USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.

"“Always ask yourself: Why is this lying bastard lying to me?” Perhaps these blunt words of advice for journalists interviewing politicians, attributed to the late foreign correspondent Louis Heren, have endured because they are seen as self-evidently true. That politicians lie is viewed as established fact.
Public confidence in lawmakers plunged to a record low last year in the wake of Partygate and other scandals: only 9% of British adults polled by Ipsos said that they trust politicians to tell the truth. Without trust, says Jennifer Nadel of the thinktank Compassion in Politics, faith in democracy is undermined. “If we can’t trust what politicians are saying, how can we decide who to vote for? We need to be able to rely on our politicians to tell the truth,” she explains.
Compassion in Politics has long been campaigning to introduce criminal penalties for political lying, with a petition launched in 2019 attracting more than 200,000 signatures. In a surprise move two days before the UK’s general election, the Welsh government committed to passing legislation that would make lying illegal for Senedd members and candidates, having previously opposed the measure. Under the plans, those found guilty of deliberate deception by an independent judicial process would be disqualified from office.
“We’re excited and optimistic,” Nadel says. “It’s unprecedented that the government has agreed to take this measure forward.” Although some countries have limited penalties for politicians who lie during election campaigning or when giving evidence to committees, Wales is the first in the world to propose legislation that would apply more broadly to lawmakers and candidates.
Compassion in Politics’ next challenge is to persuade Westminster to follow suit by banning MPs and parliamentary candidates from lying.
The campaign sprung from concern at the rapid normalisation of lies in politics. “We are slipping at an alarming speed into a post-truth era,” says Nadel. “We only have to look at what is happening in the United States.”
Fact-checkers at the Washington Post found that Donald Trump made 30,573 false or misleading claims during his presidency, averaging about 21 a day. “America is a warning of what can happen if this problem is allowed to go unchecked,” Nadel believes. “[Our proposals] are designed to stop [the UK] from getting to that stage.”
Polling shows wide public approval for the measure, with 72% backing criminal penalties for politicians found guilty of deliberate lying in an Opinium survey conducted for Compassion in Politics in May. Though it is not yet clear whether Wales would make lying a criminal offence, Nadel says: “If the same goal of disqualifying politicians who deliberately misrepresent the facts can be achieved through using the civil law, then we’re happy.”
A private member’s bill to ban lying in Westminster, introduced by Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts in 2022, had cross-party support. “We will be looking to build [on that] and win the support of the Labour government to introduce the measure,” Nadel says...
“I think it’s important to signal a different set of norms, and try to arrest a slide towards the acceptability of attempts to deceive in public life.”
For Compassion in Politics, another challenge is persuading doubters that banning lying in politics is even possible. “There’s this belief that it’s too complex to stop,” says Nadel, who qualified as a barrister. “But the law prevents fraudulent misrepresentation in other walks of life. This is something that courts adjudicate on all the time. Why shouldn’t it apply to politicians?”"

Imagine jace and his young wife, both already married to each other for a while now and they've only just come of age. Then the young wife starts to show weird food cravings, finding the smell of certain foods repulsive, falling asleep at random hours of the day, etc. Rhaenyra immediately makes the connection that she's pregnant, immediately looks at Jacaerys Velaryon, flicks his ear and says 'Didnt i tell you that its too soon your pullout game is sh!t"😁😁😁 but shes actually happy for both and is only worried that theyre too young but knows theyre going to be great parents 💞
ABSOLUTELY. weak ass pullout game frfr
From the second you got betrothed and then officially wedded Jacaerys Velaryon, you both became extremely close to one another, and of course, you immediatly fell in love for each other. And as expected, after your wedding ceremony, you began sharing quarters together. Where, you know... Things most happen there, now that you have private time for yourselves, alone. *coughcoughCOUGHCOUGH👀👀*
Not too long after finally sharing chambers together, you suddenly began having strange reactions, needs, and attitudes. Some foods that you didn't mind eating or smelling previously — or you greatly liked them —, you suddenly found a huge distaste to them and felt disgusted to an extreme, continous vomiting, having abrupt mood swings, cravings for certain things you earlier in your life barely considered, being too sleepy and falling asleep anywhere, no matter the hour.
