Happy wip wednesday y'all! Tagged by @socially-awkward-skeleton (tysm~💕)
And tagging @adelaidedrubman, @strangefable, @detectivelokis, @poetikat, @purplehairsecretlair, @aceghosts, @sstewyhosseini, @funkypoacher, @confidentandgood, @thomrainer, @deputyash, @roofgeese, @harmonyowl, and anyone else wanting to share what they're working on (but also absolutely zero pressure)!
Here's the intro draft of kneeling at the crossroads (aka syb's canonical timeline fic)!
The Project at Eden’s Gate had been an open secret for years. Everyone in the county knew what was happening behind closed doors: the bribes and out of court settlements over land disputes; the uptick in arrests and near immediate releases for those charged with possession of illegal firearms; the way meth was slowly replaced by some new drug called Bliss. Something strange was happening in the rural region of Hope County, Montana. The only problem is that no one has been able to prove anything.
Until the videos.
The first one that came out, most people thought was a hoax. Some hokey found-footage student film that somehow went viral -- too absurd, too far-fetched to be true. But when the Missing Person’s reports for some kid named Alex came through the Hope County Sheriff’s Department’s fax machine, that’s when it dawned on them that there might be something more sinister to the actions of the local group of religious fanatics.
Deputy Sybille La Roux wasn’t there for that.
What she was there for, though, was the other video.
The one filmed with the shaky camera tucked inside someone’s breast pocket. The one too candid to be staged. It reminds her a little too much of the POW torture and execution videos she’s had the displeasure of viewing during her time in Afghanistan. The screams are too real, and she’s seen enough blood and gore to know the difference between it and practical effects.
The preacher, Joseph Seed, gouged a man’s eyes into oblivion and blinded him on camera.
And while she had her own questions about who salvaged the phone and uploaded the footage, she didn’t voice them. This was the video that finally got the Feds involved and the Sheriff’s Department -- underfunded and understaffed -- the support they desperately needed.
She just thought that with everything they did know, the United States Marshals Service would send more than one man.
Deputy Marshal Cameron Burke is a city boy from Billings who never quite outgrew his cowboy phase. His eyes gleam with ambition, and as she sat in that tiny conference room, she held her tongue at just how stupid his infiltration plan was. She’d tried arguing with him once, only to be immediately shut down for being the rookie. As if her eleven years of experience in the military didn’t mean a goddamn thing.
The man thinks himself the next Wyatt Earp, and it’s clear that he cares more about the press and promotion that apprehending Joseph Seed will get him. He wants out of this backwater state, wants the glitz and glamor of an office in Washington D.C.. The Hope County Sheriff’s Department is just a footnote in the heroic bedtime story he tells himself every night.
She sits across from him in the back of the chopper as Pratt guides them steadily towards Joseph’s compound. He’s going over the plan for what feels like the hundredth time. Not that there’s much to go over. The man is dead-set on strutting in through the front door, and while she understands the need for transparency in a situation like this -- the public tends to frown on the cloak and dagger operations she’s played a part in abroad -- the Marshal’s plan is liable to get someone shot.
It had taken almost all of Earl’s negotiating power to convince him that walking in during broad daylight might not have been a good idea.
So, here they are pushing 3 a.m. and flying over the county. Sybille’s nose is buried in her phone, watching that damn video again. There’s something haunting about it. Something foreboding, and she can’t shake the clenching sensation in her gut that even when they do arrest him, whatever’s happening here will be far from over. No one has seen a man like him since David Koresh.
The way Joseph speaks is almost hypnotic. Were it not for the sheer noise of the engine and blades whirring overhead, his cadence might have lulled her into an entirely different mindset. One less conducive to fulfilling her current objective, and one more…easily persuaded. The way he turns to look at the camera, somehow sensing his victim, sends shivers down her spine. It’s almost as if he sees her too. Like he knows they’re coming for him.
The subsequent violence is as compelling as it is horrific. She can’t look away, and a sick part of her almost misses it.
Her jaw clenches as the screaming starts, and the video mercifully cuts out not long after. She sets her phone down, letting it rest in her lap. Turning to look out the window, she’s met with the giant stone edifice of just the very man from the video. Omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent.
“Why do you keep calling them Peggies?” Burke asks as she tunes back into the conversation. A question that makes it clear he barely skimmed the file she and Pratt had compiled for him. If he even bothered to read it at all.

