Lake Vostok & Organism 46-B
Welcome to Episode 109: Lake Vostok & Organism 46-B! Underneath Antarctica’s miles of ice, you’ll find approximately 400 subglacial lakes. The largest of these is Lake Vostok, discovered during the Soviet Antarctic Expeditions of 1959/1964 and later confirmed by British scientists in the early 1970s. What makes this lake so special is that it has been covered in ice, untouched, for at least 15 million years. The intense pressure from the ice above creates an environment where organisms can thrive, grow, and live in the liquid water below. According to urban legend, Russian scientists were able to reach the liquid lake through ice core drilling in 2012, and what they found living in the water was so incredible, and so terrifying, that it was immediately sealed and kept secret from the public. Just what is Organism 46-B? Tune in to this episode to find out!
WE WANT TO BELIEVE!!!!!! IS THAT SO BAD??????

The Vostok squid's original designation was merely "Organism 46-B." This unofficial, sensational designation has been used for years as it was believed to be a hoax. The Vostok squid is an extremely rare 14-tentacled cephalopod discovered in Lake Vostok, a subglacial lake located under two miles of ice beneath the Russian research outpost Vostok (Восток) Station, in the southeast Antarctic, 1,301 kilometres (808 mi) from the Geographic South Pole, in the middle of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. When threatened or hunting, the squid will release a psychoactive hallucinogenic toxin into the water to incapacitate or immobilise prey from a distance of up to 46 meters (150 feet). Like other cephalopods indicates high intelligence and the ability to strategize— but also deep hostility.
It was rumored that the squid's tentacles were still animate (and aggressive) after being severed-this is the case with most cephalopods, as each tentacle contains enough neurons to allow them to respond to stimuli and move independently from the central brain, even after separation from the body.

Hoax of the Day: Organism 46-B
Description: On November 30th, 2016, a story “broke” that when the Russian Vostok Station research team drilled into an underground lake in Antarctica, they discovered a man-eating creature simply called Organism 46-B. It is widely believed to be a fabricated story, meant for entertainment.

“Suffer with me, I will lay you to rest and pray I follow…”
Hey! This is the askblog to my oc, Pestilence!
My Main is @minifrau
My other Pressure oc blog is @lemonliscious
Pestilence Z-444 “The Escape”
Callum Clairmont worked with a classified company upon Lake Vostok in Antarctica, a lake preserved for thousands to millions of years under kilometres of ice. Once his team managed to drill through the surface, he contracted one of the parasites from a currently unknown era. Callum grew increasingly ill, and as no medical treatment helped, offered to sign up with the Urbanshade company as they promised to help him find a cure. Urbanshade only really wanted to use this as a test. Through further study, it was discovered that Callum had a disease dating millions of years back, and fortunately was found to not be contagious. Urbanshade transported him to their underwater facility, the Hadal Blacksite where the experiments and “cure” would be executed. Their plan was to mix his DNA with that of a creature from the same era the disease originated, and accidentally overshot the procedure. The DNA was extracted from an unstable fossil, making the scientists accidentally use too much of the beast’s genetics assuming they were weak. Callum was transformed into one of the creatures itself, still holding small slivers of personality and humanity while being controlled by instinct. Seeing no necessary reversal of the procedure, Callum, renamed Z-444 with code name Pestilence was used as a lab rat, being given countless diseases and ailments to see if anything could kill it. Through further scanning, it was discovered his brain had been completely shredded by the many demolishing diseases it carried. Brain tissue is currently being found all around his body.
During the breach caused by Z-13, former handyman Sebastian Solace, the gates to its heavy containment chamber were opened, allowing it to rampage the sector it had been kept, killing all personnel involved despite receiving many fatal injuries. From recovered security footage during the lockdown, it is seen that Pestilence went as far as to attack Z-13 and Z-18 “The Grinner” who assisted Z-13 with the lockdown, while also attempting to break through the facility’s glass to reach Eyefestation, undeterred by its brain-melting shockwaves. Z-444 will kill anything on sight, no matter the cause. Some survivors report it still has a voice, but this is still yet to be confirmed, being that this could be one of the many hallucinations in the Blacksite. Note, it is highly photosensitive.
Tumblr media
Extra info!:
Pestilence has no set voice, its altered throat rarely making consistent octaves or tones. In fact, its speaking is more just rumbles resembling words. I mean, for a general voice claim I would say Cyn (Murder Drones German Dub).
Blud is probably constantly having a terrible fever.
Despite what it may seem, Pestilence was and is a male.
Since a full body ref will be (eventually) made, envision him like a quite large "woolly" crocodile/dinosaur, having much straighter and taller legs.
Basic DNI's!
No NSFW, suggestive jokes are fine. (To some extent.)
Pestilence's lines will be in Red.
Mod/Me! Call me Minifrau or Peghita! I AM A MINOR. Nicknames slay! (Im new to tumblr roleplaying!)

