the first clip for "the day the earth blew up" was posted on twitter. can you spare us your thoughts?
@aadrawings: So uh how about that new Looney movie clip?
I MOST CERTAINLY CAN SPARE MY THOUGHTS! TWIST MY ARM! first, i'll link it here in case anyone hasn't seen it:
youtube
FIRST (and most obvious) THING'S FIRST: I'M SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED UUUUUUUUUUUUUGHHH!!! the film JUST started premiering in Annecy as we speak and my heart is literally pounding MY FINGERS LITERALLY SHAKING. so i apologize if this turns into a discombobulated mess i'm so so so excited and trying to keep an eagle eye out for any and all details. BUT ANYHOO
IT LOOKS GREAT!!! this is a fully rendered clip of the roughs that were uploaded back in September of 2022, so i'm already pretty familiar with this since i gushed over it to hell and back then, too. i had a few teeny tiny neurotic nitpicks that i would not take too seriously--honestly me nitpicking anything modern LT is a good sign because it means i'm ENGAGED and actively thinking and engaging with the material. there are a lot of modern LT adaptations i cannot say the same for. so it's all out of a labor of love and i also realize that most of these nitpicks are very.. you guys know my level of fanaticism. don't take it too seriously. my standards for this series AND THESE TWO KNUCKLEHEADS IN PARTICULAR who are my favorite characters of all time are so high that even the classics don't meet those expectations half the time. we all know i'm insane. BUT ENOUGH BLUFFING
my biggest critique is that it's going to take me quite a bit to get used to Eric Bauza's Porky. i LOVE Bauza, he is such a sweet guy (he sang me happy birthday as Daffy Duck and i almost exploded) and so talented and it's been really great seeing him rise up the ranks. i used to only know him as "the guy who voiced Stimpy in APC" and so i'm VERY glad to see he's gone on to greener pastures LOL.
but, with that said, the first time i saw these roughs i actually thought Porky's lines were scratch audio. there isn't enough stuttering--it's important for me to note that people give Porky's stutter WAY too much prevalence, in terms of how he sounds and just characterization as a whole. a stutter is not a personality. BUT, in the clips above, he doesn't really sound like Porky unless he's stuttering. it moreso sounds like Daffy talking to himself. Mel Blanc had Porky speak (and even sing!) in full sentences all the time, but it's never noticeable unless pointed out because Porky still sounded like Porky and Blanc knew how to make his personality come out in his voice beyond the vocal fluff of a stutter.
part of it is because i'm so used to Bob Bergen. and, even THEN, if i watch too much LTC or Duck Dodgers in one sitting, i need to "recalibrate" with the originals and hear Blanc. Bergen's Porky is much different than Mel's, more formal, the stutter more concrete in its formula (fun fact: Blanc's Porky has a southern twang in his voice if you listen for it depending on who's voice directing and i love it so much. biggest giveaway is how his "i"'s will often sound like an "ah" instead, not thinking of the stutter. I WARNED YOU we are getting into super pedantic territory here), but, much like how Joe Alaskey's Daffy is a much different interpretation than Blanc's Daffy, he was able to really make it his own. i think Bauza's Porky is still in a little bit of a limbo in finding its identity with that regard. but, also, keep in mind we've only heard him in this clip and Space Jam 2 and i have no plans of revisiting SJ2 to make a point here. sorry
THAT'S MY BIGGEST CRITIQUE i'd say! others are small, such as the design of the landlady is fun but reads like something out of the 2020 Animaniacs than anything based in the LT design philosophy, and you could argue that the fluidity is more Richard Williams-esque in its visual fluffiness and perhaps even excessiveness than, again, anything relating to LT. but i take less stock in that last one because the animation is STILL GORGEOOOOOOOOOOOOUS WHAT THE HECK!!!! so many fluid arcs and i really love that scene of Daffy talking to the landlady. the subtle twitching on Porky's cheek as a secondary action made me laugh.
other than that... you guys know that I. LOVE. LTC. i have been tracking it before it released, and there are posts on this blog (i think i saw one even dating back to its initial announcement in 2018, though it may have been a 2019 post of the 2018 upload. dunno.) dating back before i was even into LT at ALL. i've been keeping an eagle eye on every single development. the day they premiered i watched the entire batch 3 times in a row. i streamed it for you guys too! some people reading this may have been in that room.
