Song Review: Kurt Deimer - “Have a Cigar”

Kurt Deimer should stick with acting.

Working with Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X, Deimer cut Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar,” a recording described as a “precursor” to a forthcoming six-song EP of original material co-written by Deimer, X and producer Chris Lord-Alge.

“We thought ‘Cigar’ was a great way to introduce ourselves before we start unleashing our new material in September - not only is it an homage to a band I love, but even more importantly, it’s an introduction to a side of Phil X’s playing that nobody has seen before,” Deimer said in a statement. “This sets the tone.”

The music, hewing closely to the original melody, isn’t the problem here. It’s Deimer’s half-spoken vocal delivery in a baritone that makes it difficult to determine if he’s serious (if serious, then it’s just bad singing) or joking (if joking, it’s not funny).

He should stick with acting, ’cause this “Cigar” don’t smoke.
