2022 Favorites of the Year
2022 Favorites of the Year
This year has been a year filled with several truly breathtaking reads. These aren’t ranked, rather they are listed in reading order. Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan was an impulse grab at the library. I can honestly say I cannot recall reading any Chinese mythology and yet, I was thoroughly enthralled by this novel. It is a retelling of a Chinese myth and it is a captivating and

Book Review: Imager, by L.E. Modesitt Jr.
_Book Review: Imager by L.E. Modesitt Junior_ Mr. Modesitt would probably be annoyed about this novel being compared to Fullmetal Alchemist. @[email protected] @[email protected]
L.E. Modesitt, Jr. is a writer I go through phases of liking a lot to not liking him at all. My liking of him can change from one end of a series to another or from one end of a book to another. As a writer his world building is meticulous and detailed, though his cultures are usually thinly veiled excuses to get a Point of some kind across. His magic usually has a good bit of science in it, and…

Endgames
"Endgames" by L.E. Modesitt Jr.
I didn't think it was possible but I actually really, really, really enjoyed this one. Charyn is the only character in this entire damn series that shows meaningful character growth. Funny how it took the first non-imager main character for that to be achieved. Despite that, I'm happy to be finished with this series. It was a serious drag for most of the serabo

New Title Tuesday: Sci-Fi & Fantasy
Contrarian by L.E. Modesitt Jr.
In Contrarian, protests against unemployment and poor harvests have become armed riots as the people sink deeper into poverty. They look to a government struggling to emerge from corruption and conspiracy.
Recently elected to the Council of Sixty-Six, Steffan Dekkard is the first Councilor who is an Isolate, a man invulnerable to the emotional manipulations and emotional surveillance of empaths—but not the recent bombing of the Council Office Building by insurrectionists. His patron, the Premier of the Council, has been assassinated, leaving Dekkard with little first-hand political experience and few political allies.
Not only must Dekkard handle political infighting, and continued assassination attempts, but it appears that someone high up in the government and corporations has supplied arms and explosives to insurrectionists.
Insurrectionists who have succeeded in taking over a naval cruiser that no one can seem to find.
This is the third volume of "The Grand Illusion" series.
Ebony Gate by Julia Vee & Ken Bebelle
Emiko Soong belongs to one of the eight premier magical families of the world. But Emiko never needed any magic. Because she is the Blade of the Soong Clan. Or was. Until she’s drenched in blood in the middle of a market in China, surrounded by bodies and the scent of blood and human waste as a lethal perfume.
The Butcher of Beijing now lives a quiet life in San Francisco, importing antiques. But when a shinigami, a god of death itself, calls in a family blood debt, Emiko must recover the Ebony Gate that holds back the hungry ghosts of the Yomi underworld. Or forfeit her soul as the anchor.
What's a retired assassin to do but save the City by the Bay from an army of the dead?
This is the first volume of the "Phoenix Hoard" series.
The Book of Witches edited by Jonathan Strahan

Whether they be maiden, mother, crone, or other; funny, fierce, light and airy, or dark and disturbing; witches are a vital part of some of the greatest stories we have, and new ones start here!
The Sun and the Void by Gabriela Romero-Lacruz
Reina is desperate.
Stuck living on the edges of society, her only salvation lies in an invitation from a grandmother she’s never known. But the journey is dangerous, and prayer can’t always avert disaster. Attacked by creatures that stalk the region, Reina is on the verge of death until her grandmother, a dark sorceress, intervenes. Now dependent on the Doña’s magic for her life, Reina will do anything to earn—and keep—her favor. Even the bidding of an ancient god who whispers to her at night.
Eva Kesare is unwanted.
Illegitimate and of mixed heritage, Eva is her family’s shame. She tries her best to be perfect and to hide her oddities. But Eva is hiding a secret: magic calls to her. Eva knows she should fight the temptation. Magic is the sign of the dark god, and using it is punishable by death. Yet, it’s hard to deny power when it has always been denied to you. Eva is walking a dangerous path, one that gets stranger every day. And, in the end, she’ll become something she never imagined.
This is the first volume of "The Warring Gods" series.

