Forty-eight hours in Seville.
We follow the locals to the Churreia La Esperanza[1] for breakfast, taken in the traditional method. A cup of hot chocolate sauce to dip them in and later gulp down the leftovers.

The huge flea market at Feria has the same collection of rubbish to be found at similar sales all over the world. I’m tempted by a 1960s white Fender guitar for only 150e. “As played by Hendrix”, the seller assures me. Closer inspection reveals hardly any original parts and the classic Fender logo peeling off.

We end the day back in Triana in one of the shaded squares that pepper the backalleys for tapas, cold beers and wine at the Taberna la Plazuela. Orange trees are everywhere, laden with fruit. We learn that the fruit of these street trees is not considered fit for human consumption, too sour and pippy, instead the fruit is allowed to drop then scooped up and composted for bio-fuel.
Our car is almost too wide to fit down the narrow alleyways, built for horse and cart, that criss-cross the Triana suberb that lies to the south of the Rio Guadaquivir so a guided walking tour is the way to see the sights of the city. Sure enough, our guide regales us with history and anecdotes as he leads past the most important features of the city centre. The Catedral y Giralda, 130m x 80m, is built over the site of the old mosque but retains many of its features and architectural design; Real Alcazar with it’s links to the Alhambra but with much more exotic and beautiful gardens; Plaza Espana and park and the Tobacco Factory made famous though the ages by Bizet’s Carmen. Two huge rotundas dominate the north bank of the Rio – the Opera and the Plaza de Toros.[2] Both establishments have a full programme of events throughout the year.
The police have closed the road on account of a “manifestation”, which we discover means a demonstration that is parading though the streets at the same time as the great and good of Seville turn out in their finery to attend a special performance at the Opera. It is a very special religious day celebrating the Virgin of Hope of Macarena (hey macarena). Not for us though, we’re off to see flamenco at Lola de los Reyes.[3] It is a powerful performance. You don’t have to understand what is happening, you must feel it. Love, passion, betrayal, ritual. Excellent guitar and song too.

Sonia Paulino Love Outbound to Montevideo, Day 21
Yesterday was a very nice day. Anticipated heavy rain had mostly dissipated to light drizzle. I felt honored to have been invited to visit Valentina's family's vineyards. They picked me up at the Airbnb with an assortment of both sweet and savory bizcochos as breakfast snacks for our hour or so drive through country roads and high hills. Fran asked "Are we there yet?"
On our brief tour of the farmland we munched on deliciously sweet harvest ready grapes while talking about her great-grandfather's migration story, her grandfather's recent passing at 100, and her brothers' intentions to continue the family's legacy.
We then drove through Piriapolis. Established in the late 19th-Century, it is one of Uruguays earliest resort towns for international ship-setters, but currently frequented mostly by middle-class locals. It is quaint and charming with art deco flourishes. We stopped for a chivito and burger for lunch where we discussed their impressions from their recent visit to NYC, including: the astonishing cost of real-estate, the absurdity of so many women's excessive use of makeup (most don’t wear any at all here), and the marvels of thin crust pizza and bagels and lox.
We continued on to the more modern resort town, Punta del Este. With its luxury hotels and designer shops, it is mostly frequented by wealthier locals, Argentinians, and international jet-setters. The rain and fog allowed for an unusually atmospheric and uncrowded view of "Los Dedos". We walked a bit and sat to enjoy ice cream together before I headed off to walk another mile to Punta de las Salinas, the southern-most point of the country and where the river and the ocean meet. I scrambled down the rocky point to touch the water, then turned right around to catch a bus home.
THE SUN was back today, so I headed out a little earlier than scheduled to visit the famous Feria de Tristian Narvaja. It is a maze of a flea market with rows of vendors on sidewalks and streets selling everything from aquarium fish to home furnishings and anything in-between. "Torta tres leches!" "Tengo termómetro!" It felt like the whole town was there, locals and tourists alike. I tired of looking for nothing in particular, so I filled my tote with fruit & veg for the week and left around noon, as THE HEAT and the crowds seemingly doubled.
Walking home from the bus stop, the very few people I saw in the neighborhood carried beach chairs and mate north to the park or south to the beach. It is a four-day weekend during Carnival that is also called Carnival.
I put on a nice blouse for an 8pm play at Teatro del Sol tonight, and toned down my red lipstick. A tablado about Carnival tablado, or a parody about parody. I sweat through my blouse on my way there, and it occurs to me how nice it is to enter a theatre or museum and not have to go through metal a detector or have to have your bags checked for guns or whatever.

