After Bride Of Po
Po: Let me guess… “I told you so”?
Tigress: No. I didn’t want to make you feel worse about the whole Lu-Shi thing. Next time, though, I hope you’ll listen to me when I have suspicions instead of say “you’re just jealous!”
Po: I’m Kung Fu sorry! I can’t help what Nickelodeon makes us do!

Kung Fu Panda 4-All the budget went to the animation (spoilers)
Hey all, its me, the guy who everyday make a tour around this site but almost never talk. How are ya?
Two days ago something arrived to the cinema's screens, something that me and everyone were waiting for since 2018, the fourth film and the begginig of the new kung fu panda triology.
You know? When I sat on that theather seat with my friends to see what Dreamworks had prepared for us, I told myself; "Maybe that post I made a while ago throwing shit at what seemed like Kfp 4 was going to be was a bit hard, I hope I can come out regretting what I said that time"
And as soon as the credits ended, it was clear to me, I dont regret a shit. Maybe it was a little exaggerated, compared to what a megamind fan would think about the terrible sequel they made, but still: the film is crappy and boring most of the time. But why?
I'm going to explain some points.
1- Po? Is that you?
I don't know you guys, but i don't think the panda we knew in the end of the third film is the same as this one. Seriously, he share more comparisons with the Po from the legend of awessonless than the one from the films, maybe its a personal thing but it feels that way. At least in the beggining of the film feel like that.
And I don't know what he was thinking about when he decided to follow a thief he doesn't know at all and who tried to steal in his own palace, and that suspiciously know who is the chameleon, whose were her plans, her past, where she lived, where exacly they had to pass through avoiding all the guard inside her home, why the others thiefs of the city hate her so much... With Po's experience with criminals this is like a chef throwing water on a pan with boiling oil, it's obvious what is going to happen.
2- Zheng- Female Nick Wilde but without charisma or half of his intelligence.
I knew it from the first moment I saw Zheng's desing, the people who know me can corroborate that; her facial expressions, her tone while she talk, her animal race, her position as thief, her final when she is part of the justice same as the protagonist... it's clearer than water I think.
Everyone could say this is forgivable if she's smart, but surprise, she's not. This character is just an absurd try of this company for """"conect with infant audience""""(I don't know in what sense, I supose for the cute design, idk). But the point is, the supposed objective of the hollywood companies is give the new generetions better things than we got at their age, but what I see is laziness for write a decent scrip only for take an advantage of a known IP and make easy money. Even the children have quality standars, this is not the dragon warrior and of course this is not kung fu panda.
And talking about the dragon warrior, having our deep and lovely Tigress with her magnific development or Tai Lung back from the spirit realm... why in the hell this character exists?! Oh yeah, for being trending topic in twitter for three days. Yay...
3- The furious five and Shifu, for us : our pretty boys, and for Dreamworks: living jokes.
What made Kung Fu Panda what it is, is not the fucking panda, it's them. They're the inspiration for Po, their allies, the royale representation of kung fu and the ones which everything started with.
Po's a comic relief, and his mission is show his development in part using his humor, but the humor in this film barely works because of the lazy script. Something that even the talented Jack Black himself can't fix, beacuse his only role there is dublin his character, unlike the rest of the residents of the Jade Palace except Dustin Hoffman.
Seth Rogen (Mantis) himself even said that he wasn't even contact by Dreamworks in the first place, only for make a scream in the credits, that's sad beacause he really wanted to see Mantis on the screen. And I know and I understand that the five are expensive, but cmon, they could just simply change the voice actors and offset it with a good script but that's not the case of course. Their role in the film is being a counter for Po's constant jokes, for not to saturate the spectator with jokes, now that's not in there anymore, thank you Dreamworks.
4-The chameleoooohhn and her "motivation".
I can't say much, basically because out of her design she's nonsense. She says that because of her size, she was reyected for being a kung fu warrior.
Yeah of course but only one little thing, what about Shifu? Viper, a warrior without tips? Mantis, literally a dawn insect? Master Oogway, a TURTLE? The masters goose? C'mon even there's a fucking master chicken! Don't talk shit chameleon!
Her importance for the plot? Its almost a lie, the others villains had links to important characters; Tai Lung (with his link to Shifu's past), Shen (with his link to Po's past) or Kai (with his link to Oogway's past), all of them related to important characters. And her? To zheng's past and present I guess? But again, anyone know this character. She's like a villain from a Disney show, you know the type of villain who say a lot of things but at the end, she don't support nothing to the lore.
And her personality is like a mix of all the previous villains, and this sounds good right? HAHAH nope. Do you remember when as a child you mixed all the plasticines of all the colors to create the final color and you ended up with a color similar to poop? well that's exacly how her personality feels like.
5- Po's dads; the only reason they're there is because they ran out of characters to make the film.
The tittle itself tell everything, they don't do anything for the script in all the film, and their objective could be done since the start.
The script of the film except for the final looks like a draft which they didn't know how to complete, everyone who watch it can see it perfecly. The animation, the music and the backgrounds are the only things notable here.
6- Tai Lung and the cheapness nostalgia.
Fan service is not necesarry bad, above all if is used in a good way, they sold us Tai Lung as a miracle but his importance for the plot feels just like a Stan Lee cameo, I like Tai Lung I can say that. But this is too weak, Shen and Kai are only characters in the background who don't do nothing except being defeated or make facial expressions (I don't even joke that Shen would show respect to Po considering what we saw in the second movie, and Kai wasn't supposed to be destroyed as a spirit, what the hell is he doing here again? *sign* I'll to stop trying to make sense of this).
By the way, anyone else think that the dragon warrior role is understimated? I mean Shifu obligated Po to transfers the role to another one just because yes, i mean he only has been the dragon warrior for less than 5 years and now they want to replace him with a random. Everything just for at the end, he choosed a thief with at least 30 crimes registred and who was a traitor during the 75% of the movie.
7- The """""""""humor"""""""", except they forgot the parts where I must to laugh.
Seeing nonsense hits only beacuse yes stopped of being funny a long time ago, and no, I don't want to talk about the bunnies of the portrait because I would get sick. I had to go to the cinema drunk to endure the filler that the movie had, no joke, it was the only way to laugh at those jokes.
So I think about applying the same method as in any movie with bad jokes, ignoring the jokes. I tried to do the same thing but with the pace that the film managed, such a thing was impossible, the pace of the movie seems to be made for Tiktoker children with attention deficit. From the chaos in the quarry until Po takes the bitc... uhg fox out of prison, only 10 fucking minutes pass, all of that for what? So that you feel like the baseless information and the nonsensical plot that they tell us is of any use? they could simply make a non-canonical short and that's it, but no, yes or they were going to tell us a story written by rotten old men who spend the entire day watching Tik Tok. It's not going to be that the child who sees this doesn't get bored, we know that much today's children don't have many neurons as they say, but even to make movies for them you have to have a certain talent.
