The Bad Game
[Blurb: An innocent game of mini-golf takes a sinister turn when a family friend demands that Naomi make good on her bet. This deep betrayal leads to an impossible choice.]
[Author’s note: I wrote this in 2020. It’s loosely based on true events, as recounted by a friend of mine. This story is a tragic family drama. It deals with emotional abuse, manipulation, substance abuse, and other things that might trigger some readers (like most of my stories!)]
The driving lesson was over, so Naomi parked the old van and turned off the ignition.
"That was good, sweetie," Pastor Rob congratulated her from the passenger's seat, "You'll be able to get your license soon, for sure!"
Naomi shook her head and smiled sheepishly, "Maybe in a month."
They climbed out of the vehicle to stretch their legs and switch seats. Naomi hopped in and fastened her seat belt while Rob slid the driver's seat back. She giggled at some birds squabbling in the grass as he lowered his weighty girth into the van.
"How about some mini-golf?" He said, rather suddenly.
Naomi liked the game but she was tired. She'd been driving all morning and still had a pile of chores to do at home. She was also tired of being under the pastor's leering gaze. Spending the rest of the day with him -- followed by a Sunday of volunteering at his tiny church -- wasn't her idea of fun but he'd been kind enough to give her driving lessons when nobody else would. She was grateful to him, so she agreed to go.
On the way to the mini-golf park, Rob said, "How about a bet, this time?"
They'd played before but never with a wager. It seemed a little strange to Naomi, so she asked, "Like what?"
Rob kept his eyes on the road, "We'll play one round. If you win, I'll do any one thing you want and if I win, you'll do any one thing I want."
Coming from any other man, this kind of proposal would have alarmed her. But this man was like a grandfather to her. They'd known each other for years. He helped her family. He was goofy, humble, and generous. She trusted him.
She looked at him and nodded, "Yeah, okay! You'll probably just force me to go to lunch with you again or somethin', right?"
They both laughed.
They drove the rest of the way in silence with Elvis Presley crooning on the radio.

Naomi was usually pretty good at mini-golf but that day, she missed every shot. She almost felt as if an unseen force was affecting her game. Rob, on the other hand, was on a roll, banking his bright blue golf ball around plastic gnomes as if by magic and landing holes-in-one at both the lighthouse and crocodile lake. In dozens of games, she'd never seen him play so well and she'd never played so poorly.
As the game progressed, it became clear that she would lose the bet. A faint foreboding bloomed within her. She pushed it down and continued playing but by the end of the game, she'd lost by a huge margin. While they turned in their rented putters and balls, then made their way back to the van, Rob's face grew progressively pinched and dark.
Naomi sat in the front passenger's seat and fastened her seat belt. The edge seemed unusually sharp, digging into her neck as if trying to cut her. The earlier sense of foreboding bloomed again.
Rob yanked his door open, squeezed behind the wheel, mopped his sweaty forehead with one of his tree-trunk arms, and backed out of the parking space. A few feet ahead, a small gaggle of giggling women were crossing the lane. Rob, mouth gaping and eyes nearly bulging out of their sockets, moved his head to openly gawk at them in their tiny shorts and tank tops. Naomi was used to him doing that but, for some reason, she suddenly felt uncomfortable. She folded her arms across her chest and leaned against the car door. She watched his lecherous behavior out of the corner of her eye. He didn't detach his eyes from the ladies' bodies until they'd all piled into their car.

Rob pulled out onto the highway and stopped at a red traffic light. He gripped the steering wheel and stared straight ahead for a moment. A dangerous mood emanated from him.
Without looking at her, he grunted, "If I was the Mafia, you'd be in a lot of trouble right now."
Over the years, she'd seen him behave erratically. Sometimes his sermons would devolve into tales of bloody warfare, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. She knew the man had demons to fight but now it seemed he was about to use one on her. To prevent upsetting him, she didn't speak, but merely pressed herself hard against the door and looked away as the van accelerated.
He took a deep breath as if preparing to make an important announcement.
"Naomi," he said, "God showed me something last night. I was riding my bicycle like I do every night, and I looked up and saw you in the moon."
He sounded awestruck as if he'd witnessed a miracle.
"You were floating in the big full moon, wearing the most beautiful silver dress and slippers. Your hair was blowing all around you. You looked like an angel, just for me. I watched you and you smiled so sweetly, with so much love. And you reached your hands out to me and your dress blew and you were so beautiful. You stayed with me like that until I got back home."
Naomi couldn't think of anything to say. She continued looking out the window and prayed to God for safety.
When Rob parked in his driveway, Naomi had to will herself to move. She peeled herself from the door and opened it carefully. She wanted to run next door and call the police but slowly followed him into the big house, instead.
"Is your wife home?" She managed to ask as he swung the front door open.
"She's at Dorothy's piano recital at the college. They'll be gone for hours."
He led her through the cozy living room, past wholesome family pictures and walls filled with Christian crosses. Finely-crafted angel figurines looked on from shelves and tabletops as they passed. A desk in the corner housed a huge Bible, its pages edged with gold.
Rob positioned one dining chair so that it faced toward the backyard garden, then motioned for her to enter the tiny dining room and sit. She could see his wife's award-winning roses through the sliding glass door. Their yard was carpeted with soft, well-manicured grass. A set of cute lawn furniture sat on one side of the deck, overlooking a small swimming pool.
The dining chair didn't have arms, so Naomi awkwardly placed her hands in her lap. Rob suddenly stood in front of her, looming over her and blocking out the sun like a massive obelisk. To avoid his eyes, she stared at her hands.
His voice sounded above her, "I know you're a woman of God, so you'll honor your vow."
Barely a few inches in front of her, he knelt and pulled a ring box from his pants pocket. She stared at the box, praying it wasn't what she suspected. But it was. With bloated, hairy fingers, he flipped the top open to reveal a simple wedding ring. The gold-colored ring was etched with a diamond pattern to make it look like a normal ring but Naomi understood. Feeling as if she was in imminent danger, Naomi clenched her knees together tightly and thanked God she'd decided to wear jeans instead of a skirt.
He fixed his veiny bug eyes on her, "My sweetie, I've wanted to marry you since we first met when you were 14. These four years have been the happiest of my life. I know you feel the same way. God has shown me that you do."
Naomi tried rationalizing with him, "But you're already married. How will that work?"
He leaned toward her and his big belly pressed against her shins. He looked into her face like a lying boy that desperately wanted to be believed, "I've told you about that. It's basically an arranged marriage. I was 35 and our families put us together. We never loved each other."
"But it's a sin to violate your marriage vows. Besides, I don't feel that way about you, Pastor."
"But I know you do, sweetie," he nodded his head repeatedly, "God told me."
She shook her head furiously, "No!"
"It's okay, sweetie. Don't be afraid."
His fat belly pressed harder against her shins. The fleshy sensation made her feel sick, "You're old enough to be my father. Your daughter's older than me! It wouldn't work, I'm tellin' you!"
He continued, searching for ways to convince her, "And--and I know you don't want children so I got a vasectomy so you don't have to worry about that."
"Oh, God!" Naomi couldn't hold herself together anymore. Terrified, all she could do was tuck her head into her shoulder and sob.
"Sweetie--" He briefly touched her hand.
As if she'd been burned, Naomi drew her hands up to her chest.
He craned his blubbery neck to look into her face, "What's the matter, sweetie? Everything's okay. Haven't I proved that I care about you?"
He put one massive hand on her knee. Instinctively, she gasped and clenched her knees together tighter. She looked at the ceiling, gulping back sobs and biting her lip.
He placed the other hand on her lap, still holding the ring box, "Haven't I helped your family for the past four years. With your mom not working, what would you guys have done without me?"
She managed to choke out, "I appreciate everything you've done for us--" between sobs but couldn't continue.
"Oh, sweetie," His voice was tender as if speaking to a lover, "Don't cry. I know it's a big change," He waited a few moments for her to calm down but she was far too upset, "You're overwhelmed, my love. I'm sorry. I'll take you home now. Let's talk about this tomorrow after church."
Relieved to have a way out of the situation, she nodded shakily, "Tomorrow."

