The Joys of Being a Lesbian Gamer
I'm a lesbian, and I love video games. I know what you're thinking: "But aren't most gamers guys?" Well, yes, they are. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of us lesbians out there who love to game.
In fact, I think being a lesbian gamer has its own unique advantages. For one thing, we're used to being outnumbered. So when we do find ourselves in a gaming community, we're not afraid to speak up and make ourselves heard. We're also not afraid to challenge the status quo.
Another advantage of being a lesbian gamer is that we have a built-in understanding of the importance of representation. We know what it's like to be underrepresented in the media, so we're always looking for games that feature LGBTQ characters. And when we find them, we celebrate them!
Of course, there are also some challenges to being a lesbian gamer. For one thing, we sometimes have to deal with homophobia and sexism from other gamers. But we're tough cookies, and we're not going to let that stop us from enjoying our hobby.
So if you're a lesbian gamer, I want you to know that you're not alone. There are plenty of us out there, and we're all here to support each other. So keep gaming, and keep being awesome!

#pride #lgbt #lgbtq+ #lgbtrights #lgbtqrights #lgbtqjustice #lgbtqfight #lgbtqvisibility #lgbtqacceptance "I'M PROUD OF MY GAY SON", Dick Ashworth, Christopher Street Liberation Day, June 30, 1974. Niecy Nash-Betts, the effervescent actress and entertainer, is preparing to grace the stage at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. This return to the organization, having hosted the show in 2021, comes as Nash-Betts embraces life with renewed joy and self-acceptance. Following her marriage to musician Jessica Betts in 2020, Nash-Betts has become a powerful advocate for LGBTQ visibility and living authentically. Ahead of the awards ceremony, where she'll receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, Nash-Betts spoke with THR about love, navigating new realities, and her perspective on representation in Hollywood. Living Authentically and Receiving Recognition When asked about her reaction to the GLAAD Award, Nash-Betts exudes genuine humility. She emphasizes living life on her terms, prioritizing self-acceptance and personal fulfillment over external validation. However, she acknowledges the honor inherent in receiving recognition for simply being herself and living authentically. Love as a Catalyst for Growth Reflecting on her marriage to Jessica Betts, Nash-Betts describes a love that feels "richer" and more fulfilling than ever before. She emphasizes the profound sense of being "completely seen" and the positive impact this love has on all aspects of her life. She sheds light on the concept of "custom" love, defying traditional labels and embracing the unique connection she shares with Jessica. Breaking Barriers and Embracing Love Openly Nash-Betts readily admits that her past relationships were exclusively heterosexual. Yet, upon meeting Jessica, she embraced the unexpected shift in her life with open arms. She highlights the decision to celebrate her love publicly, becoming the first same-sex couple on the cover of Essence magazine and portraying lovers on network television. For Nash-Betts, this wasn't about seeking attention; it was about living authentically and defying societal expectations. Early Encounters with LGBTQ Representation While pinpointing the exact moment she encountered LGBTQ representation in pop culture proves challenging, Nash-Betts recalls discussions surrounding a specific episode of "Maude" during her childhood. She observes the evolution of societal attitudes and the importance of visibility, particularly within the Black community. She recounts the positive response she received after coming out, with many people feeling a sense of identification and shared experience. On the Debate of Representation in Hollywood Regarding the ongoing debate about casting choices in Hollywood, Nash-Betts adopts a pragmatic approach. She prioritizes artistic expression and believes talent should supersede labels. She acknowledges the contributions of LGBTQ actors who portray straight characters and argues that the same freedom should be extended in the reverse. A Life Filled with Recognition As a decorated actress, Nash-Betts has accumulated a collection of awards. She describes their placement throughout her home, a testament to her successful career. From a dedicated media room to prominent displays in the family room and even her closet, these awards serve as a reminder of her artistic achievements. FAQs Q: How did Niecy Nash-Betts react to receiving the GLAAD Media Awards honor? A: Nash-Betts expressed surprise and humility, emphasizing that she prioritizes living authentically over external validation. Q: How has her marriage to Jessica Betts impacted her life? Queering Classics
Hurricane Diane is a co-production between New York Theatre Workshop and WP Theater. The following piece is written by guest contributor Caity Cook, Artistic Intern at WP.
Tumblr media
For theatre artists, retellings of classic work can be rich opportunities to open a dialogue with the theatrical canon and put their twist on a familiar story. These retellings can range from attempts to capture the staging of a bygone era to contemporary spins that update the stories for modern audiences.
For queer artists, as well as for artists of color or artists from other historically marginalized groups, these retellings take on a particular political resonance. We often consider the enduring strength of classic stories to stem from their universality and ability to “reveal human truths.” However, when we stop to consider the fact that these works often center on predominantly white, heterosexual men or couples, this universality becomes problematized. Reframing classic narratives through a queer lens serves the dual purpose of correcting the absence of queer people in the originals and asserting that queer experiences, not just heterosexual ones, can have universal appeal.
Tumblr media
Queer retellings of classic works appear in all disciplines and genres, from YA novels to television series to plays. The myth of Dionysus (or Bacchus), which Madeleine George reworks in Hurricane Diane, is a story particularly ripe for queering. Dionysus is the god of fruitfulness, and is particularly celebrated as the god of wine and ecstasy. The god found particular resonance with women, and his followers, referred to as bacchites, celebrated lavish festivals called bacchanalia in his honor. This focus on women set the stage for George to re-cast the Greek god as a butch woman, thereby calling into question the idea of the male figure as the epitome of seduction and the heterosexual dynamic between the god and their followers as the peak of ecstasy and desire. In doing so, a group of people excluded from traditional interpretations of the classic myth are able to see themselves reflected and honored in the story.
In VICE magazine, journalist Lindsay King-Miller asserts that though queer retellings of classic stories are not the only way that queer people should be visible in media, they’re an extremely powerful one:
Of course, queer retellings are only a small facet of a larger movement toward LGBTQ representation and visibility in every corner of art and culture, but they're a crucial one. We'll never stop telling new stories and exploring underrepresented aspects of the human experience, but retelling old stories from a queer point of view adds something unique: the recognition that the stories that connect us across cultures and generations belong to all of us, LGBTQ people included.

Caity Cook is a New York-based theatre artist and arts administrator. She has worked with non-profit theatres around the country, including with Manhattan Theatre Club, Proctors Theatre, San Francisco Playhouse, and Great Lakes Theatre. She is also a writer, critic, and dramaturg. Caity received her B.A. from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