ALL THIS TO SAY, i LOVE LTC SO MUCH and it's been the most excited i've been for anything in a very long time. i also have my fair share of nitpicks, but, as i've expressed above, they all come out of a place of love. some of the Porky and Daffy shorts in the LTCs i would have handled differently if i had my hands on them. Porky and Daffy are two characters who are deeply special to me, everyone knows me as The Porky And Daffy person including my coworkers and bosses, my friends who worked on the show and film have told me many times they're eager for my thoughts. the pig and duck are literally a part of my identity. so my critiques come more out of a place of fanaticism and love for the characters and wanting to do them justice and wanting people to see what i see in them, rather than an actual dig at the product
THAT ALL BEING SAID. there are some pitfalls and little traps the P+D (and a lot of LTC in general) shorts run into that i'm expecting to be in the movie as well. there's a little bit here with the screaming and some lines of dialogue that i probably would have shaved off (like "our roof?"). months ago i started typing up mini reviews of each LTC short that i may compile here someday--my Max subscription was about to run out and i wanted to watch all the LTCs one last time while i could. and then i renewed because i couldn't watch quickly enough and now need to return LOL--and it allowed me to lay out some of the nitpicks i have with the series more clearly, which i am fully expecting to also be in the movie. and that's okay!
ALLLL OF THIS RAMBLING IS TO SAY: I AM SO EXCITED. i've been tracking every single detail of this movie and this SERIES like a hawk since it was announced. i was even asked to work on the film back in 2021, but turned it down because i wasn't secure enough in my abilities and didn't know what job security would look like after i finished on the film. i'm glad i stuck with the decision as i did, because i figured i can draw those two any time i want, and the fact that i got asked meant that there are eyes on my work and i may get asked with other LT related offers (which turned out to be true!). needless to say, turning down the offer was genuinely one of the most excruciating things i've ever done and it seriously sent me into a pretty big funk for the next few days and weeks.
so, with all that said, it is ESPECIALLY important for me to see how this movie is and celebrate it and keep my fanatical obsessive eagle eye out. i'm so glad i get to live in a world where this is a movie that is happening and coming out. i've already got plans to see it with a best friend who i've shoved the agenda of the pig and duck down her throat many times. i am so excited to cheer on all my friends and colleagues who worked on this film. it's the most excited i think i have ever been for anything actively coming out in my life.

April 9th 1283 saw the birth of Margaret, Maid of Norway.
Another long post, but I think it's important that we understad how Margaret became such and important figure in our history during her tragically short life.
Historians debate whether Margaret counts as a Scottish monarch and Scotland’s first queen because she was never inaugurated. However, she was named heir by her grandfather was the unfortunate Alexander III, and was accepted as such, so her linaege is not in question, the fact is she was never crowned.
Margaret, known as the Maid of Norway was the daughter if King Eric II of Norway and Margaret of Scotland. By the end of the reign of her grandfather King Alexander II of Scotland, she was the only surviving descendant and was recognised as heir presumptive. He died in 1286 and his unborn child with his wife Yolande, died stillborn, leaving Margaret to inherit the crown. As she was only three at the time, she remained in Norway for four years before starting the journey to Scotland.
Her father and other Scottish leaders attempted to negotiate a marriage between her and Edward I of England’s son, eventually sending her to Scotland in September of 1290. She died in Orkney on her way and sparked a succession dispute which would last a number of years.
south-eastern Norway and grew up without her mother who died in childbirth. Her father, who was just 15 at the time, was advised to place her in the custody of the Bishop of Bergen, where she was raised. Now that she was in Bergen, there began a race to secure an advantageous marriage.
Once Alexander III became aware that Margaret was his only surviving descendant, he had all thirteen earls, 24 barons and three clan chiefs come to Scone to swear an oath of allegiance to her as his successor should he die without leaving a son or daughter. Following his unexpected death, Scottish magnates gathered to discuss the future of the kingdom and chose six regents to govern the country in the absence of an heir. At this time, Queen Yolande, Alexander’s second wife was pregnant and it was assumed that this child would be the next monarch rather than Margaret. However, Queen Yolande lost the baby and King Eric sent a representative to Scotland to claim the kingdom for his daughter. Opposition from Robert Bruce, among others, led him to make the decision not to send Margaret straight away.
