Steddie week. Day 7: Free space. 2.1k words. Ao3 link.
@steddie-week
I’m late but I really wanted to finish the week. So here it is! The last one!
~
“What’s Eddie short for?” Steve asked Robin. They were on their break, now working at a record store after they got fired from Family Video for missing work too much.
“Why are you asking me?” She shot back. Steve simply shrugged. It honestly just occurred to him that he didn’t actually know if that was Eddie’s name or if it was a nickname.
“I was just thinking about it. You don’t know?”
“I have absolutely no idea.” That was disappointing. Robin seemed to be getting along with Eddie. Maybe they’re not that close. Would Dustin know? “You know, I think I asked him once.”
“Really? And what did he say?” She should’ve mentioned this first!
“I think he just started laughing and then deflected. Never answered me.” She stood up. They had to go back to work already. It was slow today, not much customers around so they kept chatting. “Why did you ask?”
“I don’t know.” Steve really was just curious. “We’ve all been friends for a while and I just realized we don’t actually know if ‘Eddie’ is short for anything.”
“He actually seems like the type of person to just be called ‘Eddie’. Like just ‘Eddie’, full stop.” Even if that’d be funny, it’s probably not it. “Anyway, just ask him.”
“Is that not weird?” He wondered.
“I asked him. He just didn’t tell me. Maybe you’d have more luck.” She smirked and it looked like she knew something he didn’t.
Steve narrowed his eyes. “Maybe I will.”
“You’re the one who wants to know.”
“Do you think he didn’t tell you because the name’s embarrassing or something?”
“He’s done so much embarrassing stuff, his name can’t be that bad.”
—
The next time he saw Eddie was when they were playing DnD, at Steve’s house. For some reason Eddie managed to convince Steve that hosting their nerd game was a good idea. He was sure it was his puppy dog eyes. Steve was not immune to those. Robin took advantage of that, constantly.
Steve almost forgot that he was gonna ask Eddie, it was when everyone left and it was just the two of them that Steve remembered the question he had been meaning to ask.
“Hey, Eddie.” He called out to catch his attention.
“Yeah?” They sat down on the couch after cleaning up.
“Is your name short for anything?”
He did exactly what Robin said he did when she asked him. He just started laughing, out of nowhere. Steve didn’t understand what was so funny.
When Eddie stopped laughing, he let out a sigh. “Anyway, what movies do you have?”
“Wha– you’re changing the subject! Why?” Steve was starting to get suspicious now.
“Why do you ask, Steve?” Eddie looked at him.
“I was just curious.” It’s true, Steve was curious. But now it felt like his name was actually something embarrassing, because why else would he avoid answering it in the first place.
“Sureee.” Eddie did not believe him. “To answer your question. Yes, my name is short for something.” Steve figured.
“What is it?” It couldn’t be bad. Steve only knew a handful of names that could be nicknamed Eddie, and those weren’t that bad.
“Ha! I’m not telling you that.” Eddie joyfully replied.
“What– why not?”
“I have to keep the mystery going.” He explained, tone completely serious.
“You’re not mysterious.” Steve deadpanned.
“Shut up, I so am.” Eddie bit back.
“It takes like, one conversation with you to know that you’re not mysterious.” Steve said. It was true, Eddie might have the intimidating look going on, but it was easy to overlook it as soon as he opened his mouth.
Eddie glares at him. “Are you done?”
“You still haven’t answered!”
“‘Cuz I’m not gonna.” Eddie grinned, he was just enjoying having something that Steve wanted to know. “Maybe you can guess.”
“Ugh” Steve fell further into the couch. “I don’t feel like it.”
“Just because I’m a generous and giving person,” Steve perked, he didn’t know why he wanted to know so badly. Maybe so he could use it whenever he wanted to scold him like one of the kids. “I’ll make you a deal.” Disappointed, Steve sighed.
“What’s the deal?” He asked.
“If you guess it,” Eddie put his hand on his chin. “I’ll give you something, anything you want.”
“What? Like a prize for guessing your name?” Steve scoffed. “What am I? A dog?”
“So you don’t want anything?”
“That’s not what I said.” Steve had a feeling that making a deal with Eddie was like making a wish to a genie. Eh, he would still get something out of it. “Whatever, sure. It’s a deal.” He just had to start guessing, until he got it. Shouldn’t be that hard.
“If you say so.”
“Is it Edward?” He gave his first guess.
“Well, that’d be too obvious.” Steve still waited for an actual response. Eddie rolled his eyes. “No, it’s not. Close, though.”
“Edison?”
“I’m so grateful it isn’t Edison.”
“Edmund?
“Oh god, they keep getting worse.”
“Yes or no?”
“No! Why would you think my name is Edmund? Do I look like an Edmund to you?” Eddie asked, scandalized.
Steve stayed quiet. “You want me to answer that?”
“Actually, let’s just watch a movie. That’s enough guesses for today.” Eddie went to shuffle through their options.
“I just started!” Steve protested. He should’ve known Eddie wasn’t gonna make it easy for him.
“I don’t feel like answering more. Try again later.”
Steve crossed his arms and pouted. When Eddie looked back at him, Steve stuck his tongue out, like a toddler. Eddie chuckled.
–
“Edwin?”
Eddie gave him a thumbs down.
–
“Edgar?”
Eddie spelled “no” with his fries. He proudly showed them to Steve.
Steve ate them.
–
“Edrian!”
“Where’d you even come up with that one?”
“I heard it somewhere.”
“Well, that’s not it.”
–
“Is it, like, just Ed or something?”
“Life would be easier.” Eddie dreamily looked to the sky. “So, no, it’s not.”
