Matthew López: It was a hard-won scene. We actually filmed it in two sections, six months apart. We got all of the scene work and the beats down, and we got what we thought was sufficient party atmosphere beats. And we started to cut the film together, and I realized we just didn’t have enough. And so, we went back in January for a few days of reshoots on a couple of other things, and I got them to rebuild part of the set for me. And we brought in just a bunch of people, and we just had a big party and shot it. That was one of the great lessons for me as a first-time filmmaker, thinking I had enough and realizing that I didn’t, and then being given the opportunity to go back and get more of what I needed. But one of the blessings of that was because I had cut the scene already, then I got to plan the new shots very carefully. We got to invent moments and grab them.

When I was asked to choreograph Red, White & Royal Blue, I sat with director @matthewmichaellopez and talked about the New Years Eve scene. I remember thinking, “How can we give Alex and Henry a visual moment where they see each other from across the room in a way that hasn’t been done before?” I pitched, “What if everyone is dancing to Get Low by Lil Jon and then everyone gets low but the two of them?” Haha. Little did I know that Get Low had already been written into the book and the script. I guess it was meant to be. 🤷‍♂️ Choreography can be catchy and creative but it can also be as simple as two people falling in love. It’s all about creating moments through movement.

Step Up inspired Firstprince AU. Alex is a hip hop dancer, Henry a ballet dancer.

Unlike Step Up (the OG version), I’m thinking they are both adult professionals who meet as part of a collaborative project - a fundraiser for the arts maybe? Of course they clash at first, but they end up dancing together and, well, sparks fly.

on christmas, this nice lady gave me a card to contact for auditions. and i didn’t go. stuff came up, i got sick, and i honestly thought she was just meeting quota. but she was nice, and i felt bad, so now i’m gonna try here! i never really thought about being an idol before. i like dancing, and i like making choreography. it’s the new year so...figured i’d try something new! i don’t have too much faith i’ll get in, but you never know until you try, right?