In some point at the beguining Po make a joke about the ausence of the furious five saying that at least he had them in cardboard posters, and this would be a good joke. Only if the stupid film could be prove that the franquise can do something memorable without the furious five, but again, that's not the case.
Don't have any respect for this movie, look what it had with you. I understand that it is enjoyable because of the animation but it does not go beyond that line, it destroys important things about the canon and spoils its teaching about the need for change by treating it in a terrible way.
Coclusion: KFP 4 is just another Po's adventure as Shifu says, it won't tell nothing to you or make you feel different, it's a shame but after Megamind 2 I imagined something like this. It's a dark era for film, expecially the animated one so like Scar said; Be prepare, there're worse things waiting for us.
Do you want something with real quality? You don't even need kung fu panda 1,2 or 3, for make it easy to this film let's take this marvelous example; kung fu panda: secrets of the scroll (2016). You'll say; "An animated short, this is not like-" Shhh Just watch it, you won't regret it.
If you think I'm wrong in something, just rewatch the film. And if still you aren't agreed with me, well, I respect you and I'm happy you like it. I wish I could love it as you do, but that doesn't mean that the movie isn't bad, because if you watch it with your brain on or remembering the previous movies it's terrible.
. Me? I've to write a story, I love you all. Except you, Dreamworks, I'm mad with you, expecially when you do this at the same day as Akira Toriyama's death :(

my version of Kfp4 for my au/rewrite
hello! how are you? As the title says, I'm going to rewrite kfp4, but before that, I'm going to say a few things first, firstly, I'm not going to write it as if it were a book story, because honestly it's lazy, and secondly:
What did I think of the film?
good, 7.0/10, I won't say more than that, since that's not the focus, and third:
What is a film rewrite?
according to Google "It's a search to really improve the narrative, and not just the formatting of the script" that's it, that's all I wanted to say, now, let's get to the rewriting...
everything would start with a festival, nothing very important, just a celebration, but at a certain point, Shifu tells Po that as long as Po is still the warrior dragon, Shifu will be the spiritual leader of the Valley Of Peace, which made Po think...
the scene cuts, we go to Po in the peach tree at night, but Tigress was approaching with his dinner, and Po says what happened, he is worried, if to become the warrior dragon he needs to go through an enemy as powerful as everyone he have faced so far, what could be coming? to Po and the future dragon warrior, but Tigress said not to worry, because if he could defeat Tai Lung, the future dragon warrior would be able to defeat whoever he was, but before Po could thank him, an explosion came from the village!!
it was an invasion! the villagers screamed, the furious five fought with the guards who protected their leader's palanquin! Po ran to the palanquin, but was caught by a cage! nothing brittle, but then Po only saw the silhouette of the leader
"What an honor to meet the Dragon Warrior face to face..."
Po is kidnapped, and the furious five still can't go after their friend, they had to protect the valley from the domain of the mysterious reptile, and after a while, they arrived in the Jupiter City.
Po (who had slept for a long time on the trip) woke up, in a room that looked like a closed area, and saw her... the leader with he staff...
"who are you?! what do you want with the valley of peace??!"' asked Po..
"no one knows my real name since I took control of this city.. heh.. they call me The Chameleon."
Chameleon told her story to the panda, who left home to become a Kung Fu master, but was devalued several times, and realized that only the lucky ones got a chance, the failures didn't... (as she spoke, the staff did the chameleon scenes in the past with her chi, what was that cool idea for me)
After telling her past, Chameleon says that Po is one of those lucky ones, but that everyone paid, when she dominates all of China and shows how powerful she is...
Anyway, the furious five went after Po, and Shifu was left to take care of the valley, but someone appeared during the chaos and the evacuation of the village... Peng!
Peng, who had only come to visit, was scared by the situation, but Shifu explained everything, so, determined, they went help Po
going back to the Chameleon, she would already be invoking Tai lung, and stealing he kung fu (instead of being the villains, let's put the people who are in the spiritual realm, Kai and Fenghuang just because they are super powerful), and instead of invoking Kai through the realm of spirits (she's not going to summon Shen, send him to shit) she made a portal to the realm of demons with her own magic, and in addition to summoning Kai, she also summons the (beautiful, wonderful, absolute) Fenghuang
After stealing their Kung Fu, they manage to escape, but the Chameleon doesn't even care, they are really weak, but just in case, she tells Zhen to go and observe them...
but instead of our three villains coming together, they separate. In this separation, Fenghuang ends up meeting Zhen; Tai Lung with Shifu and Peng; Zai with the furious five.
Fenghuang found out the news from Zhen, about Po being the master of chi, bla bla, and Fenghuang decided to get his Kung Fu back, and Zhen (who was making fun of Fenghuang whenever he could) went along for fun.
Kai, who was still frightening with his blades, made a deal with the furious five, that if he got his Kung Fu back, he wouldn't kill them, anyway, deal made.
and now Tai Lung... well, he changed in the spirit realm, after a loving reunion with his father and being surprised to meet his nephew, they already knew what to do, save Po and stop the Chameleon's domination!
so, until a certain part, the film would separate between: Fenghuang and Zhen, F5 and Kai, Tai Lung and Shifu and Peng
Po (still in prison) would often be visited by a chi version of a chameleon (which would not be done by her, but by the staff in question)
until the 3rd act, Fenghuang and Zhen will develop a friendship and this counts for the rest of the other team, unfortunately I have no idea for a moment between the Chameleon and Zhen
Anyway, in one part everyone is captured by the Chameleon's army except Tai, Kai and Zhen, so the three of them have to go save the day! hehe (and during this time Zhen manages to make friends with Po, as Fenghuang herself comments a lot about her)
anyway, at the end there is an epic fight with that epic form of the chameleon, and in the end the Chameleon would go to the valley of peace to learn Kung Fu with Peng, Kai and Tai return to the spirit realm, in Kai's case more because Po wanted it and Fenghuang, he got a second chance, and went to the valley of peace... and that's it! end!
Sorry for my laziness in writing this, I was a bit unwilling and it would probably be better if I was more motivated
Unfortunately, one thing was left out of all this, the fact that Fenghuang already knew Tai Lung, anyway, maybe I'll make a post about it later, I'll go, bye bye
(@tesla-runner remember when I talked about my rewrite? Well...)

