Hot damn. Great question, I'd love to tell you.
High Fantasy
Look, this rainfrog is called Breviceps bagginsi, so I don't have a lot of choice, now do I?
[src]
Also, I would go with them to the end. Into the very fires of Mordor.
Low Fantasy
Phyllomedusine hylids have a certain weird clown marionette vibe to them. Just look at these Pithecopus rohdei.
[src]
Lovecraftian
The male Rhinoderma darwinii raises his tadpoles in his vocal sac.
Sci-Fi
Gephyromantis pseudoasper sometimes wear handsome stripesâvery Space Ageâ˘
But more importantly, their calls evoke a battle with laser-blasters.
I filmed this calling male in 2017 at an obscene hour of the morning.
Horror
Trichobatrachus robustus, aka the Hairy Frog, has flanks and thighs covered in weird, hair-like outgrowths that increase oxygen exchange over its skin, and BREAKS ITS FINGERS TO STAB YOU WITH CLAWS MADE OF BONE
[src]
Romance
Breviceps males physically glue themselves to the back-ends of females, and if that's not romance, I don't know what is.
[src]
Comedy
Nyctimantis arapapa are probably amongst the funniest-looking frogs out there.
[src]
Adult
The 'poly' in Polypedates may be a double entendre
[src]
Crime and Mystery
Calyptocephalella gayi is a Galaxy Brain frog.

Speculative
Myobatrachus gouldii is basically what would happen if you decided to try to build a turtle, but you only had frog pieces in the kit.

đŚ Today marks the english release of:
Set in Hungary, during the years of World War I, we follow Mina, a young woman who finds herself faced with a dilemma that will cause a major chain reaction in her life. Between hiding her gender and dealing with a threat she never believed was real, the girl must make a choice between abandoning who she was or embracing every part of herself - all while the world crumbles around her.
I finally finished translating my VtM story! I'm well aware of how much I babble about my guys, but now I can finally share this complete work with the tumblr community! Allow me a moment of sentimentality saying that this is one of the things I'm most proud of in my life :')
Buying options: Gumroad đš Amazon đš Or simply via DMs! I'll send you a link with the files after payment :)
Oh! And if you use Goodreads, feel free to log your reading progress.
I assure you that I studied a lot of the subject (from Remarque's work to real documents) so as to not be insensitive with the real event; while I publish the translation today, this project started in 2022.
I still plan on writing two more, with each being simultaneously a complete narrative and a piece of their story! But, being 100% an independent work, it won't be here for a while.
Misc. Stuff: Art đš Board đš Playlists ⪠⍠âŞ
(Since my "drawing drive" is not necessarily linear with the plot, I didn't add illustrations to the e-book file)
Extra Disclaimers: ⢠I priced it based on a poll I made, not only on bookstore costs, but if it sounds too much feel free to haggle! My intention is simply to share this story, not to become the next Bezos- ⢠I removed all mentions of VtM/WoD creations so as to not have any legal troubles, since this is an official publication (with ISBN and all!). The rights of this work of fiction are also already registered and protected. ⢠No A I was used in any part of this creation! It was all my sweat and tears work. I'm usually not the proudest person, quite the contrary, but it's kinda cool to be able to say that all this, the story, illustrations, translation, graphical project and physical production of the original portuguese release were all made by me :) ⢠Not only this is a vampire story, it's also set in war; I recommend this book for an 18+ audience.