Rhaenyra, being a lovely mother of 5 beautiful boys, immediatly realised what your problem was one time after you made another mention of how you could barely tolerate the taste/smell of X food while being at dinner.
While you were distracted talking to someone else after said mention, Nyra was sitting by Jace's side, and of course, she turned to look at him, playfully took his ear as if she were 'sweetly caressing it' — actually was pinching and pulling it— and then leaned closer as to whisper to him.
“Jacaerys Velaryon. I thought we had talked about this. Isn't it too soon to father a child?” she whispered, clenching her teeth briefly at the end of her statement.
Poor Jace, he'll be nervously gulping and trying to act normal. But yeah, he kinda uhm, missed the part where he actually had to pull out. Got too carried away with the fervid moment of carnal love.
Anyways, you called a maester to check up on you; and indeed, you were with child.
Even if Rhaenyra is merely concerned because you are still young people that recently came to age, and she just wants you to have all the best safety in the world when it comes to pregnancies, our lovely girl Nyra is tremendously joyful to hear you are having a child together, and will soon be a grandma. She has zero doubts at all that you will be the best, and most caring parents ever.
Expect her to be by your side always. She will always recommend Jace how to treat you, how to show you love and support throughout your pregnancy, things to keep in mind, and of course, parenting tips. This not only goes for Jace, but for you as well. And she will be particularly attentive to you, taking the best of care for you, and helping you out with whatever you need: food cravings, warm baths to help you calm you down, names for the baby, preparations, etc.
And she is also the type of sweet mother-in-law to stick by your side before, during, and after the birth of your child BECAUSE THAT'S HOW PRECIOUSLY LOVING SHE ISSS 🥰🥰😭
And Jace? The best father ever. He will take his mother's wise advice about children very seriously, and will obviously use them on you. Taking care of you, giving you massages, tons of cuddlings and kisses, treating you even more softly, and offering you his hand and wholehearted support during the hard labour of the child.
Rhaenyra knows you'll be the best parents ever, and she's tremendously joyful to see you together so happy with your babe. Of course, she'll always be there to provide proper support and care <3

I want to write a little bit about structural racism in the UK against Travellers, and the Labour Party's complicity with this because I think it might help explain why that letter from Diane Abbott disturbed me so much.
Romani and Irish Travellers in the UK experience discrimination all the time. They'll be barred from shops and pubs, they experience discrimination from the police, they experience racial abuse. If they are living a nomadic lifestyle, they struggle to access schools and hospitals. Educational outcomes for Romani students are the worst in England by a large margin, followed by Irish Travellers. They're also over represented in the prison population compared to the proportion of the general population they make up.
Irish Travellers are generally "white/white passing" although they are a distinct ethnic group from the settled Irish. However, not all Romani people are "white passing" and some see themselves as PoC. Both groups have fought for a long time to be recognised officially as ethnic minorities and to gain legal protections.
In 2022, the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts act was passed. This is the "bill" that was the focus of the "kill the bill" protests, and lots was written about the restrictions it placed on protestors. However, part 4 of the bill related to unauthorised encampments. Although the law does not specifically name any ethnic groups, it effectively criminalises the traditional nomadic traveller lifestyle.
It creates an offence of residing in a vehicle (this would include a caravan) on land without permission. It allows the police to seize the vehicle, even prior to the offence being committed. It allows the police to impose fines and prison sentences.
Although the bill itself does not name any particular ethnic group, much of the advice and communication around the bill does. This is because it's clearly designed to target certain groups who live a traditional nomadic lifestyle. It's designed to make them homeless, and force them into housing- essentially forced assimilation. The British have been trying to do this to Romani and Irish Travellers for centuries.
This law was passed by the Tories, but one thing people don't know is that Starmer whipped the Labour party against most sections of the bill. He allowed a free vote on Section 4- the section that specifically related to "unauthorised encampments".
Around the same time, in 2021, his party produced local election leaflets which mentioned "traveller incursions"- eventually they admitted the leaflets were racist and destroyed them. It's not the first time, and won't be the last, that Labour use racism against these groups to win points with the electorate.
In this context, Abbott is part of a system which is systematically discriminating against Romani and Irish Travellers- yes, Labour aren't the party in power, but they are a part of the system enabling this to happen.
