Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 12 — Brosno Dragon
Since the 13th century there have been legends of an enormous beast lurking in a lake located in the Tver region of western Russia near a town called Andreapol. The lake is called Lake Brosno and the monster that lives in it is known as the Brosno Dragon or, more affectionally, Brosnie. Brosnie is described as being enormous, capable of swallowing boats whole with ease, and looking similar to a cross between a snake and a fish.
The first stories of Brosnie painted it as a truly vicious and terrifying creature. In the 1200s, Genghis Khan's grandson Batu Khan was leading his army towards the city of Novgorod with plans to capture it. Batu Khan and his men stopped to rest and water their horses at Lake Brosno only to be attacked by the dragon. Countless men and horses were said to have been crushed and swallowed whole by the beast and the remains of the army made a hasty retreat, giving up on their plans to invade Novgorod.
Later, Vikings aiming to hide some of their treasure on a small island in the lake were also said to have been attacked by the monster. Then, during World War II, Brosnie was said to have eaten a German airplane.
In recent years it seems the Brosno Dragon has become more mellow and shy in his old age. People who claim to see the creature say it now makes a hasty retreat back into the water once it realizes it has been spotted. It would likely be wise to respect Brosnie's privacy during his retirement lest he take up some of his old habits again.

This image was captured by a jogger by the name of Dmitry Kim in June of 2017. He claims to have spotted the Russian version of Nessie as he ran past Lake Khanto. He says that local legends claim the lake used to have swans but what he had seen looked nothing like a bird. Some people claim the monster could have been helped along by mankind, stating that local companies dump their toxic waste in the waters.
Dmitry said: "I understand that this is impossible, but the silhouette of this creature reminded me of the Loch Ness monster. It was standing there and wasn’t moving."

On this day:
BOG BEAST
On February 22, 1968, in Connemara, Ireland, farmer Stephen Coyne, along with one of his seven children, noticed a black form in the lake by the bog where they had gone to collect some dry peat for the fire. At first he thought the dog had gone for a swim, but when he whistled for it, the dog ran to him from a different direction and began to bark furiously when it spotted the blackness. The beast, which had been gliding about in the water rather aimlessly, now turned toward the dog, heading for the animal with its mouth wide open.
At this turn of events, the farmer raced toward his pet, and the creature turned away. Coyne's eight-year-old son ran back to get his mother and four siblings. The family of seven watched the beast until it was too dark to see it anymore. They described the lake animal as having a long, slender neck and no eyes on its head, but two snail-like antennae instead. Its skin was a slick black; there were two humps on its back, and it appeared to be around twelve feet long and end in a flat tail. During their vigil, they saw the beast curl its tail up toward its head, forming a circle.
Sightings of such creatures have been plentiful in the peaty loughs of Ireland. In 1954, Miss Carberry, a Connemara librarian, went fishing with some friends at Lough Fadda. While picnicking near the shore, they became alarmed when a beast with two huge humps and a forked tail headed in their direction with its sharklike mouth open. Other loch-monster witnesses in the area generally reported the creatures they saw had "an undulating wormlike movement."

The Cryptoknights
Every year, someone on ComicFury runs 30 Days of Characters, in which everyone is challenged to create a new character every day of April. Or at least a new drawing of one. This year, I'm attempting to create the cast of a syndicated cartoon from the early nineties, The Cryptoknights. First off, we have Lowell the Loveland Frog
Day Two was Carlos the Chupacabra
For Day Three, there was Solomon the Sasquatch
Day Four had Mar-Lee of the Caverns, based on any number of cryptids which are just tiny humanoids.
Day Five was Batzorig the Demon, who is not actually a demon. Also based on Batboy, kind of
On the sixth day, we had a werewolf named Shelby Blest. A lot of cryptids are just werewolves and she's one of them.
Day Seven was Floyd the Flatwoods Monster, though he was never anywhere near Flatwoods but what else am I supposed to call him?
On the eighth day, I offered my interpretation of Mothman. I did not make him sexy. At least, I don't find him sexy. Your mileage may vary.
Day Nine was my interpretation of a Thunderbird, which I decided would look like a giant crane/heron/whatever and be relatively non-threatening. I named her Tina.
Day ten was a lake monster! He's named Roger.
Day eleven saw the introduction of one of the human leads, John Dark. He's a paranormalist and would shoot and stab things if Standards and Practices had let him. Instead, he has weird little weapons.
Day twelve had his sister, Joan Dark, show up. She's a gymnast and basically fights using ribbon dancing.
Day thirteen had Lupita Cano, a girl who likes dolls and isn't actually a girl but all that's explained at the link.
On the fourteenth day, we had Agent Jorge Gonzales. A nice government agent sort of chap.
That's all there is for now, but keep an eye on this post as more will be added as I draw them.

