Hard To Let Go
March 9, 1907
President Roosevelt has the pig of Corporate Interests (A useful creature but perverse) tied by one leg and hits it to keep it running; Shaw and Foraker watch.
The caption reads: 'It may be hard for the president to turn over his job to a successor when his time is up'.
Roosevelt greatly enjoyed being president, and it was continually rumored that he would run again. Shaw and Foraker were two potential candidates who had begun working to run for the office.

Send ✨ for a screenshot associated with magic or aether. - for Thea! I miss them!
She had a way of embroidering her life with stars.
L.M. Montgomery, "Old Man Shaw's Girl" (Chronicles of Avonlea)
Anthea spent quite some time trying to figure out what their strength was in so they could go traveling with the boys but was unsuccessful in other pursuits until they, in a moment of panic, enacted a barrier of healing and protection with little thought. They soon developed a specialization utilizing what would in the future be known as dynamis.
While Anthea has a natural high aptitude for aether, they also had the unconscious ability to manipulate dynamis and its the reason why the Elpis flower came to be and why none of their creations were ever the same or why things had a habit of changing with the smallest single stray thought. They never learned of this as the one person to be the most knowledgeable on the subject matter had pestered them with so many questions about the Elpis flower Anthea took to steering clear if possible as they had nothing to offer.
The outfit that Anthea wears was actually designed by Deimos in preparation for the day they would be able to go out on their adventures. He tried to keep it as robe like as possible while allowing for freedom of movement, sandals to better feel the earth around them, and the diadem was something he made himself using some of the flower braiding techniques he first taught them not long after becoming the official Azem successor. The globe was something that Anthea created but could never get to work until Emet and Hyth stepped in and determined that they were drawing some power from the upper most aether currents making a glass that could easily look to the heavens. (In bird parent au this is something that Anthea and Meteion use eventually to check in with her sisters since their connection was severed with input from Hermes. Before that though it was used to simply take in the night sky and always had Meteion entranced and become more comfortable with the vastness of it)

Alexxxxxx thanks for asking 😘
133. A book that you came across randomly and fell in love with
This is such a good one and I have to think, since I find most of my books now through Goodreads or professional reviews while ordering for work. Hm....
I'm gonna go with this one, mostly because I can't remember how or where I first heard about it (also I fucking love it)
Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw
This book is so unique. It has the flavor of fan fiction in the BEST possible way, and what I mean by that is that the characters and their relationships take center stage. There is an interesting plot (a mystery, even!) at the heart of this cozy supernatural novel, but really it's secondary to how much time you'll want to spend with Dr. Greta Hellsing and her circle of friends, human, vamp, and otherwise. There are sequels that I love at least as much, and I just want to move into Ruthven's London house and stay there forever.
95. Your favourite coming of age novel
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Always, always this one.

1, 4, 9, And 16 for the book asks? :D <3
Thank you, Magpie <3<3
a book that is close to your heart:
Just one?? :'O Well, the most recent ones I've re-read are Middlemarch (George Eliot) and Anne of the Island (L.M. Montgomery). I liked Middlemarch when I first read it, but I loved it the second time around. And Anne of the Island is a forever favourite.
a poetry book that reads like a story:
I haven't read many poetry books in the past few years, actually, so I can't really answer this one..... Most recently I've read Luci Shaw (from her Green Earth collection) and Wendell Berry (his Sabbath poems), both of whom I would highly recommend!! Many of their poems talk about the grandeur of God and the beauty in His creation, and both of them make me want to start writing poetry again.
your favourite book of 2020:
Great Expectations (Charles Dickens)
Jack Frost: The End Becomes the Beginning (William Joyce)
Mansfield Park (Jane Austen)
Leave it to Psmith (P.G. Wodehouse)
Guards! Guards! (Terry Pratchett)
There are five favourites on this list because 2020 was a really good reading year. These are books that 1) I read for the first time in 2020, and 2) began, strengthened, or ended a reading journey. Great Expectations ignited a new interest in Dickens (I went on to read two of his other books in 2020, and completely fell in love with David Copperfield this year!!). Jack Frost is the last book in Joyce's Guardians of Childhood series (which was loosely adapted into the Rise of the Guardians movie). (I've been waiting for the last installment since high school. It was not what I expected at all, but I thought it was a pretty good conclusion to the series.) I read a number of Austen books for the first time in 2020, and was expecting to dislike Mansfield Park after hearing a Lot about it, but ended up Absolutely Loving it. Leave it to Psmith was my introduction to the Psmith series (and is still my favourite of the bunch). And Guards! Guards! started me on a Discworld rampage.
a book you’d recommend to your younger self:
I think I should've started on Wodehouse and Pratchett a LOT sooner, to be honest!!!