So, I read her letter in that context. I read her minimisation of the struggles of the most marginalised ethnic groups in our society in that context (I don't want to make this "who has things worst" but it's nonetheless true). At best, she's throwing them under the bus to make a point she thinks will be popular with her supporters. At worst, she's actively affirming her own party's racist policies.
"It doesn't matter if we criminalise their way of life, because it's not "real" racism".
She is someone seen to be on the left, seen to be anti-racist, and she's effectively saying this prejudice is acceptable.
#uk politics#diane abbott#labour#racism#GRT#is the backlash more severe because she's black and a woman and on the left#well maybe#But there's also an awful lot of gaslighting going on towards Romani Irish Travellers and Jewish people on twitter#who don't have her institutional power#a timely reminder#politicians are not your friends

So, Jade Shadows. That quest was...Interesting. I've seen a lot of negativity, and I have to be honest, I disagree with a lot of the issues people have had with the quest. Maybe this is because I wasn't obsessively hanging on to every piece of promotion for this update, but I didn't find it underwhelming, or that it was poorly handled. Did we learn everything about the Stalker? No. And I don't think we were ever going to. But what we got was a key part of why he hates Warframes, specifically, and not necessarily the Tenno as a whole.
Spoilers under the cut
So, the warframe pregnancy. The implication of the quest, to me, is that Jade and Sorren were "low guardians", non-Dax guardians of the Orokin, who had a relationship, which resulted in Jade falling pregnant. This was against the Orokin laws (although it's unclear if it was the pregnancy of a Low Guardian which was illegal, or the relationship which resulted in the pregnancy) and at least Jade was turned into a Warframe, as punishment.
Despite becoming a Warframe, Jade remained pregnant, and eventually ended up taking part in the massacre of the Orokin during the Night of the Naga Drums. Sorren was, at this time, still a Low Guardian, and his life was spared by Jade. At some point, Sorren became the Stalker (I suspect after the Night of the Naga Drums, but that's not confirmed or explicitly denied anywhere, as I'm fairly sure the Hunhow narrated diorama was a figurative memory of the event, rather than literal), and discovered Jade.
Now, we don't know what condition Jade was in when he found her. It's possible she was unconscious, especially if she had an Operator controlling her, like many other warframes, but it's also possible that she became comatose at a later point in time. So, it appears that much of the Stalker's motivations around hunting down the Tenno are intended to protect Jade from being utilised as a weapon by the Tenno, out of a sense of guilt for failing to protect her from becoming a Warframe.
So, what does it mean for a Warframe to be pregnant? We have no clue. This is the first time we know of it having happened, and so there's nothing for us to base this on. That being said, the child appears to have inherited at least some of Jade's warframe abilities, as well as her physical appearance. This suggests that at some point during gestation, the baby became infected with the Helminth strain of Infestation. Will this child grow up? No idea. Will the child be able to move autonomously? Seems so, given they were moving while being held by the Stalker. This is something we'll have to wait and see about.
By the end of it, it seems like Stalker has abandoned Hunhow, and disappeared off into the system with his child. It seems like Hunhow now has no allies, but the Stalker does seem to have taken his advice from the Reapers Lament entries on the website - to cultivate something, to raise something to prosper - his child.
Now, I will admit, the labour minigame was...odd. I don't necessarily have a problem with it, it just wasn't particularly engaging? I think that's the only problem I had with the quest. I don't know what I would have preferred, but I'm sure there was something else that could have been done there.

A couple of notes on 'Jay' (@/JayyBio on twt)'s reply on behalf of Quackity Studios, from a Public Relations and Crisis Management perspective.
Preface:
This analysis attempts to keep as neutral of a stance as I can on this. I will support any worker's right to fair pay, especially with the hours that the QSMP admins put into this project. That being said, we, the viewers, cannot fully understand everything that has gone one with regards to privacy and confidentiality within the project.
Delivery:
The source of this media release comes from Twitter account JayyBio, an account created within the last 24 hours for the purpose of posting this message. The verification for this account was a follow from the official Quackity Studios account. This is absolute bare minimum and really shouldn't be done for anything, ever. I understand that they may wish to reduce the impact on viewers following the Quackity Studios account that are unaware of the situation, but doing this (and attaching a seemingly personal account to it) significantly impacts both the credibility and visibility of the statement.