Chapter Three
Heuvelmans Lake
Blue Ridge Mountains, GA
2006
“I don’t understand,” William said, standing on the sand and staring out at the lake as evening settled around them.
“What don’t you understand?” Scully asked, smiling at him as she placed her hand on top of his head, stroking his hair.
“Well,” William said, his brow furrowed with concentration. “You said Big Blue lives in this lake, Daddy.”
“I did,” Mulder agreed with a nod.
“And that he’s a huge lake monster.”
“Well, monster is not a word I generally like to use.” He caught Scully’s eye and she shook her head as she smiled.
“Is that right?” she asked, raising her eyebrows and tilting her head.
“Yes. I prefer…” He gestured with a hum, searching for the correct word to describe Big Blue. “I’d say he’s more of a creature. A lake creature.”
“A lake creature,” Scully said and Mulder nodded, putting his arm around William’s thin shoulders.
“Yup.”
“But, Daddy,” William said, looking up at him with his big blue eyes. “Even if he is a lake creature, he couldn’t live here. The deepest lake in America is only one thousand nine hundred and forty three feet deep and that’s Crater Lake in Oregon. We’re in Georgia and I don’t think this lake is that deep.”
“How do you…?” Mulder asked him in surprise. “How do you know the depth of Crater Lake?”
“Grandma told me about lakes and oceans when I stayed the night at her house. She has a ‘cycopedia book with information about them. She showed me.”
“Okay,” Mulder said, looking out at the water and then back at William. “So what are you thinking?”
“You said Big Blue is really big.”
“I did.”
“Well,” William said, looking out at the water and shaking his head with a deep sigh. “I don’t think this lake is big enough for Big Blue to live here. I think he would need something bigger. Like the ocean. It’s so deep. And he would have more space to move around.”
“That’s true,” Scully said, nodding as she too looked out at the lake, glancing back at Mulder with a half smile.
“It is, Daddy. I don’t think you’re right about him being here,” William said, almost sadly.
“It wasn’t me who first said he lives here,” Mulder said, shaking his head. “People have claimed it for years. I just know about it.”
“Yeah. But, I think they got it wrong too. The lake’s just not big enough for a… creature like Big Blue.”
“It’s hard to ignore the science, Mulder,” Scully said, smiling at him over William’s head.
“Science, huh?” he asked and she nodded before clapping her hands together.
“You know what? I’m hungry. Is anyone else hungry?”
“I am!” William shouted and Scully laughed.
“Let’s go get some dinner. How about pizza and then maybe some ice cream?”
“Yeah!”
They started walking to the car, his two skeptics, further discussing the improbabilities of Big Blue, but Mulder remained on the shore staring at the lake.
“I still believe,” he said quietly. “Science isn’t always completely accurate.” He smiled and nodded affectionately to the water.
As he started to leave, he heard a noise that caused him to turn around and then draw in a deep breath.
“Scully!” he called out in a loud whisper, not taking his eyes off the water and the giant creature that had just surfaced. “William! You guys… he’s… look at him! He’s beautiful!”
Big Blue looked left and right, his long neck swiveling gracefully, his round back and then his tail were visible before he slipped back under the water and out of sight, leaving Mulder completely dumbfounded.
“Mulder! Come on. We’re hungry!” Scully called to him and he shook his head in disbelief.
“Did you see him?” he asked as he hurried to her, William already in the car. “Tell me you saw him!”
“Who? Big Blue? Mulder… ”
“He was just there. Scully, I swear to you I saw him!”
She looked out at the now still lake, the ripples from Big Blue surfacing, widening out and appearing like the ebb and flow of the lake. Looking back at him, she shook her head as she placed a hand on his arm.
“I didn’t see anything,” she said quietly. “But… we’re here for three more days. Maybe that will change.”
“Yeah, maybe,” he said, looking back at the water and smiling as he thought of Big Blue and how aptly he had been named. “We packed the video camera, right? And the digital camera? And backup memory cards and extra videotapes?”
“Umm. Yes. Yes. And no,” she said.
“Then we’re going to need to make a stop after dinner, because there’s some evidence that needs to be collected.”
“You really saw something, didn’t you?” she asked softly, searching his face.
“I did.”
“Then let’s eat and we’ll go get what we need.”
“Ahh, Scully,” he said, smiling happily as that old feeling of excited anticipation stirred inside of him. “Let’s go.”