In 1289, referring to his daughter as Lady Margaret and Queen Margaret, Eric began a negotiation with King Edward of England. As she was still under the protection of her father, the Scottish could only observe these negotiations. The Scottish guardians, along with Bruce, made their way to Salisbury where they met with English and Norwegian envoys to further discuss the Scottish throne. The Treaty of Salisbury stated that King Eric had handed over power to Edward I to intervene on Margaret’s behalf. The treaty agreed that Margaret was to be sent by 1st November to England and once the Scots could assure Edward that there was peace in their kingdom, she would be released to them. Edward was also allowed to choose her husband, though her father was allowed to veto the choice if he wished. The pair ended up seeking papal dispensation so that Margaret could marry Edward’s son, something that the Scottish guardians agreed.
Negotiations regarding the marriage continued into 1290 between England and Scotland with plans for a personal union between the two counties. However, diplomatic difficulties delayed Margaret’s arrival. A further treaty was agreed in July of that year that agreed that Scotland was to remain fully independent, despite any personal union and that Margaret alone would be inaugurated.
Margaret eventually set sail in August 1290 on board one of her father’s ships, though he did not accompany her. Her former guardian, the Bishop Narve was present however. It is noted that she began her journey in good health but became ill during the journey causing the shop to land in Orkney to find medical assistance. She continued to suffer for up to a week before dying in September in the arms of the Bishop. The Scottish magnates were informed the following month and returned her body to Bergen, where her father insisted on an open casket to confirm her identity. She was then buried in the north wall of Christ Church which has since been destroyed.
Margaret was the last legitimate descendant of King William the Lion. After her death, thirteen men laid claim to the throne, including Robert Bruce (The Competitor) and John Balliol. Her father King Eric also half heartedly attempted to claim the throne but died in 1299. In 1301, a German woman claimed that she was the real Margaret, however, she was imprisoned and burned at the stake.

watched on Sept 29, 2024 on netflix
View from the Top (2003) directed by Bruno Barreto
age rating: 13+ genre: comedy, romance duration: 1h 27m country: United States language: English screenplay: Eric Wald
major cast: Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Applegate, Mark Ruffalo, Candice Bergen, Mike Myers, Rob Lowe
plot summary: Donna Jensen (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a small-town woman with big dreams of becoming a flight attendant and seeing the world. starting with a low-level job at a small airline, she eventually pursues her goal of flying international first-class, thanks to her ambition and guidance from veteran flight attendant Sally Weston (Candice Bergen). along the way, Donna faces obstacles from both her competitive friend Christine (Christina Applegate) and her budding romance with law student Ted (Mark Ruffalo).
if you enjoyed this post, don't forget to show some loves by leaving comments / likes / reblog / help me to spread the words. follow me for more reviews!! ❤︎❤︎
read my thought below (may contain spoiler):
this movie is an absolute delight! from the get-go, View from the Top pulled me in with its unique focus on career and self-discovery, which isn’t always the central theme in a rom-com. I loved seeing Donna’s journey from a small-town girl working on a shabby regional airline to a polished flight attendant flying first class internationally. the whole “career progression” theme adds a refreshing twist to what could’ve been a typical rom-com. instead, it feels a bit like a grown-up fairy tale — a little slow and sweet at the beginning, sure, but ultimately rewarding. the script has a fluffy, feel-good charm that feels both nostalgic and endearing, especially with its lighter tone and Christmas-y vibes. it’s perfect for a cosy weekend watch — or even a family movie night since it doesn’t rely on raunchy humour or over-the-top romance. it's one of those movies I can kick back with, knowing it’s as much about the journey and laughs as it is about any romantic angle.
Rob Lowe pops up early as a co-pilot, and I thought he might be Donna’s love interest. but nope, that role goes to Mark Ruffalo — a choice I definitely didn’t mind! though he and Paltrow have some height awkwardness, Ruffalo’s charm shines, and honestly, I was just glad to see him in the movie! and then there’s Mike Myers. his performance as the eccentric flight instructor feels like classic Myers with a dash of absurdity. sure, he goes a little overboard with the humour, but it works in the quirky, kitschy world of this movie. as for Christina Applegate — she’s adorable, seriously! even if villainous, her character Christine, is feisty and ambitious, adding a touch of rivalry that spices up the storyline. her looks and on-screen energy are delightful, and I couldn’t help but love her, even when her character threw Donna a curveball or two. all in all, View from the Top doesn’t delve deep into complex emotions or plot twists, but it’s not trying to. it’s light and filled with fun moments that make it easy to watch. it’s not a film I dissect; it’s one I enjoy without overthinking. I would watch it again for the nostalgia and the laughs. if you’re in the mood for a feel-good, fluff-filled film with a quirky plot and charming characters, give it a shot. but if you prefer movies with depth or heavy storylines, maybe skip it.