Hello rangerâs apprentice fandom can we talk real quick about the stupidest thing Flanagan ever wrote
Itâs about the bows. Yanno, the rangers Iconiqueâ˘ď¸ main weapon. That one. You know the one.
Flanagan. Flanagan why are your rangers using longbows.
âuh well recurve arrows drop fasterâ BUT DO THEY. FLANAGAN. DO THEY.
the answer is no they donât. Compared to a MODERN, COMPOUND (aka cheating) bow, yes, but compared to a longbow? Yâknow, what the rangers use in canon? Yeah no a recurve actually has a FLATTER trajectory. It drops LATER.
This from an article comparing the two:
âBoth a longbow and a recurve bow, when equipped with the right arrow and broadhead combination, are capable of taking down big game animals. Afterall, hunters have been doing it for centuries with both types of bows.
However, generally speaking and all things equal, a recurve bow will offer more arrow speed, creating a flatter flight trajectory and retain more kinetic energy at impact.
The archers draw length, along with the weight of the arrow also affect speed and kinetic energy. However, the curved design of the limbs on a recurve adds to its output of force.â
It doesnât actually mention ANY distance in range! And this is from a resource for bow hunting, which, presumably, WOULD CARE ABOUT THAT SORT OF THING!
Okay so thatâs just. Thatâs just the first thing.
The MAIN thing is that even accounting for âhur dur recurves drop fasterâ LONGBOWS ARE STILL THE STUPID OPTION.
Longbows, particularly and especially ENGLISH longbows, areâas their name suggestsâvery long. English longbows in particular are often as tall or taller than their wielder even while strung, but especially when unstrung. An unstrung longbow is a very long and expensive stick, one that will GLADLY entangle itself in nearby trees, other peopleâs clothes, and any doorway youâre passing through.
And yes, there are shorter longbows, but at that point if youâre shortening your longbow, just get a goddamn recurve. And Flanagan makes a point to compare his rangersâ bows to the Very Long English Longbow.
Oh, do you know how the Very Long English Longbow was mostly historically militarily used? BY ON-FOOT ARCHER UNITS. Do you know what theyâre TERRIBLE for? MOUNTED ARCHERY.
Trust me. Go look up right now âmounted archery longbow.â Youâll find MAYBE one or two pictures of some guy on a horse struggling with a big stick; mostly you will actually see either mounted archers with RECURVES, or comparisons of Roman longbow archers to Mongolian horse archers (which are neat, canât lie, I love comparing archery styles like that).
Anyway. Why are longbows terrible for mounted archery? Because theyâre so damn long. Think about it: imagine youâre on a horse. Youâre straddling a beast that can think for itself and moves at your command, but ultimately independently of you; if youâre both well-trained enough, youâre barely paying attention to your horse except to give it commands. And you have a bow in your hands. If your target is close enough to you that you know, from years of shooting experience, you will need to actually angle your bow down to hit it because of your equine height advantage, guess what? If you have a longbow, YOU CANâT! YOUR HORSE IS IN THE WAY BECAUSE YOUR BOW IS TOO LONG! Worse, itâs probably going to get in the general area of your horseâs shoulder or legs, aka moving parts, which WILL injure your horse AND your bow and leave you fresh out of both a getaway vehicle and a ranged weapon. Itâs stupid. Donât do it.
A recurve, on the other hand, is short. It was literally made for horse archers. You have SO much range of motion with a recurve on horseback; and if youâre REALLY good, you know how to give yourself even more, with techniques like Jamarkee, a Turkish technique where you LITERALLY CAN AIM BACKWARDS.
For your viewing enjoyment, Serena Lynn of Texas demonstrating Jamarkee:
Yes, thatâs real! This type of draw style is INCREDIBLY versatile: you can shoot backwards on horseback, straight down from a parapet or sally port without exposing yourself as a target, or from low to the ground to keep stealthy without banging your bow against the ground. And, while Iâm sure you could attempt it with a longbow, I wouldnât recommend it: a recurveâs smaller size makes it far more maneuverable up and over your head to actually get it into position for a Jamarkee shot.
A recurve just makes so much more SENSE. Itâs not a baby bow! Itâs not the longbowâs lesser cousin! Itâs a COMPLETELY different instrument made to be used in a completely different context! For the rangers of Araluen, who put soooo much stock in being stealthy and their strong bonds with their horses, a recurve is the perfect fit! Itâs small and easily transportable, itâs more maneuverable in combat and especially on horseback, it offers more power than a longbow of the same draw weightâreally, truly, the only advantage in this case that a longbow has over the recurve is that longbows are quicker and easier to make. But we KNOW the rangers donât care about that, their KNIVES use a forging technique (folding) that takes several times as long as standard Araluen forging practices at the time!
Okay.
Okay I think Iâm done. For now.
#to be VERY clear. I Am Not An Actual Expert.#i AM however drawing from my own experience and research#and literally i can find Zero literature about recurve arrow flights dropping faster than longbows#all i could find was that recurve range is worse compared to compound bows#which. OBVIOUSLY. compound bows CHEAT.#(said lovingly. ish. if you use a compound more power to you but also Itâs Doing All The Work For You.)#this article was literally all i could find from a couple hoursâ search comparing recurves and longbows#anyway recurves are cool. flanagan why did you do recurves so dirty.#for that matter why are all your women blonde.#(iâm not including brotherband here sorry)#(but also why did it take a spinoff series for him to create a named female character that wasnât a blonde)#(flanagan explain)#god these books have so many problems. truly this is my âi could fix himâ#thank you flanagan for getting me into this special interest. now Tell Me Why You Did It Wrong.#rangers apprentice#anyway if you REALLY want to read about some bangin historical horse archers#look up the parthians :)#specifically how they fucking Decimated an entire roman contingent :)#crassus getting absolutely demolished by mounted archer parthians is definitely my favorite bit of roman trivia