Animated fan-art of a sequence from The Mage-Fire War fantasy book by L.E Modesitt Jr. It immediately brought vivid images to mind and for some reason my brain went "hey wouldn't it be fun and totally not stupid to commit to it?". Anyway it was my first time experimenting with impact frames and I'm quite happy with those silly horse faces actually!

@maryse127 Tagged me in a “getting to know you” type of post, so I figured why not.
Three ships: Tigress/Po (has been with me since childhood) Cloud/Tifa (childhood friends is such a good trope. And she literally put him back together.) Taion/Eunie (I love how these two develop together)
Last Song: Sh-Boom, by The Chords. (I was feeling nostalgic for Cars)
Last Movie: Shazam, Fury of the Gods. (Solid action movie)
Currently reading: The Magic of Recluce, by L.E. Modesitt Jr. (A nice coming of age fantasy novel with some interesting ideas on magic. Although I’m not a fan of how he relies on onomatopoeia exclusively for fight scenes.)
Currently watching: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (Melodramatic, sure, but I’d rather take passionate if somewhat illogical characters rather than nothing characters in a perfectly logical plot [00 I am Looking in Your Direction])
Currently consuming: Nothing, lol. Just got back from Breakfast about an hour ago. (Eggs and Sausage.)
Currently craving: I need some more drinks in my fridge, but as for meals, Fish and Chips sounds so good rn.
Since I’m curious, I’ll tag @yarart4ever @vivi-mire @goldensunset @eggs-can-draw @purplelea @kosmososs

What's funny is that there actually was some good Star Wars stuff in Legends content, but that's no longer canon. Now the best iteration of an explanation of The Force is actually the Magic of Recluse books by L.E. Modesitt Jr., and it's not even Star Wars
there's a secret good sequel series that lives only in brain where finn and rey are force-sensitive foils to each other and they still spend movie #2 entirely apart but it's because they're exploring parallel and at time opposite relationships with the force and their place in the universe
and in my secret good version. okay hear me out. the han-leia kid is a hot lady. okay. are we following. and she DOES abandon luke's new jedi, not by falling and murdering people, but by stealing the millennium falcon and running off to escape responsibility and swaggers around with incredible han solo "loser pretending to be cool" energy. and then. she accidentally picks up two force sensitive teens on jakku and she's like. are you KIDDING me

The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L Armentrout
~ No. My chest tightened as sorrow sank its claws so deeply into me, I could taste the bitterness in my throat. Ch30
Fallen by L.E. Modesitt, Jr.
~ Excesses of anything--freedom, food, energy, knowledge--anything at all--must be controlled. Over time, self-control without oversight has never worked.
~ The most dangerous illusion is that knowledge sets one free. The more one knows, the more one is a slave to knowledge at any cost.
~ It's not knowledge that creates the Fall, but the limits of unthinking faith.
~ Like all blind disciples of knowledge, you insist that unrestricted knowledge and choice lead to peace and prosperity.
~..."choice leads to learning, and learning leads to both pain and transcendence, and an understanding that some will never learn, some will learn only what they wish to learn, and a few will learn all that they can...and they are the ones who are the foundation of greatness." / "And greatness always fails." / "So do peace and prosperity, with far less to show."
~ Without faith, neither prosperity nor knowledge can ever be enough.

L.E. Modesitt Jr does this well in his Saga of Recluse books. You just killed thousands of the enemy but you are (temporarily???) blind or are in the equivalent of a coma, but with nightmares.
best trope is the one where the character’s godlike power is also killing them btw. they don’t even lift a hand to kill the monster but now they’re delirious with fever. they save a friend’s life and said friend immediately finds them emergency medical care. they raze the enemy to nothing and it takes far too long to find their pulse with all the bruising. their friends just constantly having to patch them up and worrying over which feat will be their last. et cetera

“Without power, knowledge is useless. without knowledge, faith is tyranny. Without understanding, humanity is blind, and without all four, it is doomed.” ― L.E. Modesitt Jr.