–
“I’m like, out of ideas, Robin.” Steve didn’t know whether to give up or look in the library.
“Maybe you need to look for obscure names, like really weird ones.” Robin made some hand gestures that he didn’t really know what they entailed.
—
“Can I get a hint?” Steve gave it his best shot at puppy dog eyes, he had big eyes, right?
Eddie wasn’t looking straight at him, he took one glance for like half a second and then decided to look forward. “I already did.”
“No.” He furrowed his eyebrows. “When?”
“With your first guess. I don’t think you need anything else.”
Steve let out a frustrated groan.
—
At the end, he didn’t guess shit.
Steve was dropping by some cookies he made, they were Eddie’s favorite. Steve wanted to improve some skills in the baking department, it was a win win. He got practice, Eddie got cookies. It didn’t mean anything else.
The government gave the Munsons a house after everything, it was on the outskirts of town. When he pulled up, he noticed that a letter had fallen down from the mailbox. When he picked it up he saw who it was addressed to.
Eduardo Munson.
There was no way.
Steve ran so fast his head almost clashed with the door. He knocked frantically. Eddie opened the door, Steve didn’t even wait to be invited in. He ran to the kitchen to set the cookies on the counter and raced back to where Eddie was.
“Your name is Eduardo?”
Eddie’s eyes widened. “How’d you find that out?”
Steve just handed him the letter he found on the floor. Eddie’s mouth formed an ‘O’, but he didn’t say anything.
“Well?” Steve crossed his arms.
“I guess now you know.” Eddie opened the letter to read it, he made his way to the couch and sat down. Steve followed.
“Is that why you said I was close with the name Edward?” Steve didn’t know anyone named Eduardo. Well, he thought he didn’t.
“Eduardo is basically the same name, but in Spanish.” Eddie, no, Eduardo nodded.
“Why– who decided that was gonna be your name?” Did his parents just like Spanish, or something? Steve thought. He obviously didn’t say it.
“My mom. She was Mexican. This letter is from my grandma.”
“Oh. Is it…” Steve didn’t actually know where he was going with that.
“Most of my mom’s side lives in cali, or Mexico.”
Eddie had the letter opened on his lap, Steve peeked. He didn’t want to pry, it was just a quick glance. Even if he wanted to read anything though, he couldn’t.
“That is, fully in Spanish.” His face was a mix of confusion and shock.
“Uh huh.” Eddie was holding back laughter. “What about it?”
“You speak Spanish?!” At this point, he didn’t even care if he was being loud.
“My grandma calls me regularly, like, once a month. She doesn’t speak an ounce of English.” Eddie’s face was fond. That shouldn’t be as cute as it was.
Steve’s jaw was on the floor. Never once did he expect to learn all of this just because he wanted to know if the name “Eddie” was actually short for another name. Eddie reached out and closed his mouth. Steve took some time to get himself back together. He collected the cookies and brought them back for Eddie.
“So, I didn’t guess.”
“No.”
Steve sighed, forlorn. “So, deal’s off, I guess.”
“Mmhm.” Eddie was concentrating on the letter in front of him. Steve slapped his arm. “What was that for?”
“You can read that later. I brought you cookies.”
Eddie snatched them, he started almost inhaling them. Jesus Christ. “These are great.”
“Thanks.” Steve blushed.
After that they were content to just hang out, doing whatever. Eddie told him more about his mom’s side of the family. There were a lot of family members that Steve couldn’t keep track of. He talked more with his grandma, aunts and uncle. Steve found out that his mom taught him Spanish when he was little. When she died, and his dad ended up in prison, his closer relative was Wayne so he moved in with him. His mom’s family always kept in touch, though. The last time his grandma visited was before Christmas in 1985.
“Say something in Spanish.” Steve was surprised with himself for asking that. Where did that come from?
“What am I? Your personal clown?”
“Shut up.” He rolled his eyes. “It just hasn’t registered in my brain fully, that you speak Spanish. Maybe I have to hear it.” Steve tried. It was a cheap attempt at just wanting to hear it.
“What do you want me to say?” Eddie replied. Was he actually gonna do it?
“I don’t know.” Steve shrugged. An idea came to him, he straightened up. “What about the way your grandma greets you on the phone, or the way you answer?”
Eddie scrunched up his nose. Cute. “Ugh… she’s so mushy.”
“Now I have to hear it.” Steve clasped his hands together, battling his eyelashes.
Eddie just accepted defeat. “Fine!” He was now avoiding Steve’s eyes. “Whenever she calls she always starts with something like ‘¿Cómo está mi niño hermoso?’ Or she’d call me ‘mi vida’, or ‘mi cielo’. Honestly she calls me a lot of things.” Steve had no idea what that was, nor what it meant. But his eyes never left Eddie’s lips, not once. Hearing that was doing things to Steve. He suddenly felt hot.
“What does it mean?”
Eddie flushed red. He turned to Steve, eyes deadly serious. “You don’t wanna know.”
“Oh, but I really do.” Eddie shook his head no. “You have to tell me or else I’m just gonna start calling you that.” Eddie’s face was so funny, he looked scandalized at the possibility. “What was it again? Cie- cielo?”
Eddie swung his hands and arms around. “Stop! Don’t you dare continue.” Steve mimed zipping his mouth. “If you must know. She just asks how I am and she calls me her boy and other pet names.”
Steve narrowed his eyes, assessing him. “Is that the truth?” Eddie nodded. “I’ll accept that, for now.”
They spent the rest of the day watching tv. By the time Steve was leaving the sun was already setting. Eddie walked him to the door.
“What would you have asked for?” Eddie blurted. “If you had guessed my name.”