Salmonids of Artechocene Antarctica:
While thawing, the glaciers of Antarctica created an abundance of meltwater streams that now feed countless kilometres of freshwater ecosystems. At first nothing more than insect larvae and some crustaceans called these new environments home, but eventually fish entered the equation and quickly dominated.
One group of these fish were salmonids coming from South American coasts, descendants of invasive species such as the brown trout. They weren't the first, but they were much better at filling a lot of niches than the native Nothotenioids, which lacked hemoglobin and swim bladders.
And so they almost outcompeted these to extinction, and diversified into several genera classified roughly in three distinct groups: Helaks, Helerrets, and Valhallaks.
Tumblr media
Most of the Helaks species are amongst the largest predators of the continent, and the Golden Helaks (Gjollsalmo fulgens) is the largest of them all, measuring up to 2 meters (7ft) long and more than 100kg (250lb) in weight. They're apex predators, using their size to block scape routes for prey fish of any size and swallowing them whole, preventing them from scaping thanks to its huge backwards facing teeth. They're also known to eat crustaceans and even birds that venture too deep into the water. They live in every waterway across Antarctica, with the adults being confined to the deeper canals and lakes.
Tumblr media
Helerrets are the most common salmonids that can be found in the rivers, lakes and wetlands of the continent. These medium sized predators mainly feed on the abundance of mollusks and other hard shelled invertebrates, as well as smaller vertebrates occasionally. This diet is enabled by their strong jaws, combined with blunt teeth that can crack open the shells of most freshwater invertebrates in their habitats. They're also the only Antarctic salmonids that retain the anadromous habits of its ancestors, living in freshwater but migrating to coastal waters to reproduce and release their young into the rich waters of the Southern Ocean.
The Bullheart Helerret (Slidrsalmo oatensis) in particular is native to the drainage basins that flow into Oates bay, where members of this species comes to spawn.
Tumblr media
Valhallaks are a group of salmonids with remarkable sexual dimorphism compared to their close relatives. They are typically found in shallow rivers all across the continent, where they feed on invertebrates and vegetation.
Although not as common as Helerrets, they are abundant, specially in alpine streams and lakes during the end of the summer, where they come to spawn, away from predators so their eggs are protected by ice during the winter.
The Bearded Valhallaks (Valholsalmo auratops) specifically is endemic to the Vostok river drainage basin, which originates in Vostok Lake where they reproduce.

Organism 46-B
Organism 46-B was an enormous 33ft (10m) long, 14-tentacled squid-like creature which lived in Lake Vostok, a subglacial lake located under two miles of ice beneath Vostok Station in the Antarctic. The animal had limbs that were animate and aggressive even after amputation, could release a toxin into the water to immobilize its prey from a distance of up to 150 feet, displayed an astonishing degree of shapeshifting, and showed a considerable degree of both hostility and intelligence.
Vostok Station, established by the Soviets in 1957, was discovered to have been sited atop a vast body of liquid water beneath the ice in 1974, which was subsequently named Lake Vostok after the station. After 30 years of ice core drilling, the research team finally breached through to the lake on the 5th of February 2012. This must have occurred sometime between then and the 30th November 2016 (when the story first broke), although exact dates have so far proven impossible to track down.
Dr. Anton Padalka claims to have been part of the first scientific expedition to explore the lake. “We encountered Organism 46-B on our first day. It disabled our radio - which we later learned, to our alarm, was intentional. It is also able to paralyze prey from a distance of up to 150 feet by releasing its venom into the water. Tragically my colleague and lifelong friend was killed this way."
Later, while diving in the lake, the group was attacked, the creature releasing its venom which took hold of one of them. The Organism then proceeded to kill and eat him. As Padalka stated "He tread water wearing a blissful smile as the organism approached him. We watched helplessly as it used its arms to tear off its head then popped its remains in its mouth. It was as if it had hypnotized him telepathically.”
Still, later, 46-B stalked the group, displaying its shapeshifting ability. "It shaped itself into the form of a human diver. We thought it was one of my colleagues swimming towards us in scuba gear. By the time the closest scientist had realized what it was, it had grabbed him and torn him to bits.”
Escaping the creature, a member of the team managed to lop off one of 46-B's tentacles, although the severed limb attacked the group again. "Later that night it slid across the ice bank and strangled her," stated Padalka.
After finally trapping the creature in a tank, the surviving members of the team brought it to the surface where they claim Russian officials seized the beast and told the international press that nothing had been found.