Hi! Thank you for your request! Sorry it took so long. I hope you like your matchups!
In Tokyo Debunker, I match you with...
Haru’s a pretty go with the flow person as well so he likes that you’re the same. He finds it tiring being around people who are too rigid so he thinks you’re great!
He also really likes that you can be mean if needed. He’s a generally kind person but even he recognises that sometimes you have to be firm with people. He thinks it’s a good quality to have.
Since you love the zoo so much, Haru would be delighted to show you all around Jabberwock anytime you want. There are so many amazing creatures there and he hopes you like travelling around there as much as any zoo.
Would love gifting you stuffed animals! I see him as someone who’s handy with a needle and thread so there might even be some handmade plushies coming your way.
He will get rid of bugs for you but they’ll be carried outside rather than killed. Sure, he doesn’t want them in his home either but they’re still living things so he’ll move them somewhere they’ll be more comfortable.
In Honkai Star Rail, I match you with...
Because of Gepard’s work, he needs to have complete trust in anyone he dates. So he’s very comforted by the fact that you’re a trustworthy person.
It also makes him feel better knowing you’re not easily manipulated. He never wants you to be in danger so that’s something that puts his mind at ease.
If you ever fell like talking about your latest history obsession, Gepard’s more than happy to lend an ear. It’s not a huge interest of his but he’ll enjoy listening to you talk about something you’re passionate about.
In the same manner, you’ll never have to worry about being interrupted. He values your opinions and will always listen to what you have to say.
Definitely the kind of person to enjoy going on dinner dates. He’s got a hidden passion for food so that fact that you like food as will is a win-win for both of you.

What is it about an often-hungry and kind of lazy panda who is obsessed with kung fu that has resonated with audiences worldwide?
The Kung Fu Panda franchise — now 16 years old and four films in — centers on Po (Jack Black) who, along with his friends (voiced by a star-studded cast including Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogan and Jackie Chan), goes on adventures spanning the mystical and spiritual.
"I think people love pandas and people love kung fu, and we've got a combination," Black tells ABC News.
"The art is so great, I think we've got the best animators in the world. It's kind of like a dance between the voice acting, and these animators who've completed the performance."
For those who haven't seen the films, Po is the designated "Dragon Warrior", a kind of legendary Chosen One who can wield limitless power.
The first film focused on him figuring out who he wanted to be; he discovered more about his parents in the sequel, Kung Fu Panda 2; while Kung Fu Panda 3 saw him begin to pass on his skills to a new generation of panda cubs.
In the latest film, Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) wants Po to become the new Spiritual Leader of the Valley of the Peace, so Po must choose and anoint someone else as the new Dragon Warrior.
While Jolie, Chan and Liu don't return for this film, Bryan Cranston and James Hong reprise their roles as Po's dads. And rapper and actor Awkwafina joins the cast as Zhen, a fox burglar who crosses paths with Po during one of her thieving sprees.
When a shape-shifting sorcerer known as the Chameleon (Viola Davis) and her criminal network make themselves known, Po and Zhen team up to prevent her from getting her hands on the panda's staff of wisdom (which the Chameleon plans to use to summon Po's enemies back from the spirit realm).
"Zhen and Po are like the odd couple of the kung fu world, and it was exciting to explore their differences and watch them grow together," says Awkwafina.
"Zhen brings this scrappy, streetwise energy to the story, challenging Po in unexpected ways."
A mix of East and West
The humour and story of Kung Fu Panda is a part of why the films have charmed audiences globally.
The film series has also proven to be a massive hit in China, a highly lucrative but notoriously difficult market for Hollywood films to succeed in, because of limits the country places on foreign and Western films.
Plot threads often blend aspects of South-East Asian culture, like filial piety and duty to family, with more universal themes of working with others and having the confidence to forge your own path.
Awkwafina says it has meant a lot to her to see the franchise pay homage to Chinese culture.
"I think when [Kung Fu Panda] first came out, there wasn't a lot of movies that really took place [there], exemplifying those cultural traditions in that world," she says.
"So I'm really proud that it existed and to be a part of it now."
Black adds: "You know, any community that feels under-represented, one of the greatest ways to open up the stories to the world is to get creative.
"The ones that you've never heard before are often the most amazing ones."
The latest Kung Fu Panda also comes off the back of other successful animated films like Turning Red and Elemental, which explored similar themes of responsibility and loyalty, and growing up as part of an immigrant family.
"Those I really enjoyed, and I love Kung Fu Panda because they explore what it means to be a kid, have anxiety and what it means to be human I think in a way that's really unique," says Awkwafina.
"And I [want to] just continue watching stories that do that."
Into the future
Both actors say they related to the simple central message — to believe in yourself — that plays out across all the films.
"I definitely can think about certain times in my life, in my career, where I didn't believe in myself," Black says.
"Someone else gave me confidence and believed in me, and then I was able to push through my insecurities, and those moments and those people who gave me that strength mean so much to me, so I relate to it in that way."
Awkwafina adds, "I think it's hard to know when you're doing something right. It's hard to believe in yourself and Jack is right. It does take people to have to help you sometimes."
In terms of their characters' futures, Awkwafina says she wants Po and Zhen to "live, laugh, love".
"I'd like to see Po get even more spiritual," says Black.
"To somehow master the art of meditation and be able to create some inner peace."
Awkwafina jokingly adds: "I want to stop stealing, and we enter a program."

Got tagged by @accidentallylita for a 20 questions for writers thing! Thank you 💜 I'm gonna tag... @tameila, @fantasiawandering, @kabbal, @kaantt and @thisstableground - no pressure at all though.
How many works do you have on AO3?
88. But I still have 44 others over on FFnet.
What's your total AO3 word count?
659,354 (holy crap that's a lot!) and I'm way too lazy to add the FFnet numbers. The FFnet counters are a mess anyway.
What fandoms do you write for?