Steve glanced down at Eddie’s lips for the second time that day. He looked up at Eddie, even if they were almost the same height. Steve shrugged one shoulder. “I’m sure I would’ve come up with something.”
Steve leaned in and placed a quick kiss on Eddie’s cheek.
“See you, Eduardo.”
He stepped outside and walked to his car. He heard a loud thumping noise coming from inside the house and chuckled to himself.
–
Bonus:
Steve: he speaks Spanish, Robin!
Robin: I heard you the first time, dingus.
Steve: I don’t think you understand the severity of the situation.
Robin: *blank stare*
Steve: I can’t believe I have to date him.
Robin: you don’t have to.
Steve: no, no. I’m gonna.

Boy For All Seasons
Part 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Ao3
The following day found Eddie at the cemetery, a small backpack of supplies. He'd almost made it to his destination when he was stopped in his tracks.
"Eddie?"
"Stevie? Hi, what're you doing here?"
"Oh, um, I visit Barb's grave sometimes, Nancy doesn't get to go as often as she'd like so I make sure her flowers always look nice."
Eddie knew Barb had disappeared from Steve's house a few years ago, but he didn't know how much it affected him.
"That's really kind of you, Steve, I'm sure she appreciates it."
Steve gave him a sad smile, "Yeah, why are you here?"
"Visiting my mom, gotta clean up her grave before tomorrow."
"What happens tomorrow?"
"Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, mom was from Mexico and she has no family here so Wayne helped me do her old traditions, it's nice, helps me feel like she's still here."
"Need any help?"
"I'd like that."
Eddie lead Steve to his mom's grave and knelt down.
"Hi mom, brought all the good cleaning supplies just for you, and some sharp scissors cause I gotta say you're looking a bit unruly. Oh, this is Steve, you'd like him, he likes basketball just like you."
Steve smiled, "Nice to meet you, ma'am."
"See such cute southern manners, makes all the mothers of Hawkins smile."
The boys meticulously cleaned up the plot as the sun began to set, when they were finished they placed flowers around the edge, it looked perfect.
"What do you do tomorrow?"
"Wayne and I will bring all her favourite foods and candles and decorations and just sit with her and talk, we share stories about her life, keep her memory alive so she never really dies."
"That's beautiful, Eds."
"If...if you want you could join us."
Steve smiled softly again, "I'd love to Eddie."
The following night Steve met Eddie's uncle, who gave him a wary eye until Eddie assured him Steve was good company, Steve saying his dad was an asshole helped too. As they lit the candles Eddie couldn't help thinking how beautiful Steve looked washed in the candlelight.
They shared stories of his mom and told her about their year, as they left Eddie was sure he felt something in the breeze that felt like approval, he looked towards Steve and smiled, he hoped his mom was right.

@imthursdaysyme you got me pregnant to the most beautiful idea and now I’m giving birth to it (that’s a weird analogy sorry) AND this is also to my Chilean friend @timefospookies BITCH I KNOW YOU AINT THAT LATINA BUT YOURE GETTING THERE
CHILEAN EDDIE
- he never really knew his father but he knew that he was a piece of shot that no one likes at all
- cut to years later when he is like hella famous and whatever, he does one of those like ethnicity tests and realizes he is 1/4 Chilean. And he’s like… “tf is Chile?”
- he gets home to lock himself in a his room to study about the weird skinny country on the south of america.
-Steve is kinda worried cuz he haven’t come out of the room for like hours ands it’s kinda suspicious
- out of no where Eddie decides that corroded coffin is making a South America tour, as an excuse to visit his some what home country.
- after going country through country they arrive to Chile, he has learned enough Spanish to get by, but little did he know that out of all of the latinoamericanos Chileans are one of the hardest to understand.
-he goes to museum and parks. He eat whatever he found on the street and learned about the basics of the culture
- the night of the concert arrives and he reveals on stage for the first time the reason behind touring
-“so I know it’s weird af to be here because this is actually…. Where I’m from?? A few moths ago I did an ethnicity test and turns out I’m from Chile? I mean it makes sence, I do have awfully dark humor and i am skinny and tall too”
- the crowd goes wild, everyone is shitting themselves rn. Lfter the concert terrier went crazy over the fact that one of greatest metal singer is Chilean.
-after that, his Instagram post got filled with Chilean shit and comments like “WACHITO RICO VEN PA CHILEEE” or “que chileno es este weon?? Si ni siquiera se puede tomar una piscola”
- at first he was scared, because he found out that Chileans can be quite…. Aggressive (I mean the entire country was banned from posting comments on Donald Trump’s Instagram for something)
- he then went to Viña Del Mar to make a comeback and learn some shit. He was now quite fluent in Spanish but you could still tell that he was American by the accent.
-he loved each and every comedian because they all poked at him for being “Chilean” and at the same time calling palta “avocado” or saying “hot dog” instead of “completo”
- after that he just more and more got to learn about the bizarre history behind Chile with Steve. And they loved it so much, since them, they bought a house and spend their vacations on Valdivia looking at the sea lions and Badurrias in the garden
- ALSO he was totally in love with Teletón, since it’s like a thing he never thought South America had, so every year he went to help disabled kids and adults and donating money.
- he comes back as much as posible, and trying to get to see everything from the flowered desert in the north to the glaciers in the south.
- he knew the people where cold but he actually found them quite nice since they all had that same weird sence of humor he did. They also had the same taste as he did, I mean he truly felt at home when he ate a Barros luco for the first time like that shit hit home.

Mexican-American!Eddie Munson
Okay so I'm becoming less in denial about being in the Steddie fandom. (I don't think I have to cop to being in the ST fandom given that I haven't watched the show since whatever year it was that s2 came out.)
