ok, if you're a beginner and are interested in getting into fountain pens, i recommend jetpens' beginner guide because it's pretty alright
note: i don't recommend shopping at jetpens - they aren't bad by any means, but goulet pens is family owned and gives you a lollipop and sticker freebie with every order! i prefer them because of that. they also just have better customer service and, like, actually do sales sometimes. jetpens never does sales and when they do the deals are Bad
for beginner pens i personally recommend, if you wanna go REALLY cheap, get a jinhao shark. they use international standard cartridges AND include a converter for under five dollars! people seem to really like the pilot metropolitan for beginners, but i personally hate it for its garbage converter, proprietary fill system, and slippery grip section. the lamy safari has a triangle grip that some people hate and it also uses proprietary lamy fill systems, but it is far superior in my opinion. if you want to play it safe, i would go with pilot - lamy has some quality control issues. if you want to cross your fingers for a really good batch and experience, go lamy. for other options, check out the beginner pen selection on goulet's site! if you have any questions about specific pens in that selection then send an ask, i am insane and will probably have more information for you
do not buy disposable fountains as your first pens - they aren't representative of the experience.
info on different ways to fill your pen are here! i will always recommend bottled ink over cartridges - there's more options and bottled ink is better for the environment!
for inks, i'll always recommend waterman intense black if you want a black ink. it's nothing if not reliable! for more colorful options, try the pilot iroshizuku line. they're amazing!!!! please note that SHIMMER INKS are NOT for beginners. if you want glitter, make sure to practice with other inks and pens first so you know you like the hobby... glitter is not for the faint of heart in the fountain pen world. do not buy any NOODLER'S INK, the guy who owns it is a trump supporter and conspiracy theorist.
for paper, i would recommend not using something super textured or fibrous, as the fibers can get caught in your pen and cause a clog. printer paper is crummy but not the absolute worst - your ink WILL feather and bleed somewhat, but it won't be terrible. for dedicated paper, try rhodia, tomoe river paper (MY FAVORITE), or clairfontaine! you don't have to worry too much about this if you're a beginner, just make sure not to use your pens on highly textured paper
there's a lot more i could talk about, so again, feel free to ask! this is just the basics =)

A few weeks ago I came upon a sale of these fountain pens on Amazon. All five for less than £5, how could I resist? If they weren't that good, I could always use them as backpack pens (I always keep a few pens in my backpack because you never know when you need one or two).
I didn't expect much, but they definitely went beyond those expectations. Not the most comfortable fountain pen to write with, but also considerably comfortable than more expensive ones I've tried (although only in stores). They're clearly meant to be Lamy look-a-like and I think they do that well. You could choose between fine and extra fine nib, I took extra fine since my writing is pretty messy (as you can see).
All in all, I'm very happy with them and I'm going to give the chartreuse(-ish) one to my mum, who have always wanted a fountain pen.
Tumblr media
Fountain pens: Jinhao 619 Resin (5-pack, Amazon, original price £9.99)
Ink: Parker Quink Black & Diamine Soft Mint
Paper: Midori MD Notebook Blank Pages
Tumblr media
(I've only tested two of them, but I'm going to assume the other three are exactly the same.)