She'd managed to pull herself together and look somewhat normal by the time he pulled into her family's driveway. She scrambled out as soon as the van stopped.
Before she closed the door, he said, "I'll pick you up for church tomorrow, sweetie," and blew her a kiss.
She shut the door and willed her shaky legs to carry her up the cracked concrete walkway and into her family's shabby home.
She stepped into the living room in its usual state: Toys and dirty clothes littered the floor; Bowls of half-eaten cereal sat in small collections upon the tables; A sticky spill had congealed under the coffee table, next to the overturned cup that once held it.
She called to her young sisters, "Nancy, Nellie! Come clean up after yourselves, please!"
Nancy, 12, and Nellie, 5, stalked out of their room with mock annoyance. They glared at Naomi, stuck out their tongues, then collapsed into a fit of giggles.
"Cut it out, silly girls," Naomi said as she walked to the kitchen.
Their mother staggered out of the master bedroom and down the hall. She walked past Naomi without a word, opened the cabinet above the sink, and retrieved a large bottle of sleeping pills.
"Hi, Mom," Naomi said gently.
Her mother merely glanced at her, then opened the bottle. She moved almost robotically as if the effort of moving required all of her concentration and energy. She dropped three pills into her hand and swallowed them with a cold cup of coffee that was sitting on the counter.
"Are you okay, mom?" Naomi asked.
Naomi's mother turned to face her, "Never," and looked her up and down, "Look at you. You're so lucky. You don't have three mouths to feed."
Naomi stayed stone-faced and silent. Her mother said this often. The first time it happened, Naomi had made the mistake of talking back. She refused to make that mistake again.
With a surprising amount of force, her mother threw the open pill bottle against the sink's backsplash. Cloud-blue pills erupted from the bottle and fell haphazardly into the dirty dishes in the sink. A few landed in water and fizzed, creating bubbling islands of blue foam.
"I'm goin' to bed," her mother grunted.
Nellie, the youngest, peeked her head around the kitchen wall and held her toy bunny to her chin, "But Momma, you were in bed all day."
Their mother bent down and stroked Nellie's chubby face with a tenderness Naomi had not received from her in years, "Momma's tired, baby. Mommies get tired."
She stood up and snapped at Naomi, "Clean this place up!" then disappeared down the hall.
After their mother closed her door, Nancy strutted in and put a small pile of dirty cereal bowls on the kitchen table, "Where have you been all day, by the way? We've been stuck here with Mom and you've been out havin' fun!"
Naomi placed the bowls in the sink, "Believe me, nobody in this family is havin' fun."
Nancy took hold of her younger sister's hand, "Come on, Nellie, let's watch a movie while we wait for Naomi's crappy dinner."
"I like her crappy dinners," Nellie replied as they climbed onto the sofa.
"Oh, shut up, Nellie."
Overhearing the exchange from the kitchen, Naomi chuckled.
While preparing dinner, Naomi prayed for guidance. The thought of seeing Rob again made her feel sick, so she leaned over the sink for a few moments until the nausea subsided. Her mind raced with possibilities and none of them were good. If they stopped attending his church, she'd have to get a job. But she was just about to enter her last year of high school. If she quit school to work full-time, they'd probably never get out of poverty. On the other hand, if she stayed in high school and worked part-time, her sisters wouldn't have anyone to take care of them. Their mother was in no state to look after anybody and the girls were too young to take care of themselves all the time. She watched the pasta boiling on the stove. It roiled and raged like the thoughts in her head.
By the time dinner was ready, she had decided to turn him down and leave his church. She had no plan beyond that but she continued to pray and search for a solution.

Rob pulled into the driveway bright and early on Sunday morning. It was the sisters' responsibility to set up the church room in Rob's rundown beachside inn, so they had to get there before everyone else.
"Howdy-ho, kidderoos!" Rob greeted the girls as they headed towards the van.
Naomi checked to make sure the top button of her high-collar dress was done up and raised her hem slightly to keep it from dragging through the dew-covered grass. She picked up Nellie and strapped her into the front passenger's seat, then climbed into the farthest row of seats in the back.
Rob was watching in the rearview mirror, "You can sit up here with me, Naomi!"
"Nuh-uh! She said I can, Mr. Rob!" Nellie protested.
Beaming, Nancy spread her drawing books and art supplies across the middle row of seats and said proudly, "Oh, Yeah! So roomy! This must be what it's like not havin' any sisters! We should sit this way all the time."
"Well, that settles that," Naomi said as she pulled the van's sliding door shut.
He drove through the neighborhood slowly, glancing at the rearview mirror every few seconds, "Are you sure you don't want to sit up front, Naomi? Sitting next to the driver is great driving practice."
Naomi didn't take her eyes off her book, "No thank you. I promised Nellie she could sit there."
"What if you drive, instead, and I sit next to you?"
Nancy piped up, "No way. I don't wanna die today!"
All four of them burst into laughter.
Rob dropped the subject but repeatedly flicked his eyes to the rearview mirror during the 30-minute trip. Eventually, Naomi placed her backpack in her lap in an attempt to hide her chest from his searing glances.

The ramshackle inn was a place of refuge where vagabonds and penny-pinching tourists could enjoy a room on the beach for next-to-nothing. Rob did all the repairs himself but, unlike Jesus, he wasn't much of a carpenter. The floors were lumpy, sagging, and did nothing to muffle the sounds of footsteps. The paint was flaking in various places both inside and outside the building, and the bare, wooden staircases wobbled and creaked. It was a humble place for humble people.
Naomi and her sisters ascended the stairs into the common room and got to work converting the tiny space into a functioning chapel.

That Sunday's service was no different from any other. Pastor Rob led with a spirited, yet incoherent, opening message, which seemed to be nothing more than a collection of random Bible quotes from a desktop calendar. After the opening, he jumped straight into an equally spirited sermon about men and women and all the sex passages in the Bible. Although he didn't look at her, Naomi knew who he'd written that sermon for.
He spoke with fire and the attendees responded in kind, yelling "Preach!" and "Amen, brother!" at random intervals.
Two young women came out of an adjoining room and sat together on one side of the small space. They were dressed in tiny jean shorts and string bikini tops. Pastor Rob seemed unable to keep himself from glancing at them every two seconds to ogle their exposed flesh.
After the service, the pastor mingled with the attendees. None of the smiling people shaking Rob's hand were aware of Saturday's events and no one -- maybe not even the man himself -- knew what he was going to do when he got Naomi alone again. The spongy floor shook with each of Rob's massive steps as he traveled through the cheerful crowd. Naomi felt the vibrations in her core, like a war drum signaling impending doom.

