the ideas ive had for short stories that i may never right. but should have.. sighs.
#when i was on the retail hell grind it was abt the supernatural beings working at a department store but that idea got shelved bc while i#LOVE reading urban fantasy#writing it requires like research bc world building and like. deciding what kinda supernatural beings i want and im bad at that#also i kinda forgot what i wanted.i kinda forgot once i stopped working retail and when i was working retail i was so ungodly tired i had#no time to write. rn im thinking abt a short lesbian romance story set in southern taiwan abt a carribbean schooarship student and#a neighbor from the next apartment complex. vased off the experiences of ppl ive met here and i just think itd be neat. bc like the#carribbean diaspora in taiwan is a lot bigger than mostly anyone realizes except for tje carribbeans that make their community here and.#yea i just thought it was interesting.

THE JETSET LIFE IS GONNA KILL YOU, ERIC CARTER!
my laptop charger uhhhhhh. met its end in a very permanent, very fire hazardy kind of way last week. while waiting for a replacement I decided to try and get some work done at the library and was asking around for some urban fantasy (extra points for a mystery plot of some kind) recommendations to check out while I was there
the eric carter series was mentioned a couple of times, AND had the added bonus of having a necromancer for a main character. I love necromancers. someday I'm gonna play one in a game instead of immediately defaulting to vampires.
Fire Season, Stephen Blackmoore
#i was also told to check out johannes cabal because. again. necromancers. and sandman slim#i'll get around to it next year probably#ive had urban fantasy on the mind ever since I did a full re read of the dresden files and then a SECOND re read of it right after#but from a different starting point and then did an unnecessary examination of harry as an unreliable narrator#with a very specific kind of world vision that does funny things to his perception. idk what purpose that served#ANYWAY. i got a whole list of gritty urban fantasy recommendations to slowly work through next year#i dont really play around with original english language urban fantasy fiction very often because it's like#a lot of what i want out of it I already get out of japanese/korean comics I read and also filipino horror#so I'm not exactly starved for it except that I'm low key kind of starving for it. when will filipino horror return from the war#anyway i appreciate the hate the main character has for spanish colonialism#and as a long time whump enthusiast i love it when a character goes through the absolute wringer#creative liberties were taken. i thought about rolling up the sleeve on his. left? arm and then thought about the tattoos and changed#my mind lmao. i started drawing some of them tho. i once dated a guy who was similarly tattooed and for a minute i thought#'well i can just rip off all of that' and then i thought 'wait i still have to draw it' and decided Not To#eric carter series

Sweetness
The man’s neck hadn’t been snapped yet when he walked into the bar. The sweetness of the smile on his lips felt like it didn’t belong to him; it was foreign and intruding on his face - which was scarred from the mouth down. He licked his lips hungrily, in one way or another, before brushing his messy, ginger hair from his face with a wholly bandaged hand. I hadn’t known who he was, then. So, I called him over.
The man’s neck still hadn’t been snapped when he sat opposite of me. The sweetness on his breath wasn’t his own – the dizzying smell of Crimsons, illegal though they are, is unmistakable. He licked his lips, chasing a high, either the one still coating his lips or the one in front of him, as he talked in an attractive, Southern drawl – which didn’t sound quite right. I hadn’t known who he was, then. So, I listened to him.
The man’s neck had been about to be snapped when he introduced himself to me, as kin. The sweetness shared between us felt like it didn’t belong, quickly becoming strained and feigned at best. He licked his lips almost impatiently, his attention wandering increasingly often as he started fidgeting with the heavy scarf looped atop his narrow shoulders, absentmindedly tugging it upwards – over his disfigured neck and jaw. I hadn’t known what he was, then. So, I warned him of descending hands.
The man’s neck had been snapped when he picked himself up off the soaking floor. The sweetness – red, liquid, and dripping from his mouth – didn’t belong to him. He licked his lips clumsily before wiping his chin with the sleeve of his trench coat, which was slightly too big for him. He should be dead, and was, though only in his eyes. Blue-green eyes, vibrant turquoise encircling lime green. Impassively intense eyes, meeting my own, impossibly wide. I hadn’t known what he was, then. So, I let my guard down. After all, what kin feasts on the thicker of water and blood? And who am I, if this is one of my own?
#my flesh eating son#albion#so fun to write#yet such an awful POV chatacter#i usually hate writing 1st person povs#but 1. better than it being an albion pov#2. it just came to me. felt right#might suck cos of it tho#anyway uh#drug reveal!!#crimsons!!! they're fun#basically magic boosts for Magebloods while they Bloom and soothe Hexstarveds#do most my mutuals even know what that means#no I don't think so#you can get some context in the piece 'Flower in Bloom' ig#uh anyway!! hope you enjoyedddd!!!#mwah mwah mwah I love you thank you for reading#creative writing#writing#writers on tumblr#fantasy#urban fantasy#blood#magic#creative fiction#fiction#oc#original writing#original character#signed; fa

