Pyroraptor olympius

Status: Extinct

Time and Place: Around 72 million years ago, in the Campanian of the Late Cretaceous

Pyroraptor is known from the La Boucharde locality in France, the Vitoria and La Posa Formations in Spain, and potential locations in the UK

Physical Description: Pyroraptor is a poorly known raptor, based on a few fossil scraps found around the late Cretaceous of Europe. Portions of the foot, arms, and some teeth are known from Pyroraptor, none preserved very well. It had the sickle second toe claw of other raptors, and it seems to have been fairly lightweight and small - probably no longer than 1.4 meters, though that is of course an estimate. Other than that, we know very little about its appearance - we don’t even know if it was a specialized sort of raptor like in the Dromaeosaurine, Microraptorine, or other groups - except for that it would have been very fluffy, with wings on its arms and a tail fan on its tail.

Diet: As a raptor, it is most likely that Pyroraptor fed upon meat, probably small animals such as lizards, mammals, and turtles.

Behavior: Pyroraptor would have been a very active dinosaur, spending most of its time hopping and stalking around the rivers and beaches in its island environment. Like other raptors, it wouldn’t have been a pursuit predator, but rather an ambush one: it would have waited for prey to appear, and then pounced on it, using rapid flaps of its wings to stay balanced on top of the struggling prey. This technique, called raptor prey restraint, is still seen in living raptors today. Pyroraptor would have also been able to run up vertical surfaces, such as trees and cliffs, using flaps of its wings to gain lyft up the surface. Then, it would have been able to catch food on the run! Other than that, Pyroraptor probably wasn’t very social, based on fossil evidence from other raptors - that being said, it would have taken care of its young, and probably stayed in small family groups during this process.

Ecosystem: Pyroraptor lived in the Late Cretaceous of Western Europe, which was a series of islands sitting in a shallow ocean - sort of like the Bahamas today. These ecosystems were easy to travel between, utilizing rafting and other forms of impromptu sea travel, so the animals on them tended to be similar to each other. Pyroraptor itself lived with many turtles, snakes, sharks, and gars; as well as Eusuchians such as Musturzabalsuchus and Acynodon. There was some sort of large Azhdarchid pterosaur, too - currently called Azhdarcho, though that’s a questionable assignment. As for other dinosaurs, there were Abelisaurids there, Titanosaurs like Lirainosaurus, Nodosaurids like Struthiosaurus, the Ornithopod Rhabdodon, and another raptor called Richardoestesia, and the protobird Gargantuavis!

Other: Pyroraptor was named as such because it was discovered after the occurence of a forest fire. Since so little is known about this dinosaur, there isn’t much more to be said about its phylogenetics or history of discovery! It is rather famous for having been featured in the 2003 documentary Dinosaur Planet, though given its poorly preserved nature, the wisdom in that choice of star is mildly suspect.

Hendricken’s Hanson named NFHS National Swim Coach of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Longtime Bishop Hendricken swim coach Dave Hanson was among the 23 high school coaches from across the country selected as 2019 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.

The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports – one for boys and one for girls – that are not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a spirit coach as a separate award category. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award. This year’s awards recognize coaches for the 2018-19 school year.

Recipients of this year’s national awards for boys sports are: Glenn Cecchini, baseball, Lake Charles (Louisiana) Alfred M. Barbe High School; J.R. Holmes, basketball, Bloomington (Indiana) South High School; Karl Koonce, cross country, Pearcy (Arkansas) Lake Hamilton High School; Terry Curtis, football, Mobile (Alabama) UMS-Wright Preparatory School; James Orcutt, golf, North Platte (Nebraska) High School; Terry Michler, soccer, St. Louis (Missouri) Christian Brothers College High School; David Hanson, swimming and diving, Warwick (Rhode Island) Bishop Hendricken Catholic High School; David Fredette, tennis, Armada (Michigan) High School; William “Bill” Thorn, track and field, Fairburn (Georgia) Landmark Christian School; and James Matney, wrestling, Paintsville (Kentucky) Johnson Central High School.

The recipients of the 2019 NFHS national awards for girls sports are: Jack Gayle, swimming and diving, Snellville (Georgia) Brookwood High School; Cherry Roberds, tennis, Miami (Arizona) High School; Desmond Dunham, track and field, St. John’s (District of Columbia) College High School; Valorie McKenzie, volleyball, Scottsdale (Arizona) Horizon High School; Sherri Anthony, basketball, Ponte Vedra (Florida) Nease High School; Dave Van Sickle, cross country, Phoenix (Arizona) Xavier College Preparatory; Dick Bliss, golf, Hopkinton (Massachusetts) High School; Carol Rainson-Rose, lacrosse, Northport (New York) High School; Meredith Messer, soccer, Rockport (Maine) Camden Hills Regional High School; and Deborah Schwartz, softball, Toms River (New Jersey) Donovan Catholic High School.