The Charles Mill Lake creature [modern urban legend/cryptid]
The Charles Mill Lake is a large reservoir located in Ohio, USA. According to a local urban legend, the lake is home to a strange creature, usually referred to as simply “the Charles Mill Lake monster” or “Charles Mill Lake creature”.
Supposedly, the creature was sighted in March of 1959: three young men – Michael Lane, Dennis Patterson and Wayne Armstrong – witnessed a strange being emerging from the water. It was a tall figure, about 7 feet in length (2.1m) and with a roughly humanoid shape. The creature had noticeably green eyes and its most striking characteristic was that it lacked arms.
After the three boys escaped, tracks were found that bore some semblance to the webbed footgear typically worn by skin divers. Whatever they saw (if they even saw anything at all), the creature wouldn’t be seen again until 1963 when someone witnessed a similar, green-eyed being coming out of the water. It was described as ‘luminous’. However I’ve seen claims that this sighting was actually of a different – if similar – cryptid. This is, of course, impossible to verify.
In 1975, cryptozoology author Loren Coleman travelled to the lake to interview locals about the supposed lake monster and to examine the environment. He found that the lake’s swampy surroundings would make for an ideal habitat for a being like the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
To be honest, I’m surprised the story survived for almost 70 years, given that there were only one or two sightings of the supposed creature and no evidence for the existence of an undiscovered species in the Charles Mill Lake. But it eventually became a regional legend nonetheless, and visitors can read the story on a framed board at the Charles Mill Lake Marina. Is there truly an armless gillman-like creature that lives in Ohio? I’m inclined to say no, but I admit it’s fun to theorize about.

Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 29 — Igopogo
Lake Simcoe in Ontario, Canada is said to be home to a lake monster that goes by many names. It is most commonly called Igopogo—likely inspired by Ogopogo from Lake Okanagon—but it is also known as Beaverton Bessie, Simcoe Kelly, and Kempenfelt Kelly which is in reference to Kempenfelt Bay where most of the sightings have occurred over the last century.
Igopogo not only has many names but it is also said to have wildly variable features. Some witnesses claim it is only around ten feet in length while other say it is closer to seventy feet long. Most reports describe it as looking similar to a seal or otter with a long neck and large eyes but some others say it is more serpent or dragon-like in appearance with horns and fins.

Heading into a dive in some lake in Minnesota with Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har
LIPPY THE LION, in his insistence that Hardy, his hyaenal companion, shouldn't take like too depressingly: Hardy, let it be hoped that while we're diving, you're not thinking about the likes of lake monsters, lake weeds eating you up alive, half-crazed fish and stuff like that? HARDY HAR HAR, ever realising his lot is probably not a happy one: And I keep wondering myself why it is that my mind is so directed while diving, to begin with! LIPPY THE LION: And just let me remind you that a certain Scooby-Doo has disproven the whole notion of "lake monsters," to begin with! HARDY HAR HAR: Yeah ... but what exactly does Scooby-Doo have that I don't? LIPPY THE LION: Common sense, Hardy! [And as the pair prepare jumping into the water--] HARDY HAR HAR, myopic as ever: I just hope I know what I'm getting into by all this ...
