From the Ground Up: How to Choose Flooring That Sets the Tone for Your Entire Home
When it comes to designing a home, we often focus on furniture, color schemes, and décor. However, one of the most foundational elements of any space is often overlooked: flooring. Your flooring sets the stage for the rest of your design choices, influencing the mood, functionality, and aesthetic of the entire room. Whether you're renovating or building from scratch, selecting the right flooring can make or break the feel of your home.
In this blog, we’ll explore how to choose the perfect flooring to complement your style and enhance your home’s atmosphere—from classic hardwood to modern tile—and help you make a decision that lasts for years to come.

1. Consider the Function of the Space
The first step in choosing the right flooring is considering how each space will be used. Different rooms in your home require different types of flooring depending on traffic, durability, and maintenance needs.
High-Traffic Areas (Living Rooms, Hallways): For spaces with heavy foot traffic, durability is key. Hardwood, bamboo, and engineered wood are great choices for living areas and hallways, as they are both stylish and long-lasting. If you're after something even more durable, consider luxury vinyl or tile, which can withstand wear and tear without sacrificing aesthetics.
Wet Areas (Kitchens, Bathrooms, Laundry Rooms): For kitchens and bathrooms, moisture resistance is crucial. Ceramic or porcelain tile is a great option, as it’s water-resistant, easy to clean, and comes in a variety of styles. Alternatively, waterproof vinyl and laminate options have improved significantly in recent years and are excellent for spaces prone to water exposure.
Comfort Zones (Bedrooms, Family Rooms): Bedrooms and family rooms are spaces where comfort is a priority. Carpet is still a popular option for bedrooms due to its softness and warmth underfoot. If you prefer a cleaner look with easy maintenance, hardwood or luxury vinyl plank (LVP) with area rugs can also work well to create a cozy vibe.
Why It Works: Understanding the function of each space helps you choose a floor that not only looks great but also performs well for your lifestyle.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to think about acoustics! Carpet or rugs can soften sound in bedrooms and living rooms, while hard surfaces like tile or wood may make spaces with high ceilings feel louder.
2. Match Flooring to Your Home’s Style
Your flooring should complement your overall design style. Whether you lean toward traditional, modern, industrial, or rustic, the right flooring can tie your entire design scheme together.
Traditional Homes: Classic hardwood floors in oak or maple are timeless options that pair well with traditional furniture and ornate décor. If you’re after a more luxurious feel, marble or travertine tiles in entryways or bathrooms offer sophistication without looking too modern.
Modern and Contemporary Spaces: Sleek and minimalist designs often call for modern flooring options. Light-colored wood, concrete floors, or large-format tiles in neutral tones like gray or white can provide the clean, streamlined look typical of contemporary interiors. For an added touch of style, consider polished concrete or terrazzo floors for an ultra-modern edge.
Rustic or Farmhouse Style: For a cozy, rustic feel, reclaimed wood, distressed wood, or engineered hardwood floors can add character and warmth. Natural stone tiles, such as slate or flagstone, can also enhance the earthy, farmhouse vibe, especially in kitchens or entryways.
Industrial Loft Style: In industrial spaces, concrete, exposed wood, or even cork floors fit right in with raw, unfinished textures. Pair them with exposed beams, metal accents, and large windows to highlight the industrial aesthetic.
Why It Works: Flooring is one of the largest surfaces in a room, and it serves as a foundation for the entire design. When your flooring aligns with your style, it ensures the space feels cohesive and intentional.
Pro Tip: If you’re unsure about committing to one style, mix and match flooring types in different rooms. For example, you might use hardwood in the living room and sleek porcelain tiles in the kitchen to highlight their unique styles.

3. Think About Durability and Maintenance
Durability and ease of maintenance are crucial when selecting flooring, especially in areas with high traffic or where spills are common (like the kitchen or bathroom).
Wood Floors: While beautiful, natural hardwood floors require more maintenance, as they can scratch easily and are vulnerable to moisture. Engineered wood is a more durable alternative with similar aesthetics but greater resistance to environmental changes. Regular refinishing may also be needed for hardwood to maintain its shine and integrity over time.
