Since the whole museum has a switching exposition and not a fixed collection, I can not really judge over the museum itself, more about the exposition. The museum is placed at ‘’het Eemsplein’’ locally known for having homeless men harassing you, and they did. The building itself is very modern looking, the whole square it's placed on looks modern, all stone and metal. Just not really my thing.

I was not prepared

I was in the city and had some free time, so I popped in, not knowing what the museum was about. After I was greeted by the friendly staff and put my backpack in a locker and walked thou the big doors, where I saw a naked mannequin (Dick out and all) standing at the end of the hallway, staring at me, holding two heads in his hands. Okay cool anyway, let's walk further. Into a big room with multiple people hanging from the roof. Where the fuck am I??’. I started walking through the exposition and came into a black room with tv’s that played short clips of brain scans, hostages being kicked on the ground, and American soldiers posing with bombs. All the while the sound of a voice was playing, echoing saying things like, you know you're dreaming… right?? And creepy slowed-down music. It made me feel fear, it made me feel uncomfortable. I didn't know what was going on or how I got into this situation. I felt like I was in an Indie horror game like my boyfriend sometimes shows me. I didn't like it.

But the further I walked, the more interesting it got, weird ‘’edgy’’ drawing like that you would see in a high school notebook. I started thinking to myself, what in the ‘’nice guy’’ incel collection is this?? Statues of mutilated dead bodies, and all kinds of colours and textures. As the artist describes, he makes these things from what he has ‘’lying around’’. Looking a bit closer at these characters, I noticed these hands were too detailed to be a mannequin, the wrinkles, and pores and all. It started to scare me, how do I know this guy doesn't just have real humans ‘’lying around’’ based on what I saw earlier I would have believed it.

When you see his work, you already start making a picture in your mind of what this deranged, mentally ill human could look like. But then I saw the interview, a friendly-looking man, a friendly teacher or neighbour vibe to him. Wearing his sweater with soft pink, blue, and yellows. I had judged too quickly, I had made a stereotype and judged the book by its cover. 

Really inspiring

I hated it at first because ‘’these drawings are so stupid, I could make them!’’ ‘’This is not art! He just wants to be edgy’’. I have not made art for myself in a long time, because these are the comments I would get. But this man just does what he wants, he makes great art, and you can see the great skill in his work. He's just having fun, making things up as you go. Doing what he wants or just for the shock value.

In the interview, he talks about how he grew up around bunkers, and his parents always talked about war stories. How he would go to the video store and always rented American horror movies. How he grew up being proud of his country, but the more he learned, the more disappointed he got. How he feels like his mind is an isolation cell he desperately wants to escape. To see what more there is. it suddenly all made sense. And walking thou it a second time with a new view inspired me.

The KAdEStudio

In the studio you can make your own art. The activities you can do here are connected to the art exposition, so it also changes. This time, you could draw your own character/mannequin with crayons and markers. Next to that, you could make clay faces, or I guess clay anything. After you finished with it, there was a display where you can put it. And write your name and age. It was fun to see the different artworks from the ‘’normal people’’ and to see all different ages on this display, from 4 to 80! Sadly, they only had 2 tables to make the clay on, and there were already people sitting there. So I didn't make them. 

TLDR +I would recommend it for Artists and Art students since it's usually not the ‘’mainstream’’ art. + Fun art activities, matching the theme + changing expos making it re-visitable.

- wouldn't recommend it for kids, maybe with a more kid-friendly expo.  - small, Even tho I take my sweet time looking at the art, watching the whole interview, playing at the studio and even looking at the fun things in the gift shop. I was standing outside again in an hour.

Would I pay the price: No, it was too short/small in my opinion Would I revisit it: yes, since the expositions keep changing every so months.

Hey, hey! Get to “Tell Freedom,” from Jan. 27 - May 6, at Kunsthal KAde Amersfoort, and see the work of 15 young, South African artists (including Bronwyn Katz and Buhlebezwe Siwani of the SA black womxn arts collective, IQhiya). 

Of these artists, “their work examines and comments on social, political and economic injustices rooted in the colonial era and period of apartheid. Through it, they seek to understand their own position in the changing society of South Africa and at the same time to imagine the future.”