The recipient of the National Coach of the Year Award for spirit is Stephanie Blackwell of Bixby (Oklahoma) High School. Steven DeAngelis, a cross country skiing coach at Readfield (Maine) Maranacook Community High School, was chosen in the “other” category for boys sports, and Lois Emshoff, a badminton coach at Chandler (Arizona) High School, was chosen in the “other” category for girls sports.

The NFHS has a contact in each state who is responsible for selecting deserving coach award recipients. This person often works with the state coaches’ association in his or her respective state. He or she contacts the potential state award recipients to complete a coach profile form that requests information regarding the coach’s record, membership in and affiliation with coaching and other professional organizations, involvement with other school and community activities and programs, and coaching philosophy. To be approved as an award recipient and considered for sectional and national coach of the year consideration, this profile form must be completed by the coach or designee and then approved by the executive director (or designee) of the state athletic/activities association.

The next award level after state coach of the year is sectional coach of the year. The NFHS is divided into eight geographical sections. They are as follows: Section 1 – Northeast (CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VT); Section 2 – Mideast (DE, DC, KY, MD, OH, PA, VA, WV); Section 3 – South (AL, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN); Section 4 – Central (IL, IN, IA, MI, WI); Section 5 – Midwest (KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD); Section 6 – Southwest (AR, CO, NM, OK, TX); Section 7 – West (AZ, CA, HI, NV, UT); and Section 8 – Northwest (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY).

The NFHS Coaches Association has an advisory committee composed of a chair and eight sectional representatives. The sectional committee representatives evaluate the state award recipients from the states in their respective sections and select the best candidates for the sectional award in each sport category. The NFHS Coaches Association Advisory Committee then considers the sectional candidates in each sport, ranks them according to a point system, and determines a national winner for each of the 20 sport categories, the spirit category and two “other” categories.

A total of 857 coaches will be recognized this year with state, sectional and national awards.