most security guards/cops/crims are more dangerous to themselves than to any actual threat. in the Early Years of Batman, he was a Cryptid who only appeared at night & had the Power Of Money to support said "Cryptid" status via having MUCH better tech (armour, spyware, [nightvision], training with said tech, non-lethal weapons, niche tools, etc) than everyone else. At night, with a previously scouted out map of an area & a local's familiarity with it, Batman wouldn't need to "ninja" that hard because... unless a guard's boss was SCARIER than a Bat Cryptid, they're not going to be overly invested in risking their lives (though Batman's Technical Pacifism wasn't realised until Later: I assume Gotham's medical insurance runs by North American Rules, making a "non-lethal" beatdown probs scarier to the Average Mook).
The Penguin is a Threat because out of ALL the early crime bosses of the Era where Batman Began... HIS GANG SURVIVED (as in, it didn't get disbanded or turn on itself after losing multiple arms deals/smuggling shipments/sundry criminal activities via way of Bat Cryptid). Somehow, the Penguin keeps landing back on his feet: it Varies from writer to writer but the "Modern" Penguin is one of Gotham's more "civilised" crimebosses. As opposed to the Chaotic Crime pre-Batman or the Chaotic Evil of Certain Supervillains, the Penguin is an "Organized" Crimeboss. He's dangerous because he outsurvived all his contemporaries, he has Connections & Political Influence: treating the Penguin as a threat is Only Polite, in a setting like Gotham.
...except when the Penguin is named less for his Penguin Suit and just Penguins: those penguins BLOW UP & get sent into civilian areas. The umbrella ALSO blows up. It also tends to be a machine gun &/or a Detonation Device. This is the Penguin who Danny Devito played. The Batman of that setting was also one without decades of experience & familiarity with [being a vigilante], less Paranoid and Detective-y. Just Very Camp. And, in a Camp Setting, the Penguin can AND WILL "outcamp" the guy not commiting to being a Spooky Bat Cryptid.
The problem with Batman in his present incarnation is that we need simultaneously to believe that this is a man who can effortlessly ninja his way through dozens of gun-toting mercenaries, and that this is a man to whom Danny DeVito with an umbrella is a credible threat.
#batman meta#the penguin#oswald cobblepot#gotham is camp#gotham is film noir#gotham is urban horror#cryptid batman#eldritch gorham#from what i know of the american states' medical system batman not killing people is scarier#i imagine bruce wayne & wayne industries give subtle subsidies for mooks with concussions#unless a supervillain is active i would assume most batfam patrols involve disarming skittish guards & looming over wouldbe assailants#most people would prefer not to do crime or at least to not get hurt by someone in full tac gear#the batman setting requires a degree of good faith bc each writer & fan interprets its themes differently#generally the batman comics are a means of asking why people do crime & whether law enforcement can ever be effective w/o societal change#the gotham central comics go into the futility of being a “good cop” in a corrupt system#one of nightwing's fights with batman was on his wanting to be a cop & thus carry a gun#bruce wayne has obvs trauma about guns & people having access to them#idk whether the batman comics have ever been able to tackle gun control outside the generic busting of weapons smuggling by gangs#but one of the key aspects of batman's mythology is NO GUNS#which remains very controversial to his primary audience#but makes batman immediately preferable to international fans who've seen marvel heroes toting firearms#peacekeepers should not be armed with deadly weapons#stealthy bat cryptid using kungfu & gratuitously niche tools > guns#duke thomas & the fox family are kind of the only black members of the batfam but it was only a matter of time#idk if duke's comics have genuinely engaged with the BLM & disarm the police discussions but both issues resonate w/ the bat mythos#i may be giving more credit to DC than it deserves esp given how easily frank miller & bat video games have yeeted pacifism away#but i would hope that BLM was inspirational to the batwriters bc it encompasses everything that the batman comics set out to challenge#albeit through the vehicle of a rich white boy w/ a retired james bond expie as his butler & caregiver#only an autistic kid would respond to childhood trauma with “become a bat cryptid” & spend a decade learning how to be just that#some people are born cryptid and others spend decades & their grandparents trustfunds learning to mimic cryptids

The article "Using a Vehicle for Cover in a Gunfight" by Hunt Fish Shoot on The Armory Life discusses the importance and techniques of using a vehicle as cover during a gunfight. It stresses that while concealment merely hides an individual's profile, true cover offers protection from gunfire, and using a vehicle's various parts provides different levels of cover. The article advises getting out of the car quickly in a gunfight, using the engine block, and areas with more material, like the "B" pillars and wheels, as cover. It cautions against relying on doors for protection as they generally only offer concealment. The piece provides practical tips for positioning oneself around a vehicle to maximize protection and reminds the reader to stay mobile during such dangerous situations. The article highlights the cooperation with TrueShot for ammunition used in the tutorial and invites readers to discuss further on The Armory Life Forum.

Ukraine Received 13 Special Armoured Ambulances: What Are These Vehicles? - Technology Org

Ukraine Received 13 Special Armoured Ambulances: What Are These Vehicles? - Technology Org
Medical evacuation vehicles are crucial in an armed conflict. They need to be quick and powerful, very capable off-road, and offer good protection from small arms fire. Obviously, Ukraine needs a lot of these kinds of vehicles and during the second half of this year, the soldiers of Ukraine received 13 field ambulances based on the Canadian armoured vehicle Terradyne Gurkha.