All I need is chocolate and season two of dead boy detectives
#dbda#dead boy detectives#netflix you can’t think you can fill the urban fantasy genre only with the umbrella academy so you either give us at least 3 seasons or#or you’ll give us the raven cycle tv show#actually both would be good but I have priorities first and since I have BOOKS about my girl blue and her boys its the baby ghosts’ turn#I love me some graphic novels but I read them in like two hours and then there’s no more like ever and I need good stuff to never end

Hey GT! Do you hope to be a published author someday? What would you write?
No, I don't! Writing is a beloved hobby for me, but I don't aspire to publish. Fanfic scratches the writerly itch without putting too much pressure on the output, not least because I'm not asking people to pay for my work. It also means I don't have deadlines or expectations of output except those that are self-imposed. It's a nice middle-ground between locking up my projects in a secret folder on my desktop, never to be glimpsed by human eyes, and pitching my naked heart like a fastball in the general direction of the English-speaking universe.
If I ever had an idea for an original novel that I liked enough to finish it, I might try my hand at getting it published, but I see a bit of a difference between that and wanting to be a published writer. Like, if it happens, great; if it doesn't, I'll be just as happy.
#if I had to write a published novel it would probably be... I dunno. gothic thriller? or—#speculative fiction with intense atmosphere. southern gothic or southwest USA. the dream would be to do something like the handmaid's tale#or possibly urban fantasy if I'm going more genre fic. something pulpy and fun like TMI#high fantasy is too much for me I get exhausted by having to fire up that much worldbuilding#at the same time as doing the plot and the characters#my two or three attempts at writing a high fantasy novel all spluttered out in the first few chapters because it felt too slow#I love reading high fantasy and high sci-fi it's a complete party. But I am happiest as a spectator in that ballgame

I love the InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire, I love these books so much, but I never see anyone talk about them (at least on Tumblr, barely any fanfic on AO3 also)
It's Urban fantasy, fairly kitchen sink, about a family of Monster Hunters turned Monster Conservationists (Cryptozoologists, Cryptobotannists, Crypto Social Workers), it's got fun world-building, it's Chocked full of found family, so much found family, and Y'all should read them
so if that sounds like fun, or you like Urban Fantasy, or you like Seanans other works (October Daye, Wayward Childen, etc) please give them a look
#owlbear grumbling#book recs#incryptid#seanan mcguire#urban fantasy#would it be rude to tag seanans other series?#october daye#wayward children#no I just really really love these books#Seanan if you see this post thankyou for writing them#ooh oh there's also a spinoff series called Ghost roads#about a hitchhiker ghost trying to stop the murderous immortal asshole that killed her#also very good#just generally this is a recomendation for Seanans works#everything I've read by her has been amazing