Chief Petty Officer David Goggins (born February 17, 1975) is an ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, public speaker, and author. He is a retired Navy SEAL member who served in the Iraq War. His first memoir, Can't Hurt Me, was released in 2019 and a sequel Never Finished in 2022. He was born to Trunnis and Jackie Goggins. In the gap between his discharge from the Air Force and enlisting in the Navy, he worked as a pest control fumigator. He applied to join the Air Force Pararescue and was accepted into training after failing his ASVAB twice. He had been diagnosed with sickle cell trait and was removed from training. He then completed Air Force Tactical Air Control Party training, and worked as a TACP, when he left the Air Force. He graduated from BUD/S training. He received the NEC 5326 as a Combatant Swimmer (SEAL), entitled to wear the Special Warfare insignia also known as "SEAL Trident". He was assigned to SEAL Team 5. In his 20-year military career, he served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He entered the San Diego One Day, a 24-hour ultramarathon. He completed the Las Vegas Marathon in a time that qualified him for the Boston Marathon. He entered the Hurt-100 in Hawaii. He was invited to 2006 Badwater-135, where he finished 5th overall. He competed in the Ultraman World Championships Triathlon. He participated in the Furnace Creek-508. He achieved his best finish at the Badwater-135 by placing 3rd overall. He competed in the Badwater-135 in 2013 and finished 18th. He competed in another 14 ultra-endurance races, with top-five finishes in nine of them. He set a course record at the 48-hour national championships. He was named a "Hero of Running" by Runner's World. He won the Infinitus 88k in 12 hours. He won the Music City Ultra 50k, and Strolling Jim 40 Miler. He ran the Moab 240 ultramarathon, placing 2nd. He is the only person to ever complete Army Ranger School, Air Force Tactical Control Party Training, and Navy Seal Training. Each of these training programs is nearly impossible to complete. Stories to tell relatively deep & longg I'm 17 atm & I have sickle cell, which comes with its many complications and challenges ofc. Recently i've been fairly ill, wasn't sure what was going on etc but I was in the hospital from Thursday till Saturday. Discharged on a Saturday and on Sunday, I was just home planning how I was going back to school but I started feeling kinda achy and weak so I was like naa i'd go tomorrow. The ache was just kind of persistent it was so uncomfortable, couldn't lie on one side or sit a certain way, that kind of thing. Then it became a struggle, couldn't lie on any side or sit in any way without feeling that pain (decided to now take some medicine & eat) I then decided to eat and take some meds, then I waited for the meds to kick in. I waited about 30 mins and in that time everything went from 0 - 100. This pain, it was excruciating, breathing in made it worse so ofc that then caused some breathing difficulties. i tell my aunty and she calls an ambulance. WOW like I had never been in so much pain. I wont lie at a point I wasn't sure if i was seeing the next day, it was acc crazy. A friend, who i'd been talking to about the pain all day, then facetimed me and I just couldn't look at her it was all too much for me. I was weeping, seething, cursing, all sorts and my aunties and grandma were just praying. I'm that kind of person that likes to be the one to say 'everything is alright'. I'm the one who gives assurance and doesn't worry so much but to then be the one people worry about, it really gets to me. My family members panicking, my friends worrying, that all crushes me. Anyways, the ambulance comes over and i'm now in the situation where I have to explain and describe the pain, explain what happened, give personal information, breathe, explain again, comply, calm down, answer all sorts of other questions, breathe etc, ALL this while in pain and this is without exaggeration. Injected and what not the pain starts to die down and we're on our way to the hospital. Ah and ofc with a Nigerian family the calls start coming in, the texts and the 'i'll meet you guys there' 😂 but that just makes you appreciate family so much more. But the thing that gets to me is my mummy crying, just the thought alone is soo painful. As all this was happening my mum was in Nigeria so imagine, your child is so many miles away, going through all this and you cant do a lot. Hearing her so upset over the phone was awful. My brother as well had messaged me when I was first admitted (hes usually v reserved with things like this) and he actually asked me if I was dying and he was still in doubt after I told him I wasn't. I refrain from telling him when i'm ill so he just doesn't worry. We've already lost our dad so for him to think he was losing me, it honestly broke my heart and (if you can't tell) I am one of those people that are really protective about family so it was hard for me. Overall there's nothing that got to me more than that pain. I've never ever felt that much pain in my life as per I had no thoughts. My mind wasn't a working thing. It was a matter of this is here and now, partially because you don't even realise that you cant breathe or that there are ppl around you, the pain is just so gripping its crazyy. You close your eyes so tight just hoping the pain can subside, you grip the closest thing to you just as a reaction to that pain getting stronger and spreading, there are tears after tears but after a while you forget they're still streaming, its just that other form of release. But when your eyes roll back thats when you know that pain is the one controlling your body, it has literally told your conscious mind to foh. To be paralysed by pain is surely the worst thing i've ever experienced. To just think that my thoughts and actions had been replaced by pain alone naa it was truly fucked up and I can't even wish it on the devil. Glory be to God :) I am alive and well and by his stripes i am healed. My personal motto still stands, this is my year and nothing can stop me la gbara olorun. I'm back at home and as cozy as ever but I'd also like to send prayers out to a few friends i made when i was there, beautiful ppl with a lot to live for. I'm 18 years old and passed my driving test on the 30th September 2010. I don't have a car because I cant afford the insurance. I'm working full time. I found a nice little car, a 2001 RENAULT CLIO, 1.2 16V 3dr Hatchback. I used a price comparison site to get a basic idea of what the insurance would be on it - and using my real own details and it was 5993. So I messed around a bit and added my mum as a second/extra driver. The price crashed down to 3,153. The option to add another driver was still there so I added my dad too and the price is now 2,617 - much more in my price range. I called them in and was like look at this and what do you think and they both agreed that there was something wrong with it and there would be a catch somewhere but I disagree. Hi. On April first, my neighbor hit my dad's car in our neighborhood. Our garages are facing each other, and my dad was going backwards to get out of our garage. Note: This episode was filmed before episode 10.

Abby at pyramid- "I keep telling you guys, you have been given an amazing opportunity. You've been hand-selected to go across the country and learn a new number each week and do these competitions. And you are not stepping up to the plate. I want to see energy, enthusiasm, fun. If you don't want to do it, there's probably a hundred other kids that would LOVE to be in your shoes right now. So I need to see motivation. I want you to want to win. This is my reputation on the line. It's my name, but, by now, it's also your names."

Note: Abby is talking to the girls about being on the show.

Mackenzie vt- "I'm a little scared to dance in the group number. I don't want to mess up."

Christi outside studio with moms- "Everybody sucks. That was the message. You all sucked. But I want to see enthusiasm." Sidenote: The message was actually Be Appreciative Of The Opportunity And Embrace It And Give It Your All.