These 1923 Copyrighted Works Enter the Public Domain in 2019
“I’m free! I’m free!”
For the first time in twenty years, as the Atlantic points out, a whole year’s worth of copyrighted works will enter the public domain in the U.S. on January 1, 2019. Under the terms of the Sonny Bono Copyright Act, works first published in 1923 will enter the public domain, meaning anyone can re-publish them, or chop them up and use them in other projects, without asking permission or paying the old rights holders. You can record new versions of the musical compositions; you can show the movies for a profit; you can even remake them. Amazon can sell you the ebook and keep all the money, and Project Gutenberg can give you the ebook for free. The Atlantic has a short list; we have a longer one below.
You can even make new copyrighted works based on the old works—the way Disney made all its cartoons based on public-domain fairy tales—and people can’t copy any of the new parts you include. (That’s why anyone can make movie about the fairy tale of Snow White and the seven dwarves, but only Disney can make new things where the dwarves are named Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Happy, Bashful, and Doc.)
Speaking of Disney, they’re the ones who lobbied for such long copyright terms, because in 1998 Mickey Mouse’s first appearance (in the 1928 cartoon Steamboat Willie) was close to losing its copyright. But after the Sonny Bono Act, Now that first Mickey Mouse appearance will enter the public domain in 2024. Walt Disney had just started his company in 1923, but they hadn’t produced anything major. So we won’t get any free Disney stuff in January.
But here’s what we will get:
Safety Last!
Movies
All these movies, including:
Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments
Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last!, including that scene where he dangles off a clock tower, and his Why Worry?
A long line-up of feature-length silent films, including Buster Keaton’s Our Hospitality and Charlie Chaplin’s The Pilgrim
Short films by Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, and Our Gang (later Little Rascals)
Cartoons including Felix the Cat (the character first appeared in a 1919 cartoon)
Marlene Dietrich’s film debut, a bit part in the German silent comedy The Little Napoleon; also the debuts of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Fay Wray
“Dizzy Fingers”
Music
All this music, including these classics:
“King Porter Stomp”
“Who’s Sorry Now?”
“Tin Roof Blues”
“That Old Gang of Mine”
“Yes! We Have No Bananas”
“I Cried for You”
“The Charleston”—written to accompany, and a big factor in the popularity of, the Charleston dance
Igor Stravinsky’s “Octet for Wind Instruments”
And these songs I picked purely based on their titles:
“Back To Croa-Jingo-Long”
“I’m Sitting Pretty In A Pretty Little City”
“Come On, Spark Plug!”
“Dizzy Fingers”
“I’ve Got The Yes! We Have No Bananas Blues”
“When It’s Night-Time In Italy, It’s Wednesday Over Here”
“Oh Gee Oh Gosh Oh Golly I’m In Love”
“Old King Tut”
“Horsey, Keep Your Tail Up”
Note that these are published songbooks, not recordings, meaning you can record a cover version without permission or payment, but you can’t just steal any post-1923 recording. So Connie Francis’s version of “Who’s Sorry Now?” is still under copyright.
Even worse, rights over music recorded until 1972 is governed by state law, and if its copyright was registered and renewed, it doesn’t automatically enter the public domain until 2067.
Virginia Woolf
Literature
This is the real good shit. All these books, and these books, including the classics:
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Cane by Jean Toomer
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Bambi by Felix Salten, illustrated by Barbara Cooney—the source of Disney’s animated film, and the first in a series
The Ego and the Id by Sigmund Freud
Towards a New Architecture by Le Corbusier
Whose Body?, the first Lord Peter Wimsey novel by Dorothy L. Sayers
Emily of New Moon, the first book of L.M. Montgomery’s Emily trilogy
The Inimitable Jeeves and Leave it to Psmith by P.G. Wodehouse
Two of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and The Murder on the Links
The Prisoner, volume 5 of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time (note that English translations have their own copyrights)