Just after Noon, he pulled the van up to the girls' house. Nancy and Nellie got out and said their goodbyes.
Naomi made her way to the front passenger seat.
"We're off to do more driving lessons!" Rob explained to the younger girls.
He waited until the sisters were safely inside the house, then drove to a nearby playground. He pulled into an unpaved parking space facing the park, where some families were enjoying the mild weather and fresh air. Naomi was grateful to have other people around.
The pastor turned off the van and gripped the steering wheel so hard his pudgy knuckles turned white. They both stared silently into the park for a while.
Suddenly, without looking at her, he asked, "Are you playing with me?" and continued staring ahead, awaiting her answer.
Naomi gathered her courage and calmly replied, "No."
She looked at him. A sick red color was creeping up his neck. She had to get this over quickly, "I thought about it and I'm sorry but I don't feel that way about you. You're like a grandfather to me."
He growled a reply through clenched teeth, "How could you say that?" And looked at her from the corner of his eye, "You've been flirting with me for years."
Naomi couldn't believe he was the same man who'd been laughing it up on the beach just an hour ago, "What?!"
He unclenched his jaw but the edge in his voice remained, "We've played tag on the beach--"
"Only with my sisters!"
"We kissed in the back seat of this van."
Naomi scoffed, trying to hide her panic, "I got back there with you because you asked. I didn't know you were goin' to kiss me!"
Rob finally looked at her and erupted, "Why else would I ask you to join me in a back seat!"
She had accidentally sent him into a rage, possibly putting herself in physical danger, but she could no longer control her actions. The deep feelings of betrayal, disgust, and fear were too overwhelming.
She yelled in his face, "Why would you think I wanted to kiss you?"
Rob immediately lowered his voice -- a so-called psychological tactic he loved to use when things got heated, "You told me you were saving yourself for marriage."
Naomi yelled again, "I told you that as my pastor!"
He spoke slowly, "You also told me you felt uncomfortable about your strong sexual desires."
"I thought I could confide in you!"
He removed his hands from the steering wheel and turned his body toward her. Looking deep into her eyes, he spoke gently, "I know you're a godly woman. With me, you won't have to worry about anything. I promise I'll never hurt you. You can explore your desires with me safely. No diseases. No pregnancy. And I'll take care of you, your mom, and your sisters."
Naomi couldn't believe what she was hearing, "You're tryin' to bribe me with my family?"
"It'll be a sacred union."
"You're already married, Rob!"
"It's okay," He spoke to her as if talking to an upset child, "We'll keep it a secret. Nobody has to get hurt. God's chosen few have always been misunderstood. We both know nobody will understand our love."
She screamed at the top of her lungs, "We don't have a love! How could you? I trusted you!" She smashed her fist against the dashboard, "You and no one else! And you'd do this to me? Were you doin' this all along?"
Rob maintained a steady, soothing tone, "I didn't do anything. It's God's plan, my love."
"SHUT UP!"
Naomi's hands were shaking so badly, she barely managed to undo her seat belt. She reached for the car door handle.
Rob raised his voice slightly and scolded her, "You promised me! You're not a liar!"
Her anger spent, tears ran down Naomi's cheeks as she looked him straight in his eyes.
Her voice shook as she said, "I think Jesus will forgive me for this one."
She shoved the door open, got out, then slammed it shut with a frustrated roar. Startled people in the park, who'd heard them yelling, stared at her. Avoiding their gazes, she angrily walked away.
She'd traveled several feet before Rob finished hauling his heft out of the vehicle. He called to her, "Did you buy your sisters' school supplies yet?"
She stopped on the spot.
"Or your mom's medicine?"
She lowered her head, tears cascading down her face. Her entire body shook as she clenched and unclenched her fists. A swarm of dark possibilities swirled in her mind.
A child's scream and laughter yanked her back into reality. Instinctively, she looked in the direction of the sound. The squealing toddler was being pushed on a swing by his smiling dad. Mom looked on, laughing loudly.
Naomi stared at the happy family. Memories of carefree days floated up from the depths of her mind. She could feel Rob's eyes on her.
Without looking at him, she walked back to the van, threw herself into the seat, slammed the door, and waited. After a moment, Rob squeezed behind the steering wheel, watching her. Without a glance or a word, she pulled the musty seat belt across her body and fastened it with a heavy click. It pressed against her chest and lap, pinning her to the seat. She folded her hands in her lap in a failed attempt to keep them from shaking.
She stared at the horizon, blinking away hot tears and taking measured breaths. Aware of Rob's gaze, she pressed against the car seat and bit her lip hard. Her body shook with adrenaline and terror.
Rob continued to stare at her as he started the van. He seemed to be savoring the moment as he raked his hungry eyes up and down her body.

The pastor sat the last grocery bag on the kitchen table.
He checked to make sure nobody else was around, then pulled Naomi close for a quick kiss on the lips, "See you Saturday, my love."
He headed out the door. She bent over the sink and washed her mouth out with dish soap.
She dried her face as Nancy came around the corner.
"Was that Pastor Rob?"
Naomi nodded.
A mischievous smile crept across Nancy's face, "Gee, I'm sure glad you two didn't die in your drivin' lesson!"
Naomi was too numb to even pretend to laugh but she forced herself to smile as sweetly as she could at her silly little sister, "That was funny, Nancy."
"Duh!"
Naomi pulled an ice cream cake from one of the grocery bags, "Look what I've got."
Nellie appeared in the doorway, curious. Naomi knelt so the kids could get a better look.
Nancy gasped, "Wow! Are we celebratin' somethin'?"
Naomi forced a warm smile for her sisters, "Yes. We're celebratin' how much I love you."
Just out of sight, their mother muttered, "Bring me some o' that to my room, Nancy," then shuffled back down the hall.
"Oh, Momma likes it, too!" Nellie said, "Thanks, Naomi!"
Nancy pulled a plate from the dish rack, "Yeah, I guess you're okay, sometimes."
At that, the three of them stuck their tongues out at each other playfully.
Naomi turned and placed the ice cream cake on the kitchen table. The golden ring on her left middle finger caught Nellie's eye.
Nellie pulled Naomi's hand to her own face so she could get a better look, "That ring's fancy! I like the diamond shapes. Did it cost a lot?"
Naomi briefly flashed a smile, "Yes, it cost me a whole lot."
"I won't tell, but Momma might get mad if she finds out."
Naomi gently pulled her hand free and stroked her precious little sister's hair, "I think you're right, honey. I bet she would."

Casa Lesbiana
First is the story of a lady who dealt with many hard things. Following that is info about her daughter who was an out-and-proud lesbian in early 20th Century Utah. The gay great-aunt of Thomas Monson is part of these stories.

Sarah Ann Briggs traveled in the Martin Handcart Company with her parents and six siblings. During the ill-fated journey, 5-year-old Sarah Ann lost her father and two siblings to hunger and freezing weather.
Less than four years after arriving in Utah, Sarah Ann’s widowed mother (who had remarried as a polygamous wife) died from a scorpion bite in 1860. The orphaned 9-year-old Sarah Ann was sent to live with one of her new stepsisters, Elizabeth Clark Handley, and her husband George Handley.
In the Spring of 1866 George Handley was ordered by a high-ranking church leader to take a second wife. As both George and his wife were opposed to polygamy, he instead requested to move with his family back to Keokuk, Iowa, a Mormon settlement along the Mormon Trail.
Soon thereafter, the Handleys were visited by Mormon vigilantes at night who burned down their barn as a warning to George to remain in Zion, as well as to obey the orders of his ecclesiastical leaders by marrying a second wife. On May 19, 1866, 42-year-old George Handley was sealed in the Salt Lake Endowment House to his first wife, Elizabeth Clark (whom he had civilly married in 1846), and then was polygamously sealed to her stepsister, the 14-year-old Sarah Ann Briggs.
Within a week after their marriage, young Sarah Ann had already conceived her first child.
47-year-old George Handley died in 1874 from a stroke. Thus, at the age of 22, Sarah Ann Briggs Handley found herself a widow with four small children to support and raise on her own
Embittered by her whole experience with Mormonism (the arduous journey to America, the grueling and tragic trek, the horrible deaths of her parents, her forced polygamous marriage, and giving birth to children when she herself was still just a child), she abandoned Mormonism and joined the Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City.
Handley family tradition says that, sometime between 1880 and 1882, Church leaders insisted that Elizabeth Clark Handley take away and raise Sarah Ann’s children so that they would remain in the Mormon faith. When Sarah Ann married Episcopal dentist Arvis S. Chapman in 1883, her young children were no longer residing with her.
Sarah Ann and Arvis Chapman had 2 children, a son who died young and a daughter named Mary Edith Chapman. Arvis died in 1919.
The 1920 census showed that 61-year-old Caroline Monson, who went by Carline, was the live-in “servant” of 69-year-old Sarah Ann. Carline is the great aunt of Thomas Monson, who became Church president. Carline never married and is believed to have been a lesbian.
Sarah Ann died in 1923.