Terradyne Armored Vehicles Gurkha (Terradyne Gurkha for short) is an armoured light 4×4 vehicle, made in Ontario. It is based on a Ford F-550 Super Duty chassis and has its engine and interior. It’s been in production since 2006 and is used in many countries around the world, usually for law enforcement duties.
The Terradyne Gurkha is a real multi-purpose vehicle, which can serve as an armoured platform for valuable deliveries, border protection, crowd control vehicles and perform many other different duties. There are a few Gurkhas in civilian hands too.
Under the bonnet of the Terradyne Gurkha there is a 6.7 litre V8 turbo diesel engine, pushing out 250 kW of power and 750 Nm of torque. Of course, it is taken straight from the Ford lineup, which is good for countries like Ukraine, because it makes procurement of spare parts that much easier. It spins all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Gurkha can reach a maximum speed of around 128 km/h. It is also good off-road thanks to its locking differentials.
The Terradyne Gurkha meets NATO STANAG 4569 Level II protection standards. It means that it offers good protection from small arms fire and has decent protection from landmines. Of course, one could wish for better armour, but the weight for such vehicles is important. The Terradyne Gurkha weighs under 9 tonnes.
Essentially, the Terradyne Gurkha is just a truck, which makes it easy to control and service. Depending on the configuration, the Gurkha can carry up to 12 passengers and 2 crew members. Of course, the ones that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will now operate are set up for medevac missions and will not be directly involved in combat.
It is important to note that 13 of the Terradyne Gurkha for Ukraine were crowdfunded. “Armoured ambulances will be able to operate even more efficiently, evacuating the wounded from the hottest points of the front. In general, the number of such vehicles in the world is very limited, so they had to be custom-made to order,” said the Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Lyashko.
At the back of the Ukrainian Gurkha there is space for a couple of wounded troops. It is not said that other equipment these vehicles carry, but obviously first aid for combat trauma is the core of the duties of this type of machine.

Ford Taurus Police Cruiser Concept
What if... Ford brought the Taurus back into production but for the police forces made a special set of cruisers for them to use. In this version which is for the city it would be configured with a twin turbo V6 paired with an all wheel drive configured automatic transmission with paddle shift manual mode. Later introducing the Pursuit model with a choice of a supercharged V8 motor or an even bold Hybrid V8 motor with all wheel drive to deliver insane power to the wheels with balanced power distribution to each wheel.

beginning in at least 2014 infotainment systems in the company’s vehicles began downloading and storing a copy of all text messages on smartphones when they were connected to the system. An Annapolis, Maryland-based company, Berla Corporation, provides the technology to some car manufacturers but does not offer it to the general public, the lawsuit said. Once messages are downloaded, Berla’s software makes it impossible for vehicle owners to access their communications and call logs but does provide law enforcement with access, the lawsuit said.
Yikes. Your car is probably keeping all your text messages and sending them to its manufacturer if you connect to your infotainment system.
The manufacturer does two things with this data:
shares it with law enforcement
sells it to advertisers for extra revenue
HOW WONDERFUL

One of the greatest joys in life is using your shitty old car to shut down a legitimately nice car. For any law enforcement folks reading this, I would never endorse street racing. Also, I think I heard someone shoplifting in the other room, and you should go check it out. The best kind of street racing is the street racing the other person doesn't know they're having.
Now, I've had nice cars in the past before. Once, I had a Mercury Cougar XR7 with most of its original paint. Come to think of it, I might still have it somewhere in the backyard. Hard to keep them all apart these days. Anyway, when you drive a nice car, you get this sort of ego boost every time you see a lesser vehicle. How dare you peasants not realize how inferior your base Corollae are? Only a connoisseur can truly appreciate the divine features of this fine automobile.
That kind of mentality is simply not healthy. All of us, each and every one of us, are just a few generations away from being shit-throwing apes. The fact that we managed to make a machine that gets us down the highway quickly is a total miracle, and it's not any more of one because we put a pretty logo on it and charged $20,000 extra to put precision-engineered butt manipulators in the seats. It is this problem that the very fast beater is meant to solve.
When you have a shitbox and that shitbox goes faster than a nice car, whether because of superior driving (not me) or a significant amount of horsepower (not me) or a lack of understanding of your imminent mortality (possibly me) it is a great feeling to shut down those rich folks tooling around in their "good cars." It knocks them down a peg, which keeps them from doing things like going into work and causing another housing crisis. In fact, I'm going to go out and gap some Porsches with an old rusty fire extinguisher filled with nitrous oxide right now. You should come too, so I can get a ride home after the cops bust me for shooting my engine block across four lanes of the highway.