Honestly probably just a resurgence. Ik quite a few people irl who bought back in as a nostalgia thing. On the topic of pens though, what type of pens do you collect? Do you only collect a specific type or is it more broad?
I guess collab and such keep Casio afloat, but then, I saw Swatch doing a Dragon Ball Z collab a while ago so hey. Plus watch fans are plenty out there, and from what I can see people sometimes get watches as a way to pushback?? against smart watches? (idk I wear both smart band and a watch so.) and follow the recent "dumbing down" trend (I don't know how else I can call it). So watches still float along ;w;)b
Oh man, what pen I do not collect!! I have a shitton of pens of various types but I am really into fountain pens and inks!! I have over 100 inks in my collection, I had to stop getting new ones because I ran out of space haha (and place I rented out introduced mould which..... had to trash a few bottles and I still keep watch even over two years later orz) but I try to at least pay attention to trends >w<)b Almost every year I try to use my inks during the inkdarktober (this year being a bit of an exception) so I can also invite you to search that up on my blog 'w')b
I wanted to get into Japanese fountain pens collecting but a few years ago I was effectively priced out of that bit, so for now I mostly just buy whatever strikes my fancy when I have funds or when something is on sale? I mostly get Lamy Safaris and Alstars these days, they are colorful and I really like how they feel in hand, I want to hunt down some cheaper Pelikans (M200 maybe), alas I cannot afford anymore my fav Sailors ;w;)a I posted my collection a while ago, it didn't grow much since then! Alas I am not involved much in general "community" since it's pretty much shitton of consumerism and man, not much point to do anything but look... Which kinda sucks really sigh.
(I also have an absolute ton of drawing pens, but those are not pens that I collect in any way lol I just use them.... Just artist pain sniff... I don't know how am I gonna store all those in a new place lol)

Link Love: Lamy's Inky Drama
This past week was full of news about Lamy. We already posted about the sale of Lamy to Mitsubishi but Friday every phone at the Baltimore Pen Show lit up like the ink equivalvent of an Amber Alert when the NYTimes article about Lamy’s re-release of Dark Lilac was published. There were many comments about how it must have clearly been a slow news day if the NYTimes was writing about fountain pen…

i've spent the last year with green ink (iroshizuku in shin-ryoku) in a purple pen (the ohto dude, fine nib) and purple ink (iroshizuku in murasaki-shikibu) in a white pen (vintage pen, medium nib), and at today's blessed stationery store annual sale i treated myself to grey ink (iroshizuku in fuyu-syogun) and a green pen (lamy al-star, ultra-fine nib) and now. now i have the conundrum: do i continue being anti-conformist with what colour ink lives in what pen, or do i finally colour-coordinate? or do i go based on which colour i want to use with which nib size??

my favourite stationery store (and the last one in the area where I live 😭) is closing at the end of the year, and I'm really sad about it 😭
I saw they were having a sale so I figured I'd buy a few pencils and stuff like that that I need anyway. then I talked to the owner for 15 minutes, he told me that they're closing and why, so then I bought a Lamy fountain pen and two ballpoint pens instead (I don't even use ballpoint pens, especially not the Lamy ones because I don't like how they write, but 😭)