Edith Chapman, daughter of Sarah Ann, was an instructor at the University of Utah and inherited her parent’s home at 615 E. 900 South [now Harvey Milk Blvd.], just north of Liberty Park (the Chapman Branch of the Salt Lake Public Library system was named for her aunt Ann Chapman, who was rumored to be a lesbian).
Edith opened her home to other professional, lesbian boarders beginning in 1923. Grace Nickerson, an instructor at the LDS School of Music (in the McCune Mansion) was the first boarder in Edith’s house.
In 1924, 39-year-old Edith met and fell in love with 23-year-old Mildred “Barrie�� Berryman. Mildred was a pioneering sexologist who was studying a Lesbians and Gay men in Salt Lake. Edith was one of Mildred’s subjects. While their relationship only lasted a brief time, Mildred lived with Edith for four years in the lesbian boarding house.
Carline Monson also lived in the house. Edith, busy with her education career, had Carline run the boarding house.
In 1925, Grace Nickerson moved out of the house, and 25-year-old Dorothy Graham replaced her. Dorothy was a lesbian and the manager of the Coon Chicken Inn in Salt Lake (a well-known restaurant owned by her family, which featured male drag performers).
The friends of Dorothy, Carline, Edith and Mildred nicknamed the house “Casa Lesbiana.”
Mildred moved out in 1929.
By 1931, Edith had grown tired of her limited romantic options in Salt Lake. While there were several bars in Salt Lake at the time (mostly on upper State Street) where Gay men could frequent, the Lesbian community resorted to home parties and making “pilgrimages” to San Francisco. Edith had joined some of these excursions to the Bay Area in the 1920s and fell in love with the social climate there.
Edith closed the boarding house, signed over ownership of her home to Carline Monson in 1931, and moved to Berkeley, California, where she continued teaching until her death in 1967. Her obituary referred to herself as “the loving friend of Miss Dorothy J. Wobbs.”

Road Trip: Eastward Day 4: Rocks, Rushmore, Badlands, Dignity, and more
This summer, the kids and I embarked on a 10,000-mile cross-country road trip from Washington to Maine and back. Along the way, we got a brief taste of America through landmarks and sights that represent our nation, for better or worse.

Ken's Minerals & Trading Post, Custer, South Dakota
If you collect rock specimens, shops like Ken’s are irresistible. We hadn’t planned on stopping here, but the massive piles of rose quartz outside caught our attention, especially at a dollar a pound. Inside was a huge variety of specimens, fossils, and locally-made jewelry.
For example, here are a couple of selenite specimens we bought: first, as a sheet; second, as desert roses.
An older man was staffing the counter, knowledgeable about the rocks in the store and around the area. I asked if he was Ken. He chuckled. “No,” he said. “Ken has been gone for a long time. His sons run the store now. I just work here.” And he told us the store’s origin story.
Back in 1926, Ken and his wife were in facing some tough times financially, so the wife set up a little stand at their house to sell vegetables. With all the natural attractions in the area, a number of tourists stopped by. But instead of buying vegetables, the tourists wanted to buy the rocks that the couple had for lawn decor. So Ken and his wife followed the money: instead of selling vegetables, they sold rocks. And thus Ken’s Minerals & Trading Post was born.
We probably bought too many rocks. But, it’s a really nice rock shop.

Mount Rushmore, Keystone, South Dakota
Mount Rushmore is pretty straightforward: the faces of four major American presidents carved into the side of a mountain. Despite their grand 60-foot-tall visages, they kind of look bored instead of thoughtful.
The four presidents were chosen by the artist, Gutzon Borglum, to represent four stages of American history: George Washington for the birth of America; Thomas Jefferson for its growth; Theodore Roosevelt for its development; and Abraham Lincoln for the preservation of the country. Sculpting began in 1927 and was completed in 1941.
Allegedly, Mount Rushmore was named after a lawyer for a mining company, Charles Edward Rushmore, who spent time in the area with mining prospectors. He asked the prospectors the name of the mountain, and they said it had no name, so they named it after him. Here is how it looked in the late 1800s:

It’s an interesting memorial, but it’s hard to imagine going often.

Wall Drug, Wall, South Dakota
This is one of those self-made landmarks: a huge, sprawling maze of rooms to buy all kinds of souvenirs and other stuff. It’s like a strangely-designed mall, except all the stores are owned by Wall Drug. You can also eat there. And you know this before arriving because Wall Drug has a zillion billboards along the highway for hundreds of miles in advance, advertising water and coffee and food and whatnots. They’ll probably be the first landmark to have billboards in space, if they don’t already.
Wall Drug started in 1931 by Ted Hustead, a Catholic pharmacist who wanted to work in a town where he could attend mass. As Hustead described it, business was terrible for the first few years, but then his wife Dorothy had the bright idea to offer free ice water to tourists driving past Wall on their way to other tourist sites. Immediately their business saw an upswing.
Today the ice water is still free and the coffee is still 5¢. Still, we didn’t buy anything, or eat anything, or drink anything — we were already well hydrated. But we did wander around boggling at all the trinkets until we found bathrooms. I doubt anyone sells a shirt that says, “I went to Wall Drug and all I did was pee.”

Badlands National Park, South Dakota
Not far from Wall is the entrance to the Badlands National Park: nearly 250,000 acres of remarkably striking landscapes and natural beauty. We didn’t have much time, but we did drive the 30-mile Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240) to see the northern part of the park.
“I really wonder what the first humans thought when they saw this,” wondered Luke, age 14, in amazement.
“It’s almost like some kind of ancient war zone,” I said, “if the ancients had nuclear weapons.”
“If I didn’t know about modern science and religion,” agreed Luke, “I might wonder if the gods had a battle here.”
“Who won?” I asked. “Who lost?”

Prairie Homestead, Philip, South Dakota
You can’t exit northeast out of the Badlands without passing by the Prairie Homestead. It is a century-old relic of a pioneer family from 1909. Dug into the side of a hill and supported with a wood frame, the house’s walls are dirt bricks and its roof is covered in thick sod.
“Can you imagine trekking out here from the East Coast, digging a house out of the ground, and living in it all alone for a long time?” I asked as we stood inside the sod house, looking at the old walls papered with old newsprint.
Beth, age 11, shook her head. “It’s amazing the human race has survived.”
I thought the admission price was steep, but it is a unique artifact of history. Unusually, there are white prarie dogs everywhere.

Dignity Statue, Chamberlain, South Dakota
At 50 feet tall, this statue of a peaceful, thoughtful Native American woman is impressive, especially since you can walk right up to it and sit at its feet (or on its feet, if you choose; they're big enough).
The artist, Dale Lamphere, said,
“Dignity represents the courage, perseverance and wisdom of the Lakota and Dakota culture in South Dakota. My hope is that the sculpture might serve as a symbol of respect and promise for the future.”
Dignity can be found at the highway rest area in Chamberlain, South Dakota — a sentence that would not make sense in any other context. But she really is striking. The reflective blue tiles in her shawl turn and twinkle in the wind. I’ve read that there are lights on the tiles at night, but we were there during a sunny day.

World’s Only Corn Palace, Mitchell, South Dakota
Before the trip, I was amazed at the number of people who insisted we had to visit the World’s Only Corn Palace.
Dating back to 1892, the Corn Palace features enormous, mostly monochromatic brownish murals made entirely of corn cobs, using a dozen different varieties of corn to achieve variation in tone and color. They slice the cobs in half lengthwise, then nail them to the wall, updating the murals annually based on designs by local artists. They claim that it “is known around the world as a folk-art wonder on the prairie of South Dakota.”
There are several murals on the exterior of the building. The building is also a civic center with a large auditorium and a basketball court, so there are plenty more murals around the perimeter of the staging area inside. Apparently, USA Today named the Corn Palace one of the top 10 places in America for high school basketball, a factoid which baller Luke, age 14, has trouble believing. "This is just weird," he remarked, but he still tried on a corn cob hat for sale.
On the day we arrived, it appeared the front murals were in the process of being taken down. And with no impending events, the basketball court was turned into a souvenir shop.

Spirit Lake, Iowa
We drove out of the east side of South Dakota and briefly into Minnesota, then dipped south across the state line to Iowa for the night.
I’ll be honest: this stop was primarily a convenient way to check another state off the list. We did not see any actual sights there. Sorry, Iowa.