The best way to understand tumblr's strain of antipsychiatry is the many, many times I have seen Freud quotes tagged antipsych
#i dont think there are more than 20 or 30 people on this website who have actually read any anti psychiatry literature#bc literally all the antipsych posts on here i see were critiques of psychiatry BY psychiatrists from the fucking early 1900s#when your definition of anti psychiatry is less radical than freuds you need to not be calling yourself that#not that im anti psychiatry. i like the theory and find it interesting#but it's just something that informs my practice of psychology#bc a lot of the critiques are valid and can be worked into practice. theres a good preprint article i read that basically fixed one#of the big critiques of psychiatry too i can send it to anyone whos interested

Paleolithic Media Catalogue
Hello everyone :) Short story first: When I began brainstorming for my prehistoric story, I started wondering what other prehistoric fiction there is out there. I was not familiar with it and have not seen much. That's when I started my grand literature review and began a search for what fiction exist out there. I wanted to know what kinds of stories are being made with this time period. What are the common themes or recurring ideas (I found lots of humans and dinosaurs works. And time travel). Since I've had a growing collection on my computer, I decided I should keep on enlarging it and put it online. It's nowhere near complete. I'll slowly keep accumulating the collection as I find more. I only have fiction books and comics right now. I still need to work on the film section.
You can access the blog here!
***
As for where I am in my reading, the one's I've finished reading are Earth's Children series (book 1-4. Dropped it afterwards lol. I made a post on with fanart) Dance of the Tiger and it's sequel Singletusk (They were good! I'll upload my review on the blog), and Sisters of the Wolf (It was ok!). I got my hands on The Inheritors and excited to start reading it. I REALLY want to read the Shiva trilogy, but I found no PDF online... and it's out of print :( There is certainly old copies on ebay. And I want to read Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. There seem to be lots of good books out there.
#For whomever might find it useful... I'm doing this#I actually found another huge catalogue by an awesome person called Stephen Trussel#However their site has not been updated since 2016#I've linked their site on my blog when referencing the ENG translation for 'paris before man'#I'll make a paragraph dedicated to that site too#This has gone beyond my initial literature review lol#But for someone writing in this genre.. I've got to get to know it well#Because If I do end up publishing it I KNOW for sure it will be set up against other prehistoric fiction#mainly earth's children series#LITERALLY every book I checked had people in the reviews comparing it to Auel's series. Like it's the blueprint of prehistoric fiction#Like it's 'The Lord of the Rings' of its' genre.#and since it's a graphic novel maybe it will be compared to other comics?? Which I haven't found a lot YET#Emmanuel Roudier's work looks SO GOOD#I say looks because it's in French and I can't read French#I'm tempted to try translating it with what little French I learnt from public school and actually learn French in the process#Mezolith is great but it's not a full story. Just small snippets/short stories#Same with Tiger Lung. It's great. Also very very short. I recommend both.#I have not read the mangas yet. I read the first few chapters of Grashros and it's 100% Shounen stuff so far lol