Tile: Porcelain or ceramic tiles are incredibly durable, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean, making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or entryways. They’re also stain-resistant and available in a wide range of finishes, from matte to glossy, which can fit any style.
Vinyl and Laminate: For an affordable, low-maintenance option, vinyl and laminate floors are great choices. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) can mimic the look of wood or stone but is far easier to maintain. It's also waterproof, making it a fantastic option for bathrooms and kitchens. Laminate is similarly durable and resistant to scratches but should be kept away from areas prone to excessive moisture.
Carpet: While carpet offers softness and warmth, it requires more upkeep and can stain easily. However, if you have children or pets, opt for carpets made from durable, stain-resistant fibers like nylon or polyester. Regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning are necessary to keep it in good condition.
Why It Works: Choosing a floor that matches your maintenance preferences helps ensure you enjoy your space for years to come. It also reduces the likelihood of wear and tear that could detract from your home’s overall look.
Pro Tip: Consider your long-term lifestyle. If you’re planning to sell your home soon, consider flooring options that are both durable and appealing to a broad range of buyers (such as hardwood or tile).
4. Color and Texture: Setting the Mood
Floor color and texture play a huge role in the atmosphere of a room. Whether you want to create a serene, spacious environment or a cozy, intimate atmosphere, your flooring choice can enhance that feeling.
Lighter Floors: Light-colored floors, such as blonde wood or whitewashed oak, can make a space feel larger and more open. They are perfect for small rooms or homes with lots of natural light, as they reflect light and help keep the space feeling airy.
Darker Floors: Darker floors like rich mahogany or deep charcoal create a sense of warmth and intimacy. Dark floors tend to work best in large spaces or rooms with lots of natural light, as they can make the space feel more grounded and cozy.
Textured Finishes: Textured floors—like distressed wood, matte stone, or textured vinyl—add visual interest and depth to a room. They’re also great for hiding dirt and scratches, which can be a plus in high-traffic areas or homes with pets and children.
Why It Works: The color and texture of your floors can completely change the mood of a room. Lighter floors often create a sense of openness, while darker floors can add warmth and sophistication.
Pro Tip: If you’re uncertain about committing to a bold color or texture, start with a neutral floor and add color through rugs or furniture. This allows you to experiment with different styles and moods without a huge commitment.
5. Budget and Longevity
Flooring choices can vary significantly in price, and it’s important to select a material that fits within your budget while also offering long-term value.
Budget-Friendly Options: Laminate, vinyl, and carpet tend to be more affordable than hardwood or stone tiles. These materials can be a good choice for areas where you need durability but are working within a limited budget.
Investment-Worthy Flooring: If you're looking for long-term value and are willing to invest a bit more upfront, hardwood, natural stone, and high-end tile floors offer timeless appeal and durability that can last for decades with proper care.
Why It Works: Setting a clear budget ensures that you’re making a flooring decision that fits both your aesthetic desires and your financial situation. It also helps you prioritize the areas where you want to invest more.
Pro Tip: Keep in mind that while high-end flooring options might come with a larger upfront cost, they can add value to your home and require less maintenance over time.
Conclusion: Let Your Floors Set the Stage
Choosing the right flooring is a vital step in creating a home that reflects your style, meets your needs, and feels comfortable to live in. By considering factors like function, durability, style, and color, you can select flooring that enhances your space and sets the tone for the rest of your design. Whether you opt for the timeless elegance of hardwood or the practicality of vinyl, your floors are the foundation of your home’s aesthetic—and a great place to start when designing your dream space.

Character Intro: Trochilus (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicknames- Lord of the Mills by the people of Olympius
Troy by his brother and friends
Babe by his wife
Dad by his sons
Uncle T by his nephew
Age- 34 (immortal)
Location- Achaea, Olympius
Personality- He's content with his status as a minor deity and has satisfaction in his work; not having the need to be awarded with attention & praise. He wants to enjoy the comforts of immortal life without the drama of the pantheon. He's married.
He has the standard abilities of a god except shapeshifting. As god of the mill wheel his other powers/abilities include rodakinesis (wheel manipulation), flour generation/manipulation, and being able to telekinetically control farming equipment.