You're going to be the drain of all my birthday money with all this talk about fountain pens RIP
Anyway, I'm hooked, do you have any recommendations for pens that feel really nice but are under $100?? Do they exist?
To make matters worse: I'm a lefty, so I don't know if I even could write with one. But I'm also an artist, so I could try drawing.
Thanks for all your advice!!
I regret nothing, let your wallet suffer as mine has!
please god no don't be like me
Not only do the pens you ask about exist, I have several recommendations for fountain pens under $100, fret not! There's a fountain pen for every budget, but I especially have some great recs if you want something that feels luxurious without paying top dollar.
My top recommendation in your case would be the Lamy Safari or the AL-Star (and you can go for one of the special limited editions that are on sale pretty much everywhere right now; you can find the regular editions under $20 at Amazon and some other online retailers; the AL-Star is a little more expensive).
Tumblr media
Here's my reasoning:
1. They're not expensive.
2. Interchangeable nibs. Find that the fine is too thick? Why buy a whole ass other pen? Buy an extra-fine nib! And yes, technically many fountain pens have interchangeable nibs, but the Lamy's are by far the simplest I've encountered.
3. Lamy makes a left-handed nib (designated by LH). Now, this might make a big difference or not, but I have some lefty friends who swear by them, and they're not hard to find, nor are they more expensive than the regular nibs.
4. They're light. This can be a good thing or a bad one depending solely on your own preference, but since you seem to be interested in trying to draw with it, lighter is usually better (according to my fountain-pen peeps who actually draw with them!)
OK, so, it's no secret I love the Lamy Safari/AL-Stars -- they're my daily drivers, and have been for several years. However, not everyone is a fan, and that's OK! Here are some things people don't like so much about it:
1. The triangular grip -- while the grip is there to make sure you keep the pen at the correct position when you write, some people don't like it, because they grip the pen a little differently. This may be especially true for lefties -- if you've adapted your grip to write overhand, for example, the angle may be a little bit uncomfortable.
2. It doesn't come with a converter. Yeah, this one bothers me as well. There are plenty of cheap pens around that give us a converter to use bottled ink. The Safari doesn't -- if you want a converter to come with your pen, you have to shell out for the AL-Star. Lamy, why??
3. The line may be thicker than you expect. This is especially true for people who want very, very fine lines (usually for sketching, or if they have handwriting like my wife's, whose writing resembles morse code to the naked eye). This is true for most European-style nibs. If you want like, hairline-fine nibs, you gotta go for the Japanese extra fines!
If you'd like to delve much, much deeper into the countless other recommendations I have, see below the cut! You've been warned!
Here are some other recommendations, from least expensive to most expensive! I'm attaching links to certain fountain pen retailers, but feel free to look for these models elsewhere.
1. Jinhao X450/x750 ($6-$10)
Tumblr media
Pros: Cheap, hefty, comes with a converter, several colour options
Cons: May be too heavy, nib comes in medium (and it can be juicy!). Luckily, you can buy separate #6 nibs that you can swap out.
2. Jinhao 8802 ($12-$20)
Tumblr media
Pros: Cheap, pretty, good heft, comes with a converter, and comes in a fine nib!
Cons: ... struggling to think of any, tbh! I love this little pen!
3. Hong Dian Forest Series ($15-$20)
Tumblr media
Pros: IT PRETTY and also one of the most reliable pens I own. Comes with a converter, fine nib options, it's all-metal.
Cons: May be a little too slim if you have big hands!
4. Diplomat Magnum ($18-$25)
Tumblr media
Pros: Ink-window so you can see your ink level, converter included, soft-touch nib (it can take a bit more pressure from people not used to fountain pens), several colour options
Cons: It's light. Very, very light, and some people really don't like that. It also has a triangle grip, so avoid if you're not into that.
5. Platinum Plaisir ($17-$43)
Tumblr media
Pros: Japanese fine nib, so it goes very fine. Also, the Platinum seal on the cap is fucking phenomenal -- this shit NEVER dries out.
Cons: These nibs are pretty stiff and have a little feedback (a Platinum quirk). Also, the crazy difference in price reflects the addition of special editions.
See also: Platinum Preppy, Prefounte (cheaper!) and Procyon (expensive!)
6. Pilot Metropolitan ($15-$30)
Tumblr media
Pros: classy look, good weight, smoothest fine nibs you'll find pretty much everywhere
Cons: a converter is included, but it is the shittiest one imaginable!
See also: Pilot Kakuno, Explorer (close or cheaper), Prera (expensive)
7. TWSBI Diamond 580 AL R ($50-$70)
Tumblr media
Pros: It's a piston filler -- that means instead of that measly little cartridge or converter, you get a massive chunk of the pen body to house the ink! And it's a demonstrator, so you can see it sloshing around. It also has Fine and Extra-Fine nib options.
Cons: the TWSBI fine nibs are closer to the Lamy fines than the Pilot/Platinum ones -- they're overall juicier, which may be a hindrance for lefties.
See also: TWSBI ECO (cheaper, unless we're talking special editions), TWSBI Vac700r (expensive!)
8. Lamy Studio ($70-$80)
Tumblr media
Pros: It's beautiful, comes with a converter, and has a nice weight to it without being too hefty. Plus, it takes the standard Lamy nibs -- from the Safari, AL-Star, LX, Aion, Scala, Logo, CP1... etc etc etc!
Cons: The usual with Lamy nibs (thicker line than you may expect). Plus, some people may find the grip a bit slippery (it's stainless steel).
9. Kaweco AL-Sport ($80-$90)
Tumblr media
Pros: This little pen can take a beating. Toss it in your backpack, your laundry (pls don't), run it over with your car (pls pls don't). It's very compact, as it's a pocket pen -- fits in your palm!
Cons: It... tiny. Very tiny, with teeny ink capacity to match. No converter. Short cartridges only. Clip sold separately...
See also: Kaweco Sport Classic (cheaper, along with Frosted Sport and Skyline Sport!), Kaweco Sport Brass (same price or higher) Kaweco Perkeo (cheapest!)
WHEW, there you go. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg--there are many, many more pens around in this price range and below (and obviously, above). Have fun in the rabbit hole!