Removal of Lea from the team:
Immediately, the attacks on Lea attempt to put the admin on the defensive. The evidence regarding her removal (including the 'grooming' screenshots, which she refers to vaguely, and even calls the notion crazy) is designed to target a sore spot within the community, and further complicate the situation.
As a managing body, it is administration's responsibility to clarify things like pay, fair compensation, and work. The screenshots don't call it 'stuff to do' or anything that would imply casual activities. Lea calls it work. As Lea was in a paid position instead of a volunteer one, the responsibility falls on the Studio's head to clarify these things.
The only proof of unavailability is two screenshots, a month apart, with the responding manager enthusiastically giving confirmation with no warning or advice. The only thing this proves is that Lea was not scolded (in the images provided) for taking unavailability.
This whole unavailability thing is a huge, underlying managerial issue, because a discussion should be had if a paid employee is unable to make what the team believes is the minimum activity. Both extremes claimed by both parties, i.e a full on scolding OR complete blind support are not viable solutions.
In short, either they're still not releasing the full reason for release (due to privacy or confidentiality reasons), or someone is lying. Regardless, the whole situation is underpinned by a much larger issue for the managing team.
NDAs:
Honestly, the fact that they weren't using NDAs right off the bat shocked me. In business (and a lot more frequently than you think) NDAs are used to preserve confidentiality within an organisation for a variety of reasons that I don't have time to cover. Depending on your labour laws however, they cannot be used to hide information regarding employee wages.
Quackity Studio's NDA was valid for the use of:
Protecting Copywrited Assets
Minimising Security Breaches and/or Risks
Protecting Storylines and "Lore Leaking"
Protecting the Privacy of team members and CCs
The NDA was *not* valid for:
Penalizing the formation of personal relationships (yes, even parasocial ones)
Communicating with other members of the team, even regarding Wages and Working Conditions
That isn't to say that the cases not covered by the NDA can't be called unprofessional (especially in the case of parasocial relationships) but they are not grounds for being sued.
You know what is grounds for being sued?
DOING A Q&A REGARDING SENSITIVE INFORMATION ON TWITTER!
The threats from QStudios from Lea's initial posts, while deeply unprofessional and drawing a fairly worrying image of the working environment, were just empty threats. Now that Lea has well and truly broken an Actual Signed NDA, this gets real complicated.
I'm not in law, so I'll leave it up to the armchair law students, but this is just a summary of my thoughts while reading up on the reply PDF.
Items not Covered:
Pay for the overall position (I do not know enough about french labour laws)
Treatment of staff who spoke out prior to Lea's statement (too much back and forthing)
Further Action:
Quackity Studios, please set up an account for statements and releases. I cannot emphasise how D-tier this is reading it through a brand new unbranded account.
ALSO GET YOUR CEO'S APPROVAL BEFORE POSTING A STATEMENT?

I see a lot of people writing various sex work AUs who maybe don't have very much exposure to the industry outside of popular media, which has traditionally not represented it with respect or accuracy. This is something I can speak about at length from a real life perspective, so I've tried to break it down into some managable chunks!!
Disclaimer: This is not a 'how to' guide, nor should it be used as one, nor is it meant to be a suggestion to enter the sex industry. There are often very real safety issues in being a sex worker. If you are considering, please research thoroughly into advice, community programs and local charities before you do so.
At it's core, sex work refers to the labour that someone does while working in the sex industry. This covers all manner of jobs, but particularly FSSWs (full service sex work - the act of exchanging sex for money), pornstars, cam workers, strippers, dominatrixes, phone sex operators, and sugar babies. Although their experiences will differ, people of all gender and sexual identities will work in these rolls.
I do not have the experience required to give a thorough breakdown of how all these industries work and I implore you to research them properly before writing them.
FSSW takes place in a variety of ways - I'll go over online and street-based here, as I have never worked in a brothel and frankly, don't quite understand how it works.
Online: Many workers set up a profile on an online platform, or utilise social media to advertise. They will display their prices, their 'dos and don'ts' list, and some pictures. Clients will then contact you. Platforms specifically for this, like AdultWork, often have a rating system that allow people to leave reviews for both workers and clients, to minimise risk.