Bastion falls
Trails to the viewing platform are both wide and flat, and there are signs pointing the way to go. Nevertheless, it also should mean you shouldn’t have any issues finding parking except at the busiest times.įrom the parking area, it’s an easy 0.3 miles to the upper viewing platform. This parking area is much larger than the ones at the lower access areas and makes it obvious just how popular this spot is. The top parking lot is located near Haines Falls, New York, at the end of Laurel House Road (off of North Lake Road). The trails to the upper viewing area are more of a walk than a hike. But, more on that later because you definitely want to do this hike from the top. The only disadvantage to parking at the top is that you miss Bastion Falls, an impressive waterfall that can be seen from Route 23A. Not only is this upper area safer, but it also makes the falls accessible to almost anyone and makes it easier for those wanting to explore the base of the waterfall as well. The top parking area was completed in 2016 and allows you to skip a very sketchy road walk that was once required to visit Kaaterskill Falls. It also provides an overlook that can be reached by almost everyone and is listed as being handicapped accessible. The falls can be accessed from both above and below, and while I’ll explain directions for both, I highly recommend starting at the top as this is both safer and easier. Artist Thomas Cole painted many scenes of Kaaterskill Falls. In fact, some of the most well-known paintings from Hudson River School artists such as Thomas Cole made this waterfall a central point in many of their paintings. Kaaterskill Falls is one of the country’s oldest tourist attractions and has been depicted in many paintings, poems, and books since the 1800s. The lower drop is a still-impressive 85 feet. The upper drop is the larger of two at 175 feet, just a few feet shorter than the impressive Taughannock Falls in the Finger Lakes. Kaaterskill Falls is 260 feet in height, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in New York. There many incredibly impressive waterfalls in New York, but few can compare with the beauty and grandeur of Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills. Aug 6 AM – Aug 7 AM
We broke Camp early and headed over to the glass bottom boat tour to wrecks in Lake Superior, actually the Bay of Munising the cruise was interesting, if not exciting. We saw to ship wrecks, one an ore hauler that got stranded on a shallow shelf and a salt ship carrying table salt. The ore ship was hauled out of the shipping lanes and scuttled. Several years later a Canadian company salvages the ore which was worth millions. The salt ship had been taking on water so the captain put in to harbor for repairs the next morning. When he and the first mate got up, the ship was gone. They found it in ab0ut 60’ feet of water. It had floated away from the dock and when it sank so fast, it blew the main cabin right off the deck. That’s why they didn’t see where the ship had sunk right away. Three crew men died, but they did recover the bodies. We met Jim, retired combat engineer in the Marines and Dorothy a pediatric urologist nurse who are traveling with their two grandsons for a short trip out of Lansing. Dorothy is also a flute player so she and Elizabeth had something to talk about. Jim works for Black & Veatch, a huge Consulting Engineer firm, as a project engineer overseeing water and wastewater treatment plant construction and repairs. Talk about coincidences, that's what I did when I got out of college. I didn't get to go into the combat engineers when I was drafted because I was too blind. We saw some interesting sites other than the wreck of two ships, which included a nesting bald eagle, some old summer homes on Grand Island and more rock formations. Jim and Dorothy told us about some other sites that were must do's. One was a spring about an hour south of us in a state park that created a 45 foot deep, 45 degree temperature pool for the last hundred years or so. It was very interesting they had 3 foot 20 lb + Lake Trout floating around in the pool. They bring the fish into appeal to the tourist. The trout are 12 to 14 years old and past the reproducing age so they are brought in from the fish hatchery nearby to live out the rest of their lives. They also told us about a place we're going to see in a week or so at the end of the tunnel of trees Road called the Legs Inn. It has one of the largest Bloody Mary’s in the land. Ironically, when we were in the Line to see the springs, a couple in line us and another group told us we should see the same things. They also told us some of the roads we will be driving on after the reunion to get home are very busy touristy areas. We might go back inland instead of taking the scenic route. We found a nice inexpensive campground run by Pat and her daughter Loretta. Pat’s a feisty 77 year old who was out mowing her grass after 7:30. The office is in a 110 year old barn that has logs for the ground floor, cut my two young men, allegedly, and then stacked up with cement around them. I don't think the ceilings are over 7 feet tall. A couple from Chicago who now live in Wisconsin walked by and we talked to Bill and Regina for about an hour. He spent 6 years in the Marine Corps from 1980 to 1986 and is now a firefighter paramedic. After 911, the Marine Corps called him back to active duty even though he was not in the active Reserves. It was a voluntary return for him and he almost has enough points to get his retirement. He had some interesting stories and Regina is a retired software engineer and trainer. They now live in their motor home most of the time. They also had a Mercedes Sprinter and he had some very good fixes for the instability of the vehicle rocking back and forth on bumpy roads and to improve the comfort. Both things I can do myself, if I choose to after buying the parts online. The pictures you see below I think will be interesting and we hope you're still enjoying the blog. It is early morning August 7th as I write this. Later, we continue onward toward the Keweenaw peninsula and our trip to the Isle Royale National Park.

Okay. Let's look at Max and Chloe post-Storm.
First, they only have the clothes on their backs. Chloe's home is probably shambles at best. The glimpse we get of Arcadia Bay in LiS2 in a Save Chloe setting is that there are very few buildings left standing. (Yes, we saw a number of damaged buildings that Chloe and Max drive by, but those were likely the outskirts of town and most of the town took a direct hit.)
Similarly, Blackwell likely took a direct hit. While tornadoes do weaken over time, this one had enough strength to do a lot of damage, to the point that Victoria seems to imply she was lucky to be alive because she was in the bunker with David (and Jeffershit and a couple cops) (and also the bunker was on the edge of town). So the Prescott Dorm is probably also FUBAR.
So where do Max and Chloe go? Well, there's her uncle Aaron and Great Aunt Dorothy. But in the William Lives timeline, Aaron is being sent to Salt Lake City for a parking lot (probably a construction job). I honestly don't see things being much different in the prime timeline. And we don't know where Aunt Dorothy lives, except that she has a lot of medical bills.
In all likelihood, Max and Chloe will go to Seattle. Vanessa likely would lend Chloe some clothes until they could get her some more clothes from second-hand shops (as was seen with Max's own wardrobe and mentioning in her journal she'd get second-hand clothes frequently).
Seeing that Chloe would not want to alienate Max's parents and make things rougher for Max, she probably went for more sedate clothing - likely black, but maybe also some stuff that would work for getting a part-time job.
This also depends on if Max and Chloe took the cash from the Blackwell Fake Construction project to install wheelchair ramps on the dorms which can only be reached by going up a flight of stairs and then down another flight of stairs. If Max and Chloe managed to keep all $5,000 of it, then Chloe honestly can get some really nice clothes for herself and Max. Even $2,000 would still be useful and help out the Caulfields (who are not wealthy no matter how much certain folk like to assume they are).
Chloe probably didn't bother getting fresh hair dye. There's more important things to worry about. However, when Max eventually talks Chloe into contacting David again (and we know Max would have done this) and they decide to visit, Chloe tries to bleach her hair. This is a disaster. Blue bleaches into a pale green. She also takes a Sharpie to her arm to "blacken" her tattoo in an attempt to keep from pissing off David. It works. David and Chloe bury the hatchet. Who knows, David may very well apologize for being an abusive piece of shit to her and Chloe may decide "Mom really wanted us to be a family and she's not here anymore so I'll do this. For Mom." And she calls once a week and miracle of miracles, David actually is bettering himself and doesn't act like a prick.
The moment they're out of the state and headed to New York, Chloe dyes her hair blue again. David doesn't need know. ;) But she probably continued to dress similar to how we saw her in LiS2, both for working retail and because she's trying hard to make ends meet for Max.
How Max and Chloe would dress after the storm?
I always pictured Max as not giving a shit about what she wears, which is sorta supported by canon as Chloe comments she doesn’t have a style. Max dresses how she dresses for a few reasons:
She is broke from spending her money on film so she doesn’t buy new clothes much
She doesn’t really get the point. She’s aware enough to know that clothes change how people see you but she doesn’t really get it. Like yes she understands that Victoria dresses very nice to show off but she lacks any other insights.
These end up how shes dressed in LiS. Rather plain and all things that can be mixed and matched. She just kinda throws stuff on at random but it doesn’t matter because it all the same.
Post Storm I think would be pretty similar? I don’t see her expanding her wardrobe much on purpose. No matter how daring/brave she is post canon I still don’t think she’d care enough to really go out and buy a wardrobe. A daring out fit- possibly? Even then the thought of Max in like a… low cut dress or something makes my brain go ‘ooc alert’. She might be more willing to dress kinda dapper for events though.
The only real difference is that Max is a total clothing thief and she steals Chloe’s shit all the time. Mostly t-shirts. Everything else will be classic Max but her t-shirt is too big because she stole it. She steals jackets too.
Chloe, however, I see changing a little more. I always thought that she very much decided to be as puck as possible. Like yes, the Puck Look is a expression of herself but she pushed it just a little farther because of David and Joyce.
So post storm and with no David and Joyce around she ends up losing a bit of that edge. I picture her kinda between LiS Chloe and BtS Chloe. A lot of jeans, some skinny and some baggy and all with holes, and a lot of t-shirt. She probably has like five t-shirts that she ripped up and tied back together. T shirts with the arms or collar ripped out. Big boots or tennis shoes that have seen better days.
She keeps the hair though. I refuse to believe she stops dying it for a while. Like mid twenties at least because Max likes it so much.

