Are the "caves" in Morrowind lava tubes?
"20 year old game with lower poly count etc etc." ya I know! But design wise they look more like lava tubes rather than naturally occurring caverns. There's steam vents all over morrowind and obviously Vvardenfell is home to the volcanic Red Mountain.
The cave walls are so smooth and tubular unlike most IRL caves. Theres also open lava pits in quite a few Morrowind caves as well.
Look at the comparison of geometry between the game and real lava tubes.

If you look from above, you can see thousands of stone structures dotting the landscape of the Arabian peninsula. On the ground, you can find a bounty of stone tools and ancient fireplaces scattered along the edges of ancient lakes, as well as rock art depicting hunting and herding scenes in the surrounding mountains. Despite the visibility of these sites, only in the past decade or so have archaeologists taken a dedicated interest in them. Some of the structures have now been dated at up to 10,000 years old. However, the arid climate, baking days and freezing nights, and intense wind erosion are not kind to some of the other relics archaeologists prize. To date, there has been little found in the way of fossils or the kind of deeply buried, layered deposits that can open a window onto the history of a place. Until recently, no archaeologists had surveyed any of the hundreds of caves and lava tubes recorded across northern Arabia. In 2019, our team began to look in these subterranean locations—and in a new study published April 17 in PLoS ONE, we report on the first documented occupation of a lava tube in the Arabian Peninsula.

Lava River Cave is a volcanic cave located in northern Arizona, formed by the eruption of the nearby Sunset Crater Volcano around 1064 AD. As lava flowed from the volcano, it created a tunnel as the outer layer cooled and solidified while the molten interior continued to flow. The cave extends approximately 0.75 miles and features fascinating geological formations, including stalactites and stalagmites. It was first explored by settlers in the late 19th century and has since become a popular site for visitors interested in geology and caving. The cave is a designated part of the Coconino National Forest, highlighting its natural significance and the unique volcanic history of the region.
I've hiked the length of this one and a few others near Flagstaff.

Canary Islands 2024: Volcanic Island Hopping
For those of us in the northern hemisphere, our winter trip to the Canary Islands offers a rare (and very welcome!) glimpse of the sun and temperatures well into double-figures. And, of course, it offers the chance to view some of the spectacular geology that these islands have to offer. We were delighted to welcome along a group of guests from the UK, the USA and Ireland for our trip in February…

Where to Live on Mars?
In the previous post I discussed how to get to Mars. Now you are there, and the question is, what now? One of the first problems is where to live, so let us look at that. It is desirable to have protection against radiation. People talk about lava tubes, but I wonder how many have actually seen a lava tube? There are some in Auckland, which is built on a volcanic field, but these are awkward to…

Panchita Tunnel, Galápagos, Ecuador: Panchita Tunnel is an intriguing lava tube/cave on Rancho Primicias next to El Chato Tortoise Reserve, in the highlands near Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, in the Galápagos archipelago, Ecuador, South America. As you descend into the tunnels via stairs, you quickly lose sight of the sun and enter the darkness. Even though they have lights hung throughout. you still have limited visibility.

A Southern Washington Lava Tube, July 2023.
This cave is possibly the second-longest lava tube in North America. It's somewhat known by locals, so unfortunately bears the scars of visitation by an unknowing, uncaring public. Lava caves cannot clean themselves out, nor can they regenerate.
It's a more complex lava tube than most - it has at least three branching passages above the main channel. Two are meanders from when the flowing lava river was at a higher level, and another is a channel that branches off downstream. I cannot find a modern survey of it, so the true length of these branches and the cave itself is unknown to me. The entrance of the cave is steep, and the opening is small. The setting allows a moss and fern garden to grow green in the misty daylight until it is choked out by the dark.
This cave surprised me with how tall and narrow it is - ceilings are often in excess of 40 feet (~11 m), carving a winding void into the earth. The floor is very rugged, and made of breakdown (collapse debris) for most of its length. We never reached the end, unprepared for how long it would take to finish the remaining third of the cave. A return is in order after the thaw.
