THE JETSET LIFE IS GONNA KILL YOU, ERIC CARTER!
my laptop charger uhhhhhh. met its end in a very permanent, very fire hazardy kind of way last week. while waiting for a replacement I decided to try and get some work done at the library and was asking around for some urban fantasy (extra points for a mystery plot of some kind) recommendations to check out while I was there
the eric carter series was mentioned a couple of times, AND had the added bonus of having a necromancer for a main character. I love necromancers. someday I'm gonna play one in a game instead of immediately defaulting to vampires.

Sweetness
The man’s neck hadn’t been snapped yet when he walked into the bar. The sweetness of the smile on his lips felt like it didn’t belong to him; it was foreign and intruding on his face - which was scarred from the mouth down. He licked his lips hungrily, in one way or another, before brushing his messy, ginger hair from his face with a wholly bandaged hand. I hadn’t known who he was, then. So, I called him over.
The man’s neck still hadn’t been snapped when he sat opposite of me. The sweetness on his breath wasn’t his own – the dizzying smell of Crimsons, illegal though they are, is unmistakable. He licked his lips, chasing a high, either the one still coating his lips or the one in front of him, as he talked in an attractive, Southern drawl – which didn’t sound quite right. I hadn’t known who he was, then. So, I listened to him.
The man’s neck had been about to be snapped when he introduced himself to me, as kin. The sweetness shared between us felt like it didn’t belong, quickly becoming strained and feigned at best. He licked his lips almost impatiently, his attention wandering increasingly often as he started fidgeting with the heavy scarf looped atop his narrow shoulders, absentmindedly tugging it upwards – over his disfigured neck and jaw. I hadn’t known what he was, then. So, I warned him of descending hands.
The man’s neck had been snapped when he picked himself up off the soaking floor. The sweetness – red, liquid, and dripping from his mouth – didn’t belong to him. He licked his lips clumsily before wiping his chin with the sleeve of his trench coat, which was slightly too big for him. He should be dead, and was, though only in his eyes. Blue-green eyes, vibrant turquoise encircling lime green. Impassively intense eyes, meeting my own, impossibly wide. I hadn’t known what he was, then. So, I let my guard down. After all, what kin feasts on the thicker of water and blood? And who am I, if this is one of my own?

Hey GT! Do you hope to be a published author someday? What would you write?
No, I don't! Writing is a beloved hobby for me, but I don't aspire to publish. Fanfic scratches the writerly itch without putting too much pressure on the output, not least because I'm not asking people to pay for my work. It also means I don't have deadlines or expectations of output except those that are self-imposed. It's a nice middle-ground between locking up my projects in a secret folder on my desktop, never to be glimpsed by human eyes, and pitching my naked heart like a fastball in the general direction of the English-speaking universe.
If I ever had an idea for an original novel that I liked enough to finish it, I might try my hand at getting it published, but I see a bit of a difference between that and wanting to be a published writer. Like, if it happens, great; if it doesn't, I'll be just as happy.

I love the InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire, I love these books so much, but I never see anyone talk about them (at least on Tumblr, barely any fanfic on AO3 also)
It's Urban fantasy, fairly kitchen sink, about a family of Monster Hunters turned Monster Conservationists (Cryptozoologists, Cryptobotannists, Crypto Social Workers), it's got fun world-building, it's Chocked full of found family, so much found family, and Y'all should read them
so if that sounds like fun, or you like Urban Fantasy, or you like Seanans other works (October Daye, Wayward Childen, etc) please give them a look

2024 reads / storygraph
This Ravenous Fate
start of a sapphic YA duology set in 1920s Harlem, in a world where reapers (vampires) are the result of horrific human experimentation
follows a reluctant heir to a powerful reaper-hunting family, who has just returned from paris
and her childhood best friend who she hasn’t seen since she was turned and almost killed her five years ago
in the wake of a string of murders, they’re forced to work together to find out how they’re linked, and investigate rumours of a cure
#this ravenous fate#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#sapphic books#I thought this was pretty decent! I thought the concept of the origin of vampires and how it discussed Black oppression and#treatment of vampires; and discussions of class privilege etc was interesting.#The main characters and their dynamic was great! I liked the friendships (though they fell off a bit…) and some of the family dynamics too.#I found the plot and pacing a bit all over the place though.#And I’m not sure how much is the writing and how much is the narration but I didn’t LOVE the writing.#The narrator doesn’t pause between POV switches which made it hard to keep track of sometimes.#I found a lot of the adults (/antagonists) a bit too cartoonishly evil? Though that might also be due to the narration -#eg after a whole scene of her dad yelling at her his voice is described as ‘steady & calm’ & I was like oh…..so not at all how that was act#It might have come across a bit more subtle and nuanced without such dramatic acting.#some of the lore was a little silly (like they age til they’re 25 then stop aging….ok sure)#but also sometimes with vampires the point is to lean into those aspects haha!#it reminds me of these violent delights - like obviously the enemy exes solving a supernatual murder in 1920s -#but also writing wise (both good and bad)#I think if you just want a good YA urban fantasy enemies to lovers with Black lesbians? if you wanted first kill to be a bit better?#then yeah check it out!

Excuse me while I stare at the ceiling for hours because I've finished my reread of the series and my first read of this glorious installment.
Chances are if you're here, you like found family of misfits (queer af), angst, banter, and magic worlds. Yeah?
Ok. Don't walk. RUN to these books. If you're an audio person, highly highly recommend those. Check TW.

reading f.ourth w.ing atm and i just. (cut bc it's not complimentary and i don't wanna hurt anyone who loves it, ily)
i can't get over how it's meant to be this epic fantasy with dragons and magic and a whole new world with political issues and such, very much not the present day, but the tone/style of writing and dialogue just reads like a 2000s american high school movie to me. i feel like the writing would make so much more sense for an urban fantasy book with (specifically american) teenagers. it's also not young adult but it feels like it's written that way and i don't like that
add to that the vibes that feel very sorta...d.ivergent series, very Special But Not Like That protag and constantly mentioning how these boys are hot. i also read the p.oppy w.ar trilogy recently and it feels like it's trying to do the same thing as that gruelling military academy with a mc who's smart but has to figure out ways to fight bc she's not strong, and i'm not there yet but f.w. feels like it's building to the first years getting tossed into war too, but p.oppy war had the immersion and rich cultural worldbuilding i've not found here yet
mostly i feel like it's being told by l.indsay l.ohan or something tho and i just want to be immersed in the worldbuilding, that's what i read fantasy for

This was the perfect read for a snow day with no power! I loved seeing just how much a golden retriever Rin is. He’s absolutely adorable and a little bit ridiculous. And I loved that Chiharu was both fascinated and irritated by him simultaneously. Also loved that he said he wasn’t into men until Rin’s claws came out and then he was very 👀👀👀. They were just so cute together and I can’t wait to see where this story goes. Volume one is getting four stars!