What's up, @ 26?
Hello! Been poppin' here and there at this space for a while now but still struggling to write for myself. Anyway, I just want to share that I recently turned 26 last July 12! I think the first time I've been here on Tumblr was a decade ago - 15 or 16 years old. I still keep this space to read my past shenanigans, experiences, and even heartaches (I used to write about my feelings a lot - what a cringe fest lol).
At 26, I'm back at being an active fangirl of EXO (I'm a Minseok girl!!). I've been in and out of the fandom since 2014, was on hiatus for 2 years (2018 to 2020), then back now at the same time they dropped their new album. My boyfriend gifted me the Photobook version 1 of Don't Fight the Feeling for my birthday (along with a sunflower shirt he remembered I like, uwu). Since the pandemic and WFH set up started, I've been trying also quite a lot of hobbies, jumping in from one thing to another, and reviving some stuff I used to love, like being an EXO-L. I feel like I'm a baby L these days because I'm new again on stan Twitter and I feel so tita as a kpop fangirl lately because of my age.
I also rekindled my interest on fountain pens and shockingly, it's become a fast process because I now possess 11 pens (2 are not inked and not sure if they still function), and I still want more from some brands - TWSBI, Lamy, Sailor, and maybe even a Pelikan. It's an expensive hobby and I'm scared to buy and commit myself for a pen that's worth more than 1k pesos (I'm almost there! My recent purchase was just on sale but its original price is 1k, haha). Let's see.
They say 26 is still young but I'm feeling the need to become more responsible lately, like, I want to buy a house for my family before getting married, keeping up with my savings and our wedding savings, and at the same time, taking care of my mental health. I wanna write about my struggles and mental health wellness also but that's for a next post, I guess.
Overall, I'm still staying at home and working diligently for books, treating myself from time to time, and trying to become that good daughter I promised my parents ever since. I guess I'm getting there.

obligatory line above the cut
well personally i think i should not have to get up early to work on saturday when yesterday my coworker had to be hospitalized for a (perfectly noncontagious) medical issue & especially not when i have high octane misery, this time, for flavor, related to general unhappiness with my body & how it is gendered. the joy & profits of being fake trans for clout, &c. however. a list
1. second vaccine appointment is next week which probably is contributing somewhat to me having high anxiety levels because i Hate Shots, but i am also real excited for my future of be vaccinated + able to visit my vaccinated family
2. all of my applications for grad school are submitted & being processed, and everyone i asked to write me a letter of rec has confirmed that they'd be happy to. i will be frantically checking to see whether these letters are submitted for at least a few weeks, but, still, progress &c
3. my work project with silly little tiktok-like videos is still going pretty well. if you want to see one dm me & i will send you a vimeo link
4. we watched the fast & the furious today, which i had never seen before and still have not technically seen in full (library dvd is ten years old, skipped some scenes). i did not expect to lose my whole fucking mind over it but i did. probably some of my sulking now is just the balance out for the delight i felt earlier—water finding the level
5. we have tentative plans to camp for one night in a nearby state park! i am extremely excited about the prospect. not to dox myself but last time we went there we saw scrub jays, absolute delight
6. i made lemon syrup which is hypothetically appropriate for making instant lemonade, which hopefully we will try out this weekend
7. local stationery &c. store had a closing sale so we got a new lamy al-star in a fetching shade of purple plus some vivid coral ink for less than $20. i love fountain pens
anyway. can't wait to stop feeling like sludge so i can better enjoy this undeserved bounty. fond wishes & so on—i hope everyone is well, or, at the outside, has a list.