Note: Melissa announces she's leaving the girls with Abby and going away with her boyfriend (her husband in 2013).

Christi vt- "At rehearsal I noticed Chloe's sort of, not her regular self. I can see written all over her face that something's wrong. She just didn't have that same Chloe passion that she normally does. I talked to her and she tells me that she doesn't want to dance anymore. That's very hard for me to hear because I think Chloe's extremely talented and I would hate to see her give up on something that she has such an amazing talent for. But on the other hand, as a mother, where do I draw the line? You know, when is enough enough for her?"

Chloe at rehearsal with Christi- "I'm tired of dancing."

Chloe vt- "Sometimes I just don't want to dance. I mean, I love dance, I'm tired. I need a break."

Note: Chloe's lying on the floor after finishing her number and Abby walks in. "Sickle feet!" she says and keeps going into the other rehearsal room.

Abby and the moms- "Let's start with Nia. Work on your feet. How many times have we gone over this? It is like talking to that brick wall. She has to try harder."

Holly vt- "Abby's word choices are poor at best. I think when she refers to Nia as a brick wall, that's incredibly demoralizing and is not productive."

Holly to Abby- "As a teacher it's frustrating when another teacher will say to a kid to try harder. That means nothing to the kid because they're just repeating the same mistake over and over again."

Abby vt- "Holly is an educator herself and she always compares us. But it's not really apple to apple, it's like apple to orange. And I believe sometimes she wants special treatment for Nia. Like, but you have to teach her this way, you have to teach her that way. I'm Abby Lee Miller. I don't have to do anything."

Abby to Christi- "Chloe. She needs to work on her confidence. She still second guesses herself."

Christi- "That's how Chloe is. I mean, that's something we need to work on."

Abby vt- "Chloe is a beautiful dancer. She looks great. And when you see her in class, you pick her out, your eyes go to her. But when it gets down to the end of an audition and there's like three or four girls left, she chokes. She starts to second guess herself. And that's definitely coming from her mother."

Abby to Kelly- "Brooke. I am disappointed in the group routines with the ability to comprehend. You saw it yesterday. If I was their mother I would have crawled into a hole. She's 13 years old and was not picking up quickly. They're slow. They don't pick up quick."

Kelly- "Walk through it step-by-step with them. We're not trying to be Maddie and Chloe. Neither one of my kids--"

Abby- "But why do want your kids to be mediocre?"

Kelly- "Because that's the way my kids are. And I love them the way they are."

Abby- "I disagree. I disagree."

Kelly- "They're not number one. We don't care. They're my kids. I love them."

Abby vt- "I just don't get Kelly. But you know what? SMACK their heads together, wake them up, tell them to get on the ball, quit playing around, invest in this like it's their future. This is real life. You have talented beautiful children. Make. Them. Own. It. Quit saying they can be mediocre. You don't mean that! Who wants a mediocre kid?"

Abby- "I want more. I want more. I want more."

Kelly- "12 hours a day at dance and 8 hours a day at school, I mean, my God, they're kids! I'm not having my kids have a nervous breakdown because you want them to be the best."

Abby- "Yeah but your kid just won another title."

Kelly- "Ab, would you like her crown back? Cause you can have it."

Abby- "We'll have to talk about that."

Kelly- "Take the crown and shove it up your ass! Cause we don't want it!"

Abby- "You can go."

Abby at rehearsal- "Nia, I don't want to start the day out screaming at you. Think about what you are doing. Do it right."

Chloe vt- "I'm doing a duet with Maddie. And we're both swans. And I'm the black one. Usually I'm the, goody two shoes, I guess, so I'm excited to be a little on the bad side this week."

Note: Abby brings the girls to a lake and pulls Chloe aside- "Chloe, your mom told me that you had a breakdown. You told her you didn't want to dance anymore."

Chloe- "I just feel like it's a lot of rehearsal and cause we're going from early in the morning to late at night, and we're learning new dances, and I just feel like it's a lot."

Abby- "Well she thinks that you don't ever want to dance again."

Chloe- "I- I just told my mom I wanted to take a little break for a while."

Abby- "Well, that's okay. Everybody needs a break once in a while. But just remember, I have a whole long list of people that want to be in this group. Of people who want to do duets with Maddie. You're my FIRST choice. And I really think you were BORN to dance."

Chloe- "Do you think I would be able to make it on Broadway or become a Rockette someday?"

Abby- "ABSOLUTELY! But the confidence level needs to be over the top. Everything is possible. Everything. And if you keep listening to me, and do what I tell you."