I have written for... Ready? Go! *deep breath* Harry Potter, Great Mouse Detective, The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean, Kung Fu Panda, Watchmen, Justice League, Discworld, White Collar, Hogan's Heroes, Zorro (the 1950s Disney series), Kaamelott, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the 2012 cartoon and a TMNT 2003 and 1987 crossover missing scene from Turtles Forever) , the Don Camillo stories/films, Cobra Kai, Karate Kid, The Legend Of Vox Machina, and Critical Role. Whew! And that's not counting unpublished WIPs, because then I would have to add ACD Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves and Wooster, or The Pirates! In an Adventure with Musicians Scientists :D It's mostly Critical Role and Vox Machina at the moment, though.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Let's see:
Villains (Justice League Unlimited, Flash's Rogues watch the finale of season 2's near apocalypse on TV in their bar, 442 kudos)
Reading the Colours (TMNT 2012, kid!Mikey having trouble learning to read and a bit of synaesthesia, and kid!Ralp being a good brother, 225 kudos)
Culture Shock (Turtles Forever (TMNT 2003 and 1987 crossover), 2003!Don and 1987!Leonardo having a conversation about danger and stakes and genre shifts, 215 kudos)
After the Sunset (The Mummy, a getting-to-know-each-other scene set just after 'The End' to tie up loose ends and explore character dynamics, 202 kudos)
Wife (Justice League Unlimited, the writers made Captain Cold (of all people XD) mention a wife so I created a character and explored her relationship with her husband and his nemesis, 168 kudos)
Aww 💜 I was kinda surprised by this list, to tell the truth!
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try (oh my god do I try ♫). Currently there's still a couple in my AO3 inbox I haven't responded to yet because I like to take my time (and also I like having that little number beside my inbox on my page 😭)
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oh that's easy. If, a Hogan's Heroes snapshot (<800 words) where I essentially went "hey, what if [character] really had been killed in that scene?" and picture the aftermath.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh that is hard! I have comforting endings, I have peaceful/hopeful endings, I have bittersweet endings with a side of sweet... But just plain happy? I mean, Pas de Deux would end on a thoroughly good and happy note if it weren't for that pesky last sentence ("This summer 1914 is going to be the best summer"). I'd say Perfect Picture has the happiest: it's a (few years into the) future JLU fic set at a Christmas do, PoV Jimmy Olsen, that ends on him taking the titular perfect picture in the immediate wake of a very happy announcement. I love it a lot.
Do you get hate on fics?
No, thank goodness. Something of a miracle in 22+ years of writing online! My beta has, though, because some people are idiots.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do, although it's a recent (ish) development! I've written three kinds of smut: loving and sometimes fumbling between two then three young people who don't a ton of (or any, in some cases) experience, quick and ill-advised between two desperate people convinced they'll die in a few hours, and cosy and warm as a means to (re)connect (two different fandoms) between middle-aged people. Love every one of them.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have! Like the aforementioned TMNT crossover (within the same franchise, bit still, two different shows and fandoms). And, well, it's not exactly crazy, but I wrote a tavern-as-an-afterlife fic in which Sergeants García and Schultz have a little conversation about their respective supposed-to-be enemies. Would that count as "crazy" if they have approximately a century and a few years between their lifetimes?
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't... think so. Can't be sure. Sometimes I post fic here and I've definitely found my Tumblr accounts on those crappy Tumblr mirroring websites, so yeah, probably.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone asked me once if I minded them translating one of my Don Camillo fics into Italian, to which I responded with happy flailing and "not at all, go ahead!" But I never heard back from them. OTOH, I have done the translating :D I translated a Mummy fic into French back in the day (2004) with the author's permission, and I wrote L'éléphant de Carter (Hogan's Heroes) in French then translated it into English.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really. I participated in group projects and big bangs and stuff, but I've written a fic "with four hands".
What's your all-time favorite ship?
It should be an obvious choice, because I have so few I ship actively - you know, not just "sure, I like the idea of them together". For the purposes of the question I will say Pike Trickfoot/Scanlan Shorthalt, from Campaign 1 of Critical Role/The Legend of Vox Machina (it's a slow burn with minimum pining! They both have personal growth! He pursues her but then apologises and asks if they can be friends! Each is the only one who truly sees and perceives the other on that level!). But also I really really love my one-third-canon-character-two-thirds-OCs OT3 set in 1910s Oxford. So... tie? :3
What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have one of those eternal WIPs (more of an idea, really) of a Discworld/Quantum Leap crossover where Sam Beckett Leaps into Sam Vimes who's in the middle of an investigation, which would mean that 1) Sam B has to wrap his mind around the existence of magic and dwarves and trolls and Nobby Nobbs while Sam V and Al Calavicci stare at each other down (Spider-men-pointing-meme style in the end) going "if my guy/my people get(s) hurt by your shenanigans then so help me I will go SQUARE" (and quickly enough work together).
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, apparently? I've been told a few times over the years by readers that they could "hear" the characters speak in their heads, which is the greatest compliment 💜 (especially since English is not my first language, so I'm always worried about things not sounding right!)
What are your writing weaknesses?
Actual plots, especially ones with a bit of complexity in them 😅 I'm the first to admit 80% of my fics are one-shot character exploration (with conflict - internal and external - being resolved via dialogue and/or communication). Also finishing things on time, GOD.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Heh. I'm French and when I write for Hogan's Heroes I often write a French character who canonically (though rarely, gotta respect the ratio) says things in French sometimes. Of course I'll include some! But I always make sure 1) to include a translation/explanation in the notes (AO3 is really great for footnotes) and 2) that it doesn't really require a translation to understand the situation/stakes. I tend to go back and forth on the use of italics for foreign language words.
Now, if I don't know the language as well as I do French (and, more importantly, if the PoV character who hears it speaks that language), I just clarify in the "s/he said", like
"You gotta be kidding me," muttered Bob in [insert language here].
Works in English too, of course, especially if you're having a multi-language environment in your fic.
First fandom you wrote for?
I was gonna say "Harry Potter", because that's the first fandom I wrote for (and published) after discovering fanfiction (the first fics I read were for Starsky & Hutch), BUT. I guess I should answer Titanic?? On account of how I kinda wrote a self-insert in high school (when the film came out) in which an imaginary inventor uncle build a time machine and my sister and I did some time tourism (obviously money wasn't an issue), thinking "oh we'll just go home on April 14th". I was a soppy 16 years old otherwise 0% interested in romance, so I had my stand-in recently lost her boyfriend (very tragically) and Fabrizio (Jack's Italian friend) be her gently manic pixie dream boy (and, of course, die). In retrospect I might have given my 14 year old sister the best part as the snarky no-nonsense little sibling. I tragically lacked self-awareness and poured my entire heart into it. Thank goodness I had no idea you could put out stories on the internet and that my best friend at the time (the only other human being who read this story) was kind and just as obsessed with the movie as I was ^^'
(I should point out that I wrote it with pencil on loose paper gathered in a binder I lost long ago. Such is life.)
Favorite fic you've ever written?
You can't just - I - oh come on! I can't choose between my babies!! No but seriously, I actually can't choose, sorry :D

Could any of the Dreamworks Animation films that I’ve seen work as a live action film?
In light of the news of How to train your Dragon getting a live action remake, I decided to do this list for fun. Keep in mind that these are the films that I HAVE seen from start to finish, in case your favorite is not on here. (Madagascar and Trolls are such examples of not being on the list).