my top controversial Zim headcanon is that Zim actually performs absurdly well at skool because
1. he's a perfectionist with a compulsive reaction to ANY system of scoring
2. I 100% believe test scores are this guy's forte because he had to become an Invader SOMEHOW and he sure as hell wasn't passing based on the practical
3. He has hyper-advanced alien AI to do his homework for him. like come on.
meanwhile Dib is really only scraping by on raw intelligence and the inherent educational advantage of having a mad scientist father. He doesn't have TIME to study, there's an evil alien he has to stalk and besides, you know what's better than a high school diploma? The Nobel Peace Prize for proving the existence of extraterrestrial life.
#invader zim#zim#dib#zadp#iz posting#natterings#not actually my top controversial headcanon but i believe in working your way up to the cancelable stuff#anyway dib may or may not get more serious with it as he gets older#but at twelve years old i do not believe for a minute this kid gives a fuck about grades handed to him by stupid people#hes probably doing pretty okay at math and any sciences but i dont even want to IMAGINE how he performs on say#literature#he doesnt have time to read a whole BOOK hes trying to save the world here#though naturally if anyone pointed out to him that hey isnt it fucked up the literal alien is doing better in human subjects than you#we'd see a turn around REAL fast#that or hed just spend all his time trying to prove that zims been cheating which#yeah not likely to get him very far

drabbles about the deer imagery in The Secret History (specifically in relation 2 Camilla) because her becoming a deer/believing that she did stuck in my mind (although this post will mostly take Camilla and the other's recollection of events to be as they recount it â if i examine it in it's effect as an incorrect account, that would be in a separate post)
Obviously there's, on a meta level, an irony to it â Camilla and Charles are named to make fun of the Princess Diana scandal that was happening at the time, and so ironically Camilla transforms into an animal sacred to Diana.
There's also a parallel that I think could be interesting to make between Camilla and Taygete, who for anyone unfamiliar, was turned into a deer by Artemis to protect her from Zeus' sexual advances. Although I think that what happened in the Bacchae was concensual sexually, I think it could possible be indicative in Camilla's narrative role as the "wanted"/"desired" one within the greek class â by Charles, Henry, Richard (although he wasnt there) and even Francis, although he wants to be her more so than actually wanting her.
Additionally, outside of how it actually functions within the story, her transformation into a creature associated so closely with innocence, especially in relation to Diana/Artemis' virginity, might perhaps be tied to Richards view of her as this "pure" and "virginal" person â obviously we know this is far from the truth, and he himself learns this later, but I think it definitely ties into this flawed angelic idea of her he so covets.
I think this interpretation ties into the myth of Actaeon (in terms of "deer transformation myths") although its very interesting to me that they different at key points â Camilla, the "virginual" character, is the one transformed, rather than the sexual transgressor (Charles) or the one who introduces miasma (Henry). But, like Actaeon, she is pursued and hunted â which, another key point â Actaeon is pursued and killed by his own hunting dogs, and Charles returns from the ritual with a bite mark, perhaps tying him into the myth thurther?
#sillies sillies#gay people will really write 5 paragraphs of analysis about a book written in the nineties instead of studing#(talking about himself)#~350 words isnt much BUT i dont write much literature analysis 4 myself outside of class#so I'm quite happy with this#feel free 2 add stuff on 𫡠I'm more familiar with Homer's works (and bits of Ovid) than i am wider greek myths#so if im missing any interesting deer transformation myths let me know :D#LOVE carmilla. obviously as flawed as any character but she's so interesting 2 me#both of the twins are honestly. what the fuck was their childhoods like that made them like that#cause. we know bits and pieces about francis and Henry's childhoods#and obviously Richard's#but i feel like we know so little about the twin's...#anyways#the secret history#the kat speaks#camilla macaulay#charles macaulay#francis abernathy#henry winter#richard papen#again not tagging buns cause hes not in here#although i wanna talk about his youth imagery @ some point#he's very Paris 2 me /pos#LOATH henry (ik hes as complex as the rest of them but he just rubs me up the wrong way. dont even hate him 4 the murder) but i really wish#i could hear his opinions on the character of the iliad#WHAT DID HE THINK OF PANDARUS. my boy my love#asshole in my class civ class who's name is very similar 2 henry's called him stupid... arse#he literally ticks every box of the homeric hero whats not to love#anyways. absolutely ESSAY of a post and tags#soz guys