Anyway I wanted to ask why Latino!Eddie Munson hasn't gained more traction? Or have I just not been able to find the content? I found several posts from people expressing excitement at the idea, but then never mentioning it again.
Is it because people think they're not allowed to use that hc bc it'd be racist because he's poor and/or because he deals? I guess I can't exactly say from every possible perspective, but from mine (Mexican-American but grew up thoroughly middle class) it seems fine? Like, it seems like you could easily weave all those elements into his story in a way that's respectful.
Anyway, in the spirit of furthering that agenda, here's some Mexican-American!Eddie hcs that I've been rolling around in my hands like marbles:
I figure he is probably, like, second generation or so? And his dad is regular not-latino white. (Hence the last name.) I'm going with what is either canon or the most widely accepted hc, that his mother died when he was elementary school-aged. I think he knew his Mexican extended family, but only barely; like, saw them every four years or so, kind of deal. Within that family, there's a large variation of levels of assimilation, Spanish language fluency, political views, etc. They are, just about, all poor/working class, though. (It's not stereotypical to acknowledge the systemic structures put in place to keep our people disenfranchised 🙂) and maybe they all live really far from Indiana? I guess I'm putting them in Texas bc that's where I am. They are all excited to see Eddie whenever the occasion rises, and they love him, for as much as that is worth, given they have really no way of knowing him at all. (This leaves open the potential for cousin ocs, if desired.)
(alternately, his mother could have completely split from her family before or soon after his birth, and his ties to that side of his family are completely severed. If we wanna be lonely and angsty about it. Maybe she did it for a good reason, though?)
(also his dad doesn't HAVE to be white, of course. There are infinite ways to be Mexican-American, and one of those ways is an asshole with a white-sounding last name.)
I don't think Eddie speaks Spanish. Even if he knows it. I think he probably understands it at a basic level, and he probably has several handfuls of slang/cuss/diminutive-type words in his vocab. (idk quite how to explain this rn bc I'm tired, but in my tex-mex community, there are certain words that even exclusive English speakers will often sub out, like the words for underwear, hair ties, boogers.) Though I think even Spanish words that are very natural to him, he'd probably keep close to his chest, because:
Being Mexican is a big part of what makes him a Freak. White people LOVE to act like there's just ~something~ weird or off-putting about us while pretending like they don't notice we're a different race than them. If we're pale, they can even pretend they have plausible deniability. Even if Eddie is white-passing, (which he doesn't have to be; it's my hc and I can picture him how I want) the Hawkinsites are obviously gonna know, and be racist dicks about it. It's true that Eddie tends to own his differences and shove them in people's faces, but I don't think he'd do that with Spanish, because it's such a loaded topic for us, and he's been cut off from it. You're either getting shamed by your relatives for not being able to keep up, or by the rest of the world for having an accent or being worse at English. Especially in the 80's, bilingual people speaking Spanish around English speakers (including their own relatives) just wasn't done. Given that Eddie's not fluent and doesn't have anyone to practice with, I don't think the linguistic difference is one that he'd build his identity around. He'd feel the loss of not having community to share that with. I think he wouldn't have confidence in what Spanish he does have, and would avoid speaking it in front of others whenever possible.
I was gonna talk about how he probably has a connection to his culture through food, at least a couple favorite childhood dishes, but I honestly don't think he'd be able to get the necessary ingredients in rural Indiana in the eighties, and, like, I can't see him making tortillas by hand on his own in the trailer, so. Maybe scratch that lol. (I think my mom actually WAS in rural Indiana briefly in the eighties, I should ask her about that.)
I do think he got exposed to your usual roaring heterosexual Mexican machismo growing up, and he is consciously rebelling against that. If we're making his dad Mexican, that'd definitely be a source of friction between them.
Also, in my, admittedly biased and limited, experience, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans are pretty into metal. It'd be cool if his connections to the metal scene outside of Hawkins extended to metalheads of color.
Okay, this one might be stereotypical. But he's loud, chaotic, goofy, and celebratory!! which is what we're like lol. 🇲🇽 Also musically inclined!!
He learned to play guitar from his family pretty young. Maybe not proficiently, but was encouraged to jam along with everyone else at parties. I do think he'd love pulling out mariachi tunes to annoy those he's closest to. Gritos are quicker and more general use than a whole song, but no less effective. (annoying) Like, I think he'd enjoy throwing in some "ay"s, tongue clicks, and rolled rs to embellish his already superfluous way of speaking. And when Gareth groans and tells him to cut it out, Eddie smugly asks him if he's gasp! Insulting his heritage? Gareth tries to tell him, "no, you're just fucking loud", but Eddie just tells him that's also part of his heritage. I think Eddie would be very willing to sing in Spanish to be funny or obnoxious, but rarely does it in other contexts. (I think he probably knows a lot of songs no one else ever hears, though.)
Actually, what if he could also play trumpet, (mariachi style) and would pull that out occasionally just to enjoy the sheer volume of it? Like, he doesn't even own one, he can just play a couple bars if one happens to be nearby. Logically I realize this doesn't make any sense, he'd have no way to maintain an embouchure, but imagine the comedic potential!?!???! Imagine the horror dawning on the faces of Steve and the Corroded Coffin boys when Robin smugly slides her horn over to Eddie, and they realize they're not backing down from the bit. Maybe once he and Robin start getting close, he can start practicing with her in secret? That could be fun. I know this boy's gotta have mad lung capacity. Aww, imagine him teaching Robin to play mariachi-style??!? 🥺
I like imagining his name is Eduardo, just cause I love Hispanic names in any context, and I like the idea of all his white friends getting confused by someone calling him Wardo or Lalo! But he could definitely still be Edward, or whatever Ed- variation y'all prefer. As I said before, there's an infinite number of ways to be Mexican-American! It's super common to give your kids anglicized names in an effort to assimilate. He might also choose to use Edward, even if it's not "actually" his name, for reason of navigating racism. Also, Spanish speakers may give him those nicknames even if his name doesn't quite correspond correctly. Really, everything is on the table here.