Prince of Egypt-Absolutely yes. As long as you cast the right ethnicities for the roles (who are also good singers if you want to take the musical approach), and hire a crew that is good at doing their research, then yes this could work.
Road to El Dorado–Also yes for the same reasons as Prince of Egypt.
Spirit–The best thing about this is that you could use real horses and not rely on CGI for this one. Though some people (and we know who they are) would be ticked off because ‘oh the Americans are the bad guys.’
Chicken Run–Nah, I’d leave this alone. It’d be interesting as a stage play, but I don’t think a live action film would work. Plus I feel that would make a lot of the darker elements even worse. Alternatively, you could screw this up by having it be human focused and have OCs be the ones to save the chickens like in Dumbo, and no one wants that.
Shrek (any of the films)–Eh…. If they did 80’s style practical effects and saved the CGI for specific things, it could work. Otherwise half the characters would be in CGI as well as almost the entire scenery if you went with the lazy route, in which case it won’t work. Also, given how things have changed, someone would have Lord Farquaad be played by a regular sized man, which would not be taken well by some fans. If they mess with Fiona’s character, it wouldn’t be well received either.
Puss in Boots–same as Shrek. If they go with the CGI route for the entire cast, it won’t work, unless you go with a theater approach (which would be the better choice).
Kung Fu Panda (any of them)–Absolutely not. They’d go with the CGI route for this one and it’d be crap. Also my understanding is that Chinese audiences love the Kung Fu Panda films and I don’t think you’d want to anger them if you were trying to appeal to them for money like with the live action Mulan. The ONLY way you could do this is to have the actors in costumes (not cheesy costumes, but good costumes that incorporate the animal elements as well as Chinese culture) and take nods to Eastern theater/cinema for this to work. Knowing Hollywood, it’s doubtful the second option would come into play.
Monsters vs Aliens–It’d be neat to see this with cheesy old school effects, but I can’t see this being a live action film given how the original didn’t do well enough with most people.
How to train your Dragon (what started this whole thing)–A puppet version of Toothless would be cool. However we all know the dragons are most likely going to be CGI, so… yeah, this might not be well liked.
Megamind–given how popular Marvel is, they could pull this off (but probably try to have Megmind be in disguise for longer chunks of the film to avoid having the actor be in make up so much). Though expect certain people to throw a fit because the whole thing with Hal being more than just a creep towards Roxane is STILL relevant in this day and age.
Rise of the Guardians–Same with Shrek. In the right hands the costumes and make up would be amazing. But they’d likely go for CGI for Bunnymund and the fairies, as well as most of the scenery, in which case it might not work.
Mr. Peabody and Sherman–Could you learn from the mistakes the first live action Sonic film almost made? It all depends on how Mr. Peabody is done, but either way I don’t think this adaption could work. Then again a lot of those ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle and friends’ cartoons have had several live action films, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this film also got that treatment.
Home–Nah. I know what route they’d take with this film (given that most of the cast are aliens, and they wouldn’t use a live action cat for Pig, not to mention all the alien stuff), so no.
Boss Baby–OH HELL NO! NO! NO! NO! Not only is this a terrible idea, but it’s already been proven that CGI babies are terrible. You know damn well they’ll go with the CGI baby route if they do this. I don’t want to see a CGI baby in live action talk with an adult’s voice. We will have entered an apocalypse if this ever happens.
Captain Underpants–Honestly I’d be curious to see this and I think it could be pulled off. The catch is that there’s some things that’d have to be CGI (unless you keep the books’ more creative approaches to certain scenes and moments), you’d have the same Farquaad issue and have to have a regular sized person play the bad guy, you’d need to find the right crew who wouldn’t treat the story or characters as complete jokes, and you’d need to find a pretty well rounded actor who shares physical similarities to CU/Krupp, has enough energy to play both roles, and is willing to… well, you know… be running around in his underwear for all to see.
The Bad Guys–this would be hard to do if you made the wrong creative choices. You could do the Sonic approach with the main characters, but if you just made them all humans with animal characteristics/are just regular humans with code names then its probably not going to work (I mean, that’s interesting, but not everyone would be all for that). Also, I don’t know if just having the actors in make up and costume would work.
#dreamworks animation#how to train your dragon#some could work but others not so much#these are all DA movies that I've seen so not all of the films are on this list#shrek#puss in boots#megamind#rise of the guardians#kung fu panda#captain underpants#the bad guys#a bunch of other films

Other miscellaneous thoughts (kfp4 spoilers)
- I enjoyed Han. He didn't get much screentime though but I loved his unhinged laughter and the way he rolled about. Wish we got to see some more of him (idk quite how it would be fit in though chchfhvj)
- I was a huge fan of kfp3 breaking the urn of whispering warriors again (hope I got the name of it correct cause I'm just trying to go by memory with that one). And. Hmm. On a pure fan service level I do love that they actually went for it AGAIN. because I'm honestly just personally a sucker for it as a Bit. Just. I'm a liiiittle bit on the fence about it, undecided about whether it's a "joke's overstayed it's welcome"/too repetitive, or whether to love that they leaned into it/brought it back again as a gag. Because on the one hand, over reliance on something like that can be lazy, BUT simultaneously it can take guts to just go for it wherein the amount of repetition becomes part of the humour of it, and you just take the risk of it being seen as lazy for the purposes of the Bit. Personally I never really expected it to get reused again but in theory i love the idea. Like, I'm SURE I've actually made a post in the past about just thinking it would be great to lean into it as a repeating gag - and then they DID bring it back again in this movie! So while I'm somewhat wary, tbh I did enjoy that. Po's whole "oh no! The urn of whispering warriors! Which I've already broken! TWICE!" was hilarious imo. The slight delay and then it actually getting broken. And then a very defeated looking Po SLIDING among the shards while there's the iconic sound effect(s) of those poor lost souls crying out???? Yes please that was so damn funny. I loved that. Like again I had this certain wariness about it but nah, that was fun. I love fun. Ultimately I appreciated that gag fhgdghggk. And the SOUND EFFECT gets me every damn time it's just sooo iconic and priceless
- it's interesting because like. Kfp3 felt somewhat less "legitimate" than the first two movies in terms of like... How "authentic" it felt to the world of Kung Fu panda as established in the first two movies. For example, the first two movies have mystical elements and whatnot, divination visions etc, but it kind of seems to operate at the periphery of an otherwise mostly grounded world, relatively speaking, meanwhile the third movie essentially brings the equivalent of magic front and centre and such and at the time it kind of felt out of place, but like, I was able to accept it, and many years have passed since then, etc. and when I talk about legitimacy I mean how effective suspension of disbelief is + whether the movie feels "canon" etc. movie 3 still felt very canon to me even though in some parts it felt slightly less so. Movie 4 is definitely reeeeeally challenging on that front, much more so than 3, but overall.... I mean it does still mostly feel canon to me which was why I mostly accepted and had fun with the movie. But some parts definitely feel uncanon and break my suspension of disbelief, so like, I'm just gonna be retconning it in my mind for my own sake. I can't accept kai still existing as canon or he and Shen bowing or Tai lung's role in this movie etc. so this movie just kind of dips in and out of canon to me. I pick and choose. I curate my own experience LOL. Also other fans have already covered this extensively and I've voiced my grievances on this before (in private though I'm P sure) but sincerely, the way the Dragon Warrior title is treated in this movie as something that can/should be and needs to be passed on to someone else is REALLY annoying and goes against the first film. So I def have beef with that. And it could have been fixed easily enough I think... If it wasn't the title itself with all its attached connotations/lore but rather just a more generalised choosing of a successor that was needed, or if at least the LORE of the first film when it comes to the title was more properly acknowledged and addressed to explain why it needs to be passed on, idk. So basically I will just be ignoring that in my opinion of canonicity because the plot still works the same without needing to bring the Dragon warrior title specifically into it, you know? There's a bunch of little things I'm just gonna be soft retconning like that tbh.
