Serif
For serifs, I chose three different typfaces that I hoped would encompass a good selection of a large variety. Kumlien Pro is thinner and more decorative, I felt it would work as a heading, or a smaller section of anchor text. Caslon is readable and looks good as body text, in the right context, and can also look great as a heading. Jenson has a smaller x height, and I liked that it has delicate lines yet is readable. I think all three of these typefaces can be conbined with a complementary sans serif and look great in a layout.
sans serif For sans serifs I wanted typefaces that had large families. For example, Avenir has a lot of options for different weights. It can be used as both the heading, body, and anochor text just by changing the word’s weight. I really like futura, and it is also a large family. I think the typeface offers a lot of personality can worls extremely well for certain projhects. Mr Eaves was my final choice, I needed another, typface that had a smaller x height and the ability to funcation well for readability inlarge bodies of text.
Slab Serif I do not have a lot of experience using slab serifs, so I did a lot of exploring before I chose my typefaces. I wanted fonts that were readable yet strong and could act as anchor text and be paired with either a serif or a decorative font.
Handwriting Handwriting is probably my favourite typeface, but I recognize that there is a time and a place to use it, and that often it can be hard to read, especially for large blocks of copy. I chose a variety, some more flowing, some heavier. The intention for these typefaces would be display and accents, so I wanted to make sure I had some that were more delicate, or “feminine,” and some that were nore versatile.
Decorative and Display Decorative and display faces are fun and something I have not had the change to work with that often. I would use these for personality, drop caps, or special headings. I again wanted a variety that would cover a myriad of styles and design requirements. I was looking for readable yet energetic in my choices, and because these font families often do not have as large a variety of weight selections as serif or sans serif, I looked for a few that had different weights and personality. I’m excited to work with these typefaces more in the future and explore the delicacies of creating a balance of intrigue but not distraction for the reader.