Okay, my stance on him speaking Spanish might be evolving, because I think it'd be funny if he cusses people or situations out under his breath when he's frustrated. Not to them; if he's talking shit to someone, he fully intends for them to understand it. But, like, when all his audio cables get tangled together, or when he gets told he has to go fight demons in a hell dimension, or when the cute rich white boy does something completely enticing without even realizing it. For example. 😶 But he still won't speak to people.
I don't think Wayne is Latino, just because he and Eddie already have this dynamic of coexisting on completely different wavelengths, and I think this would add to that.
Spanish lessons with Robin? There might be a non white-savior-y way to do that... Like, he teaches her more colloquial vocab and syntax, and she teaches him more formal stuff?
As he becomes more comfortable with Steve and the party, he does eventually start using Spanish around them more casually; mostly endearments and jokes. Calling Dustin, "pobrecito" when he's complaining, or "mijo" in a loving but condescending tone. (Not to be stereotypical but I LIVE for Mexican endearments; English speakers have nothing on us. And we already know Eddie is a verbally affectionate guy!)
ARGYLE. I saw a post hcing Argyle speaks fluent Spanish, which I can definitely get behind. I don't think he'd push Eddie to speak with him, but I think he'd notice when he understands things he mutters to himself, because Eddie's eyes will quickly flick over to him. So then Argyle will mutter knowing Eddie might understand him, and let Eddie respond however he chooses. That escalates to jokes just for Eddie, or digs at Eddie that the others won't risk overhearing. At first Eddie responds with huffs, chuckles, or eye rolls, but as he gets more comfortable it becomes common for him to snark back in English. Eventually, however, the teasing escalates enough that Eddie bursts out, "Oye! ¿de verdad, guey? Porque recuerdo specificamente una vez cuando tu--" Argyle just breaks down into hysterical giggles, and he never points out when Eddie has to switch back to English to continue their teasing. Sometimes he calls Eddie primo or hermano.
Eddie is delighted to be able to complain about white people and the Midwest to Argyle. Argyle is genuinely baffled as to how he's surviving. Eddie laughs and says, "only barely." Argyle's no instrumentalist, but he's thrilled to sing Mexican folk songs with Eddie, and refresh his memory of lyrics he's forgotten or gotten mixed up. (Alternately: Argyle kicks ass on the accordion, and has had one in his van this whole time.) Argyle starts bringing up whatever food that can make the drive whenever he visits, along with the good California weed.
(if anyone WANTS to talk about racial stereotypes, we can get into how Argyle is giving "token brown comedic relief character with no emotional depth whatsoever, but don't we get credit for not killing him off?!?! 😀" but...I don't wanna get angry about all that, so I usually just try not think about it, and just look at Argyle and say, "what a nice young man! 😊")
(*deep breaths* 😤 this is why we stopped watching the show...)
I do absolutely believe Nancy is the kind of white girl who would put her foot in her mouth and stumble all over her words if she tries to address matters of race/ethnicity. ("Oh, but don't you... Because, you're.... um.") But only, like, once, maybe twice. She catches on fast. Steve generally manages not to embarrass himself just by virtue of the kind of directness borne of not knowing you're supposed to be being delicate. Robin's normal and relatively cultured so she's not a problem. Jonathan knows better from hanging with Argyle, who was probably the only vato patient enough to put up with his white ass in CA.
Huge thanks if you read this, and sorry it's so rambling and inconsistent! 😅 I'd love to know what you think, if this prompted any hc's or ideas, or if I've managed to accidentally say something embarrassing lol. Sorry there wasn't really any Steddie in this; I'm not used to writing romance! And it feels like it'd be super easy to slip into Latin Lover bullshit in that context. Is that why I haven't seen more people embrace this concept? I guess that would make sense... 🤷🏻♀️

Steve Harrington except his mom comes from old money, his father new. So while Steve's mom took his father's last name (reluctantly. She was doing her best to promise that her son would have a good life ahead of him), she got to choose Steve's first, which just happens not to be Steve.
His name is actually Esteban Eberardo Ortiz Harrington, because by God, Maria Harrington would never let her son have an English name since she had to give up her own to promise her son a decent life.
Somewhere along the way she got lost in it all. She chased Mr. Harrington around to make sure he wasn't sleeping with whatever floozie secretary he had at the moment, and in doing so she forgot to be a mother - as much as somebody can just forget that duty.
So, one day Esteban got dropped off at his grandpa's house and became Steve. Then one day Steve's grandfather died and Steve didn't even see his father at the funeral. His father, the dead man's son, sent Maria with flowers to the funeral. Flowers she didn't have a destination for. So, the moment it was over she dragged Steve and the flowers back to the dust-covered Harrington home. She makes some dinner and has a nice night with her son, but as they curl up on the couch and try to settle for the night, she brings him up.
"Mijo, your father. I have to go back to him tomorrow. I have a plane ride in the morning. I have to go sweetheart." She blinks back the tears in her eyes as she delivers the news.
"It's ok mama! I'm 10 now, double digits." He holds out both of his hands, all of his fingers splayed out. "I can take care of things here." He put on his best brave face, something Grandpa Harrington taught him.