Medellin // first leg
We arrived by a VERY long bus from Salento. The big bus took a diversion up the mountains on bumpy dirt tracks but we made it! Checking into our hostel, la Florentina, in the touristy and safe area of El Poblado, we got a good vibe. Even though our room was quite small, we liked the shared areas and the second hand clothes shop. Once checked in, we nipped out for a quick pizza before getting an early night, ready to explore the next day.
Tumblr media
We were expecting a busy and similar city to Bogotá, however were pleasantly surprised see how much money has been pumped into the city in the last 20 years. The city was one of the most dangerous in the world however now, it’s absolutely amazing with the windy roads, pedestrianised streets, fairy lights and modern bars and restaurants. We ate some great food, Naan (an Indian) being our favourite Indian we’ve had yet, Archie’s ‘most delicious pizza’ he’s ever had at Cafe Zorba, of course a great menu del dia at Veg Station and on our final night some sushi and ramen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as simply chilling with our new pals, Megan + Calum, having nice food and drinks. Courtney visited the Modern Art Museum which had some fab exhibitions in. We are hoping to visit a couple more museums when we return back to Medellin.
On our last day before we head to Guatape for a long weekend, we went on a Pablo Escobar tour. As we know it’s very much a taboo to discuss him as a tourist here, as many Colombians have juxtaposing opinions, it was fascinating to visit the museum and learn about how he became so rich, what he spent his money on and where he would frequent. On the your we visited one of his old stash houses which had many actual items from his life, a memorial for all those who suffered from the violence and his burial site.
Tumblr media
We are planning on returning to Medellin after we have a long weekend in the lake town of Guatape, many people living in the city escape to this tranquil place so we’re excited to have a holiday on holiday…

Medellin // second leg
After a long weekend in the lakeside town of Guatapé, we return back to Medellin to tick some more things off the to do list. Checking into our hotel around the corner from the last, Polado Guest House, we were pleasantly surprised at the facilities and amazing mountain views from the shared kitchen. Arriving in the afternoon, we decided to have a dinner at Sushi Gama again before getting an early night.
First on the list was the Explora Park, Medellin’s Science Museum. We used the Metro system for the first time since travelling and loved how easy, cheap and safe it felt. Medellin’s metro system consists of overground trains, cable cars and trams. The science museum had plenty of interactive things to play around with, many dinosaurs and a really fun interactive room full of how films are made. Archie really wanted to head to the aquarium too which was onsite and apparently is the largest in Latin America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feria de las Flores (Medellin’s annual flower festival) started on the Saturday and we were hoping to get tickets to see some events, however unfortunately the opening days were mainly for industry and had sold out, this is when we decided to head to the coast a couple of days earlier than planned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having only one day to finish our Medellin trip before our 18(!) hour trip North, we decided to spend our final day at the Botanical Jardins, riding one of the famous cable cars across the city and finishing with our favourite pizza of all time at Cafe Zorba. The botanical gardens and pizza were MUCH more enjoyable than the cable cars! Proud we managed to not only go on one but get back the route we came, the cable cars were absolutely terrifying. Up so high above hills housing many communities, we could feel all the bumps and spins and Courtney almost fainted when the system came to an emergency stop due to traffic. BUT we made it!!
Tumblr media
With just a few hours until our long, overnight bus to Santa Marta, we went back to our favourite pizza place for a chimichurri pizza for Arch and a half margarita, half spinach vegan for Courtney.
Wish us luck and sleep on this bus!

Construyamos nuestra propia desobediencia. --Translation Let us build our own disobedience. Do not confuse the Ni una Menos with the Mee Too. Every movement and every feminism can only be built with the elements of its own history.  [...] Regardless the Ni Una Menos, there exists a colonization towards the interior of the social movements. That colonization tends to betray us and confuse us. The Me Too, rooted in the North American pilgrim feminism, is directed to and makes signs to the Government paternity, to a mediator as an essential arbitrator in the relationships, to a lawyer in the pillow; probably as the only tool in an world made of wholehearted individualism. While the Me Too speaks to the Government, the Ni Una Menos speaks to us, to everyone in our society.