De Duitse schilder Friedrich Kunath verhuisde naar Los Angelos, een trek naar ‘Het Westen’, op zoek naar nieuw geluk. De schilder grijpt terug op de Romantiek. De kleine mens is geplaatst tegenover een overweldigende natuur. Ook de Amerikaanse Romantische kunststroming Hudson River School vormt een inspiratiebron voor de schilder. Deze stroming idealiseerde de Amerikaanse natuur. Opvallend in het werk zijn de pasteuze verfstreken, die nogal contrasteren met de sobere en dunne wijze waarop het mensfiguurtje is geschilderd. Fraai geschilderd is de zon, die de indruk wekt echt licht uit te stralen.

De Nederlandse fotograaf Erwin Olaf verliet in 2020 zijn studio en ging in Zuid-Duitsland de natuur in, waar hij mis-en-scènes creëerde waarin de mens zich verhoudt tot de natuur. Ook dit werk van Olaf grijpt duidelijk terug op de Romantiek. De nietige mens ziet zich geplaatst tegenover de sublieme grootsheid van de natuur, in dit geval in de vorm van een waterval. Door het contrast tussen de donkere achtergrond en de felle witheid van de waterval ontstaat een fascinerende spanning.

Spent an afternoon in Amersfoort on Saturday and it was faaantastic.

I was initially going to hop on a train and get off at a random stop, but I ended up having a nightmare that I stood at the train station for ages unable to make up my mind which ‘random’ train to take 🤣. So I semi-planned out Amersfoort and loved it all - the market on the Hof, the muurhuizen built atop the old city walls, the koppelpoort, The Mondriaan House (museum about Mondriaan), Kunsthal KAdE (modern art museum), and more.

Been feeling in a bit of a rut lately so it was really nice just to get out and do something semi-spontaneous, wander aimlessly and appreciate the sights, smells, and sounds around me 💛.

Waar?   Tentoonstelling Tell me your story – 100 jaar storytelling in Afrikaans-Amerikaanse kunst, in Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort.

In de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw trokken veel zwarte Amerikanen uit het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten naar steden in het noorden. Deze trek is deels te verklaren uit het zoeken naar werkgelegenheid, deels uit de poging te ontkomen aan het racisme in het zuiden. Onder Afro-Amerikanen ontstond een nieuw zelfbewustzijn, dat zich met name uitte in literatuur en muziek. Beeldende kunst van zwarte kunstenaars beperkte zich nog in belangrijke mate tot boekillustraties. Een belangrijke kunstenaar in dat genre was Aaron Douglas, die veel gebruik maakte van silhouetten in zijn werk. Een paar ‘swingende’ voorbeelden zijn de nachtclubscènes in blauw en zwart en roze en zwart.

Bleven de beeldend kunstenaars tijdens de Harlem Renaissance enigszins achter bij andere disciplines, ze haalden deze achterstand in de daarop volgende periode ruimschoots in. Werken van Romare Bearden tonen allerlei aspecten van het dagelijks leven: van werk tot familietafereel en van kaartspelletje tot pianoles. Een bijzonder fraai werk van deze kunstenaar is de collage The Block II, waarin we een inkijkje krijgen in een huizenblok.

Een belangrijke kunstenaar uit de Post-Harlem Remaissance is Jacob Lawrence. Ik ontdekte zijn werk voor het eerst op internet, waar ik kennis maakte met zijn Migrant Series, een uit 60 panelen bestaande reeks waarin de kunstenaar de tocht van zwarte Amerikanen naar de steden in het Noorden van de Verenigde Staten uitbeeldt. Een fantastisch project. Sinds 1942 hangt de helft van de doeken in het MOMA in New York, de rest in de Phillips Collection in Washington. Lawrence maakt inmiddels deel uit van de canon van de Amerikaanse kunstgeschiedenis. Op de grote overzichtstentoonstelling Es war einmal in Amerika in het Keulse Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in 2019 ontbrak zijn werk dan ook niet. Ook in Amersfoort hangen een aantal werken van deze kunstenaar, waaronder Revolt on the Amistad, over de slavenopstand op het Spaanse schip Amistad in 1839.