Trochilus is the younger brother of Triptolemus (god of farming). Other members of his immediate family include his wife Promylaia, his father-in-law Cyamites (god of beans), his sister-in-law Eunostos (goddess of the flour mill), his nephew Deipneus (god of cooking & breadmaking), as well as his sons Matton (god of meals) and Keraon (god of baking & wine mixing).
He shares a thirty acre farmland with his older brother & Eunostos. Trochilus and his wife live on the property in a modern farmhouse style home. Promylaia did all of the interior design. Most of the walls (except for the kitchen & bathrooms) are covered in a gorgeous pastel mint green wallpaper patterned with gold shears of wheat. There's a great mix of modern and vintage furniture pieces- like the china that displays his wife's collection of antique gravy bowls. There's also a wraparound porch, many windows, ceramic and clay pottery pieces, rustic lighting, & natural wood flooring.
Trochilus is a native of Eleusis. He doesn't remember much of his early years. After officially becoming a deity, he does remember traveling to Corinth to help out in the Titanomachy by feeding troops in the Olympian Army. As a medic, Trochilus saw the horrors of the soldiers returning from the battlefields- deceased & horrifically injured. He was under the mentorship of Eumolpus, an Eleusinian demi-god who has since faded.
He'll start off most mornings with a hot shower & a ride through the farm on his horse Bluebell.
One of the greatest gifts he's ever recieved is an Imperial Gold pin in the shape of a mill wheel from his brother. He wears the pin on his shirts daily.
Trochilus and his wife take turns in the kitchen. He loves when she makes a HUGE spread for breakfast- rizogalo, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage gravy, and her delicious honey butter biscuits! He also knows that she loves when he makes gaeran jim along with baesuk. On the days he's late for work, Trochilus will settle for a bowl of Earthly Harvest honey o's cereal or an ultra crunchy granola bar.
He loves listening to country, folk, bluegrass, jazz, & rock music. His favorite musical act is the folk rock band Chapters of Lore whose lead singer is his one of his good friends Pan (god of the wild, satyrs, shepherds, & rustic music).
A go-to drink for him is cheongju, a refined rice wine. He also likes his homemade banana milk, sujeonggwa, mineral water, his wife's honey citrus lemonade, red wine, mint juleps, cola, white wine, champagne, ginger ale, hard cider beer, good farmer cocktails, and mimosas. His usuals from The Roasted Bean is a large espresso & an olympian sized coconut-banana splash.
Trochilus keeps in shape through working out and taekwondo.
He doesn't mind that he doesn't have a temple built in his honor. He feels that the true mark of a deity is the service they provide for all beings.
Trochilus is grateful for his brother and is proud of all of his accomplishments. They enjoy their time together when they're not working- like playing football at the nearby park, checking out a baseball game on TV or at a stadium, or traveling to Athens for a game of golf with their father-in-law. He was the first to know about his brother's past with Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture).
His all time favorite frozen treat is bingsu, especially the mango one. He also enjoys Triptolemus' homemade pear ice cream.
In the pantheon, Trochilus is known for his savory bulgogi.
He's had a few love affairs with dryads, anthousai, and leimonaiads before Promylaia. Their initial meeting was a meet cute set up by his brother & Eunostos. He's forever grateful that they meddled in his love life.
He loves snacking on spicy tzatziki flavored potato chips.
Trochilus often says that Promylaia is the best thing that ever happened to him with the other great moments being the birth of their sons. She's his best friend & amourous lover that Trochilus shares everything with- fear, doubts, and insecurities. With having a great business relationship, they enjoy their time together outside of work as well. Whether it's checking out a new restaurant, going for an early evening walk, skinny dipping in their private pond, or even incorporating food in their lovemaking!
His primary source of income is from the business he co-owns with his wife, brother, & sister-in-law- The Achaean Flour Company. Their various types of flour are sold in supermarkets and grocery stores throughout Olympius. Trochilus designed the company's logo. He's also a member of the Farming Union of Olympius.
