Matthew López: It was a hard-won scene. We actually filmed it in two sections, six months apart. We got all of the scene work and the beats down, and we got what we thought was sufficient party atmosphere beats. And we started to cut the film together, and I realized we just didn’t have enough. And so, we went back in January for a few days of reshoots on a couple of other things, and I got them to rebuild part of the set for me. And we brought in just a bunch of people, and we just had a big party and shot it. That was one of the great lessons for me as a first-time filmmaker, thinking I had enough and realizing that I didn’t, and then being given the opportunity to go back and get more of what I needed. But one of the blessings of that was because I had cut the scene already, then I got to plan the new shots very carefully. We got to invent moments and grab them.

When I was asked to choreograph Red, White & Royal Blue, I sat with director @matthewmichaellopez and talked about the New Years Eve scene. I remember thinking, “How can we give Alex and Henry a visual moment where they see each other from across the room in a way that hasn’t been done before?” I pitched, “What if everyone is dancing to Get Low by Lil Jon and then everyone gets low but the two of them?” Haha. Little did I know that Get Low had already been written into the book and the script. I guess it was meant to be. 🤷‍♂️ Choreography can be catchy and creative but it can also be as simple as two people falling in love. It’s all about creating moments through movement.

Just found out that Kyle Hanagami (choreographer for RWRB) choreographed the Mean Girls musical movie. YESSS!!!! So excited for his choreo and for Reneé Rapp's Regina George. This movie is going to be so good!

I used to be obsessed with Kyle's videos, like I even had favorite dancers and all. They are sooo good

ooooh, you're in deep! lol I first got exposed to Kyle during my kpop days when he first choreographed Red Velvet (and later on, Blackpink). loved it when BP actually performed his Yonce choreo for SBS Party People. that was a pretty iconic moment in recent kpop history.

anyway, it's just so funny how I used to watch choreo vids from him, Lia Kim, Brian Puspos, Parris Goebel, Keone Madrid, etc. on youtube when I was younger when I can't dance for shit. there's just something so hypnotizing in those videos, I can't expaint it lmao.