"Grandma is going to visit you as much as she can, but she doesn't live near here. You'll be on your own a lot, my sweet sweet boy." She let the tears run at this point, ignoring the musical she had put on the TV to occupy their thoughts.
"Don't cry mama," He curled up into her side. "Wait, Grandma? But she's been gone for longer than Grandpa?"
"No, no, my mama. She'll be up here every so often for you. My brave boy." She kissed the top of Steve's head, peppered a few more against Steve's complaints of tickling.
"Come on mama, Dolly's singing!" He said, and drew his attention back to the TV like it was nothing. They fell asleep on the couch that night. Mr. Harrington never would have approved, but maybe he just didn't need to know.
And that began the life of Steve being alone. At least, most of the time. His grandma did come up every so often. She taught him how to cook, clean, where the stools were, and which ones were tall enough for him to reach the cookie jar. The same cookie jar that stayed in place just incase his parents did come home and happen to give half a shit about it.
When she couldn't be there, over the phone, she taught her little Esteban Spanish. His father never allowed it in the house, but the moment she insisted she be called Abuelita and not Grandma, she piqued Esteban's interest.
He was interested until he got made fun of for the accent. He continued to learn it, but insisted that he be called Steve, the same way she insisted he call her something else. That set the record straight for him.
During high school, she got too frail for him to visit. The Harrington's put money in the bank for Steve, so he began to visit her. He'd fly down to where she was staying, drive once he could. Steve got his license the very first day he could, just to visit her. He planned her funeral when the day came, just a month before Will Byers went missing. That kept him in contact with quite a few of his cousins that way, checked in on everyone and made the rounds while he tried to remain a normal teenager, have a normal girlfriend, live as King Steve, or Steve "The Hair" Harrington. Anything that kept his life nice and neatly in place.
Then, a stupid nail bat was his lifeline. Screw normal, he couldn't trust anyone or anything anymore. Two years later, he got tortured by Russians and then, maybe he could trust someone.
Somewhere between his fall from grace and saving the world for good, he grew to trust a lot of people. Grew to have people at his house all the time, filling that god awful empty house.
He had Eddie over one night when he got a call from his cousin Mariana, she had just finished her freshman year of college in the US, so her English was getting pretty good, but she greeted him in Spanish so he can only return the favor. Steve guessed it was only a matter of time until Eddie and the others found out about him anyways.
So, he responded to Mariana. He had an entire conversation with her, back to the couch that Eddie was sat on. Last he knew Eddie was flipping through movies, but all the noises stopped. At least Steve could assume that maybe he just picked a movie, and maybe get hurt or yelled at or something after the call. He just had to get through this conversation with Mariana.
He heard the crash of tapes falling and had to end it.
"Sorry Mari, I've got to go." He said abruptly in English, and tried his hardest not to slam the phone back into the receiver.
When he turned around, he didn't expect what he saw. Sure, Eddie's jaw was basically on the floor, but he didn't seem angry, not like Steve had expected.
"You- you speak Spanish, Stevie?" Eddie had almost a shocked rasp to his voice, clutching onto the tape in his hand, the one that managed to not fall.
"Yeah, have for about 8 or 9 years now."
"You, Steve Harrington, are fluent in Spanish?"
"Esteban Eberardo Ortiz Harrington, actually. And yeah, my mom is Mexican."
"Est- Esteban???" Eddie laughed out. "Good God Stevie-"
"I know, I know, I should have told you sooner. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hide it, I just- it's hard walking around Hawkins with a Spanish accent, it's just so-" He interrupted Eddie.
"Steve, Stevie, no." It was Eddie's turn to interrupt. "I'm not mad at you sweetheart. Definitely not mad." Eddie hinted at something else.
"You're not mad? What- I-" Steve raised his eyebrow. "What's that look about then?"
Eddie had been out to Steve for a while, and vice-versa. They hadn't exactly not been flirting, so Eddie didn't feel too crazy saying this next part.
"If I'm being so honest, Stevie," Eddie stepped closer into Steve's personal space, "I wouldn't say completely platonic feelings."
"Oh, that's what does it for you, Munson? Really?" Steve teased. Back with the bravado charm.
"I dunno... want to say some more?"
And, of course, the moment he hears it again -the accent Steve's voice works itself into- he's basically frothing at the mouth. He drops the tape he was holding and swings his arms around Steve's neck, only a little awkward considering the lack of height difference.
"I guess it is, Esteban."
"You don't even know what I said!" Steve pretended to act shocked, or pissed or something, but he really didn't care.
"Tell me later," Eddie cut Steve off with a swift kiss, and maybe Steve would settle for later.
Maybe he'd have a lifetime to tell Eddie that all he said was "I really want to kiss you." He had his wish fulfilled anyway.

Bizcocho
One more for this month because this was half written like... all month...
written for @steddiemicrofic prompt: Cake wc: 311 | rated: G | cw: none | tags: Latino/bilingual Steve Harrington, OC daughter, Steve Harrington has bad parents, Married Domestic | AO3 Link
Summary: Steve teaches his daughter 'Las calaveras salen de su tumba' to help her learn Spanish
“Las calaveras comen bizcocho!”
Quinn sang slash shrieked the lyrics as she ran laps around Steve.
“It's her favorite verse.”
Eddie nodded, commiserating with his husband. Steve had taught Quinn the children’s song, Las calaveras salen de su tumba, a week ago. It had tickled Eddie at first, their little girl, singing about skulls... but now it was nonstop.
…
Eddie knew how badly Steve wanted Quinn to be bilingual. His family cut ties after Steve came out as bisexual, but he still had his language and some cultural traditions. It made him feel connected to a larger identity, one that couldn't abandon him.