Missing link found in gamma emission phenomena from thunderclouds
Groundbreaking Discoveries in Gamma-Ray Emissions from Thunderstorms
In the recent edition of Nature, groundbreaking results about the gamma-ray emissions produced during thunderstorms are presented. Overall, these findings reveal that gamma-ray emission from thunderclouds is much more complex, diverse, and dynamic than previously thought. Understanding these phenomena is crucial to uncovering the secrets of lightning.
Flickering Gamma-Ray Flashes: A New Discovery
Entitled “Flickering Gamma-Ray Flashes, the Missing Link between Gamma Glows and TGFs,” the paper by Østgaard et al. [2024] reports unique observations of a new phenomenon called Flickering Gamma-Ray Flashes (FGFs).
During thunderclouds, two different hard radiation phenomena have so far been known to originate: Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and gamma-ray glows. This third phenomenon, observed and named FGFs by Østgaard et al. [2024] resembles the other two, while at the same time revealing certain characteristics separating FGFs from the others. Most noteworthy may be that FGFs are pulses of gamma-rays not associated with any detectable optical or radio signals.
The Missing Link Found?
«We think that FGFs could be the missing link between TGFs and gamma-ray glows, whose absence has been puzzling the atmospheric electricity community for two decades», says lead author and Professor Nikolai Østgaard at the University of Bergen.
Dynamic Gamma-Ray Emissions in Tropical Thunderclouds
In another study presented in this edition of Nature, Marisaldi et al. [2024] focus on the phenomenon referenced above and known as gamma-ray glows. The paper, entitled «Highly dynamic gamma-ray emissions are common in tropical thunderclouds», shows that contrary to what has been believed until now, tropical thunderclouds over ocean and coastal regions commonly emit gamma rays for hours over areas up to a few thousand square kilometers.
A New Understanding of Gamma-Ray Glows
«The dynamics of gamma-glowing thunderclouds starkly contradicts the former quasi-stationary picture of glows, and resembles that of a huge gamma-glowing boiling pot both in pattern and behavior», says Professor Martino Marisaldi at the University of Bergen.
The ALOFT Campaign
The groundbreaking results presented by Østgaard et al. [2024] and Marisaldi et al. [2024] are based on observations from the ALOFT (Airborne Lightning Observatory for FEGS and TGFs) campaign.
ALOFT, a collaboration between NASA and the University of Bergen, involved flying the NASA ER-2 aircraft from the MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, over tropical thunderstorms around the Gulf of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean in the summer of 2023. The payload included lightning detectors, gamma-ray scintillators, and a mix of passive and/ or active microwave sensors. A total of 10 flights were conducted above thunderclouds around Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Florida.
The ALOFT campaign was financed by the Research Council of Norway and led by Professor Nikolai Østgaard and Professor Martino Marisaldi from the University of Bergen, Timothy Lang (Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA), and Franzeska Becker (ER-2 Mission Management).
The instrumentation on Board ER-2 during the ALOFT campaign included:
Gamma-ray detectors UIB-BGO (PI: Nikolai Østgaard, UiB) and iStorm (PI: Eric Grove, NRL)
An optical instrument named FEGS (PI: Mason Quick, Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA)
Two electric field sensors known as EFCM (PI: Hugh Christian, University of Alabama, Huntsville) and LIP (PI: Christopher Schultz, Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA)
Four cloud characterization instruments: AMPR (PI: Timothy Lang, Marshall Flight Center, NASA), CRS and EXRAD (PI: Gerry Heymsfield, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA), and CoSSIR (PI: Rachael Kroodsma, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA)
The flight campaign was coordinated with ground-based radio observations managed by a large network of collaborators.