Street-Based: This is probably the system more people imagine when they think of FSSW, in which workers will hang around in popular areas for escorts (some cities have areas famous for this, but depending on legality, this can be better or worse for safety) and pick up customers there. Sometimes they return to either the worker's home, or the client's, a hotel room, or use a car or public toilet.
Strip clubs my beloved. Stripping works very differently in different places, so this is based on my experience working in clubs in the UK.
Stage Work: Not all clubs have huge stages and tall poles for routines. Your character doesn't have to be a professional grade dancer to work in a club like this. If the club has a poll, you will likely be expected to go on it at least once a night, but think of this like 'advertising'.
Tipping: Tipping culture is going to vary anywhere in the world - in the UK, where we don't have low denomination bank notes, no one is throwing singles at you on stage. It's also very variable, sometimes you might pull £300 in tips in a night, others, you might pull nothing at all. It depends on the people.
Dances: Many clubs work on a tiered system for dances, particularly where workers aren't making money on tips on the floor. My club worked on a 'private dance' and 'VIP dance' system, where private dances were shorter and less expensive, usually one on one, and VIP dances are longer, often in a more private room, and sometimes come with things like a drink. You can keep someone in a dance for longer than they paid for if they give you more money. Different clubs work differently in terms of taking a cut - some, you pay a percentage of what you earn in a night, others have a 'house fee', which is a set payment (that might be higher on weekends) that essentially works as 'renting out space' in the club to work as a private contractor.
Outfits: The clothes you wear will also vary hugely on where you live. In the UK, different counties have different laws regarding how much skin you can show in the 'open bar' area, so you might have to wear a gown, which are often long, to cover your butt, but with a slit up the skirt, and low cut. In other places, you can wear underwear, but not show your nipples unless if a private room. I've known dancers also wear bikinis. Almost all dancers will wear Pleasers or a similar brand of stripper shoe, which are specially designed to be worn for long periods of time. The toes of the shoe is also used to 'clack' the dance floor (make a loud noise when it hits it) so you can make an audible impact when you do a knee drop from a pole or other similar moves.
Sites: Camwork is, obviously, pretty much exclusively online. Most workers that I know work from home, and use either a hosting website like MyFreeCams, or advertise privately on social media for Skype shows. Hosting sites will take a cut of your profits, as these payments are all online. Some, it's a set percentage of your earnings. Others, like MFC, encourage you to do 'private shows' as they take a lower percentage of your money than, for example, a tip given in a free show.
Tiers: Every site I've used has multiple tiers: 'free room' is quite literally a chatroom where you can advertise and chat to people to try and convince them to tip you or 'take you private'. Then, you have group shows, where you have a non public chatroom that clients pay to watch, but other people can join in if they pay. Then, private rooms are where you are one on one with someone. Some sites will not allow you to be nude in a free room, as not all of them require membership - and thus age verification - to chat.
Levels: 'Levels' in how sex workers describe what they are willing to do in a chat room - for example, a character might have a 'higher level' in a private room than a group one because they will earn more money that way. More money = more to look at. This can be the difference between showing nudity, and using toys.
Camwork is, in my personal experience, the most varied form of work. Some clients will want your character to just chat to them, some will ignore anything they say and simply wait for them to 'show them the goods' etc. There are also camshows with 'specialties', and these are as varied as the human sexual experience: sitting in the bath, to cleaning the house and ignoring the chat.
Phone sex lines work in a similar manner to camwork, in the sense that some workers choose to host their profile and number on an industry site, and others advertise privately. Some things to keep in mind:
Hosting on a site will often create a barrier between the client and the worker, protecting their privacy, and meaning they often won't carry a second phone. Those who advertise privately often will.
The variety of kinks and preferences your character will come across on phone sex lines are also as varied as they are in cam work - every kind of fetish imaginable, and often with no prior discussion. Plan for their surprise in those instances.
Is your story taking place in a universe where sex work is legal? Is it criminalised, legalised, or decriminalised?
Is your character 'out' to friends, family etc?
Workers talk to each other. Unless your character is new to the industry, they will likely have a community, even a small one, that they exchange information about safety and opportunities with. This might be within a club, a brothel, or a local area.