Chloe vt- "Abby told me that I have the potential to be on Broadway. And what she says to me and what she thinks is pretty important to me cause she's my dance teacher."

Note: Maddie and Mackenzie's father Kurt joins them at the bowling alley.

Note: Kelly in one studio while on the other side of the shut doors are Abby, Gianna & Maddie. Kelly talking to... the camera? the unnamed guest choreographer?

Kelly- "I mean, why is there two teachers in there that know what my kids can do, both working with Maddie. But this is why Maddie wins and my kids don't."

Note: Gianna teaches the actual choreography and Abby critiques and inputs.

Abby vt- "I had a rehearsal coach in there with them just to kind of guide them through some things. Paige and Brooke have never done a duet so I wanted one of the other dance instructors to work with them on some double tricks and what they can do holding hands. All I wanted to do was give them something to do while I finished up with Maddie."

Kelly- "The world needs to see why Maddie wins."

Note: Maddie can hear everything Kelly is saying.

Abby vt- "Some children are a difficult to work with, and some children are a joy to work with."

Kelly- "My kids are in here with someone who they just met two weeks ago!"

Abby vt- "Kelly totally flipped. She was out of line. She was rude and disrepectful. And I could hear every word she was saying."

Abby- "Kelly! Do you REALLY think that Maddie can't work with a choreographer she met two weeks ago?"

Kelly- "I think there's no reason for you to have two of you in there and mine in here with someone who doesn't even know what leg they kick on."

Abby- "No, he's supposed to be choreographing."

Kelly- "Then let him choreograph Maddie. That sure as hell will never happen!" "We'll get 10th place. Maddie obviously will get first. And so will their duet."

Abby- "Kelly. Come in here."

Kelly (opens doors and enters)- "What?"

Abby- "I have no problem. We would be more than happy to do their number but you have to wait."

Kelly- "One of you two should be helping him! You can SURELY teach Maddie yourself! But NO. Maddie's the priority so both of the main teachers work here!" Storming out she talks directly to Maddie- "But Maddie, you can go and win HONEY!"

Abby vt- "And it went right back to being jealous of the eight year old Maddie."

Kelly vt- "I'm done with it. I'm done. My kids, I don't care if they ever dance again. And Maddie can win again this week! And the world can think she's fabulous. Cause my kids are going to enjoy themselves at the pool."

Note: Kelly was 100% correct: Most of the world DOES think Maddie is fabulous, and she didn't care that they (Brooke and Paige) never danced again after they left the show.

Chloe vt- "When you talk about the pressure between me and Maddie, it's kind of different, but not really different. There's pressure on Maddie because she's won all season long. And there's a lot of pressure on me because I have to prove that I can do it as well."

Note: Before Chloe does her solo Maddie kisses her then wipes off the lipstick from her cheek.

Note: Chloe is wearing the costume from the solo 'Different Bodies' in episode 7.

Chloe vt- "I was just upset and... confused why I did that. I just cried. I guess everyone cries when they freeze on stage."

Maddie vt- "I won another crown. I'm lucky. I have nine crowns now. And they don't really fit on my shelf, so I'm gonna ask my mom to build another shelf."

Note: In their custom-built mansion in Philadelphia there is a climate-controlled room for all of Maddie's awards and achievements that Melissa has said they call "the vault".

Abby vt- "Paige and Brooke weren't ready. If they hadn't left rehearsal yesterday, they would have nailed that number. But instead? Mediocre."

Abby vt- "Maddie and Chloe have had several duets but this new duet was a little edgier. And Chloe looked gorgeous. She was evil. She was sophisticated. She just was STUNNING. I think this was Chloe's opportunity to redeem herself in front of this panel of judges, so she went out there like gang-busters and they just knocked one out of the park. It was AMAZING."

Abby to girls in dressing room- "If the tops come up, do not freak. The judges have seen it all. Believe me, they're all in show business. You seen one boob you've seen them all."

Note: Maddie listening at the door to Abby and her dad verbally fight. Kurt- "I will do everything possible for my daughter to leave your studio next year."

Note: Abby in interview if she was worried about Kurt's removing Maddie from her studio- "Maddie left California when we were finished shooting. She left California at the end of the shoot on a Wednesday. The next day, Thursday at 9:30AM, she was in ballet class at my studio and hasn't missed a lesson since."

Abby vt- "They won the whole thing! I am so proud of my girls. This number won EVERYTHING. They were the highest score in the entire competition. And nobody is going to forget the name Abby Lee Dance Company."