Anyway part of what made 3 jarring/feel less Legit is it didn't follow the established "tradition" of opening the movie with a more 2d/stylised sequence not taking place in direct reality (e.g. a dream) before transitioning to "irl". And of course this movie also didn't do that at all lol. So it's more easy to write off as not 1:1 to the rules of the world XD
BUT the third movie still had excellent colour theming!!!! And this fourth movie dropped the ball there and just didn't bother with any of that. Which is disappointing but points to the trend of 3 and 4 veering more and more to seemingly "noncanon" territory where it breaks the "rules", etc.
And like, I will put my hand up and say that I was never the most observant fan when it came to this franchise's dedication to colour symbolism - I'm sure I only know about it + know how important it is/has been to these films because of my participation in the fandom. It's not an aspect I'm super invested in beyond the aesthetic/coherence of it. I'm moreso invested on a meta level due to my awareness of it having been a rule of production + other fans calling attention to/caring about it. So while it doesn't make a huge difference to me on a surface level, it really sucks and goes to show that the people working on this one didn't Get these films or have the same level of care that the others had if they couldn't even be bothered to have some colour symbolism consistency like the others did. Just another reason 4 fits in way less with the other 3.
- when Tai Lung goes "well, I saw THAT coming" it was just so bad. Just very "well, that happened" and "he's right behind me isn't he" tier dialogue 😭
AND LIKE. I'm not entirely opposed to him having lines like that - it CAN work, but only if you actually give him other more substantial stuff to do first. The character needs to have serious moments to balance more comedic lines out, to "earn" them. Like I said in a previous post he needed more presence and to actually do something. God it's like. The fourth continued 3's trend of tending to more lighthearted stuff it's like it's AFRAID to be tense and serious ! But you NEED intensity and serious moments. A character like Tai Lung needs serious stuff before you can jump to more lighthearted stuff with him and idk what the movie gave us on that front just wasn't enough for me. Like I don't wanna be too harsh, I guess I like it in theory, it is fun. But it needed to be more earned and better executed than it was

Your opinion on ''Turning Red''? I didn't see you express any thought on the film. I like this is one of the Pixar movies with most female characters, and the puberty and adolescence insecurities were quite bold and relatable to a kid movie.
My Rottentomatoes account has become inaccessible, the site delinked my profile from my e-mail address for no given reason and refuses to fix it, but this movie I barely managed to review before that happened. There's no point in giving the link to an account I can never continue to grow, so here are the many horrible things I said: "Holy hairy panda. I can't stand self-important, twerking preteens -see my Cuties review that has probably been unlisted by Rottentomatoes for the 80th time- and after watching the entirety of the movie, I don't understand why the child characters had to be like this. It added nothing to the story and the movie's intro alone was a chore to get through. Sure, these kind of children are aplenty in today's age, but why make a kid's movie that children will watch and likely mimic. Now we're going to have even more shitty kids, I hate this existence! The uncomfortable puberty bit(s) that transpired before Mei's transformation was unnecessary as well. Her transformation isn't a representation of puberty at all, no matter what some people or the ham-fisted "we all have a monster inside of us"-line at the end of the movie said. She's literally a descendant of a fairy tale character who begged to the gods to become her favourite animal, as to help protect her family. Not sure why a red panda was chosen, and not, for example, a tiger or a dragon. You know, something inherently large and dangerous. Having that said, the panda design was silly-looking. I'm not sure how it helped the lady from the legend protect anything, as apparently these things aren't even that large. Now (spoilers), Mei's mother was awesomely large, and when I saw her red glowing eyes stomping through the city, I got excited to see this disfigured beast from Hell.. until the light hit her face and I saw it was just another dumb-faced panda. With a Karen hairdo this time. Jesus. And really, the main thing that's to blame here is the art style, which is, as pointed out before, very "Steven Universe". It works for Steven Universe, since that's 2D animation, but I personally can't stand seeing 2D art styles and animation movements in 3D movies. It looks off and lazy. Didn't like it in Hotel Transylvania, either. You have computers that are capable of anything, and you end up doing what you could've done with pencil and paper. Which also would've given the movie more charm. Bring back 2D animated features already, we need a new Disney renaissance. Turning Red is a messy story starring a messy character. Mei would've been much more bearable if she started out timid and overly obedient, whereafter she starts deviating because her first beastly transformation awakens emotions you could describe as "puberty". A different animal would've helped, too. You can't insert a disturbing nightmare sequence in your movie and have the conclusion be a marketable Teddy bear. A Teddy bear so marketable, the police won't even show up to look for this potentially dangerous creature roaming about. I'm also a bit tired of these movies starring girl characters who's powers -or the conflict itself- revolve around their emotions. It's always the same story: their surroundings forbid them to express themselves, or else havoc, but then the solution is expressing themselves. Wowie. Mei was already expressing herself, annoyingly so. The overused plot doesn't even suit the character. Now I'm tired of writing, bye bye."

What is an illustration essay plan footnotes?