Here is a list of prompts for sex work AUs that do not rely on sex worker falls in love with client. I cannot stress enough how this is not a common occurance. The relationship is transactional, and quite often, based on mutually ignored lies. I'm not saying it doesn't happen or can't work in a way that is healthy, I'm just saying, in my experience, whores tend to love, fuck, and marry other whores before they do civs. I love a cliche as much as the next guy, but stretch outside the box on this one, trust me. Note: As always, I have tried to write these to leave them open to romantic or platonic dynamics, and comedy, tradegy, or romantic storylines. Go hog wild, experiment.
Character A works in politics, and has gone to several charity galas where they have noticed various different collegues entering with the same person. Character B, an escort who has been hired by several prominent politicians, notices that they have been clocked.
Character A is working as a cam model to put themselves through college while desperetly coming up with increasingly ridiculous lies to cover the noises coming from their room to their dormmates.
At a popular strip club in [INSERT CITY], Character A is put in charge of showing Character B the ropes.
Character A and Character B, two FSSWs who have never worked together, agree to work a double with a long term client. They go out for coffee afterwards.

Your historical metas are so good!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Would tom have worked growing up? Also would he have had any schooling? What kind of future would he have expected to have after growing up?
Omg thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them <33
Tom likely would not have had a paying job during and pre-WWII. For the first reason, he's too young pre-WWII. Laws introduced during the Victorian period largely protected children from working (outside the home) by limiting working hours and by the 20th century and particularly following WWI, child labour had died down substantially. Yes, it still existed, but Tom was more likely to be involved in household enterprises which is basically just the fancy name for working from home. I've mentioned this before, but Tom would've been expected to take care of the younger kids as well as doing other chores. He would've had to take part in laundry, potentially cooking, cleaning and general upkeep. He would've been busy, but it's what everyone in the orphanage would've done. Funding only stretched so far and it certainly didn't stretch far enough to employ any one to do those jobs.
Tom would've gone school. Depending on the size of Wool's, this would've been at the orphanage itself, or at the local school. In the 1920s and 1930s, school was compulsory for all children aged 5-14 and Tom would've also been expected to go to Sunday School. It wasn't to the same standards we have now, though. School focused on the three Rs — reading, writing and arithmetic (yes I'm aware only one of them starts with R. They really didn't follow their own advice) — as well as emphasising the importance of King and Country. The 20s and 30s were a highly nationalistic period (which in part caused WWII) and schools were not excluded in this. Tom would've written on a slate with chalk and caning was common.
If Tom had been muggle, he would've left school around 14 and found either an apprenticeship or (more likely) gone to work in a factory or in the docks. I'm not sure how the war would've interfered with this and I'm not sure what Tom would've done. He would likely remain in the East End for his whole life, never breaking free of the lower classes (class mobility is ROUGH in the UK even to this day). He may have married, but I don't think this is really on point for Tom (who I tend to read as either gay as fuck or asexual). Still, he may have married and may have had kids, I just don't know. I wonder how far he would've gone with doing what was 'expected' of him.
Even with the war, I believe Borgin and Burkes was Tom's first actual job. Tom would've been pretty stuck in the muggle world without a ration card and the magical world is so heavily rooted in blood prejudice and connections that Tom wouldn't have been able to get a job. I don't think he could exactly put Heir of Slytherin on his CV.

Depressing story:
Young woman gets pregnant and keeps it because her boyfriend wants her to, but they don't live together, she's new at her job, he works part time several townships away. They get married cheaply. It's awkward, almost nothing goes well, and she can't help but think she's made a terrible mistake.
The pregnancy takes its toll on her. He gets more excited about their impending child, she gets more depressed. He persuades her to move to his small town to live with him for their child's sake. She does so reluctantly and against the advice of her grandparents. The birth is hard and traumatic and he's not supportive the way she'd hoped, walking away several times during the labour.
He's helpful with the childcare at first but pulls away, reasoning that he has to work and she has no job to return to. The sex after she heals is awkward and she finds herself making excuses not to. He compares her to the typical sex-denying wife and occasionally she goes ahead to just keep him happy.
During a visit home and watching people go about their day and interact, the thought comes to her that she has to get out. She doesn't voice this to anyone. A man notices her standing alone and engages her in conversation. She's flattered for someone to show interest as her husband takes her for granted. It turns to a topic she's familiar with and she speaks animatedly as she can't do with her husband since he finds it annoying.