He'd told Eddie how his Abuela taught him about his heritage when he was small. His maternal grandmother didn't even speak English, yet his own parents avoided Spanish at all costs. They prided themselves on how well they passed as white Americans and sneered at any sign of the language their own parents spoke. It made more sense for his father, Steve had told Eddie. His paternal grandfather had been a poor immigrant, wanting to reinvent himself. He changed their surname; Ricardo Hernández became Richard Harrington. He'd picked an anglicized last name, with the same last initial, at random. Even after his Abuela moved in with them to help care for Steve as a baby, he couldn’t remember hearing his mother ever speak Spanish.
Steve's memories of his Abuela remained a comforting time capsule, sealed by her own passing. They would never know if she would have accepted him when he came out, loved Eddie like family, or celebrated Quinn's birth with them.
…
Eddie picked Quinn up and bounced around with her as she sang the same snippet of lyrics again. He wanted to support any attempt at keeping Spanish in his husband and daughter’s life.
“Mine too 'mi amor.'” Eddie winked as Steve’s eyes rolled.
Full lyric referenced and translation note after the cut
The full lyric referenced and the translation from 'Las calaveras salen de su tumba,' 'The Skulls Come Out of their Grave.'
“Cuando el reloj marca las ocho
Las calaveras comen bizcocho
"When the clock strikes eight
The skulls eat cake"
(Also know as the Chumbala cachumbala song)

Just like a small question based on that one ask, but... might the lack of brown/black men in popular M/M ships have to do with people trying really hard not to be racist so they just... never feature black/brown men? Because I know several F/F ships with brown/black women, but I can't remember a single M/M or even M/F with a black/brown male love interest... well, maybe Link/Gan or Zelda/Gan? But besides that one... nothing rings a notable bell.
--
There are more than that, anon, even if there aren't a lot.
If we're talking about AO3, Link/Gan has 785 works. Finnpoe has 8,636. Sam/Bucky has 10,591. Do you just not watch live action media?
--
Part of it is "I don't know. I just don't find them hot for some reason..."-style racism. That can shift with time and exposure but there's no instant fix even if someone is interested in changing their own tastes.
Part of it is being instantly screamed at and held to higher standards. (And yes, no matter how much people want to whine and say this isn't true, it is true, and anyone who goes ahead and writes despite the haters will tell you so.)
Part of it is fear of messing up above and beyond fear of reactions. Personally, I think this is toxic white guilt-flavor time-wasting and it's better to try and fail than not try, but it's a massive factor in what some people choose to write.
A lot of it is simply the composition of the mega-franchises that tend to generate the ships with bajillions of works. If we're looking at AO3 circles, the biggest f/f ships are not that big. If you look at m/m ships of the same size, there are some with some guy who is not white and not a pale-skinned Asian.
Here's the AO3 f/f tag where you can directly see what's big in the sidebar.
Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor (20389)
Evil Queen | Regina Mills/Emma Swan (15516)
Original Female Character(s)/Original Female Character(s) (14062)
Clarke Griffin/Lexa (12661)
Minor or Background Relationship(s) (11492)
Adora/Catra (She-Ra) (10855)
Amity Blight/Luz Noceda (9751)
Sirius Black/Remus Lupin (7913)
Blake Belladonna/Yang Xiao Long (7205)
Korra/Asami Sato (6866)
If we exclude nonspecific tags and misplaced dudes, we add:
Alex Danvers/Maggie Sawyer (6127)
Robin Buckley/Nancy Wheeler (6120)
Waverly Earp/Nicole Haught (5738)
Luz Noceda and Korra have darker skin. Lana Parrilla is Latina, but is Regina Mills? This isn't exactly some paradise for the diversity you're talking about.
Here's the M/M tag:
Castiel/Dean Winchester (107699)
Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski (68231)
Sherlock Holmes/John Watson (65757)
Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter (64761)

Steve Rogers/Tony Stark (43665)
Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson (41631)

Let's exclude some things and see what we get as we head towards the 5-20k range.
Bakugou Katsuki/Midoriya Izuku (38445)
Jeon Jungkook/Kim Taehyung | V (36025)
Lán Zhàn | Lán Wàngjī/Wèi Yīng | Wèi Wúxiàn (35907)

Jeon Jungkook/Park Jimin (28191)
Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter (27775)
Bakugou Katsuki/Kirishima Eijirou (27193)
Well, we've got Lance. (*shudder*) He's one of the most distasteful and useless stock character types in episode one and is the reason I never bothered to touch Voltron again, but his fans are certainly loud enough about him being Latino.
Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov (26087)
Dazai Osamu/Nakahara Chuuya (Bungou Stray Dogs) (26058)
Clay | Dream/GeorgeNotFound (Video Blogging RPF) (21900)

Peter Parker/Tony Stark (8607)
Bakugou Katsuki/Todoroki Shouto (8588)
James "Bucky" Barnes/Sam Wilson (8522)
Only here are we finally getting down to the range where a lot of the big f/f ships on AO3 hang out, and here's Sam/Bucky, which is frankly not a small pairing at all unless you only mean in comparison to Stucky.
I'll stop there for m/m since these numbers are getting pretty distorted by me filtering out everything higher up, but you get the idea. Even that wretched Old Guard fandom couldn't completely kill off its ship, though then we get into how you're defining your terms and how much actual skin tone matters.