For this essay, is better if I explain my own experiences of illustration after the books and reflections of my tutors. I had explored in my course that maybe it's too early to begin with my own subjects to make an essay, but I believe it is better to research my own course. It's better to understand, especially if I am interested in Studio Ghibli to know illustration, Mangas and animation differences and qualities of work. I had been began with art and design the books I had being learned illustrations don't counted as art but better to learn fine art and art and design or visual art because is an impacted as an illustrator career to begin but I have to be watch to not to compare with graphic design if I compeer with illustration with graphic design it won't make senses because The graphic being specific as it seems don't using visuals but using similar tools like illustration. For Illustrations Has many alterations the child books and comics or Mangas. I wanted to being try booth of the subject just like Miyazaki did he has shared on his animation and Mangas child based and his countries' histories being opened up He also knows how to make me speechless or stunned with his art work and sound tracks expressions( I will be write about him on my next essay's just I need some connections with the subject I do and I have to know why I chosen this subject.
I always liked Wine the Phoo because this was my childhood but long as I searched up the classic real classic part was ditched the Disney disappointments.
If I could go back to my child hood I would be learn classic British illustrations because
I explored Peter Rabbit, Paddington, Hungry Caterpillar and Wine the Phoo. In my country also has classic illustration I had grown up called pompom tails, folk tails in Hungary, Green Rabbit.
I had being watched Grimm Fairy Japanese versions in my country.
I also fascinated of the little prince.
For Mangas or animation I have a list:
Vampire knight
Mermaid melody
Sailor Moon
Kyou Koi Wa hajimemasithu
Kaito Kamikaze Jeana
Kami sama Hajime Ashita
I would love to say I read Naruto , Death Note, Bleach or my hero academy or demon slayer but does mangas was sold out quickly and online manga I don't find or I find lazy of myself to search.
Animation I watched Cartoon network, marvel, animax, Jetix and the Fox kids.
Bakugan
W.I.T.C.H
Jin Jan Jo
Oban Battle of star
Star wars rebelled
Star wars clown wars
I also inspired by Pixar and Dreamwork
Because pixar and dream works wont necessary using music or twisting out things it was realism based on it could be funny and sad at the same time concepted of life time and tinny cultural history dragged in.
MY favorite Pixar movies:
Up
walle
InsideOut
Toys story
Monster university
Finding nemo/ Finding dory
Red panda
Incredibles
Your friend rat/ratatouille
Bao/short film
Cars 1
This animation from Pixar is the one it had being raised me up just like the Gibling studio and motivated me to learn illustration and novel writing. this animation made me learn how to understand emotions- colours some communications with parents with their Childrens. Puberty maybe obvious but this is the language I prefer to communicating with my novels and illustrations. Reach the Pixar's and dreamwork more read books or wiki pedia just like Miyazaki and Ghibling studios!
Dreamworks
Kung fu panda
Shrek
Puss boots
Mega mind
Shark tales
Madagascar
Madagascar Pingues
Rise of the guards
Trolls
Boss baby
How to train your dragons
Croods
Flushed away
Monster vs aliens
The Flushed away is my first movie and cinema in my life it meant something new perspectives talking animals why? the triangle cone faces and the tooths I cannot stop myself to think how often they chewing something.
Nickelodeon:
SpongeBob square pants
Full house
Danny phantom
Teen mutant turtle
Hej Arnould
Rugrats
Catdog
Powerpuff
Adventure time
Jimmy neutron
Avatar
Fairy odd parents
I really liked how British illustrators used watercolours, dry-point prints, and typography.

The comfort is great
Anime Onesie
The anime onesie fits adults well and is comfortable. It's similar to the siren or union suits that were worn in 1940s. Anime pajamas can be found in a variety of colors and characters like Pikachu and Charizard. Also, they are a great choice for Christmas and Halloween.
A panda-themed onesie anime can be worn at home or out in the public. Available in different colors and sizes ranging from XXLarge to XSmall. It's also easy to clean, and you can lay it flat to dry. Made of soft fleece, it feels like a huge cuddle buddy. Its hood, and tail, add to the cuteness. Many people confuse onesies with Kigurumis, because they look similar. But onesies have more of a generic style. Kigurumis usually are inspired by a character or creature, but can also have a specific theme such as a wavy and rainbow pattern.

This got really long so I’m just gonna
As someone who really likes their artwork I just gotta agree it’s innately uncomfortable. I used to be of the opinion that Thistleclaw was a more complicated character - and I still am, but in a very different light. I think thistle was always morally dark, he was just very good at disguising it with the relationships he fostered, snowfur definitely being one of them - after she dies I think maybe he did grieve, but I also need to remind everyone he openly called both her and his son weak after the fact. I don’t think if he loved anyone that that love was healthy, and he was very quick to turn against others for failing him in his eyes. He also consistently has a history of child abuse as stated - he was very harsh on Tigerpaw which I don’t see a lot of people talk about, not to excuse his actions as an adult, but as a character I think it’s important to note how Tigerstar’s role model largely abused him throughout his apprenticeship and pushed him too hard. I hate Spottedleaf’s heart but I hate it for the horrible portrayal of child abuse more so than the “out of character writing”, I don’t think it should exist because the Erin’s are not good at handling these topics and this book is now the most concrete evidence of that, but now that it does exist, we shouldn’t ignore the larger implications that it’s made.
I also dislike the idea that thistle became worse after his wife died because it’s a really lazy way to make a sympathetic villain and used to completely woobify him. This can be done right (I think kingpin from spiderverse did this very well - you felt bad for his loss, but it did not justify the harm he was willing to do to a literal child and everyone around him) but, in thistleclaws case I see it as just an excuse for him less so as a piece that plays into his villainy. There’s like a lot of villains I can list with tragic backstories who still are consistently proven by the narrative of their story to be wrong or reprehensible, killmonger from black panther, lord shen from the second kung fu panda (extremely well developed for a villain in a kids film that shows up once in the franchise), candyman from the candyman films (the remake more so - the original is very confusing in how he works), general woundwort from watership down, etc., etc. but I only consistently see these aspects of Thistleclaw used to wave away criticisms of his character instead of embrace his villainy or even that yes, realistically he constantly put others in danger and was extremely willing to do so in order to satisfy his own desires. The added vilification of bluestar is what worsens this, Thistleclaw is basically a parallel to her; maybe not as well developed as most novels and media approaching this concept, but it stands. They both desire deputyship, they both are faced with loss, they both lose their kits in one way or another; the difference is that bluestar up until Tigerstars betrayal is shown as someone not only weighed down by the crushing weight of her own past transgressions, but attempting to do right by those mistakes. Her desire for deputyship is to lead her clan to a better future, her overall desire throughout her story is to mend and persevere, even at the sacrifice of her own happiness which she does sacrifice (her kits and maybe her love for oakheart), bluestar gives instead of takes and even when she does the story punishes her. Thistleclaw on the other hand only understands take, he lacks any care for his own life since it’s a RiverClan skirmish that takes it. He’s willing to hurt a kit to feel in control, willing to hurt his own apprentice, maybe even his own son, but completely unwilling to shoulder any blame for his actions. He always lashes out, never looks inward at himself, and any mistakes made on his part aren’t viewed as mistakes by him. He doesn’t regret what he’s done. They’re actually pretty good parallels for eachother in that way, bluestar breaks the code, but it’s not violence or blood lust the fuels her — she falls in love when she’s vulnerable and alone, she bears kits of that love, and even she understands based on the laws that bind her that what she’s done is wrong. Thistleclaw stays within the code (more or less) - but, he still causes damage nonetheless. Just because his actions are within the code does not justify them, they are still negative and fueled by his own selfish desires which he never feels any shame for. Even without Spottedleaf’s heart mentioned these are all things true to how he operates in the books and even when they are sympathetic to him, his actions outweigh that sympathy. His actions are largely why two villains exist in the series (both tigerstar and scourge would’ve likely not have gotten that bad had it not been for his irresponsible negligence, recklessness and violence).