Her husband finds her and she can tell he's jealous. The other man can too and makes subtle digs that she stifles laughter over. Her husband is angry with her and drives recklessly home. This prompts an argument when they get home because of the risk to their child. He gets rough with her, digging his fingers into her shoulders until she winces in pain. He apologizes immediately afterward, holding her as she cries.
It takes her some time but she eventually confides in her best friends who tell her it's abuse. She has them with her when she initiates the divorce. He's upset at first but then amiable and they agree on shared custody. But he gets jealous over every positive interaction she has with a male, and tries to remind her of "good times" having sex. This causes her constant background stress as she works, pays rent, and raises her child.
By the time the child is twelve they're having problems at school. Her ex husband tries for full custody, using accusations of neurodivergence making her an unfit parent, and believing she has a lot of boyfriends, though she's had none.
All the while she thinks she got off lucky. It could have been so much worse after all. At least he never slapped or punched her. At least he never abused their child. At least he was only acting now, when their child had some autonomy. But this is also an issue because how can she convince anyone that it was bad enough to divorce him over and that she doesn't think him having full custody would be good for their child?
Plenty of people in his and her family think she shouldn't even have gotten divorced, that she should have tried harder, gone to counselling, etc.. And she at times doubts whether giving him full custody might make their child better off after all. She somehow still feels somehow off about it, but doesn't know anyone with any authority she can turn to. She knows there's no real winning. If he gets full custody he'll make it so she has to interact with him a lot to see their child. If he doesn't he'll keep trying. And there's no viable way out of it all.
Except that when she got pregnant she had an abortion and none of that happened! And that's exactly what I did. He broke up with me over it and married another woman, but then he regretted the breakup and now tries strange ways to connect with me but there's no 12 year old child that the law forces us to interact over. So he gets to seethe. :)

One thing I love about this series is that it infuses reality. The animators scatter things and places to make it believable like Easter eggs. It also resonates the sentiments of the characters to the audience.
1) Takahashiya Mall could be Takashimaya. The red emblem is the clue. It is a luxury store that can be likened to Selfridges where only branded items are sold. I assume they went to the Nihombashi Tokyo branch. Which gives us the impression that knowing Kazuki, this was his favorite place to buy his clothes, etc. Until Anna Hanyu told him of the wonders of the discount stores.
2) I can’t believe they put “smock” in quotations. And Rei meant it was a cookie. What a Schmuck. Understandable as the two of them didn’t have any experience with it. I wonder if they wanted us to search for the etymology of the word which is women’s undergarment.
What it is and what is it really
3) The list of items a child needs in the daycare center is not absurd actually including placing the child’s name on every item. I’ve heard this from acquaintances who are kindergarten pedagogues about the reason it is important to write your child’s name on their things. The number of items that are lost or taken unintentionally is an everyday occurrence in these institutions (kigas, schools, etc.) bc often a child doesn’t care especially if the pieces of clothing are not written with the owner’s name. They also discourage the parents not to dress up their children in branded clothes. The number of complaints they get when the children come back home with dirty clothes is far too many. Good for the Japanese childcare system for having a foresight.
Also, I realised that there are a couple of types of childcare institutions in Japan that even the natives get confused. In the series Kazuki claimed that yōchien (幼稚園) and hoikuen (保育園) are the same. (“It’s the same thing with a different name.”) They were talking about hoikuen the whole time. Not sure if it was the writer’s intention. Although Kazuki got the fish difference correctly.
Hoikuen are legally defined as a child welfare institution and are subordinate to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Affairs, MHLW for short. Their focus is on the care of children whose families cannot take care of them during the day. That's why they are also the first point of contact for families where both parents work. Hoikuen therefore have long opening hours and accept children under one year of age. If they fulfil the requirements of the Child Welfare Act, they will receive a state license.
…
So-called yōchien kindergartens, on the other hand, are defined as schools under Japanese law and resemble preschools. For this reason, they are also subordinate to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT for short. Yochien only accept children from the age of three. Since they usually only offer half-day care, they are favoured by families where one parent does not work or works part-time. ( x )
Another source…
First of all, let’s define the word “daycare.” You might call it daycare or nursery school, but daycare in Japan is hoikuen (保育園) and is reserved for babies 56 days old up to 6 years old.