Faery Hole
Located in Jenny Jump State Park, near the shores of Ghost Lake on Shades of Death Road, is a small cave known as the Faery Hole (faery is an Old English spelling for fairy). Evidence of Indian occupation, including a few pieces of pottery and evidence of a fire pit near the opening, has been found there. From the parking lot, follow the rocky trail along the lake’s edge about two hundred yards, then turn to the right and climb up a steep rocky slope to the cave.
The cave is about ten feet wide and fifteen feet deep, and the ceiling is high enough for a person to stand up. There is a natural chimney in the rear of the cave that sometimes contains blind cave crickets.
When the Faery Hole was excavated in 1936 by archaeologist Dr. Dorothy Cross of the New Jersey State Museum, more than ten thousand bone fragments from twenty-three different species of animals were recovered. Among them was the tooth of a giant extinct beaver that has been found nowhere else in the state.

List of the 7 Best Hikes Near Seattle
Skyscraper Pass
This is one of the best hikes near Seattle on a very clear day. Although this trail ends with a fairly easy boulder scramble, the views from the rocky summit are worth the effort. From the top look to the South. You can follow the tiers of Burroughs Mountain left to right, up to where the Inter Glacier and Steamboat Prow point to the summit of Rainier. Continuing clockwise, see the green meadows of aptly named Vernal Park, Winthrop Creek and the West Fork White River far below, the immense plateau of Grand Park, the Fremont Lookout, and finally Berkeley Park, below to the southeast.
Details: This trail is about 8 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain 1300 ft. To get there, drive to Mount Rainier National Park’s northeast (White River) entrance, 40 miles east and south of Enumclaw on State Route 410, or 3 miles north of Cayuse Pass on State Route 410. Follow the road to its end at Sunrise.
Mailbox Peak
Bridges and creek crossings await you in the lower section of the hike, and then the switchbacks start. At roughly 850ft of elevation gain per mile, your thighs will feel the burn once you start climbing, and it won't let up until you're standing triumphantly next to the Mailbox. Distract yourself by taking a look at the construction of the trail. A multitude of volunteer crews worked to create rock fords and turnpikes (elevated sections of trail) that keep your feet dry as you cross many creeks. The switchbacks continue for about 4 miles, before rejoining the old trail at elevation 3860 feet for your final push to the summit. This last push consists of 960 feet of elevation gain in half a mile--hopefully the approach warmed you up for the final assault! If your energy flags, remember what views await you at the summit. The peak's position at the end of a long ridgeline means you'll have an even better vantage point for panoramas than you might on other summits like Granite or Bandera. Rainier is in your face, and to the northwest, the Middle Fork Valley stretches before you like a lush green carpet.
Details: This trail is 9.4 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 4000 ft. To get there, take exit 34 from I-90. Head north on 468th Ave SE for approximately half a mile until the intersection with the SE Middle Fork Road. Turn right onto the Middle Fork Road. Follow SE Middle Fork Road 2.2 miles to the stop sign at the junction with SE Dorothy Lake Road. Head left onto SE Middle Fork Road and drive .3 miles. Take the turnoff to the trailhead on the right and continue a short distance up the paved road to the paved parking lot with 40 spots and a vault toilet.
Bandera Mountain
Bandera Mountain is a chameleon. Most would describe it as an easy hike--relatively short and not very steep for most of its length–-but then it suddenly changes, turning informal and rough, particularly in its last half mile, making it feel like the rugged backcountry trek it at times can be.
Details: This trail is 8 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 3400 ft. To get there, take exit 45 off of I-90 and turn north onto FR 9030. A little over three quarters of a mile from the exit, stay left onto FR 9031. Follow it to its end and the trailhead for the Ira Spring Trail #1038. Road is one-lane gravel and dirt.
Mount Pilchuck
Despite its intermediate difficulty, Mount Pilchuck sees a slew of visitors in a given year. Hikers flock to the trail for its grand panoramic views and historic restored fire lookout. Easily one of the most rewarding hikes near Seattle, its a relatively short 2.7 mile, 2,300 feet ascent which gifts you 360-degree views of Mount Baker, Mount Rainier and the Olympics from its shelter lookout. The lookout sits nestled on a summit that tops out around 5,300 feet. Definitely one of the more popular hikes near Seattle. The lookout is the perfect picnic spot.
Details: Approaching Granite Falls on Hwy 92, you will encounter a roundabout. Take the second exit and get onto Quarry Road. Take Quarry Road 2 miles. You will pass through another roundabout, but stay on Quarry Road. After 2 miles, reach the Mountain Loop Highway. Take a left onto the highway and proceed 10 miles to the Verlot Visitors Center. Continue another mile past the visitor's center and then cross a bridge. After that you take the next right onto paved Mount Pilchuck Road. Once you've made the right-turn, look for a sign indicating the road is FR 42. Proceed 6.8 miles down this road and you will reach the parking lot, which is just off the trailhead and bathroom for Mount Pilchuck.
Hidden Lake Lookout
It offers an intimate view of the very heart of the North Cascades. The kind of immersive experience not available by gazing up from the valleys below. From wildflower meadows in its early stretches to stark granite at the top, it is a front row seat for all that draws us upward. The view you get from here makes you feel so far away from civilization and it is such a good feeling. Another one of my favorites hikes near Seattle.
Details: This trail is 8 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 3300 ft. To get there you Drive from Marblemount on Hwy 20, drive the Cascade River Road just short of 10 miles to the junction with FS 1540. The road will be signed for the Hidden Lake Trail. Drive the steep, rutted, rocky road 4.5 miles to the road end and trailhead. Be sure to leave room for other people to drive in and out of the trailhead area.
The Enchantments
In the Enchantments, nature has carved one of the magnificent places of this world. An alpine paradise of granite worn smooth by glaciers, larches manicured by wind and cold, and crystal blue lakes strung together by a creek that tumbles and thunders between them. Seemingly everywhere, herds of mountain goats calmly wander by. Superlatives simply don’t suffice. You quickly find yourself resorting to otherworldly comparisons, just like the early visitors who bestowed place names like Aasgard, Sprite and Leprechaun on the fairytale surroundings. There are three ways to experience the Enchantments, none easy. Add this to your adventures if you have completed some of the easier hikes near Seattle. The absolute minimum price of admission here is a hike of not less than seven miles gaining at least 4,400 feet in elevation in order to make it to even just one of the lakes in the Upper Enchantments. If you're lucky enough to get an overnight permit, you can backpack at your leisure via the Snow Lakes or Stuart Lake trailheads. If you’re a very strong hiker, you can make it in and out via either trailhead in a single day. Although seeing all of the lakes this way is so grueling it borders on the impossible. With two cars (or a car and some bikes), you can hike point-to-point from one trailhead to the other and transit between the two. The thru-hike is typically done from the Stuart Lake trailhead. It reduces the total elevation gain by 2,600 feet relative to going the opposite direction (although it still takes in the punishing climb up Aasgard Pass, which rises 1,900 feet in less than a mile). Pick your poison; enjoy the rewards.
Details: This hike is 18 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 4500 ft. To get there you turn onto Icicle Creek Road from US2 on the very western edge of Leavenworth. Drive 8.4 miles and turn left onto Forest Service Road 7601. Follow the bumpy, sometimes potholed dirt road 3.7 miles to the Stuart Lake trailhead. Parking for about 20-30 cars and a toilet are available in the lot. Northwest Forest Pass required. Note that FR 7601 from Icicle Creek Road to the trailhead closes during the winter, typically from November to May, making for a short summer hiking season.
Heather - Maple Pass Loop
If ever there was a hike to satisfy all a hiker's desires, this one comes as close as any. A loop hike with many fabulous changing faces throughout the seasons. Heather-Maple Pass features ridgelines blanketed in wildflowers in summer, lakes ringed with golden larches in fall, and before the highway closes for the season, a dramatic place to experience early winter’s snows. Details: This hike is 7.2 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 2000 ft. To get there, from Seattle, drive Hwy 20 through the town of Marblemount and on towards North Cascades National Park. After approximately 50 miles, the Rainy Pass trailhead will be on the south (right) side of the road. There is room here for 40 cars, as well as a privy. There is also a parking area on the north side of the road here which provides access to other trails.
Rattlesnake Ledge
This very popular trail is a breeze to get to. Rattlesnake Ridge Ledge has one of the most epic viewpoints and one of the most picturesque hikes near Seattle. Sweeping views of the Cedar River watershed, Mount Si, Mount Washington, Rattlesnake Lake and Chester Morse Lake. The ledge is a very exposed and large rock that has sheer cliffs. It would be wise approach slowly if you are hiking with kids or dogs. If you wish to extend your trip. You can go back to the junction where the sign points out the trail to East Peak 2.4 miles away, or the ridge traverse to Snoqualmie Park, 8.3 miles away. You can also go just a short way from the junction up to Middle and Upper Ledge. This area is usually much quieter and afford more sweeping views to the northwest, where you can look down on the crowds at Rattlesnake Ledge.
Details: This hike is 4 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 1160 ft. To get there from Seattle, drive east on I-90 to exit 32 for 436th Avenue SE. Turn right onto 436th Avenue SE, also signed as Cedar Falls Road SE. Proceed about four miles down the road to the Rattlesnake Lake parking lot on the right. People aren’t supposed to just disappear . . .but 28 years later the mystery of what happened to Sherrill Elizabeth Levitt, Stacy Kathleen McCall, and Suzanne E. Streeter remains a mystery.