Here's f/m on AO3:
Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir/Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug (32122)
Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy (26417)
Original Female Character(s)/Original Male Character(s) (23498)
Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren (23403)
Minor or Background Relationship(s) (18497)
James Potter/Lily Evans Potter (18142)
Kylo Ren/Rey (15915)
James "Bucky" Barnes/Reader (15200)
Pepper Potts/Tony Stark (14547)
Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley (13843)
Bellamy Blake/Clarke Griffin (13551)
Fox Mulder/Dana Scully (13145)
Oliver Queen/Felicity Smoak (11318)
Captain Hook | Killian Jones/Emma Swan (11031)
Castiel/Dean Winchester (10851)
Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth (9236)
Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski (9152)
Annabeth Chase/Percy Jackson (9141)
Other Relationship Tags to Be Added (9108)
Sherlock Holmes/Molly Hooper (9046)
Bellamy Blake's actor is Filipino, isn't he? I remember race wank.
I don't see anything particularly significant until we get further down the listings, but there are definitely smaller fandoms like Leverage where everybody loves and ships the black guy.
I mean, yes, clearly, media does have a bias against darker skin, and the darker the skin, the bigger the bias. This bias may be exacerbated by fandom, but in a lot of cases, it just seems to be replicated at about the same level.
That pattern notwithstanding, it seems like you just haven't heard of a lot of ships.

are you cuban? or not white in anyway? otherwise its really really weird for you to racebend white characters lol. it comes across performative (and a but fetish-y). why not draw the canon characters of colour? (also making the canonical drug dealer character latino is a bad look)
So, there are many things I want to say about this. I want to give an answer that isn't my instinctive response of "fuck you and i hope you shit your pants in your sleep", so I will attempt to address these questions and concerns.
I do find it funny that you sent another anonymous ask pretty much saying the same thing, because apparently, I didn't reply to your ask fast enough. For context, it is; "there are white cubans so do you enjoy cuban culture and think steve would fit in well with that? in that case you don't need to brownface a white character. or do you just want to fetishize hispanic cubans? also its really weird to make the only drug dealer character latino i mean come on......".
So first things first. No, I am not Cuban, but I am part Native American and was raised around primarily Hispanic people my entire life due to where I lived.
Second. I find it grossly performative for you to send this ask telling me not to headcanon a character a different race. I think this type of activism is extremist and unfounded in actual ideas or beliefs other than your need to feel 'better than' or superior to others.
In regard to fetishism, I would like to mention first to people that are not you, that fetishism of people of color is rampant and highly uncomfortable. It is seen recently with the new character of Miguel in the animated movie "Across The Spiderverse".
But back to the subject at hand, which happens to be my art of Steve Harrington, I want to ask where in all of my art is there fetish content? Are there multiple drawings or comments focusing on his looks? How hot I think he is? Personally, I don't see that.
I notice that in today's culture, people tend to throw around new words they learned to use as an end-all-be-all. Their winning card up their sleeve. But it's not, because you don't even use the word correctly. To make note of what fetishism is, I'll put the definitions below.
: an object or bodily part whose real or fantasied presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification and that is an object of fixation to the extent that it may interfere with complete sexual expression
or: an object of irrational reverence or obsessive devotion
To take these definitions we find that first, it is a topic for sexual gratification. And in my art, I'm personally not seeing anything sexual come into play. Sure, I put him in crop tops and short shorts. But I do that because I feel it fits his character regardless of race because of his personality and the time they were living in. I personally wear crop tops and don't set out to be sexualized, so if you see it in that way, I fear we may be encroaching on what I consider a "you problem".
Third, on you speculating on why I can't just keep Steve Harrington white as he is in canon. In multiple places, I do in fact mention that I am not drawing canon. I'm drawing headcanons. Headcanons, described by the dictionary, is "something that a fan imagines to be true about a character even though no information supporting that belief is spelled out in the text." So, this ask isn't quite viable seeing that I have never said I was drawing the canon version of Steve Harrington.
Fourth, you mention that I "brownface". I fear that you may also be the person that had a dry broom handle fucked up their ass when the new Ariel movie came out.
Fifth, you say that my half-Latino Eddie Munson is "a bad look". To this, I find it interesting that your first connection was drug dealing alongside a Latino character. Personally, I didn't take drug dealing into consideration. And rather a funny headcanon I saw of someone saying Latino Wayne Munson would cook peppers to "smoke" Eddie and his friends out of the house. And again, as someone who was raised primarily by Hispanic influence, my mother did the exact same thing. If you decide that every Latino character is based on stereotypes, then live your life that way, but don't tell me what is and isn't a bad look, seeing that you are the only person who has a problem with it.
Sixth, you ask why I don't just draw the canon characters of color. I will. I have sketches of them. But since you obviously have looked through my art, you might notice that I only really draw the older teens. They are my favorite to talk about and draw.
On that, Isn't it interesting that there are only three people of color in the show? Two are siblings, and one is a side character introduced in the last published season. This is why I add people of color into my headcanons. I find, that if I can do whatever I want with a personal interpretation of a character, I am going to add diversity where I can.
I think it's important as a culture of fans that produce new content over a piece of media, to fix, change, and do what the original writers didn't. We see this commonly in sexuality headcanons because there aren't that many canon lgbtq+ characters. Typically, fan-given content adds minority or oppressed groups that the original creators did not give. Because frankly, people of color deserve to see themselves in the media. Lgbtq+ people deserve to see themselves in the media. If we continue to stay true to canon exactly with all of our fan spaces, we would be found boring, repetitive, and stale. The idea of fan spaces is to take canon and expand it. To have fun with it and to add ideas and quirks to the characters that other people can relate to where they once could not.
I will not apologize for getting bored of every character being white. I will not change what I am doing either. Because I am not doing anything wrong, moral, or unjust in any way. I think the main problem comes with you finding so much hate with a silly drawing of Steve Harrington simply because he isn't white. So I wonder why you find him and Eddie not being white so concerning.
I hope this helps.