Voyage Through the Disney Canon :1937-1949 ranking
These are the first 11 Disney animated films ,ranked from my least favorite to most favorite
11.Fun and Fancy Free -Ah Fun and Fancy Free, the favorite Disney film of nobody ,at least from what I have seen .I have never seen any one talk about this one positively and yeah I'm not gonna praise it either, this film is rather messy .I really dont like the first segment about Bongo the Bear,I actually think it is dreadful (THough Dinah Shore does some good narration ),Jiminey Cricket is a bit grating here ,and I like Edgar Bergen in general but wow is the wraparound segment with him unsettling especially if you dont know who he is .The Mickey and the Beanstalk segment is good but not to noteworthy aside from Bill Gilbert delivering a enjoyable performance as the giant and there is a scene where Donald becomes murderously insane ,thats fun
10.Saludos Amigos -This movie isnt bad,its just....Barely a film .Its only a bit over 40 minutes ,it feels more like EDutainment talking about South America .It fine for what it is and hey it gave us Jose Carioca
9.Melody Time -Its fine .I like the Blame it on the Samba segment and the Johnny Appleseed segment is sweet and definately the best part of the film, gets me misty eyed ,but every other segment is just.....OK to me
8.Three Caballeros -The much better companion film to Saludos Amigos, this film is weird and energetic ansd just fun, with the titular song being a highlight .
7.Dumbo:So of the 5 Capital C Classics(The first 5 films Disney made which are Snow White,Pinocchio,Fantasia ,Dumbo and Bambi ),I didnt know which ones would rank where.....But knew of the 5 Dumbo would be the lowest, which I feel bad about cuase...I really like Dumbo ,its a very nostalgic childhood favorite :Pink Elephants is a great sequence, the Baby Mine song brings a tear to my eye .heck the songs in general are good,Dumbo is a lovable protagonist and I love the performance of Edward Brophy as Timothy the mouse ,I think he is an underrated sidekick. It has a MAJOR problem with it and yes it is the racism ,like wow,not just the crow scene but the song "Happy Hearted Roustabouts" which is just...Yikes .However theres another reason it is not higher becuase it does its job too well.It was made to be a short simple movie, and it suceeds in being that ,but as such the other films I find more interesting .However let it be known I have a soft spot for Dumbo
6.Make Mine Music -This ia an underrated gem.I personally dont dig the more abstract segments but theres a lot of fun music and animation and I think the final segment the Whale That Wanted To Sing at the Met is a masterpiece with for me,the saddest moment in the Walt era
5.Fantasia -FAntasia is a movie I admire more then I like .Most of what I love is in the second half,I adore the Dance of the Hours and the Pastorial Sympathy and of course Night on Bald Mountain is MAGNIFICENT ,butwith the exception of the delightful Sorcerers Apprentice, the first half drags for me .I do like the movie ,finding it very artistically pleasing but I cant say its one of my personal favorite Disney films but can totally see why it is a favorite for many
4.Bambi -This is a contender for the best looking film of the Walt era, gorgeous backgrounds ,great character animation and its more of a vibe then a story .Its not for everyone....But Bambi is awesome to me,its kind of neat just watching this deer live his life .ITs really cute (Especially the stuff with Thumper the rabbit ),its gorgeous and has some solid emotional moments .I dont like the soundtrack but the rest of the film I really enjoy .
3.The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad -This is my favorite of the wartime/post war animated films cause its one I watched a bunch as a kid .No9w truthfully the first segment covering Wind In the Willows is just good.I like the performances of Eric Blore as Mr Toad and J PAt O Malley as Cyril ,theres some funny moments,Basil Rathbone is a good narrator ,but I prefer other takes on Wind in the Willows and I dont like how minimized Ratty and Mole are .....The second segment is a masterpiece, with great character animation, comedy, wonderful narration by Bing Crosby who also sings the banger that is the Headless Horseman song and yeah the Headless Horseman himself is a wonderfully scary villain with the chase scene between him and Ichabod Crane being one hell of a climax.
2.Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs -This film the more I see it the more I love it .Its funny cause I used to not like this movie but now I have fallen for its simplistic charm. It feels like no other Disney film ,like it is so unpolished cause they are trying to figure out how to make a feature and I finsd it endearing .Snow White is a character I do care about, the Queen is a simple yet imposing villain and By god when she becomes the Witch she is reallly creepy and rightfully has been nightmare fuel for many a child over the generations (Props to the voice work of Lucille LaVerne ).The scene stealers really are the Dwarfs ,especially Grumpy and Dopey who are played an animated well.Bit of a comfort movie for me ,so had to place it a bit high
1.Pinocchio-This is one of my favorite animated films of all time .It is sweet ,it is dramtic , and it can be really intense .The songs are all great (No Strings On Me might be my favorite ) .The character animation is great (I particularly love Bill Tytlas animation of Stromboli ) ,the climax is just a marvel of animation (Monstro the Whale is one hell of a feat of animation ),Pinocchio is a likeable protagonist,Honest John is a hilarious comedic villain who stands in contrast to the more terrifying villainay of Stromboli and the Coachman ,and Jiminy Cricket ,Geppetto, and Figaro are just lovable.I love lovve love love love love love this movie .