SH while bad, isn’t innately bad because it adds another victim to Thistleclaws list; it’s bad because of the poorly handled topic of child grooming and that should largely be the focus of most people, not a character. This is a series targeted towards young adolescents and children and it’s disgusting that this book exists as is. I couldn’t complete the book myself based on how bad it made me feel as a survivor of online grooming, it’s honestly revolting how the focus of Thistleclaws behavior being wrong is that he is training in the dark forest, the implication that if he wasn’t this would be fine is. It’s ridiculous this book was even published. I’d personally argue they could’ve had the story handle the topic of grooming without the explicit implication of romantic/sexual grooming being at the forefront due to how largely this series isn’t the series that should be handling this (kids stories can handle dark, realistic and often common subject matters to clarify; warrior cats is not the series that should be educating children on topics like drug usage or gun violence or whatever). Thistleclaw could’ve been Spottedleaf’s mentor who similarly wanted to make another tigerclaw out of her through harsh training and violent means, trying to push her into this ideology he’d already pushed tigerclaw into, Spottedleaf’s desire to become a healer could even parallel this as instead of embracing his destructive teachings she becomes a mender. It didn’t have to be that insanely uncomfortable and tasteless (clarification; discomfort in some stories can be good like horror or suspense, SH is uncomfortable not because of the topic alone, but the handling of said topic being so obtuse that you cannot fully believe that someone thought it was ok to publish) it could’ve been a story that used metaphor or something not as complicated to get the idea across instead of butchering the topic at hand and making a mess.
This was. Longer than expected. I need to take a shower thinking about SH for more than two seconds has made my skin crawl.
sad machine has always really rubbed me the wrong way tbh. the way they (apologies in advance if this is the wrong pronoun as i haven’t checked) talk about thistleclaw is just like… are we even thinking about the same character at this point? I get ignoring SLH since it’s poorly written and really uncomfortable but thistleclaw isn’t good or even really morally gray disregarding that. and it’s fine to have problematic faves or whatever, but when your defense of that character is ignoring the repeated child abuse they’ve perpetuated- which is the thing they’re probably known for best in the eyes of the fandom- in order to paint that character as a loving father or whatever, i can’t help but find it really weird. thistleclaw being generally terrible to kids isn’t a thing with just SLH either. it’s a consistent detail (ex. him in rise of scourge) and it just gets uncomfortable when people try to pretend like it’s not or like it’s exclusive to one novella that they don’t take as canon or whatever. I don’t think this is a thing exclusive to sad machine either but they’re like the most popular artist in the fandom I see perpetrating it
#tw csa#tw child grooming#tw child abuse#tw Spottedleaf’s heart#Spottedleaf’s heart#spottedleaf#Thistleclaw#bluestar#warrior cats#wc#also there are better characters who can be loving dads with tragic stories#crookedstar is right there#thrushpelt is right there#there’s probably more but I likely forgot

Turning Red, seeing red
There's a professional film reviewer on twitter getting raked over the coals, and rightly so.
It's one thing to say that a movie clearly isn't targeted at you, but to imply that the target audience is vanishingly small and that it's nearly impossible for anyone outside that teeny tiny niche to derive any kind of meaning from the story is, uh, not the best look. Especially if you're supposed to be a professional reviewer who has spent decades building a whole brand in the business.
All that on its own would be questionable, but then it turns out the things the reviewer "can't connect with" are the fact that the protag is a teen/tween girl, that she isn't white, and that she's experiencing puberty/her period for the first time. Meanwhile he is a middle-aged white man and father of two boys and doesn't think anyone outside [specific city, specific ethnicity, specific gender, specific age] would be able to enjoy the film.
He goes on to complain that a girl turning into a red panda is a direct ripoff of the original Teen Wolf and that there's nothing new or original about this kind of story. Teen Wolf did the "coming of age= animal transformation" story better and Mitchells vs. the Machines did a better job of showing a story about a "female character experiencing a major life change."
Again, comparing one film to another film is pretty common, but implying that the other film is the only one of its kind that's "legitimate" and that the new film which only shares a vague general theme is somehow lazy and unoriginal is a little puzzling. You'd think a professional film critic with decades of experience wouldn't make such amateur mistakes, but it happened.
Of course middle-aged white dudes with professional critic jobs also seem to get derisive whenever anything isn't catered specifically to them and their needs. A lot of them despised Book of Boba Fett, a story of a brown man trying to make a significant change in his life. And a story about a Chinese-Canadian girl experiencing the effects of puberty for the first time is likewise unwelcome, probably because ffffemale puberty involves icky icky bleeding and no one outside of an incredibly tiny niche (aka people who've experienced/will experience periods) could ever possibly want any kind of story about that... stuff.
Look. If I had a choice between having a period, getting breasts, etc. or turning into a red panda, werewolf, or other animal, I would 1000% choose animal transformation.
If you are contractually obligated to review a specific film, is it really that difficult to say "I don't fit the target demographic for this film, but here are the things that are good and here are the ones that, story-wise, didn't hold together." What's the literary value of saying "this film can only have a vanishingly small target audience of which I am not a part, which is a huge failing on its part, and here are all the other things that make it less good than these other movies where I AM the target audience."
I haven't seen Turning Red yet and had dismissed it as Not For Me, but I may have to spite watch it now. If Wiki is correct it premieres on D+ on 11 March. I should remember to see it eventually, despite that being a whole three days in the far-flung future. ;)