I donât know why this cracked me up so much, but less than five minutes before Zack joins the Nightwatch, some of the most blatantly Nazi shit in this entire show where one of the major themes is fascism, Sheridan asks Zack if he ever studied 20th Century history, World War II. And Zack is just like, âNopeâ. Yeah, Iâll bet you havenât, Zack. Brilliant set up. Absolutely hysterical.

this post is so funny to me because like... no... every gender/sexuality is writing the worst romance imaginable. commercial romance and honestly... indie romance is 99.999% slop. often fun slop, like get me a second bowl of it slop, but... slop.
and, yes, Gender-Norms-Are-Killing-Us-All type slop, too. even in the gay shit. even in the trans shit. even when they're Own Voices written and consulted.
romance is a low barrier to entry type genre that caters even more to wish fulfillment and tropes than other genres and... well... a lot of that stuff is propped up by things like heteronormativity and things adjacent to that
bisexuals and other gay people can't save the genre.... not even the insane ones
like... commercial romance is always gonna fall into... appealing to the widest base of consumers i'm sorry!
#you could literally culminate every single marginalized identit yyou could think of into an author#and there is at least a 50% chance of their work#still being 'oh god... the hteronormatiity of it all'#beacuse so much of our conception of romance is... heteronormative#it reminds me of the proliferation of cozy gay literature#thats literally just like insanely racist or like yearning for the pastoral history (which is still racist so redundant)#or like whatever#and i guess you can say oh thsoe aren't the CRAZY gays#but then the crazy gays are just writing pure smut#or like... genre fiction#not commercial romance#commercial romance is commercial for a reason lmfao

I think gwynriels victim complex phenomenon needs to be studied like it's probably where the projecting into Azriel white-savior and fuckboy made-up personas came from. it's all clearer now...
#acotar#they are like if the boy that screamed wolf didn't stopped lying it's kind of that#i say it before and i reiterate: they are this worked up for a ship that literally was made BEFORE acosf was fully out and the BC wasn't#known yet... let that sink in#if book text directly is contradicting your words. the characters are. the casual readers are. the readers before you are and now published#articles (made by people professional in their field and probably with their own degrees too) are saying what you think MIGHT be very wrong#idk girl i would think a little of why is that instead of calling someone a misogynist for DARING to tell âno ellen that didn't happenedâ#everyone have biases even elriels that also had studied literature will have it but the diff is that no one is using that to proof how a SA#victim is mated and gonna have a quick heal of her trauma for your book bf.... AAAaanyways this the last post i gonna make about this#*btw i think that user mentioned being harassed which of course hope she stays away from those that insult her and don't let them get to he#but yeh the degree situation was unserious and silly. no need for anyone to get mad or hate anyone for that just laugh and let's move on