Trochilus' nephew has a sandwich inspired by him at The Bread Box, Deipneus' restaurant business. The gilgeori toast sandwich consists of lightly toasted milk bread, a fried egg, shredded cabbage, fried ham, green onions, spicy ketchup, and sliced cheese.
A guilty pleasure of his is kimchi pizza. On the weekends he and his wife will order a few olympian sized pizzas. He loves drizzling sriracha on them!
Trochilus is an avid baseball fan! His favorite team is the Achaean Aces. He hopes the team will make it to the upcoming Olympian Series, the country's biggest baseball event. A few months ago, he really enjoyed checking out a baseball game (featuring the Aces) along with his sons and nephew at Olympian Field. They enjoyed their eating of soft baked pretzels, gyro hot dogs, tzatziki popcorn, and a seemingly neverending cups of beer costing three drachmas.
He loves his sons a great deal. He looks forward to when they visit home, but he also doesn't mind traveling to New Olympus to see them. They all (along with Triptlemus & Deipneus) often play basketball together. Even though he doesn't have a favorite child, Trochilus often finds himself closer to Matton.
He holds the most respected agricultural deity Eubouleus (god of the swine & ploughing) in high regard. In the pantheon he's also good friends with Corymbus (Cory) (god of the ivy), Hestia (goddess of the hearth), Záchari (god of confectionery), Kópros (god of manure & excrement), Apólafsi (god of enjoyment), Oeno (goddess of berries & wine), Karmanor (demi-god of the harvest), Spermo (goddess of grains), and Priapus (god of fertility, vegetable gardens, livestock, sexuality, & masculinity).
Trochilus' favorite dessert is his wife's tarte à la bouillie. He also likes Eunostos' beignets and his brother's songpyeon.
From Olympic Chef, he loves the extra crispy fried calamari with sriracha dipping sauce.
Trochilus went above and beyond when planning his wife's surprise party for her recent birthday. With Eunostos' help, he rented a space at Vasileia Hall, a popular banquet hall in the Hearthwood neighborhood of New Olympus. The party had a western theme and he hired a live band that performed all their favorite country hits! There was an aesthetic seating area for the guests with fake hay bales & cowhide printed blankets. There was also a DIY cowboy hat station where guests could decorate their own cowboy hats! Drinks served there included espresso martinis, old fashioneds, whiskey sours, and whiskey lemonade. The menu included cowboy caviar served with tortilla chips, bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers, chili cheese hot dogs, fried chicken, moussaka, & baked mac n' cheese. The birthday girl was of course elated and all the guests enjoyed themselves! Hestia made the birthday cake- a doberge cake. After the cutting of cake, Trochilus gave Promylaia one of her birthday gifts- a pancake stack jeweled clutch from Diamond Ave. Matton and Keraon presented their mom with a caricature portrait they did of the entire family.
He is a proud gourmand! The ultimate foodie! Trochilus feels like a kid in a candy store anytime he's trying out the latest street food or restaurant. He finds a certain quality in all eateries from casual dining and fast food to fine dining & food trucks. A lot of Trochilus' posts on his Fatestagram page is a food lover's dream.
In Achaea's capital Patras, he found a food truck that has some of his favorite street food ever like hotteok, tteokbokki, lamb gyros, and dakgangjeong.
Trochilus is also planning a trip with Cory to Athens for the state's annual olive festival.
His favorite meal is his wife's jambalaya with seafood gumbo.
In his free time he enjoys cooking, baking, football (soccer), bike riding, playing video games, line dancing, reading, bowling, swimming, and sailing
"Food is our common ground, a universal experience."

How to Match Mapei Timberwolf Grout with Popular Tile Colors
Tumblr media
Matching tile and grout can significantly impact your overall design. Mapei Timberwolf grout is a popular choice due to its warm, neutral tone, making it versatile for various tile types. Whether you're working with ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone, finding the right grout color can tie your whole space together, creating a seamless and aesthetic look.
Why Mapei Timberwolf Grout?
Mapei Timberwolf grout has a medium grayish-brown tone, offering a natural look that complements various tile styles. It’s neither too dark nor too light, which makes it perfect for blending with a range of popular tile colors. This grout is also known for its durability and stain resistance, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-traffic areas.
