it the best of all midlife crisis records. I took a pause to vent my fury regarding Neil's current doings and then went fairly deeply into the record's thematic implications for my own biography, and for Neil's.

What's more, I complained about everything on the Archives 3 sampler that does not sound like a demo by The Cure, identified Hitchhiker as a core part of Young's incredible legacy, cursed Stephen Stills yet again, waxed poetic and personal about Silver and Gold, recommended Prairie Wind for laxative adverts, voted against Cranky, Silly and Nasty's American Dream, got tipsy and blissful while listening to Tuscaloosa in paradise and demanded answers about my missing copy of Hawks and Doves.

And then my Cousin Kris died. I did what I could to celebrate his passing and his incomparable legacy by offering up my own essential songs list and through an appreciation of his best work with Rita.

(Now that Kris is heavenward, busy guffawing with Leonard Cohen, two perfectly reformed drunks in a heavenly choir, Prairewolf has vaulted to the pinnacle of my family's current musical achievement.)

While we're at it, here's a wonderful slice of Kris's second best work with Rita. Why isn't this song being covered by all our current divas from Adele to Chappell Roan as we speak?

Maybe it's because no one could ever sing anything like Kris and Rita...

(J.D. Souther's passing was noted as well. But comparing Souther to Kristofferson is like... well, it's not even worthy of a metaphor.)

What else happened on our way to 150?

I initiated yet to be consummated renassainces for Edie Brickell, Carly Simon, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ry Cooder and Michael Penn. Indeed, Carly Simon merited two posts. That's right, Carly Simon!

Also, the ladies' fierce penchant for Paul Simon merited wonder.

Linda Thompson was feted as well as Tom Waits' 70's persona. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings' most obscure track was deemed equal to their latest weeper. Willie Nelson's 615th buddy record garnered praise, as did Lucinda William's Tom Petty tribute. Both records are good, but neither holds a candle to Dogs on the Run or the Woods Bands' long lost and churning pop nugget.

Sandy Denny remained a Dollar Bin fixation, of course. She sang the hell out of a few murder ballads, as well as her own greatest hit and a few Jackson C. Frank tunes, Plus she was way over my head in 1993 and put Led Zeppelin to shame.

What lies ahead, you ask? Well, for one thing, we've got to get serious and dedicate ourselves to a whole bunch more Joni Mitchell Mondays.

But before we begin the quest to 200 let's revel for a moment in my Dodgers' stirring pennant victory; Randy Newman sings everything, and this song most especially, ironically. But for the next week or so I'm just gonna act like everyone at Dodger Stadium and pretend that I don't know any better...

Storia Di Musica # 313 - AA.VV. - She Rocks Volume 1, 2017

Un giovane chitarrista di origini italiane (i nonni arrivarono negli Stati Uniti dalla Lomellina) nel 1978, quando ha appena 18 anni, manda una cassetta e una trascrizione del leggendario pezzo The Black Page al suo creatore, Frank Zappa. Il brano si chiama così perchè lo spartito è così pieno di segni musicali (punti, segni, note) ed è famoso perchè di una complessità mostruosa. Zappa impressionato dal talento del giovane chitarrista lo contatta e dopo che il nostro giovane eroe finisce la scuola, lo invita a Los Angeles, gli fa un provino e lo stipendia prima come trascrittore ufficiale e poi, dal 1980 fino al 1985, lo porta sul palco e in studio a registrare, presentandolo come il suo "little Italian virtuoso" e gli assegna spettacolari assolo definiti "impossible guitar parts". Quel giovane chitarrista è Steve Vai, unanimemente considerato uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi. Oltre ai dischi, ai concerti, ai premi, al ruolo di innovatore dello strumento (leggendarie le chitarre Ibanez Jem con lui sviluppate) il suo è sempre stato un lavoro di ricerca sia strumentale sia umano: cacciatore di talenti prima, e poi produttore ed editore musicale. Nel 1999 infatti fonda insieme a Ray Scherr, il fondatore di Guitar Center, la più grande catena di negozi di strumenti musicali di tutte le Americhe (con oltre 300 negozi) una etichetta discografica, Favored Nations, con il preciso obiettivo di sviluppare la musica chitarristica, di scovare nuovi artisti e di produrre quelli già affermati. Il primo disco prodotto è del 2000, Coming To Your Senses del chitarrista jazz fusion Frank Gambale, di lì in poi è un susseguirsi di grandi nomi. A metà del decennio successivo, Vai sente la necessità di rispondere, con un disco, ad una domanda: Who says the ladies can’t rock?.

Per questo in collaborazione con l'associazione Women’s International Music Network mette su una compilation, insieme con Brad Tolinski, direttore di una delle bibbie dei chitarristi e chitarriste, Guitar World, di strepitose chitarriste, a cui dà il titolo di She Rocks Vol.1, sottotitolo: A Collection of Kick-Ass Guitar Goddesses, che esce nel gennaio del 2017. In scaletta 11 brani di 11 chitarriste che comprendono diversi generi, dal jazz rock al blues, ma che spingono forte verso l'hard rock e l'heavy metal, per un assortimento niente male. C'è una delle scoperte di Vai, la tedesca Yasi Hofer (qui presente con una torrida sua composizione, Cosmic Star), c'è la leggenda del rock femminile Lita Ford, delle Runwayas, che si unisce alle Lez Zeppelin, una tribute band femminile dei mitici Led Zeppelin, cantando The Lemon Song (uno dei testi più maliziosi ed erotici del catalogo di Plant e soci, nello slang "lemon" è una metafora del pene) accompagnata da Steph Paynes, che nella compilation regala una meravigliosa The Sun At Her Eastern Gate (Payne è stata anche scrittrice e giornalista del rock per riviste come il New Music Express e Rolling Stone). C'è il blues di U Know What I Like di Kat Dyson (che è stata più volte la lead guitar dei tour internazionali di Zucchero), il trascinante heavy metal di Transmogrify, brano scritto da Orianthi, chitarrista e polistrumentista australiana che accompagnò Micheal Jackson nel suo ultimo tour This Is It. Jackson era un grande estimatore di chitarriste, tanto che nella compilation c'è pure il contributo di un'altra sua storica sessionista, Jennifer Batten, che lo ha accompagnato nei tour di Bad, Dangerous e History: qui è presente la sua In The Aftermath. Si passa dal jazz rock di Sarah Longfield (The Taxi Time Travel Task Force) alle sonorità sofisticate di Yvette Young, uno dei talenti più puri in circolazione (Hydra), alle super prove di nomi più famosi come Nita Strauss (la chitarrista di Alice Cooper), che contribuisce con Pandemonium e Gretchen Menn con Scrap Metal. Da ricordare anche il brano di Nili Brosh, A Matter Of Perception, la chitarrista è stata per anni star degli spettacoli musicali del Cirque Du Soleil e insieme ad altre protagoniste di questa compilation suonerà in una tribute band, The Iron Maidens, che omaggia al femminile la musica degli inglesi Iron Maiden. In copertina c'è un disegno di Laura B. Whitmore, musicista, produttrice e ex manager di importantissime etichette discografiche, che nel 2012 fondò la WiMN per fornire supporto, informazioni e un senso di comunità alle donne in tutti gli aspetti del settore musicale, compresi artisti, addetti ai lavori, educatori e studenti.

La dicitura Vol.1 mi ha fatto sempre sperare in un Vol.2 che al momento non è ancora arrivato. Tuttavia questo disco è prova viva che " A Lady Can Surely Rocks".