One of my least favorite parts of how JRO wrote Optimus is that he wanted so badly to continue his dark and gritty world building making the Autobots problematic, but evidently couldn't reconcile this with Optimus being a Heroic Paragon, so instead he leaned way too hard into "oh Prowl was the one who did this and it was behind Optimus' back" which if anything I think makes Optimus look worse, not better. Because then it's like, okay I know Optimus trusted Prowl a lot as his friend but you CANNOT TELL ME that over the course of 4 million years, Optimus as the leader of the Autobot army who literally would have access to 99.9% of all the records they produce, would never notice or question where some of these odd/inconsistent details were pointing. It just seems really inconsistent with how a real military would actually function, especially regarding Optimus' character, who is incredibly thorough and responsible and wouldn't neglect to keep up with all the details of his army.
Hell, Optimus knows who the Wreckers are and had them on call for tricky operations when he needed them (Stormbringer) so he's literally not at all ignorant of/averse to the use of special wartime units composed of dubious individuals. He's the fucking commander of an entire army, of course he knows that War Is Hell (TM) and no one's hands are clean. That's not even getting into all the stuff he got up to in phase 2/3, I mean everything from the annexation of Earth to OP breaking humans out of prison against Council orders shows that Optimus is no stranger to immoral and/or unlawful means.
It also leads to a lot of annoying fanon where people write Optimus (sometimes unintentionally, sometimes not) as like some sort of ignorant fool who's unaware of the machinations of his own army or has some sort of naivetĂŠ of "b-but we can't use bad tactics against the enemy! I would never condone the use of morally gray means in war!" No, IDW Optimus knows perfectly well all of the bullshit he's enacted/condoned for the sake of trying to win the war. Some stuff is definitely out of character for him and was only machinated because of Prowl, but I think this fandom REALLY underestimates Optimus' personal agency/responsibility as the commander of a whole ass army and ESPECIALLY underestimates Optimus' capacity to condone morally gray Bullshit Of War while still being a good person individually as well as, comparatively, the lesser evil compared to Megatron/the Decepticons.
Anyways what I'm saying is JRO may be a good writer but he's really hesitant to make Optimus morally gray and does some asspulls sometimes to justify most of the bad things the Autobots did as "Optimus just didn't know," and since the majority of the IDW1 fandom only reads JRO's stuff they go running with this premise of ignorant/uninformed Optimus when there's evidence elsewhere in canon to show that Optimus is, in fact, very highly aware of the bullshit he's allowed "for the greater good" and the only stuff he was "unaware of" was the stuff he would literally never agree to the ethics of, like bombing innocent neutrals disguised as Decepticons to get them to join the Autobots.
#squiggposting#idw op love#i feel like part of the issue is that for a franchise whose entire premise is war#i feel like a lot of this fanbase. hasnt actually read a lot about war (fictional or nonfictional)#bc a lot of ppl here really seem to struggle with reconciling OP as a good person and OP#as a war leader who had bad things happen under his rule#and bc they dont know much about war in fiction or IRL they treat this as like. one extreme or the other?#when like if ur someone whos read a lot of war literature it's very easy to comprehend both of these as being true#like idk i think the 'OP was ignorant' defense isnt even how being a commander works#but it's also a cop out to make OP less interesting/morally gray than he could be#like idk how to explain that war is an inherently corrupt/immoral institution where in pretty much all of history#the act of waging war in itself is a moral compromise. war is literally about killing more of the other side than they do you#you are treating human life (and society and gov and the environment) as tools for victory#no matter how righteous your cause is or if you follow rules of engagement you literally are going to do bad things#so like this idea the fanbase seems to have where they like. want OP to be sheltered/ignorant of these realities#is SO not how reality works and wouldnt ever be in character for like 99% of optimi#i'm still trying to pull together my thoughts on this sorry the tags are so incoherent