Stacy McCall, 18, Suzanne "Suzie" Streeter, 19, were happy new graduates of Kickapoo High School.Having just graduated on June 6, 1992, Stacy was supposed to be spending the night at Suzie's home at 717 E. Delmar Street.
June 6, 1992, around 8:30 p.m. Stacy had told her mother, Janis McCall, she wanted to go to a party and then head to Branson later that night. Stacy knew her parents were worried about them driving to Branson late at night, so just two hours later, Stacy called to say they weren't going to Branson that night after all. The girls had decided to play it safe, and said she would be staying the night at her friend's house and she would call her mother in the morning. The next morning they’d go to the water park.
Initially, Streeter and McCall planned to stay over at the home of a mutual friend, Janelle Kirby. But when they got there, they discovered that the house was full of people. And in the early hours of the morning, they decided to sleep at Levitt’s home, where both girls would spend the night on Streeter's new waterbed.The girls loaded up and went to another party at friend Michelle Elder's house, but the party on East Hanover street got a little loud, and a neighbor called police. An officer showed up about 1:40 a.m., shooing partiers away.Suzie and Stacy went to their cars parked at Janelle's. Her mom, Kathy Kirby, had a pallet laid out on her living room floor for Suzie and Stacy. Janelle would sleep on the couch because family members from out of town were sleeping in her bedroom.Suzie and Stacy decided they would be more comfortable sleeping on Suzie's new waterbed, and told Janelle they'd see her in the morning.
Kathy Kirby woke up when her daughter came in the front door. She heard the girls outside.
"Follow me to my house," Suzie told her friend.
"OK," Stacy answered. "I will". . .Stacy never did call her mom.Sherrill was last heard from earlier that night around 11:15 p.m. when she talked with a friend about painting a chest of drawers.
Stacy McCall and Suzanne Streeter reportedly left the graduation party in Battlefield together a little after 2 a.m. The girls drove their separate vehicles to the central Springfield home of Streeter's mother, Sherrill Levitt. That's the last known place the three missing women were believed to have been.
June 7, 1992 friends Janelle Kirby and Mike Hensen, called the home around 8 a.m., there was no answer. Hopping out of her car barefoot, the first thing Janelle noticed was broken glass shimmering on the front steps.
The porch globe was busted, yet the yellow bulb burned bright under the midday sun and no one seemed to be home. Janelle's boyfriend Mike grabbed a broom, swept up the glass and dumped it in the garbage.They later reported that the door was unlocked and all three of the women’s cars were parked out front. Levitt's blue Corsica was parked in the carport. Streeter's red Ford Escort sat in the circle drive with McCall's Toyota Corolla right behind. All of their purses and keys were inside the small white home. The three purses were piled together at the foot of the steps leading into Suzie's bedroom. The purses appeared to be lined up with items were rolling out of them, and Suzie's bed covers were pulled back. First there was Sherrill’s purse, then Suzie’s and Stacy’s was next, sitting on top of Suzie’s overnight bag. Sherrill and Streeter were known to be heavy smokers and their cigarettes were left behind. An undisturbed graduation cake was waiting in the refrigerator.Something happened inside the home between 2:30 a.m. - when police speculate the girls arrived at the Streeter home - and 8 a.m., when a friend of the girls, Janelle Kirby, called to determine what time they would meet to go to the Whitewater theme park in Branson.Something that left Cinnamon the family’s Yorkie distraught. They said they listened to the answering machine to see if there were any messages for them, but instead Janelle and Mike say they received two obscene calls. They left without making a police report and instead went to a friend's house, wondering if Suzie and Stacy had gone there before meeting for the trip to Branson. But their friend Shane hadn't seen the girls. In fact, he was still in bed.
Janelle and Mike returned to 1717 E. Delmar St. one more time. Nothing.
It suddenly occurred to them that the women might have walked to a neighborhood sub shop for lunch, so they hurried over there but again found nothing.Nearly a dozen people came through the home before police were alerted to the scene 10 hours later, including Janis who came to look for her daughter after never receiving a call.It appeared the two girls had made it to the home that night and had gotten ready for bed, as evidenced by the makeup-smeared washcloths in the hamper. Jewelry was left on the wash basin. Inside Suzie’s room — where the TV was left on — Stacy’s flowered shorts were folded and put on top of her sandals. Stacy’s jewelry had been tucked inside the pocket of her shorts. Police believe she left the home wearing only a T-shirt and panties.Levitt’s room, too, showed signs of an unexpected interruption – including a book placed page-down as if to keep its place. Apparently, her bed looked like it had been slept in and her glasses sat abandoned beside it. All of the family’s belongings including cash, in fact, appeared untouched.
How the women left is what baffles police, family and friends.
Many have theorized that this crime was the work of more than one person, while authorities say a single man could have used a ruse - something as simple as posing as a utility worker warning of a bogus gas leak in the neighborhood - to lure them out.However on the evening of June 7, Janis knew whatever it was, something was terribly wrong, and she called the police.In the first days, information surfaced about an old Dodge van, a 1964-1970 Dodge panel van, light moss green in color with a white front grill - but investigators still aren’t sure if the van was actually a true clue or a distraction that was never part of the case.
Within a week, divers from the fire department had scoured Lake Springfield, police officers on horseback had searched fields, and more than 20,000 flyers had been distributed across the area.
The FBI was called. The faces of Springfield's three missing women were broadcast on the television show "America's Most Wanted."