Top Tile Colors That Match Mapei Timberwolf Grout
1. White Tiles
White tiles are classic and versatile, often used in modern, minimalist, or farmhouse designs. Mapei Timberwolf grout works particularly well with white tiles because the warm undertones of the grout add a touch of softness, preventing the starkness that sometimes comes with using white tiles. This combination also provides a subtle contrast that highlights the grout lines without overwhelming the clean look of the white tiles.
Best for:
Kitchens with white subway tiles
Bathrooms with white hexagon or mosaic tiles
Backsplashes in contemporary spaces
2. Gray Tiles
Gray tiles come in various shades, from light dove gray to dark charcoal. Timberwolf grout’s neutral brownish-gray tone complements these tiles without clashing. When paired with lighter gray tiles, Timberwolf grout creates a smooth transition, maintaining a cohesive design. With darker grays, it subtly softens the overall look, adding warmth to otherwise cool-toned tiles.
Best for:
Living rooms with large-format gray tiles
Bathrooms featuring light gray floor tiles
Walk-in showers with dark gray tiles
3. Beige or Taupe Tiles
Beige and taupe tiles are perfect for creating a warm, inviting space. The earthy tones of Timberwolf grout seamlessly blend with beige tiles, offering a unified, harmonious appearance. This grout color avoids creating harsh lines, making the space feel soft and cohesive, which is especially important in areas where you want a more natural, relaxed vibe.
Best for:
Kitchen floors with beige porcelain tiles
Entryways with taupe stone tiles
Bathrooms with travertine or beige ceramic tiles
4. Marble or Stone Tiles
Natural stone tiles like marble have unique veining and color variations, which can sometimes make grout selection tricky. Timberwolf grout pairs beautifully with marble or stone tiles because it complements the natural shades found in the stone, like grays, browns, and beiges. This grout enhances the elegance of the tiles without drawing attention away from their intricate patterns.
Best for:
High-end kitchens with marble floors
Luxurious bathroom countertops or shower walls
Entryways featuring natural stone flooring
How to Select the Right Tile-Grout Combination
When matching grout to tile, always consider the following factors:
Contrast vs. Blend: Decide if you want the grout to stand out or blend with the tiles. For instance, pairing Timberwolf grout with white tiles creates contrast, making the grout lines pop. Conversely, when paired with beige or taupe tiles, it creates a seamless look.
Tile Size: Smaller tiles often have more grout lines, so a subtle, complementary grout color like Timberwolf can help prevent the space from looking too busy.
Room Size: For smaller rooms, a matching tile and grout color can create a more spacious feel. Timberwolf grout works well to create subtle cohesion without overwhelming small spaces.
Lighting: Natural and artificial lighting can affect how the grout color appears. Before finalizing your choice, test Timberwolf grout with your tile under the room’s lighting conditions to ensure you get the desired effect.
Tips for Applying Mapei Timberwolf Grout
To ensure the best results when using Mapei Timberwolf grout, consider the following tips:
Use Spacers for Even Grout Lines: Proper spacing between tiles ensures a uniform look and makes the grout lines appear more professional.
Seal the Grout: While Mapei grout is resistant to stains, applying a grout sealer can provide extra protection, especially in areas exposed to moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens.
Clean the Tiles Before and After Grouting: To avoid grout residue sticking to the tiles, ensure they are clean before application. After the grout has dried, use a damp sponge to clean off any excess.
Test on a Small Area First: Grout color can sometimes change slightly as it dries, so it's a good idea to apply it to a small section first to ensure it achieves the desired color.
Conclusion
Mapei Timberwolf grout is a fantastic choice for a variety of tile colors. Whether you're working with classic white, contemporary gray, warm beige, or natural stone tiles, Timberwolf grout’s neutral and earthy tones will enhance your design, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal. With careful consideration of contrast, room size, and lighting, you can achieve a beautifully cohesive look that stands the test of time.

Hey there, home improvement enthusiast! Are you looking to give your bathroom a fresh, stylish upgrade? Let's talk about one of the most impactful changes you can make: the Bathroom Vanity. This essential fixture not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your space but also adds functionality and convenience. In this article, we'll dive into everything you need to know about bathroom vanities, from choosing the right style to installation tips. Ready to transform your bathroom? Let's get started!