Conspiracy theory I didn't come up with: Part of why Hollywood is so weird with Looney Tunes and Muppets is that they resent the voice work involved. Even dumbass execs know you need Kermit to sound like Kermit and Daffy to sound like Daffy and they HATE that they can't just recast them with some random celebrity.
HMMMMM… i unfortunately don’t know enough about the Muppets to throw my two cents in there, but with LT—i both see where you’re going with this and somewhat object at the same time.
i guess my point i’m about to bring up just as much proves you right, but they DID get away with some celeb stunt casting with Space Jam 2 (lol) thanks to Zendaya and Gabriel Iglesias. and hell even going back to TLTS, you have Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen… Frank Gorshin voices Daffy in Superior Duck.. so there IS the fair share of celeb stunt casting with these characters, which i guess does in a way sort of prove your point, but to me still makes me think it’s not entirely it
one of my biggest complaints with modern LT revivals IS, however, that they never seem to write the characters with Mel Blanc in mind. i realize the man has been dead for 35 years and we obviously can’t raise him back, but the originals were so often written to cater to his voice talents and his quirks and his specificities, and while you have incredibly talented voice actors like Eric Bauza or Bob Bergen or Jeff Bergman or Joe Alaskey (RIP), the one little ingredient missing from their deliveries is because they aren’t written with Mel in mind. Mel’s involvement is just as important to the characters and their personalities as the directors and writers and animators
which leads me to my next point in that i just think that nobody understands the Looney Tunes characters, simple as. they don’t! they are not some big happy family à la the Muppets, who, in turn, are not some big happy family. likewise they are not mindless drones who drop anvils and blow each other up and repeat the same 2 bits over and over and over again. i don’t think Space Jam 2’s ineptitude is a product of execs losing their minds over the inability to stunt cast—i just think you don’t know your Looney Tunes if you’re going to genuinely play up a Bugs Bunny death scene as a sincere, heart felt moment. come on!!!!!
i still think a lot about the excerpt in Jerry Beck’s 100 Greatest LT Shorts book where one of the contributors—whose name escapes me—had a WB exec tell him in the ‘90s that nobody likes Porky because “people don’t like pigs”, and his quip in the book was “well, i’m people and i like pigs!”. likewise the whole political correctness bit in Back in Action is true to life! the Speedy complaint surprises me less but the whole “first they tell me to lose the stutter, then they tell me i’m not funny” actually happened! WB hasn’t known what to do with these characters for half a century at this point and it’s unfortunately nothing new. i wish it were just a matter of grievances at celebrity voice casting, but i really do think it’s just because nobody knows how the hell to characterize or approach the characters.
likewise, that is very much by design. the original run is lightning in a bottle. its brilliance is the product of so many ultra specific circumstances and benefits and histories and trial and error that you just can’t really replicate. i mean, you can, but even with the most meticulous studying and planning and adaptation and mathematical calculations and all that other jargon, even if you put all that into your work… you’re still not Chuck Jones with Chuck Jones’ life experience, you’re not Bob Clampett with Bob Clampett’s life experience, not Friz Freleng, not Bob McKimson, not Frank Tashlin…
i am a loud proponent of thinking that honoring these characters correctly and accurately and respectfully is possible. i think it can be done. i think it is possible to study all of the quirks of the directors, of the writers, the animators, the characters, how the characters talk and walk and play off of each other, how the directorial tone is dictated. you have to be a complete nut to do it, but i think it’s possible. but that just goes back to the original question of: well… why try and make carbon copies of the originals when the originals are right there? (which, i admit, is another question that i myself get huffy about and am like “just because!!!! why not!” but i can’t act like i can fully deny it either. it’s a valid question.)
ANYWAY. i just went on a huge tangent, some of which is completely unrelated to your ask and your point so MY APOLOGIES! i do think you have something there, but i really do think the main perpetrator is just a lack of understanding and awareness. or, we do have adaptations that show potential and they aren’t given the light of day to be realized and help set the course a little because we need to think of our tax write-offs first. god forbid!
#i do like the timing of you sending this the day the Chris PraI Mean Garfield trailer came out#anonymous#asks