2024 reads / storygraph
This Ravenous Fate
start of a sapphic YA duology set in 1920s Harlem, in a world where reapers (vampires) are the result of horrific human experimentation
follows a reluctant heir to a powerful reaper-hunting family, who has just returned from paris
and her childhood best friend who she hasn’t seen since she was turned and almost killed her five years ago
in the wake of a string of murders, they’re forced to work together to find out how they’re linked, and investigate rumours of a cure
#this ravenous fate#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#sapphic books#I thought this was pretty decent! I thought the concept of the origin of vampires and how it discussed Black oppression and#treatment of vampires; and discussions of class privilege etc was interesting.#The main characters and their dynamic was great! I liked the friendships (though they fell off a bit…) and some of the family dynamics too.#I found the plot and pacing a bit all over the place though.#And I’m not sure how much is the writing and how much is the narration but I didn’t LOVE the writing.#The narrator doesn’t pause between POV switches which made it hard to keep track of sometimes.#I found a lot of the adults (/antagonists) a bit too cartoonishly evil? Though that might also be due to the narration -#eg after a whole scene of her dad yelling at her his voice is described as ‘steady & calm’ & I was like oh…..so not at all how that was act#It might have come across a bit more subtle and nuanced without such dramatic acting.#some of the lore was a little silly (like they age til they’re 25 then stop aging….ok sure)#but also sometimes with vampires the point is to lean into those aspects haha!#it reminds me of these violent delights - like obviously the enemy exes solving a supernatual murder in 1920s -#but also writing wise (both good and bad)#I think if you just want a good YA urban fantasy enemies to lovers with Black lesbians? if you wanted first kill to be a bit better?#then yeah check it out!

"Each of us wears our guilt differently."
Excuse me while I stare at the ceiling for hours because I've finished my reread of the series and my first read of this glorious installment.
Chances are if you're here, you like found family of misfits (queer af), angst, banter, and magic worlds. Yeah?
Ok. Don't walk. RUN to these books. If you're an audio person, highly highly recommend those. Check TW.

reading f.ourth w.ing atm and i just. (cut bc it's not complimentary and i don't wanna hurt anyone who loves it, ily)
i can't get over how it's meant to be this epic fantasy with dragons and magic and a whole new world with political issues and such, very much not the present day, but the tone/style of writing and dialogue just reads like a 2000s american high school movie to me. i feel like the writing would make so much more sense for an urban fantasy book with (specifically american) teenagers. it's also not young adult but it feels like it's written that way and i don't like that
add to that the vibes that feel very sorta...d.ivergent series, very Special But Not Like That protag and constantly mentioning how these boys are hot. i also read the p.oppy w.ar trilogy recently and it feels like it's trying to do the same thing as that gruelling military academy with a mc who's smart but has to figure out ways to fight bc she's not strong, and i'm not there yet but f.w. feels like it's building to the first years getting tossed into war too, but p.oppy war had the immersion and rich cultural worldbuilding i've not found here yet
mostly i feel like it's being told by l.indsay l.ohan or something tho and i just want to be immersed in the worldbuilding, that's what i read fantasy for
#i'm gonna delete this soon i don't like bitching abt things i dislike on the dash but alksjdhf mostly i find it a wild feeling to have#i'm gonna finish reading it before i decide whether i want to read the rest of the series but rn i'm like. feels jarring#i also read an our world fantasy series recently that didn't feel out of place in the same way so i do like urban fantasy too#it's not a hard read and i don't hate it but i'm also feeling like maybe this isn't the series for me#(which is totally okay! not everything's for everyone. i just usually love fantasy university vibes with DRAGONS)#tbd //

Happy Father’s Day to Brimstone from Daughter of Smoke and Bone <33
#daily psa to read dosab I’m serious. So many of you would like Dosab if you read it I am positive#many a time when speaking on something I like there’s a “I would but I wouldn’t reccomend it” element not with this everyone read dosab#daughter of smoke and bone#dosab#s speaks#done rereading the first book… now That is how you do ya urban fantasy (although the series is a cross between the urban/paranormal and hig#fucked up that certain paranormal ya from that era (like Fallen Shiver etc.) are getting a resurgence when they could never be what this#Series is I deserve an (animated! we’ll done!) adaptation (but live action my worst fear)#I swear to you the series is like if Cosmic Love by Florence was a book series if you care about my opinion please tbr#+ it’s about a girl who was raised by a monster family and the monster family is w on derful#and Karou and Zuzana’s friendship is everything and the atmosphere is perfect ugh#(Can especially say it’s perfect now given I’m where it’s set rn)#Anyway happy Father’s Day to the Chimeara who saved his pseudo daughter through the power of love and necromancy

This was the perfect read for a snow day with no power! I loved seeing just how much a golden retriever Rin is. He’s absolutely adorable and a little bit ridiculous. And I loved that Chiharu was both fascinated and irritated by him simultaneously. Also loved that he said he wasn’t into men until Rin’s claws came out and then he was very 👀👀👀. They were just so cute together and I can’t wait to see where this story goes. Volume one is getting four stars!