This is not to be confused with kindergarten (幼稚園 | yōchien), which is exclusively for kids 3 years old until they enter first grade. ( x )
4) Kazuki’s attempt to fit in on Miri’s first day at the daycare was not so far from the truth really.
Somewhere is a Louis Vuitton shopping bag
Believe it or not, Japanese mothers put a lot of effort on their choice of clothing on the day of the kindergarten interview. Kazuki had probably searched for those things and encountered the webpages where mothers gave advices on what to wear on this occasion. Take a note from this social content creator who used to work as a kindergarten teacher in Japan and is also a mum.
There is an “unofficial” dress code for these events, which is one step up from a funeral and a few notches down from an entrance ceremony. Take a look at what parents (mainly moms) should wear! ( x )
Too bad they exaggerated it on Miri’s first day. I cannot entirely blame Kazuki though. Him being an orphan who had witnessed poverty and being ostracized because of it, I guess, his opinion on how the people are treated based on their outside appearance bears unpleasant memories that he strives away from. Though it was a bit unfair to point out Rei’s social standing when K is not entirely privy to his friend’s traumatic past.
5) If the forged document below contains a bit of some facts (very important for writing fan fiction): Kazuki was born on the 16th of May, 1994. A Taurus. Miri, on the other hand, was born in 2018 November 8. They live in Naka Ward, apartment 801, 2-chōme (city district) Natsuyoshi (<<— I don’t think that really exists) Yokohama Prefecture. That is if there were some truths in it.

PLEASE HELP WITH THE BLOCKBERRYBOYCOTT.
ChuuJustice is a team of Orbits hoping to start a boycott of BBC in protest of the wrongful removal of Chuu. Our hope is to push BBC into treating their artists with respect and to have them admit their wrongful actions against their artists. Twitter will be the main source of information on this effort.
It is a well known fact that BBC mistreats their workers and their artists. Loona has been overworked and underpaid for YEARS now. This needs to stop. As this is in the wake of CHUUs wrongful termination, it is also important that we (orbits and other fans) push for BBC to either provide evidence of Chuus "abusive behaviour" OR admit to defamation. The hashtags we've settled on are #BlockBerryBoycott and #LoonaIsTwelve.
We have a discord server dedicated to working on this. In said discord there are roles connected to what each member will be working on. Our teams subdivisions include:
- Chuu Mistreatment Archive (an archive of all mistreatment BBC has committed against Chuu since the beginning of her connections with the company, to her wrongful termination.)
- General Mistreatment Archive (an archive of all mistreatment BBC has committed against ALL employees, including (but not limited to) the rest of LOONA, stylists, choreographers, trainees, etc.)
- Korean Labour Laws/Legal team (gathering evidence to prove BBC has committed crimes against their workers, such as human rights violations and defamation. THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE PURSUING LEGAL ACTION. We at ChuuJustice recognise that there are people handling this behind the scenes. Our goal is to obtain as much information as possible so that we can provide comprehensive information about exactly what BBC has done wrong and why they need to be boycotted.)
- Content Creation (creation of articles and graphics such as the ones at the end of this post)
- Outreach and Networking (connecting with as many other people as possible, preferably those with large platforms so our message is further spread)
- Translators (we already have translators for: Indonesian, Spanish, French, Arabic. Any other translators would be wonderful. We want the boycott to be accessible to everyone willing to help.)
ABOUT MISTREATMENT: mistreatment is a broad term, to narrow it down we are focusing on the overworking, underpaying, harsh diets (starvation), lack of proper promotion, etc.
We are hoping for many orbits to participate. We are working on a list of demands, we have a drafted version that we would like to be workshopped. We have discussed our list extensively, but any advice and input from participating orbits is welcomed.
We are trying to get as much traction as possible. Orbits have discussed boycotting for years, and yet nothing has been done. We are tired of waiting, if we want change to come we must respond accordingly. Please help us help LOONA and Chuu.
AFOREMENTIONED GRAPHICS:
PLEASE NOTE we have already reached our goal of receiving a video from DOYOURAM. please refrain from further emails. Our graphics will be updated with time. Furthermore, it is suggested that you delete SSLO entirely. You CAN save your account and progress. Please do so.
OUR FAQ. Please DM/send an ask if you have ANY further questions.