In 1964 werd de Civil Rights Act aangenomen. Deze maakte echter geen einde aan de rechtsongelijkheid tussen blank en zwart. Als gevolg van de blijvende ongelijkheid ontstonden er bewegingen die hiertegen in opstand kwamen, zoals de Black Panthers en Black Power. Ook kunstenaars gingen zich in hun werk politiek uitlaten. Expliciete beelden en teksten domineerden de kunstwerken. Een voorbeeld is Hommage to a Giant (1970) door Wadsworth Jarrell. In beeld en tekst wordt een eerbetoon gebracht aan Malcolm X, leider van de Afro-Amerikaanse moslimorganisatie Nation of Islam.

In 1994 introduceerde Henry Louis Gates in Time Magazine de term Black Renaissance om aan te geven dat er een sprake was van een opleving van de zwarte cultuur die vergelijkbaar was met de Harlem Renaissance. Een belangrijke kunstenaar uit deze periode is Kerry James Marshall. Zijn doel is het zichtbaar maken van de onzichtbare zwarte man en vrouw. Daarom zijn de personages die hij schildert altijd diep zwart. Dat is ook het geval bij de man en vrouw op Vignette, die donker afsteken tegen een kleurrijke achtergrond met tarwehalmen, vlinders en vogels. De zwarte mensen op Marshalls doeken claimen een eigen plaats, zoals zwarte kunstenaars uit deze generatie een duidelijke eigen plek opeisen binnen de, tot dan toe blanke, kunstinstituties.

In de grote zaal van het museum, waar de tentoonstelling eindigt, wordt de aandacht onmiddellijk getrokken door een kunstwerk dat nauw aansluit bij de recente Black Lives Matter-protesten. From Ferguson to Baltimore van Dáreece Walker is een enorme houtskooltekening. In het midden zien we een zwarte man in een doodskist. Daaromheen gevechten tussen blanke politieagenten en zwarte burgers. Een gigantische politiemacht met helms, schilden en wapens vormt de achtergrond van het werk. De titel verwijst naar rellen in Ferguson (2014) in reactie op het neerschieten van Michael Brown door een blanke agent en in Baltimore (2015) nadat Freddy Gray overleed als gevolg van dodelijk letsel dat hem was toegebracht in een politieauto. Er is weinig fantasie voor nodig om de lijn van Ferguson via Baltimore door te trekken naar Mineapolis en de dood van George Floyd. Alleszins een politiek relevant en overrompelend kunstwerk.

Hoopvoller is, in dezelfde zaal, Darkroom Mirror (_222004) van Paul Mpagi Sepuya. Op deze erotisch geladen foto zien we een zwarte en een blanke man, beiden naakt, door de lens van eenzelfde fototoestel kijken. Na het zien van deze tentoonstelling, en zeker na een tijdje voor het werk van Dárecee Walker te hebben gestaan, lijkt het samenvallen van een blanke en zwarte kijk op geschiedenis en actualiteit nog ver weg. Anderzijds geeft het feit dat er eindelijk (ook in Nederland) aandacht komt voor Afro-Amerikaanse kunst hoop.

Nieuw kunstenaarsinterview: Sadik Kwaish Alfraji

Volgens de Irakees-Nederlandse kunstenaar Sadik Kwaish Alfraji krijgen alle migranten een extra laag in hun ziel, waardoor er een gat ontstaat. Dat probeert hij in zijn kunst te dichten. Ik sprak voor de website van Metropolis M met hem over zijn pogingen daartoe, die nu te zien zijn in Kunsthal KAdE en Museum Flehite (beide in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van elkaar), respectievelijk tijdens In Search of Lost Baghdad en Bagdad-Amersfoort.

Ballard Deze quote is favoriet van @justinbriceguariglia, het omschrijft perfect hoe de kunstenaar zich verhoudt tot de hedendaagse samenleving. Ecologische problemen waarnemen en blootleggen zijn de hoofdzaak van zijn kunstenaarspraktijk. Toen Guariglia op een dag over de snelweg reed en een waarschuwingsbord aan de kant zag staan leek hem dit een geschikte manier om zijn ideeën te communiceren. Hij waarschuwt voor wat ons als mens te wachten staat op de wereld (in plaats van op de weg) ecologische problemen en dat wij hier zelf aan ten grondslag liggen.