Why a Bathroom Vanity?
A bathroom vanity is more than just a sink and a cabinet. It's the centerpiece of your bathroom, combining style and utility in one neat package. Think of it as the crown jewel of your bathroom decor. Here's why it's essential:
Functionality: Provides storage and counter space.
Aesthetic Appeal: Sets the tone for the room's design.
Value Addition: Enhances the overall value of your home.
Ever walked into a bathroom and felt an immediate sense of luxury? That's often due to a well-chosen vanity. It's like the difference between wearing an old pair of jeans and stepping into a tailored suit.
Choosing the Right Style
Selecting the perfect vanity can be overwhelming given the plethora of options. But don't worry, we've got you covered! Here are some popular styles to consider:
Modern Vanities
If you're a fan of sleek, minimalist designs, modern vanities are your go-to. These often feature clean lines, neutral colors, and innovative materials. Imagine walking into your bathroom and feeling like you're in a high-end spa. Sounds great, right?
Materials: Glass, metal, and high-gloss finishes.
Features: Floating vanities, integrated sinks.
Colors: White, black, grey, and metallic tones.
Traditional Vanities
Love the charm of classic designs? Traditional vanities offer a timeless appeal with ornate details and rich wood finishes. It's like bringing a piece of vintage elegance into your home.
Materials: Wood, marble, and ceramic.
Features: Raised panel doors, decorative molding.
Colors: Warm wood tones, cream, and muted colors.
Rustic Vanities
For those who prefer a cozy, farmhouse vibe, rustic vanities are a perfect choice. These vanities exude warmth and character with their distressed finishes and natural materials.
Materials: Reclaimed wood, stone.
Features: Open shelving, copper sinks.
Colors: Earthy tones, like brown, beige, and green.
Sizing and Placement
Now that you've got a style in mind, let's talk about size and placement. It's crucial to choose a vanity that fits your bathroom space perfectly. Here's a handy guide:
Small Bathrooms: Opt for compact vanities (18-24 inches). Wall-mounted options save floor space.
Medium Bathrooms: Go for standard sizes (24-36 inches). You can include additional storage options like drawers and cabinets.
Large Bathrooms: Consider double vanities (48-72 inches). These offer ample counter space and storage for a luxurious feel.
Think of your vanity as a puzzle piece. It needs to fit just right to complete the picture without overwhelming the space or looking out of place.
Materials and Finishes
The materials and finishes of your vanity play a crucial role in its durability and look. Here's what you need to know:
Countertops
Granite: Durable and stylish, but requires sealing.
Quartz: Non-porous and low-maintenance.
Marble: Luxurious but prone to staining.
Cabinets
Solid Wood: Sturdy and long-lasting, but more expensive.
MDF: Cost-effective and resistant to moisture.
Plywood: A good balance between cost and durability.
Installation Tips
Installing a vanity might seem daunting, but with the right approach, it can be a smooth process. Here are some tips to guide you:
Measure Twice: Ensure your vanity fits the space and aligns with plumbing.
Level It Out: Use a level to ensure the vanity is perfectly horizontal.
Secure Properly: Attach the vanity to wall studs for stability.
Connect Plumbing: Reconnect your sink and faucet to the plumbing system. If you're not confident, don't hesitate to call a professional.
Maintenance and Care
To keep your vanity looking pristine, regular maintenance is key. Here's how:
Clean Regularly: Wipe down surfaces with a mild cleaner.
Avoid Standing Water: Prevent water damage by drying off surfaces after use.
Seal Stone: If you have stone countertops, seal them periodically to prevent staining.
youtube
Conclusion
Choosing and installing the perfect bathroom vanity can seem like a daunting task, but it's a rewarding one. Remember, your vanity is not just a functional piece; it's a statement of your style and a focal point in your bathroom. So take your time, explore your options, and don't be afraid to make a bold choice. After all, a well-chosen vanity can transform your bathroom from ordinary to extraordinary. Ready to get started on your bathroom makeover? Happy decorating!