The Complete Works of Anthony Trollope
George Bernard Shaw’s play Saint Joan
Short stories by Christie, Virginia Woolf, H.P. Lovecraft, Katherine Mansfield, and Ernest Hemingway
Poetry by Edna St. Vincent Millay, E.E. Cummings, William Carlos Williams, Rainer Maria Rilke, Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, Sukumar Ray, and Pablo Neruda
Works by Jane Austen, D.H. Lawrence, Edith Wharton, Jorge Luis Borges, Mikhail Bulgakov, Jean Cocteau, Italo Svevo, Aldous Huxley, Winston Churchill, G.K. Chesterton, Maria Montessori, Lu Xun, Joseph Conrad, Zane Grey, H.G. Wells, and Edgar Rice Burroughs
Brancusi’s Bird in Space
Art
These artworks, including:
Constantin Brâncuși’s Bird in Space
Henri Matisse’s Odalisque With Raised Arms
Marcel Duchamp’s The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)
Yokoyama Taikan’s Metempsychosis
Work by M. C. Escher, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, and Man Ray
Many 1923 works, like the blockbuster film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, are already in the public domain, as the owners failed to renew their copyrights. Until 1963, a rightsholder had to manually renew their copyright after 28 years.
According to the LibraryLaw Blog, not everything published in 1923 will be public domain; only works with an authorized publication in 1923. The distinction came up in the legal fight over the rights to “Happy Birthday to You,” whose current owners maintained that the song had only been published by unauthorized sources, without the permission of the original owners. In the beginning, there was the Namsara: the child of sky and spirit, who carried love and laughter wherever he went. But where there is light, there must be darkness—and so there was also the Iskari. The child of blood and moonlight. The destroyer. The death-bringer.
These are the legends that Asha, daughter of the king of Firgaard, has grown up learning in hushed whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. Asha conquers each dragon and brings its head to the king, but no kill can free her from the shackles that await at home: her betrothal to the cruel commandant, a man who holds the truth about her nature in his palm. When she’s offered the chance to gain her freedom in exchange for the life of the most powerful dragon in Firgaard, she finds that there may be more truth to the ancient stories than she ever could have expected. Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff
Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator.
Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. Ultimately she dispensed with an ambitious sister as well; incest and assassination were family specialties. Cleopatra appears to have had sex with only two men. They happen, however, to have been Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, among the most prominent Romans of the day. Both were married to other women. Cleopatra had a child with Caesar and–after his murder–three more with his protégé. Already she was the wealthiest ruler in the Mediterranean; the relationship with Antony confirmed her status as the most influential woman of the age. The two would together attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled their ends. Cleopatra has lodged herself in our imaginations ever since.
Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Shakespeare and Shaw put words in her mouth. Michelangelo, Tiepolo, and Elizabeth Taylor put a face to her name. Along the way, Cleopatra’s supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order. Rich in detail, epic in scope, Schiff ‘s is a luminous, deeply original reconstruction of a dazzling life.

Rowling That which does not kill us makes us stronger. -Friedrich Nietzsche Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. -Lao Tzu We all have enough strength to endure the misfortunes of others. -François de La Rochefoucauld ~~~~~~~~~~~ Character quotes Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world. -George Bernard Shaw Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value. -Albert Einstein Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. -Helen Keller Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open. Talents are best nurtured in solitude. Character is best formed in the stormy billows of the world. -Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