Still it turned into one of our states most well-known cold cases.Over the years that have followed many have criticized Terry Knowles, who was the Springfield police chief when the women disappeared, on the grounds he ran the investigation out of his office rather than allowing his detectives to do their jobs.Janis McCall said law enforcement officials didn't always work well together. She recalls weekly conferences on Wednesday afternoons where representatives from Springfield police, the Greene County Sheriff's Office, the highway patrol and more would sit around a table and they didn't check their egos at the door.In fact, early in the investigation the Missouri State Highway Patrol volunteered to bring a "whole truckload of computers" down to help with the investigation, but the Springfield Police Department declined.She said she still believes the organizations haven't shared all their information about the three missing women with each other.Springfield police Sgt. Todd King says that a lot of information was shared in the case's early days. However, at some point, he said, telling the public everything "to a point can hinder an investigation, because when we do look at a potential person of interest or something of that nature, they have just as much information as everyone else on the street." making it more difficult to judge whether or not they're being honest.
Those who followed the case in the 1990s will remember the name Robert Craig Cox, a highly regarded Army Ranger who previously won soldier of the year who was also a convicted kidnapper, robber, and murderer known to be in Springfield when the women went missing. He had worked with Stacy's father at a local car dealership, and in the summer of 1992 he worked as a locator at SM and P Conduit Inc., a Springfield company that locates and marks underground utilities. Cox lied about his alibi on the morning of June 7, 1992, and later proceeded to tell the authorities the three were dead and he knew where they were buried.
His status hasn't changed in recent years. He remains a person of interest.
Cox was convicted of killing a 19-year-old Florida woman, Dorothy Zellers, who was somehow intercepted while driving home from work at the Walt Disney World Frontierland Trading Post gift shop one night in 1978 and was sentenced to death in that case. Although blood, hair and shoe print evidence was consistent with Cox, the conviction was later overturned. Cox was released and moved from Florida to Springfield to live with his parents.
A composite sketch of an unidentified transient man was released in the days after the disappearances. The individual was allegedly spotted near Sherrill and Suzanne's residence in early June 1992. Authorities do not know if the man was involved in the case. Sherrill's son and Suzanne's older brother, Bartt Streeter, and one of Suzanne's former boyfriends were ruled out as suspects in the case early in the investigation.Another well known theory is that the women are buried underneath a south Springfield parking garage owned by CoxHealth, however police have declined to dig there on the grounds that it is cost prohibitive and they say construction of the parking garage began in September 1993 — some 15 months after the women went missing.
Digging up the area and subsequently reconstructing this structure would be extremely costly, and without any reasonable belief that the bodies could be located here, it is illogical to do so, and for those reasons SPD does not intend to. Sherrill was employed at New Attitudes Hair Salon on West Sunshine Street in Springfield in 1992. She had 250 clients at the time of her disappearance and was considered a model employee. Her family members describe her as a private person who had a close relationship with Streeter in 1992.
Sherrill Levitt and Suzanne Streeter moved into their home on East Delmar Street in April 1992, two months before their disappearances. Sherrill's 1989 divorce from her second husband, Don Levitt, impacted her finances and she elected to relocate to the smaller residence with her daughter. Don's creditors began asking Sherrill to pay his debts after their divorce. She hired an attorney to locate him without success.
Suzanne was employed at a local movie theater in 1992. She planned to enroll in cosmetology school in the fall of that year. Suzanne had difficulty reading and was placed in classes for students with learning disabilities. A friend speculated that Suzanne may have been dyslexic. She never lived with her father and rarely spoke about him or her stepfather.
Stacy McCall planned to attend Southwest Missouri State University in the fall of 1992. She was employed as a secretary/receptionist at Springfield Gymnastics at the time of her disappearance, and also modeled wedding gowns for The Total Bride in the Brentwood Center. Her family members describe her as conscientious about her appearance. She dated occasionally, but Stacy did not have a boyfriend at the time of her high school graduation.
A bench was dedicated to the women in Victims Memorial Garden in Springfield's Phelps Grove Park in 1997.

June 6: 6 p.m. Suzie Streeter and Stacy McCall graduate from Kickapoo High School. Graduation ends at Hammmons Student Center 7:30 p.m. A friend of Suzie's drops off a graduation cake for her. 8:30 p.m. Suzie and Stacy show up at their first party of the night in Battlefield on Coach Drive 9:30 p.m. Sherrill's friend calls her at the house, where she's refinishing a chair 10:30 p.m. Stacy calls home and tells her mom that she won't be driving to Branson. They'll spend the night at Janelle's however the pair wind up at Streeter’s house at 1717 E. Delmar St. about 2 a.m.
June 7.June 7: 1:30 a.m. Suzie and Stacy appear at another party in the 1500 block of East Hanover Street in Springfield Just before 2 a.m. They go back to Janelle's house on their way to Suzie's, where they would sleep in her new king-size waterbed. 8 or 9 a.m. Janelle calls Suzie's house. No answer. She leaves a message. 12:30 p.m. Janelle and her boyfriend go to the house on East Delmar Street looking for Suzie and Stacy, but there is no sign of the girls or Suzie’s mother, Sherrill Levitt. 7 p.m. Janis shows up at the house prepared to take Stacy's belongings and her car home. Police are called late that evening.
June 8: Police begin investigating the case and go to the house and wait for a search warrant to go inside. The unlocked house appears as if the women simply vanished while getting ready for bed. By the end of the night, police know they have something serious on their hands and the media learn about the disappearance.
June 9: The FBI is called in.
June 13: The community is invited to help in the search. Dozens of people comb wooded areas.June 14: Authorities begin a sweep of wooded areas and streams in the Springfield area and search the Bolivar road Apartments after someone leaves a letter in a News-Leader rack at Smitty's 218 S. Glenstone Ave. containing a rough drawing of the apartment complex and the phrase, “use Ruse of Gas Man checking for Leak,”. Also on this day, pictures of the women air on the television show “America's Most Wanted.”
June 15: Police begin working a fresh tip about a transient who neighbors reported seeing near the home in the days before the women disappeared. A sketch is released, showing a man with long hair and a full beard. The Missouri Victim's Center schedules group counseling sessions for friends, family and community members struggling with the disappearance.June 16: Police release a photo of a retouched Dodge van, similar to one seen near Levitt and Streeter's home early on June 7.
June 18: Because of resources needed for the missing women case, the Springfield Police Department eliminates overtime in its traffic and DWI programs.
June 21: Police hammer out their theories. Deputy chief Ron Worsham says it appears to be an Abduction and it could go in two directions. 1. A drifting transient watched and waited, then kidnapped the women. 2. Or the answer was in Levitt's background. Police dig deeper into Levitt's past. The reward fund stands at $3,000.
June 24: Police work on a new tip. A waitress at George’s Steakhouse, one of Levitt’s favorite restaurants, says she saw the three women at the diner between 1 and 3 a.m. June 7. The women arrived and left together. The waitress said Suzie appeared giddy, perhaps intoxicated, and her mom tried to calm her down. The reward fund skyrockets to $40,000 after a secret gift.
June 28: Police end their 24-hour command post at Levitt’s home.July 19: FBI Special Agent James Wright comes to Springfield, to gather information and perhaps develop a psychological profile of the abductor. Sept. 15: Levitt's son, Bartt Streeter, considered an initial suspect, quits his job and leaves Springfield. He has not returned. It is the 100th day of the investigation. Janis McCall: "I'd hate to think of doing this another 100 days."

Jan. 2: An anonymous New Year’s Eve caller to a switchboard operator of “America's Most Wanted” is cut off when the operator tries to link up with Springfield investigators. Police still seek contact with the man, whom they consider to have prime knowledge of the abductions.
Feb. 14: For the first time, police announce that they are considering the possibility that the disappearances are the work of one or more serial killers.March 9: Suzie Streeter's 20th birthday. Her grandparents offer several hundred dollars in additional reward money in a taped appeal played on local television.April 22: McCall's 19th birthday. Aug. 28: Information from an informant leads police to search farmland in Webster County looking for bodies. Police say they find items at the scene, but will not elaborate. The results of the search warrant were sealed.

A lead prompts authorities to search a section of Bull Shoals Lake, where they find animal remains and pieces of clothing. The clothing does not match the description of what the women were wearing.
— 1995 —
A grand jury disbands in January without handing up indictments. Robert Craig Cox, whose name came up early in the investigation, is arrested in Texas for aggravated robbery. After information on Cox is presented to a grand jury, investigators interview him in a Texas prison. In the grand jury, Cox’s ex-girlfriend tells jurors that she lied when she told police Cox was with her at church the morning of June 7, 1992.
